Note that bad English is usually no reason for any flag; it’s a reason for editing or asking for clarification. The only exception is if you cannot understand what is being asked/answered at all, but then you better vote to close as unclear (for questions).

I fully agree with Emilie here and its one of the two big reasons why I plan to vote for her

@Ryan Humor me! What's the second one? :-)
you're a designer and educator that seems to better share my view on allowing more topics rather than fewer and having a hands-off approach. But I think one of the best takes is in the first question on your questionnaire compared to Welz:

Emilie: I think we should strive to be a welcoming community
Welz: I will start by destroying all of them and then taking measures to ensure that they get deleted quicker
Although I can see picking among two candidates doesn't offer a lot of options, I do feel we offer a wide range of possibilities in a way :-)
I should really go over those questions again, I totally answered in a rush before picking up my daughter
Maybe I'll add comments, I'm not sure it would be great to edit that kind of stuff if it's already been voted on but the bulk of my thinking remains the same
@Ryan We did answer with different areas of the site (that we felt are pressing), We were both talking about different topics. It was a question open to a very wide variety of answers.
@WELZ I'm still waiting on your answer to my question here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/44640646#44640646
@BillyKerr It doesn't matter if you actually want to be moderator. We mainly needed you because Welz can't run unopposed. But we've got another candidate now.
14:25
@WELZ right, and I agree with Emilie's answer more than yours. Sorry. I think ultimately you both would do alright. But am worried you are much more heavy handed than she is and I already feel at times like I'm the last person here trying to keep things open
It's a matter of values, I'm fine with anyone voting for Emilie because they are more aligned with her values, that's how every election works!
The way you wrote it, it made it seem like the question was (particularly) about new users (which it wasn't about anything in particular at all) and how we each answered polar opposites.
@Ryan Didn't that have to do with spam specifically?
deleting as quickly as possible
I think I align with Vincent on many of our issues if not most.
Usually when I wanted to answer something in meta, he'd pretty much already covered what I was thinking
@Emilie Most of my flagged posts have been deleted, it's quite hard to find one. Sorry.
@Emilie And I didn't scare you yet? I should try harder :P
14:28
@LateralTerminal Mine had to do with spam, Emilie's had to do with new users to the community.
@Emilie pretty sure I do too :) I'm sure him and I have disagreed somewhere along the lines but overall not so much
@Vincent Not even close!
@Ryan you were white and gold, right? :P
I would sort of like to have more questions in the education tag here, but as I see it, most of the kind of questions I would ask would probably get closed as opinion-based or too broad or some sort of similar issue.
Which is a huge change from years ago, I was looking at a question Alan gave a great answer to, something along the lines of How does one learn to be creative
@Emilie exactly! if I could double my support I would
14:32
And there was Rafael's question not too long ago about communication theory that was hotly debated... but the community is Graphic Design, not Graphic Arts... which implies some kind of problem solving, namely visual communication problems
I try and try but as the community has grown with more and more programmers it seems our questions have deteriorated into "my adobe be broke" as scott would say because everything else gets closed
You look at other communities like Workplace and Academia, they have no problem answering "opinion-based" questions that I can see
some opinions are better than others :-P
That actually has to do with the scope of the site, some sites, like IPS; every question is opinion based.
Of course it's related to scope. The community defines the scope in a way by closing questions that they deem unfit but the thing is a variety of questions can co-exist, so long as we're not infringing too much on other communities' scope
Our community is currently in an ongoing (loooong) disagreement over what is considered "in our scope"
14:41
@WELZ no we really aren't. Literally every meta question that's been asked about it has ended with the same outcome: Downvote, don't Close Vote if you think the question lacks effort. The issue is people still Close Voting anyways
The dissent exists, regardless of the outcome of our meta posts.
I don't see an issue with having the scope we used to (wider) and most of it is not taking away from existing SE communities. It's a great way to keep up some of our members' interest and for people who don't feel concerned can just skip to the next question
And if we just neglect our current users for favoring new users, that's just as much of a problem. There needs to be a balance and some compromises; nobody is going to get everything they want.
@WELZ I don't see how being welcoming to new users implies being neglecting to our current users, can you elaborate?
@Emilie Not "welcoming"... I'm talking about (subjectively) LQ/opinion based etc. questions and then users are instructed not to close vote.
14:48
@WELZ I'm not sure I'm properly following you then, if you can rephrase the whole thing I might be able to contribute
Ryan: "...every meta question that's been asked about it has ended with the same outcome: Downvote, don't Close Vote if you think the question lacks effort. The issue is people still Close Voting anyways"
My point was, despite this "being the consensus"... a large number of users, don't agree with it as well.
@WELZ Of course, otherwise they wouldn't be close voting. They likely have some other kind of incentive to close vote, which I think would be worth investigating
@Ryan ding ding, lol
@Ryan I think it depends on the level of the question which was why I brought that up in meta. I've been only closing depending on how complicated the answer would take
@Emilie Like what?
@WELZ I was pointing out to Ryan that when he said his "view on allowing more topics rather than fewer" He was quoting you saying "Welz: I will start by destroying all of them and then taking measures to ensure that they get deleted quicker" I was just saying that had to do with spam specifically. It had nothing to do with expanding what we see on topic.
14:54
@LateralTerminal I think that was understood, I think Ryan was more thinking in terms of the tone or attitude, not so much as specific ambitions of doing x and y
@Emilie Understood in context definitely. Understood out of context? Definitely not. I only know because I read all of Welz Q&A. In a public chat it's really important to not twist other peoples words around. Especially for those who don't know the context. That's really uncool.
@WELZ It can be a bunch of things, but for sure that means some people are likely not voicing their opinion on meta
@LateralTerminal Well I hope people who come to participate to this chat have bother to read the two candidates answers to the questions but sure, I agree with you, we could add a link if it can be edited
@Emilie I think we are a little too aggressive on meta to our current users.
And it can feel like one sided bias (sometimes)
Maybe that's why users won't speak up.
@WELZ Can you show an example?
I'm enjoying this conversation but I REALLY need to go grade, I've been neglecting badly. I'll be back to check where this went after lunch
@Emilie Probably not, it's just the vibe that I get (sometimes - not always, but it can feel like that) - maybe it's just me, but I feel there may be others as well.
15:28
@WELZ I think it's because it takes months or even longer for new users to find meta or even understand what meta is.
@Emilie No it's fine Welz already confirmed it only had to do with spam.

1 hour later…
16:38
@LateralTerminal Oh thank goodness. That's me off the hook then LOL;)
17:01
A community ad for meta might be a start if we don't have one. I can do one once I'm done with this semester's grading
17:18
@Emilie That's a good idea. But maybe at the same time we don't want all the new users in meta until they've become accustomed to the site. I'm not sure how I feel honestly.
meta post: should meta be advertised on meta in meta post for ads
@WELZ Yeah XD lets ask the community what they think about a bunch of newcomers flocking to meta :)
17:36
@WELZ Yes I'll write up a post later tonight when I've given it more thought
It might not be so much just "Come visit us on Meta!" then something along the lines of reminding people to double check Meta if they are unsure about closing or making their voice heard if they feel strongly about not allowing "opinion-based" or "broad" questions

3 hours later…
20:28
@Emilie I like that
