A: Why is it "to start laughing" and not "to start to laugh"?

Damkerng T.To answer Why is it "to start laughing" and not "to start to laugh"?, I will point out that both alternatives are equally possible, but there are some minor points we should be aware of, by quoting a sub-entry from Practical English Usage by Michael Swan. (Its main entry is about some verbs and a...

A: Where does "Can't see the wood for the trees" come from?

Alex SnepvangersThe origin is actually from a place called Bath, in England. It refers to a concourse of houses that were designed by the architect John Wood. There was a tree planted directly in front of these houses, and it grew quite large. So people began to exclaim: "You can't see the Wood for the tree!" P...

Hi guys
how is every body?
Hullo!
Thanks.
I have a question.
what is the difference between 'premise' and 'hypothesis' and 'supposition'?
and when to use each of them?
@Mohammad Premise is the background knowledge behind something.
@MARamezani could you give me an example
@DamkerngT. we need your help.
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because the premise of the question is incorrect. — ron Apr 23 at 22:38
14:03
I think the main difference between the two is that we assume that our premises are true.
@Mohammad Did you look up dictionaries?
yes but in arabic they give you the same meaning
@Mohammad Hmm, which word?
so that I got confused
(I know some Arabic)
14:04
'premise' and 'hypothesis' and 'supposition' give you the meaning "يفترض أو إفتراض"
But then background means the same.
In some contexts.
I do not know
14:23
@Mohammad Are you studying philosophy/logic?
@DamkerngT. Hi there, Where did you get he screenshot of H&P from?
14:42
@Araucaria From Google Books.
Good afternoon!

@Choko I copy and paste a zero-width space from Wikipedia

See, it says "WordWord" and so on, and between each of those is a zero-width space, so if you delete the "Word" parts, you get

        ← That's also how you can make messages with space at the beginning :-)

That's it.
@arrowfar Hullo!

@arrowfar Hello!
user116848
Hey guys :-)
user116848
I missed you all. No kidding :-)
user116848
Okay, a bit of kidding. laughs
Anonymous
@MARamezani Yup! But you have to paste in the actual symbol, not the HTML character entity
@snailboat I know I know.
Anonymous
19:37
Zero-width spaces are all kinds of monkey wrench in this place.
Anonymous
Use them with care.

@StoneyB Hello!

@arrowfar Just so you know, telling people you didn't miss them is kind of hostile. You should try to avoid that kind of hostility
Anonymous
After what happened before, I think we need to avoid that kind of conflict
user116848
@snailboat No I was joking. I really did miss you, honestly.
Anonymous
Well, I'm around :-) Sometimes I have to take breaks
Anonymous
I try to join both ELL rooms when I'm here, though sometimes I forget
Anonymous
I checked the star for "favorite room" on each one so I could rejoin them both each time
Anonymous
20:03
This room hasn't been as active, though
user116848
@snailboat Same here. Between breaks :-)
user116848
@snailboat Yeah I feel bad too.
Anonymous
At the moment this is still s'posed to be the general room for ELL, though

Where anyone can ask for help
Anonymous
So I try to at least read the transcript so I can respond if people ask stuff
Anonymous

(I haven't been answering questions on ELL proper lately, but I like to imagine I'm being helpful sometimes on chat :-)
user116848
Yes, I see you work pretty hard with learners here. I am glad we have you here.
Anonymous
I try, though I only know so much, so sometimes my off-the-cuff answers overstep the bounds of my knowledge a bit... Sometimes I have to do research to answer properly :-)
Anonymous
Learners sometimes ask pretty tough questions.
user116848
True. I agree.
user116848
I gave some answers on ELU the other day.

Oh yeah?
user116848
Yeah it was one of those one word request :-)

The word quieten is new to me!

I don't know that kiss the rod phrase Robusto posted, either
user116848

Anonymous

I posted an answer recently too
Anonymous
It didn't get many votes either :-)
user116848
