Question to all candidates - what's your take on answers quality in "hot" questions, does site have a problem here? If needed, refer to respective meta post for more details on that...
@WorldEngineer @Dynamic - what do you think about this? Does it feel like at the pictures in related meta post? :)
Say... how would you handle a flag mentioning that particular question appears to be collecting low-quality answers and suggesting to consider protecting it?

@gnat I've been meaning to respond to you on that but had projects to do. I'll try to get to it today.

@WorldEngineer thanks! this isn't really urgent, feel free to respond when it's convenient to you

@gnat If I were running for a moderator position, I'd tell you I am of tired of seeing you promote that question everywhere, and it's not something that moderators here can do anything about. Moderators are exception handlers, not the voice of the site. How moderator candidates view that issue should have no impact on their moderation ability or judgement :)

@Rachel You don't have to be running for moderator to express an opinion.
FWIW, I think "hot" questions matter for moderation only insofar as moderators have a clear idea of how to handle them. That includes questions promoted within SE as well as questions that become popular on Reddit / HN / etc.

@Shog9 I was actually looking for a MSO post I saw a short time ago about how protecting questions was meant to be something done after the they become a problem, not before. I wanted to link it saying that's the only real link between your opinion of the Hot Question list and your moderation style, but I couldn't find it

A: Why can only moderators protect questions less than 1 day old?

Shog9I'm less unsure than my esteemed colleague: proactively protecting questions is a stupid idea, and you should never do it even if the system does allow you to do it. All "protect" does is prevent answers from folks who've never gained any reputation on the site. It's great for stopping spam and...

@Shog9 Yes, that's the one :)
