pff, I'm out

vzn
12:32 AM
another thought about tags: maybe theres some overthinking going on here by multiple parties. the main focus needs to be Q/ A. tags are not really a proxy for scope or content. tags are "discovered" over time by contributors. dont think it makes a lot of sense to try to "anticipate" many of them. as far as proposing new ones, think it would help to point to existing Qs for which they make sense. seems tags are not so much about "what we want to see" but more "what is already there".

yes, i agree @vzn

vzn
@heather thx! hey whats new doing anything more with QC these days?

@vzn still working on my simulator =) it's getting even better, i'm pretty happy.
lots of progress recently (just finished up some major school projects, so big jump in free time)

vzn
@heather cool do you have a git repo somewhere? others in here might find something to relate to...

way out of date git repo, but yes. here, let me update real quick.

vzn
12:37 AM
@heather hey its ok to be out of date just any code at all is more than anything posted so far afaik. ofc esp hope more prjs are announced/ cf'd in chat over time.

yep. one moment, almost finished updating.

vzn
great! ps congrats/ thx on early supporting/ promoting/ successfully launching the site. :)

still needs measurement/probability functions (math that's over my head and i need to learn about), way to import gates (currently working on, that's a command of the language that i don't have and am working on), and then start work on nonideal simulation (including, primarily, something to simulate noise, which should be interesting to learn about)
the system does already handle most of the basics, though, so feel free to run and let me know if there's any glaring problems!
there isn't really any input sanitation, so try not to purposely break it =P

vzn
sounds ambitious, think its already impressive. its already more than most could put together. hope maybe some more interest/ contributors will turn up. think its (early example of...) exactly what strangeworks says theyre interested in, hope they engage with it some :)

oh, i'm not so sure about that. there's a lot out there (like quirk) that's very similar.
at least, to what i've done so far.
the nonideal simulator would be useful, and new, though, i think.

vzn
12:47 AM
@heather think theres a place for "not huge prjs understandable to beginners/ basic principles" etc... think there will be a spectrum of stuff accumulating...
speaking of that do you have something on tensor product? was at a QC meetup few mos ago and the topic came up, think it was hard to follow... btw apparently vazirani (early pioneer) has some good youtube videos, we were watching one... would like to see a directory/ toc somewhere for that (instead of all the random youtube thumbnails) may try to hunt it down sometime...
thinking out loud, maybe theres a question here. will try to hunt down his video.

what about the tensor product?

vzn
1:03 AM
@heather its key to modelling QC gate logic. just asked the question.

ah.

vzn
1:42 AM
@heather which reminds me do you have a little writeup of your code somewhere?

Q: February 20th Ask Me Anything with heather: Question Pool

heatherI'm heather. I've been invited to be a guest for the Physics.SE Ask Me Anything (AMA) taking place in the h-bar on Monday, February 20th, at 10pm UTC (for USA users that's 2:00 Pacific, 3:00 Mountain, 4:00 Central, and 5:00 Eastern). I'm excited to talk about just about anything, from teaching yo...

Q: Representation of real numbers in quantum computers

blalasaadriIn classical binary computers, real numbers are often represented using the IEEE 754 standard. With quantum computers you can of course do this as well - and for measurements this (or a similar standard) will probably be necessary since the result of any measurement is binary. But could real numb...

Q: symmetry of tensor product in QC wrt Vazirani 2-qubit video

vznQC pioneer Vazirani has graciously long provided some nice videos on intro to QC. eg in "2 qubit gates + tensor product" (2014) he introduces the tensor product wrt QC gates. was generally able to follow this video but think there was one subtle point glossed over & would like expert to expand on...

Q: Inviting new users

heatherIn a recent post, Robert Cartaino said if you know anyone who needs to be here helping build this thing, the time to get their support is RIGHT NOW! This immediately made me think of Peter Shor who in fact has a stack exchange account. However, the "email private beta invite" thing doesn't ...

 Tag-watch

[tag:tagging-and-tags] on Quantum Computing
@vzn Tensors are well known as objects which, according to math students, are nice and elegant, but seem awful when physicists explain them. If you have math background, ask a mathematician to explain. But the easiest description is that they generalize matrices: matrices are 2d arrays, tensors 3d or more.
Also, why one earth do physicists like the 'notation' that removes the summation symbol and only uses indices. Wtf.
And so, tensor products generalise the matrix product, but this generalisation is a bit hard to follow, really. IMO, It is easiest to keep things as abstract as possible, as the mathematicians do.
So, to be clear, join the to talk tags, make or implement requests.

1:33 PM
Today, on the classical channel, QC puns that should be illegal: "Shor, Grover it!"

2:32 PM
@vzn an explanation of it? no, not currently. I can add one.

2:51 PM
@Discretelizard "Jozsa what happened last time..."

2 hours later…
4:33 PM
@Blue I am adding that definition.

Anonymous
@DanielBurkhart Sure, no problem

Anonymous
BTW there seems to be something wrong with the view counter. It is stuck at 1 view

@Blue On what? sometimes these things update slowly

Anonymous

Anonymous
@Discretelizard On Meta it works fine though

Anonymous
4:37 PM
I've been noticing this for long now

@Blue Well, there are questions with more views. So probably lag.
Hi @Cowsquack . What's up?

Anonymous
The lag doesn't seem to be natural though.

Anonymous
Probably some mistake on the developer's end

hello

@Blue Nah, I doubt it. Just good old lag propagrating through the endless cdn layers.

Anonymous
4:39 PM
On Physics SE for example the views immediately get updated

@Cowsquack Hi.

I was just reading about the chess variant you posted in PPCG-gaming :P

@Blue Maybe the load-balancers have been set to low for non-beta sites.
@Cowsquack Oh okay. I just played another game irl. I think it is pretty neat

Anonymous
@Discretelizard As I mentioned, on Meta QC SE, the view counter seems to work fine

Anonymous
We can do an experiment to check

4:41 PM
@Blue Yeah, but I really think there's no programmer error. Other questions on main are fine.
Why don't you just sit back and leave the programming errors to the CS guys, okay? ;)

Anonymous
@Discretelizard The point is that it is taking longer than usual to update the view counter on the main site

Anonymous
That's an objective fact, not subjective

@Blue Yes, and the causes could be god knows what.
I mean, don't worry. If the problem persists for, say, 24 hours, then you can worry!

Anonymous
@Discretelizard I've been noticing it since day 1

Anonymous

The view counter

4:43 PM
@Blue Okay, is it just this question?

Anonymous

Does that questions till have 1 view?

Anonymous
@Discretelizard Nope, for all newly asked questions

@Blue Well then, nothing to worry about then! Who cares about some little counter! Probably the reason why it isn't often updated

Anonymous
@Discretelizard No. The point is that it is not getting updated immediately, as it should and does on other sites including this very site's meta.

4:44 PM
I'd say all this is by design

Anonymous
@Discretelizard I care about the nitty-gritty details of software design. ;)

@Blue Maybe it loads proportionally to the number of views.
Doesn't sound strange
Explains this stuff

Anonymous
I'll take it to this site's Meta anyway. This looks like an obvious error to me.

Anyway, ask on meta chat
Not main meta
just chat
@Blue Nah, that's pointless. Your answer will be like 3 seconds in main meta chat

Anonymous
@Discretelizard I'm afraid that you're not the only CS-enthusiast guy here

Anonymous
4:47 PM
@Discretelizard I could, but not sure if I should

Anonymous
I'm trying to follow the proper channels

Anonymous
If I don't receive good response here, I'll then take it to mother Meta

I updated my question

Q: Quantum Bitcoin Subdivision

Daniel BurkhartBackground Recently I was reading the article "Quantum Bitcoin: An Anonymous and Distributed Currency Secured by the No-Cloning Theorem of Quantum Mechanics" which demonstrates how a quantum bitcoin could function. The article's conclusion states that: quantum bitcoins are atomic and there i...

I am excited to see what responses I get! Quantum bitcoins seems like a really cool use of quantum computing.

5:00 PM
@DanielBurkhart Thanks

@Blue I did

Anonymous
5:21 PM
Hmm, I see that way more than 5 minutes is over.

Anonymous
Pretty sure they wouldn't know the internal details of all the new sites that keep popping up.

Anonymous
Anyway, hope for the best.

@Blue Eh, I guess that either nbro distracted them or they are asleep. Really, no need to take this to QC meta. I'm sure noone there knows either (maybe Robert?)

Anonymous
@Discretelizard Obviously I've made the post for the community managers and developers in management of this site to review, not for the normal users. I wouldn't expect normal users to know bug details.

Q: The "Users" all users on a single row

Mr. XcoderFor some reason, the Users page seems to display 5 users per row, and the last one goes "out of bounds": Technical info: Using an early 2015 Macbook running macOS 10.12.2 and Safari 10.0.2. Edit I think it actually attempts to put all the users on the same line, not just 5, because the top 5...

MEEthe required meta tags (bug, discussion, ...) are unreadable on hover: Link to page is https://quantumcomputing.meta.stackexchange.com/tags My system: Windows, Firefox 58.0.2

@Discretelizard Question: What are you achieving by telling @Blue that there's "no need to take this to QC meta"?

Anonymous
There are precedents, so I'm pretty sure the dev team will look into this.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 My question too XD

@Mithrandir24601 Well, eh I don't know. Maybe not bothering people with non-issues? I mean its just a suggestion. Not an order.

5:44 PM
@Discretelizard I am not sure about my question relating to cryptography. I am not sure if its completely theoretical.
This is in reference to your suggested edit.

Anonymous
@DanielBurkhart The paper you cited is a Cryptography/Security paper. So it looks reasonable

Anonymous
I'm not sure why the suggested edit included the "quantum-computing-models" tag though

@Blue I wasn't sure because my question is about a specific part of the article.

@DanielBurkhart Well, eh, crypto-currencies are cryptography
@Blue It seems mostly theory. But perhaps the quantum algorithms covers that. Feel free to remove that one. I do think the crypto tag is good, though.

Anonymous
@Discretelizard Yes, done that

5:50 PM
@Discretelizard right, I see the point now.

Q: Quantum memory assisting classical memory

heatherConsider a classical computer, one making, say, a calculation involving a large amount of data. Would quantum memory allow it to store that information (in the short term) more efficiently, or better handle that quantity of data? My thought would be it isn't possible, due to the advantage of qua...

Q: Improving probability of spontaneous parametric down conversion

heatherAs mentioned in an earlier question of mine, I am interested in using type one spontaneous down conversion (SPDC) in optical quantum computing. However, SPDC is a somewhat low probability occurrence - most of the photons pass straight through the crystals unentangled. What methods, if any, are th...

@vzn did a quick writeup of my code on the qc-sim wiki page.
let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to add =)

@Discretelizard The author of the article mathematically proves the viability of quantum currency. Although, its got quite a few flaws.

@DanielBurkhart Yes, this is what I meant by 'only theory'
I mean, I'm all for nice math proofs, but I also know that a very nice result usually is a modeling error...

6:35 PM
@Discretelizard yeah, also, qubits may get cheaper faster than you think. My dad is in charge of running a company that produces silicone for the semiconductor electronics industry. I hear things that make me optimistic the industry will have a breakthrough sooner rather than later.

Anonymous
@heather Found a more relevant source for answering your question. Undeleted it.

interesting, thanks!

@DanielBurkhart Well, I'm gladly proven wrong
But I'm rather a pessimist in these matters

There the site name should be present

7:13 PM
@Blue Yeah, noticed this one earlier. But the design was rather rushed. I suppose this design element was simply not finished.

Anonymous
@Discretelizard We better inform them, or else they'll forget

This will get fixed sooner or later, when the desgin gets updated

Anonymous
I'll write it up tonight if possible

@Blue Don't think it matters, but do whatever you think is useful

7:15 PM
I've just noticed that there's an answer by a new user... With the same name as one of the IBM guys :)

Anonymous
Wohoo! We have guests coming in

Anonymous
Good job, Strangeworks

Oh and I recall that some starting SE's in the beta had a special room called 'helpdesk or something' that is displayed such that clueless users can go there. Should we create something like that?

Or just hope they end up here?

Let's not create too many chats and confuse people

Anonymous
This main chat is good enough

Anonymous
New users can be guided by people here

Anonymous
Also gets difficult to keep track of so many chats

@Blue Thought so. I mean, there's precedent for a new user chat, but I don't really see the point

besides, the new user thing doesn't make a ton of sense because brand new users don't have enough rep to chat.

Anonymous
7:28 PM
That too ^

Anonymous
We could occasionally give "write" access to new users with low rep, but that would be on a case by case basis

exactly. besides, pretty sure you need mods to do that, and we don't have pro-tem mods yet
post is going to be monday or so, according to robert.

Anonymous
@heather ROs can do that :)

well, do we even have those? i guess whoever created this chat.
so you =P

Anonymous
@heather I didn't create this chat. I automatically got appointed as RO by the system itself

Anonymous
7:31 PM
Guess it is based on activity

oh, huh.

Anonymous
2 days ago, by Feeds
Blue has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)

@Blue You can do that by upvoting their answer twice, you know. If they have a decent first contribution, it works. Also, they can always view the chat.
And most new users seem to answer first
But, well, if we can that doesn't mean that we should

Anonymous
@Discretelizard Agreed

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 1 hour ago, by Shadow Wizard
@Discretelizard naturally, there aren't many people browsing private beta... since views are unique for logged in users, it's totally expected that all questions will have low view count since non logged in users can't visit.
@Blue Here's your answer.
Although I guess 1 is innacurate. Hmm, should clarify that

Anonymous
7:40 PM
@Discretelizard "views are unique for logged in users". Pretty sure more than 1 logged in user had viewed that post by that time.

Q: How should different quantum computing devices be compared?

glSIn the last years, there has been a spur of demonstrations of devices able to perform proof of principle, small-scale, non-fault-tolerant quantum computation (or Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum technologies, how they have been referred to). With this I'm mostly referring to the superconducting ...

I was hesitating while editing this post. Do we want the "experimental-achievements" tag to be there for this question? Also, I'm not sure the question is about architecture: "For questions related to building of quantum computers and discussion of the hardware aspects"

Anonymous
I think the relevant tag there should be "technical-standards"

Anonymous
Also, I think we will eventually need a tag named or just

@Blue "discussion of the hardware aspects" I could believe. is good though :) I'd agree that I also don't want on that question
