Q: Can't boot windows 8 install from usb, thinks it's a hard drive. Now stuck on win8 logo

KalecI have a usb flash drive I used to install windows 8 on this laptop. Now I wanna try it on my pc. In boot order there is no clear USB, there were only 3 options (tried them all) Hard, CD, Removable. I noticed that the boot system saw my usb as a hard drive (I have 2 hards, the third was my usb in...

Are you trying to boot from the USB stick when you get the win8 logo problem? Or have you taken it out and are trying to boot to your normal HDD?
@MarcusChan I am booting from the usb. I get to the logo hoping install to start, nothing.
And whatever the current issue is, the way you generally want to boot to USB if you have issues is by manually selecting the USB stick in the startup options menu (usually accessed by hitting f11, f12, or some similar key when booting the machine up).
You really need to clarify what you're talking about for us to be able to help here. What exactly did you do? What do you mean by "I moved my usb as the first hard"? What "still won't boot"?
I have 3 options in my boot priority: Removable (guessing that's usb) hard and cd. I don't know what to do, I have a boot order of four (these three options in 4 positions if you understand) and I set all 4 to usb, all that happens is that it gives me an error about being unable to boot, if not all 4 on usb then it simply starts windows up
@MarcusChan I had a list of 3 hard drives, 2 were real, 1 was the usb. I moved the USB to the first boot position (upper most) and hoped to boot from "hard". Got stuck on splash screen.
Okay, try what I suggested: stop messing with your boot order in BIOS and try to access the startup options menu and manually select your USB stick.

@MarcusChan I have no idea what you just said
Hi, and thank you a lot!
No problem :)
Okay, I'm still a bit confused as to exactly what you did
one second, I'll try and explain everything
I think I made it to work
okay, I have this laptop, I installed windows 8 from my usb that I am curently trying to use on my PC
at the laptop, I used boot from USB, it worked. For the pc it does not
10:02
I have a boot order for hard drives. There my kingston usb appreared
So you said you modified the boot order of the PC, was that in BIOS?
so I set it to position #1 highest boot order what ever
yes
Ok
And then you booted the PC and it just had the windows logo
when I use my USB as the main boot hard drive, yes. Nothing would happen past that point
Okay
So what I'd suggest, is you set the boot order back to the way it was
10:04
Done
And then put the USB stick in, boot the machine, and keep pressing f12 on the bios load screen
it tells me to press del. Should I still press f12 ?
I've never heard it being del, but that could be it too
Try one at a time
ok f12 not working
Okay, what happened?
10:06
nothing special, just booted windows
Okay, you have windows already on the machine?
by booted windows I mean the already installed one oppened
Yep
What did it say about the del key?
yeah, I installed it without boot, but I want a clean install. Want to reformat hard drives and delete everything
press del to enter bios or settings
I pressed del this time
also press tab for some sort of log but nothing happens
Mmk, what's it got?
10:07
standard bios. Main / Advanced / Power / Boot / Tools / Exit (menu toolbar)
main has system info, legacy diskette and my hard drives and my free sata ports
yes
I have installed a lot of OS's before >.<
But never had boot problems
Hmm
You did get a windows 8 logo on a black screen, right?
I have an option Quick boot Enabled "Allows the system to skip certain thests while booting" should I dissable ?
this time no because my USB is no longer the first boot hard drive
Quick boot shouldn't matter in my experience
I mean the time when you did
10:10
yeah
Hmm, how long did you wait on it?
I made a sandwich ...
Ah, never mind then :P
only thing I didn't try is to move my usb. I have 6 slots. Maybe some just don't wanna boot (not powered) or ... something ?
though I still see it in my "Hard disk drives" -> "Select Hard Disk Boot Device Priority"
I doubt this will help but I have an M2N32-SLI Delux motherboard
Eh, may as well try another USB slot I guess
Googling the mobo seems to find a lot of people witht he same issue
10:18
yeah
I also have no idea how to update bios
I've only bios flashed laptops
think I'm just gonna buy a DVD ... I remember installing trough DVDs up ill now
till *
Yeah, grabbing a pack of dvd-rws and burning the iso is probably easiest
Since it seems like a known mobo issue
Wanted to upgrade for 2 years now. Think this just pushed me over the edge
10:24
I knew this mobo was gonna be trouble but, idk 6 years ago or so ... it was all i could afford :(
that was technically still good.
either way, thank you a bunch!
I didn't do much solving there, not much to thank for :P
But hey, nice talking to you :)
It's not the actual solving, it's the trying to help part. I am very protective of my PCs and having someone to talk to helps a lot :P
And I like having someone to talk to about tech, so thanks :)
btw, you could answer my question with that link, I'll upvote and select it. Gotta give you something in return :P
Aww, thanks :)
10:35
No problem :)
ahhh well I'm off to buy a dvd while I'm downloading the .iso from onthehub. Thank you a lot (again)
and have a nice day !
You too :)
