13 hours later…
1:50 PM
I'm so over the transaction log

i don't think it's that into you, either

@sp_BlitzErik I give it lots of writes
shouldn't that make it happy?
everyone wants to be useful, right?

Maybe it's lazy and doesn't want to do work?
Have you tried talking sternly to it?

@JoeObbish you watch too much thomas the thank engine

2:08 PM
@SeanGallardy Is there really not an extended event that fires for a tempdb spill in 2016?

are hash_warning and sort_warning insufficient?

ninja assassin

@JoeObbish I think what @Forrest said was in 2014 too?

@Forrest I can never find these damn things
thanks

@JoeObbish I totally agree, XE events are too hard to find.
I found myself the other day using the DMVs and doing wildcard searches
actually doing it right now, too :(

2:24 PM
I was searching for silly things like "tempdb" and "spill"
"Occurs when the sort operation on an executing query does not fit into memory. "
clearly I should have searched for "memory"
it was a very helpful extended event
apparently, internal Microsoft processes spill very often
but not my code
Thanks @SeanGallardy

I know it's annoying, but have you opened a ticket with Microsoft? It's possible that multiple people have experienced this issue. — sp_BlitzErik Sep 14 at 15:48
Erik must be getting kickbacks ;)

Uh oh. Here comes the EULA enforcement.

@Forrest Ha! Do you think I've ever enforced a EULA?

A: Is it still best practice to avoid using the default ports for SQL Server?

Sean Gallardy Historically, it has been recommended not to use the default ports for connections to SQL Server, as part of security best practice. Which was asinine then and still asinine now. Security through arguably obscurity isn't security at all. Is this advice still relevant IMHO it was never ...

+1 for using "asinine"

8:23 PM
hahaha
one of my favorite words

I need to start using uncommon words in answers. "You've managed to place the query optimizer in zugzwang."

@Forrest BLOG ABOUT IT YOU BEAUTIFUL LUNATIC

@Forrest I had to Google that, well done.

Noun: zugzwang (countable and uncountable, plural zugzwangs or zugzwänge)
  1. (chess) A situation in which a player is forced to make a disadvantageous move.
  2. in figurative uses
  3. 2002: Carl Friedrich Graumann and Werner Kallmeyer [eds.], Perspective and Perspectivation in Discourse, page 174
  4. An explanation for this phenomenon may be that speech acts that include instructions (e.g., a command or request) show a higher level of activity than speech acts of assertion; the ethnomethodological analysis of conversation speaks of conversational Zugzwänge:24 a request, a question or a command demands a reaction of the addressee.
  5. zugzwang m (plural zugzwangs)
  6. (chess) zugzwang...
Wowza
That's a 5 dollar word right there

That's a Scrabble gamebreaker.

8:30 PM
going over a double word and triple letter tile - that's a game winner
Note to self, don't play Scrabble with @Forrest

If I drank coffee, that'd be like skipping .25 starbucks drinks for a single day

you don't drink coffee?

allergic?

I don't do any caffeine

No pre-workout, nothing
@Forrest Not as far as I know, but it affects my stomach
@sp_BlitzErik After you detox it isn't bad. Sometimes I just heat up water and drink it hot because I miss the warm part of the drink...
I have had no caffeine for about 4 years now

8:49 PM
@SeanGallardy fyi
Microsoft does show you how to query the processes related to always on but I agree this should be left alone. — clifton_h Oct 12 at 12:56

9:21 PM
Sean also doesn't own a television

9:35 PM
it sounds like you're accusing sean of being unamerican

9:46 PM
@sp_BlitzErik Which was odd because there are background processes but not all can you enumerate
@sp_BlitzErik 3!!!!!
@JoeObbish I own a TV, just not plugged in

i'll wait a bit on any others
don't wanna get accused of impropriety

10:14 PM

> NonParallelPlanReason="NoParallelFastForwardCursor"
is that a change?
i thought i recalled it always giving the generic could not generate valid parallel plan warning before

@sp_BlitzErik people who use cursors don't deserve parallel plans

i'm surprised you don't use them for your cci loops

10:32 PM
