I was basing my comment on the various responses to self-nomination 4 years ago, along the lines of "you never do anything on the meta site!".

Tell you what. I don't plan to throw my hat in, because I imagine there are people with longer and deeper roots who are quite qualified. But if you find you aren't getting candidates and want to encourage me, drop me a comment.

@FredDouglis Meta activity is mostly an indicator of good moderatorship, as it shows that you care about the site, are aware of its rules and issues, etc. Technically you can have all of these qualities without meta activity, but there is a strong correlation.

Apart from that, wielding the featured tag and the general authority that comes with moderatorship can be relevant tools to guide the community, which can be helpful to address disputes in the community and similar problems. However, on Academia, this is not such a big issue, as the community is quite agreeing on site policy.
