It would be really nice to get more people here in chat.
We had a really nice conversation with StoneyB and some other people a week or so ago. Chat can be fun when there are a few of us here at the same time!
How can we encourage more people to participate in chat? Anyone with 20 reputation can participate. See the chat FAQ for more information about it. This particular chat room is for general discussion related to ELL.

When somebody is nervous, or easily irritable, in Italian you would say avere la luna di traverso which Google Translate translates with "have the moon across." (It seems Google Translate gives the literal translation, rather than an equivalent expression.)

@Mistu4u They did say--they said "When somebody is nervous, or easily irritable" the phrase is used to describe them. I asked in comments if they meant the person was irritable all the time, or just at one specific point. They said just at one time, and so I based my answer on that. I think that should probably be edited into the question to be clear, since it's buried in comments now though!!
@Mistu4u Yes, I could do so. If I get a response from the OP that I'm right in what I understand from there question, then I will edit the question for clarity. Until I'm sure I don't want to change their meaning! I agree the question could have been worded better, but I think it was interesting.
I've been noticing a pattern that questions seem to get upvoted more than answers. It's interesting. Maybe because a lot of upvotes on questions are added before any answers are written?
It has been seen people like to upvote answers rather than questions. But if we allow askers to gain a good amount of rep then they would be enthusiased to ask more.
Hmm. I think there have been some pretty good questions. But I agree we don't have much traffic right now. It's at about 370 users a day I think the Area51 stats said
And I know we're not supposed to obsess over those stats, but the thing is.....
If there's more traffic, then ALL the other stats are gonna go up. We're going to have more quality questions and answers, etc. More learners and more teachers
I teach a module that includes technical writing. More than 50% of the students are non-native English speakers. I'd like to provide some pointers to online resources that may be useful to students like this.
I welcome your suggestions and the reasons why you recommend them.
What websites are there where people can practice writing English, and have what they've written corrected by native speakers?
(It'll be useful to point people to this question if they've asked a "question" that's purely "please proofread this text")
@Cerberus Agreed. It's got 4 close votes and I'd like to at least find the other question that's similar to close as a duplicate instead of not constructive so they can have some answers at least.
@Mistu4u Agreed--that's actually a quite good and specific question.
@Mistu4u Yes, generally I would hope it's not necessary!! And yeah, that makes sense. Hmm. I'm just wondering because in addition to what I've seen, I've seen comments that a certain user is making multiple accounts as well to get around bans. So I wonder what they can do about that, since suspension wouldn't really help.
Not so long a go a user here on Meta Stack Overflow asked how he could prevent getting downvoted. To make a long story short, it turns out he had multiple accounts to evade multiple bans. He finished off the discussion with the admission that he just had to go on creating new accounts a...
@Mistu4u Thanks, I'll check out the link! And LOL, because I don't have one!! I don't even have one on my LinkedIn page. I've been telling myself for ages I need to just take a picture and put it up, but I haven't. I don't like pictures so I keep finding reasons to put it off ;)
