@CaptainBohemian As far as I know, central charge is an invariant attached to a representation of an algebra (typically the Virasoro algebra in dimension 2). The Virasoro algebra has a one dimensional center, and the center has a tradionally chosen basis element. If this element acts by a scalar multiple of identity, then that scalar is the central charge.
