Q: Resolution stuck at 1024x768 after setting nomodeset in Ubuntu 18.04

d a i s yMy system stuck at ubuntu logo while booting. To resolve it, I've set nomodeset. But now it occurs a resolution issue. Here are the necessary information: lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] ...

I guess it is necessary to use nomodeset. What graphics chip/card is it? I can see that it is Intel graphics, but which model? For some chips, it helps to install the package xserver-xorg-video-intel
Sometimes it helps with #GRUB_TERMINAL=console ; Uncomment to disable graphical terminal. This may provide help if the GRUB 2 menu is too large or unreadable. It also may help when using the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT feature. See this link

@sudodus xserver-xorg-video-intel command not found and grub2 is not too large, it is readable but let me try once.

Install with sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel

@sudodus xserver-xorg-video-intel already installed

So it does not help in your case. What happens if you remove it? But try #GRUB_TERMINAL=console first.

10:15 AM
@sudodus I've tried with uncommenting GRUB_TERMINAL=console, it didn't work. and one more info. , this issue occurred after installing it not when I choose Try without Installing, i don't need to set nomodeset in that case.

Did you remember to run sudo update-grubafter modifying GRUB_TERMINAL=console ?

yes and when I boot, it was black

So it is another problem. Please tell me about the graphics chip, name and version number (and approximate age). Usually Intel graphics work well with Ubuntu, but now always.

command?

10:31 AM
sudo lshw -C display

output is already there in question.
in which configuration part doesn't show driver i915

11:12 AM
82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller
I don't know anything particular about it. How old is it (approximately)?

11:22 AM
I've updated my question. Two HDD in my system. In one HDD 16.04 installed and in other 18.04 installed. No such issue in 16.04 so it's mainly with new OS distro.

Searching the internet for 'linux 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller' I found this link (with a linux driver from 2006, which is long ago),

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81526/Graphics-Drivers-for-Intel-82945G-Express-Chipset

I guess it is for 32 bit.

I am not at all sure that such an old driver will work in a modern version of linux. So I would hesitate to use it, and yes, it seems to be for 32-bit.
Have you tried UXA acceleration according to this link,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/AdvancedMethods#Old_Intel_graphics

I've just checked there's no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/

So you can create one (with the content at the link).
Sometimes new versions of linux drivers drop compatibility with old hardware. Does your computer's graphics work better with older versions of Ubuntu? Are you using a community flavour, for example Lubuntu? In that case, which version and flavour, and which kernel version?

lsb_release -a
uname -a

11:34 AM
yes, older versions worked
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic

Maybe the following links can help,

How to select version

Old hardware

uname -a
Linux ubuntu18 4.15.0-20-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 24 06:16:15 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Well.. creation of file xorg.conf did not work

I suggest that you go back to an old version, 16.04.1 LTS with the xenial kernel, linux 4.4 kernel series, which is supported until April 2021.

Its already there.. I was looking for trying new

Are you running Wayland or Xorg (can be selected with the cog wheel at the log in screen)?

11:42 AM
There's no cog wheel at the login screen

There is a cog wheel in the log in screen of standard Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (un. Are you running for example Lubuntu?

12:04 PM
No Lubuntu..no other distro and There's no cog wheel as I say.. I don't know but I could not take screenshot to show
Its my time to go . I will try to resolve tomorrow

12:31 PM
No the cog wheel is only in standard Ubuntu. I run Lubuntu too.
I will try to remember to look into this chatroom tomorrow ...
