@glS appreciate your further comments/ clarifications on the question. minev has a nice talk on it on his web site, listened to it, think its helpful, although much is inaudible questions from audience. at this point think the authors are mostly experimentalists and did not analyze the full theoretical implications of the findings, which is maybe more than can be done in 1 paper... anyway ACM hangs out in this chat room he might have more to say there...
