5:00 PM
sean can't write dynamic sql

The critical section seems to be processing notifications
I'm assuming that worker threads aren't an issue?

clocked up to 2400 because of previous issues
(exhaustion)

Manually?

aye
default exhausts every time

5:02 PM
Sounds like the number of threads is too high and the AG should be split into smaller chunks TBH

nick rewrote the kernel one weekend

it's possible the 2017 algorithm is friendlier though

Like less databases

on more servers you mean?

Might just be hitting scheduling issues then

5:03 PM
because we'd need the same number of threads

I mean I have no data to support it, I'm just thinking out loud

dbcc stackdump is stalling for 4+ minutes, so every 5 seconds isn't gonna happen there

yeah must have a decent amount of memory

768gb on these, but only ~80 in use

Don't worry about doing it then

5:05 PM
It was doing a lot of minidumps for us earlier, handy eh?

I'd be interested in one or two of them

not all 350?

lmfao
no thanks

5:05 PM
what's a good way to transfer?

come on Sean, live dangerously

Whatever you prefer, do you all have a secure file transfer?

not on-prem, usually use MS's upload but can G-Drive it

@SeanGallardy compressed 3 of them are only 4MB, FWIW

5:12 PM
Appears with our latest tooling move I can no longer create DTM workspaces
If you wan tot just encrypt it in a zip and send to me that works

That's my gigolo account

lemme see if I can get this dump to complete (14 minutes in) - yanking the other open in WinDBG didn't show the thread issue I don't think...so trying to get a good one

What was the dump reason for the one you opened?

honestly don't know - the AG in windows on one restart was bouncing up and down and dumping every time
hadn't had time to look yet since that was a separate thing
(cluster resource I mean)

5:15 PM
gotcha, no worries :)

2spicy4chat

tru

that's alright, you're all worked up
joe smelled a beer
he's off the chain

ahem

just curious - what's the longest someone has seen dbcc stackdump take on a ~95GB process?

5:25 PM
last time I had a bunch of stack dumps it took around 15 s on a 96 core system

30 mins or so, they had really bad storage

although that was with a stackdump caused by sql server, not DBCC STACKDUMP

I have to run for the day, though

so say 32 logical cores and PCIe SSDs 26+ minutes sounds bad
@SeanGallardy I appreciate the help!

so I guess I have nothing helpful to say

5:26 PM
@NickCraver Yeah I think we need to investigate this, I'd like to look into it more on an unofficial basis and bring it up to the devs in our weekly meeting if I find anything interesting

think starting a case today would be fruitful?

Yes and no
If you do start one, I'd like to work with you on it
I'm betting Curt would be interested as well

k - what's the best way, just ping via email once open and mention in the ticket?

@SeanGallardy funny how you've never said that about my support tickets...

Yeah, that would work. I can pull it and jut work with you over it. If you do and I can grab it in time (I'm off today, I'll be back tomorrow) then I'll do some internal stuff to get things already moving
@JoeObbish I told you I'd always work with you on your tickets

5:28 PM
lies

I <3 you Joe, you know that
@NickCraver This way I can bypass much of the stuff you'd initially get and we can just dig right in
the stackdump time is making me a bit antsy, though, it really shouldn't take that long
Ok sorry to take over the room, I have to run though - Nick, feel free to email me and stuff :)

I'm going to kill the process and get it earlier on with a full windows dump first for insurance, then a minidump attempt
thanks!

what does OOF mean?

out of office is how we describe it
I don't remember what the F is for

I thought that was OOO?

5:33 PM
right, I'm saying that OOO = OOF AFAIK

I see

I've seen other Microsoft folks use it in that context

out of frigs (to give)

I really can't think of what the F means

or fricks

5:36 PM
I thought maybe Overseas Observing France
Maybe Out of Office on Fridays

it's not friday!

every day is Friday at Microsoft

Sean rarely makes sense
He probably uses some weird Texas calendar

it doesn't even stand for anything!
well I guess it does, "Out of Facility"

helpful
what has happened to this room

5:39 PM
we did have a bad day today
we should all reflect on what went wrong and what we could have done differently

he started it

looks like Erik's fault

WAIT WHAT
impossible

5 hours ago, by Erik Darling
@Taryn have you tried disabling parallel redo on secondaries?

i've never been helpful

5:46 PM
that's the first helpful comment

i refuse to believe it
we've been HACKED

transcript doesn't lie
except when Erik changes it

someone sweep the room for cyrillic characters

none found

alright well

@Taryn Hey!
I'm going to have to unfollow Grant Fritchey on Twitter.
Am I anti-community?

BUT WHY

20 tweets today.

this is the best BOL example of all time: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/statements/…

Most of them are weird and / or not very interesting to me.

@JoshDarnell apt description of grant šŸ˜‚
@JoeObbish which one?

6:45 PM
the one I linked

@ErikDarling Haha messed up.
> This example grant permission required to execute ALTER DATABASE SCOPED CONFIGURATION to user Joe.
Joe is famous now.

A: Is there a way to retrieve the logical filename from a backup file?

Max VernonI wrote a blog post at SQLServerScience.com. The post shows how to obtain the details you're after, and is compatible with all versions of SQL Server since 2008+

I should change the link in that answer to tinyurl.com/RollinOn

8:26 PM
I keep checking those two links and I don't see a difference.

Single-sentence-answers are rarely helpful. Perhaps you could expand your answer to make it clearer what you are recommending, and why that will help. Also, please take the tour. — Max Vernon Jan 24 at 19:11
with all my love ;)

@ypercubeįµ€į“¹ what can I say, it has two sentences ;-)
I added the code from my blog post.

9:00 PM
@MaxVernon I was too tired to look for a more appropriate comment. Sorry

@ypercubeįµ€į“¹ no worries, I was just being silly

9:39 PM
@ErikDarling that went from zero to hero in just one hour. The OP accepted the answer now.

hopefully no one un-upvotes you

@MaxVernon Well it was entirely your fault that it didn't start out hero.

@JoshDarnell very true

Q: Azure SQL Server - big query choosing bad execution plan

Francisco GoldensteinI'm using Azure SQL Server v12 and I have big, complex query that runs ok but when I add more joins, it doesn't matter which table I'm joining to, it gets super slow. The important thing to point out is that by adding a simple join it's choosing a different execution for the whole query and I rec...

> I cannot post the query or the execution plan but I want to know if someone faced a similar case. My intuition tells me that SQL Server is choosing a bad execution plan because the query is so big that it times out when it tries to pick one.

@ErikDarling for u
anyone on that VARCHAR(MAX) question or should I take it?

all you
i answered the other one
