A: Roads vs The roads, At these times vs In these times

user31691) roads as used here is a mass noun (roads in general cause some problem). So no article is used. 2) When you say: at these times it is referring to specific time based occasions. So you would use at. Same as: Sometimes the train is late. At these times... At the end of the class......

> roads as used here is a mass noun
So roads is a mass noun. :-o

A: A place, some place, some places

MihirUjYes, it's perfectly correct ! Using a place means you are telling about a place you know. Using some place means you are telling about a place you might not know.

Somewhat misleading. perhaps? Hmm... "Using a place means you are telling about a place you know." That makes me think.

So I wanted to use capital "a" in my name, like Arrowfar but the time had already expired when I noticed it. Next change date is 26 March for me. Nooo!
:)
The usernames are case-insensitive, I think.
user116848
No, capital a is shown as A in the avatar. I am sure.

It is fine. At least I have 0% grumpiness in my new pic.

Hi, @MARamezani!
Oh, @KinzleB is here, too!
@DamkerngT. I don't think I deal with living saucers everyday at school. :)
@DamkerngT. I don't count things I pronounce.
Me neither. That question made me curious.

@DamkerngT. Yep, I haven't been here for a while. :) You are much more dedicated than me!
@KinzleB I'm not always here myself, either. But I'm here often enough. :-)
Hope things are going well on your side.

A: What is "sustained investment"?

Ben KovitzSustained is being used in its sense of "prolonged" or "maintained for a long time without a break". "Sustain" comes from Latin teneō, meaning "I hold", plus a prefix meaning "from below"—in other words, to hold something up. In English, the word still conveys a feeling of expending effort or ene...

FWIW, I don't care about etymology, and I think I can understand the sentence just fine.

Language Learning

Proposed Q&A site for students, teachers, polyglots, and anyone involved in the process of learning or teaching a new spoken or written language.

Currently in definition.

What do you think?
I guess etymology in my head (if that exists!) is in reverse. Knowing enough words will make me (or anyone, I believe) group similar words together automatically sooner or later.
I remember that ELL is for teachers, too.
Even user3169 joined us there.
And we already have Linguistics.SE
13:19
The thing's different.
In search of how we learn a language?
That could be fun!
Yeah, for example, "I wanna learn vocab using flashcards. Is there any evidence it's beneficial?".
Polyglot usually implies that they learn second languages later in life, but I don't think that's absolutely necessary.
I didn't edit the proposal!
@MARamezani My opinion: Flashcards are good for short-term learning.
Scratch that. They're great!
13:21
Whatever. I've never used them.
I used it a bit when I wanted to memorize Hiragana characters.
Too bad that people who use Flashcards (myself included) tend to not refresh what they learn later in life, so what they've learned will fade sooner or later.
Probably sooner. People usually turn to flashcards when they want to cram something.
But because there are 108 (or more) ways to skin the cat, I'd say whatever way learners use works, as long as they are engaged and being persistent.
It's just that some methods work better for some people.

user37421What should I say and which of these sentences is true? Q: Is it necessary to add "do it" in the following case?

alexchenco My headache was so bad by then I could barely go to class. And when I managed to do it, I couldn't listen to the professor at all. Can I just write, "And when I managed to, I couldn't..."?

Hi @Man_From_India.
what do you think? I think it's okay to drop "do it" here.
@MARamezani Hello...
Let me add more salt:
13:54
I'd use "do so", but I don't think omitting is problematic. Still, that's a thought. I'm waiting for answers, just like you. — MARamezani 1 min ago
yea I already saw your comment. I agree with you. I have no problem with "do it" or "do that" or "do so", but I would have preferred "do that".
But that is more of a writers' choice
@Man_From_India Nah, "do so" is fancier. :)
@MARamezani I see...I had no idea :-(
14:09
MFI, you get sad too soon!
Only here...in other matters I am hard to make sad ;-)
So, that your exam is over, what are you up to these days?
My exam is over, my love and enthusiasm for chemistry isn't!
Wow, that was a "Pythagoras" answer!
ahh that's great!!!
So I can say you are on your way to become an Alchemist ;-)
Haha, it would be my honor to set foot in the path of Avicenna.
I don't know much about Avicenna. Who is he?

@DamkerngT. My opinion: flash cards are terrible for learning.

They're useful to help retain information you've already learned properly

Or to help solidify knowledge you've learned but don't have firmly seated in your long-term memory

I think flash cards are sometimes misused

@CopperKettle Well that seems funny!
I would also put Wikipedia under control, but it's a useful site..
.. but I get distracted with pages like these
The Kalinin K-7 (Russian: Калинин К-7; Ukrainian: Калінін К-7) was a heavy experimental aircraft designed and tested in the Soviet Union in the early 1930s. It was of unusual configuration with twin booms and large underwing pods housing fixed landing gear and machine gun turrets. In the passenger version, seats were arranged inside the 2.3-meter thick (7 ft 7 in) wings. The airframe was welded from KhMA chrome-molybdenum steel. The original design called for six engines in the wing leading edge but when the projected loaded weight was exceeded, two more engines were added to the trailing edges...
God only knows how I got to read this page. I started with some pages about post-Soviet Central Asia, and wound up there. (0:
user116848
@CopperKettle Btw what's a spaced learning program?
@arrowfar It's a very interesting stuff, seems to be corroborated scientifically

The usual name is "spaced repetition"
Anki is a spaced repetition flashcard program, similar to SuperMemo, a commercial product for the same purpose. Anki (暗記) is the Japanese word for memorization. The SM2 algorithm, created for SuperMemo in the late 1980s, forms the basis of the spaced repetition methods employed in the program. Anki's implementation of the algorithm has been modified to allow priorities on cards and to show cards in order of their urgency. The cards are presented using HTML and may include text, images, sounds, videos, and LaTeX equations. The decks of cards, along with the user's statistics, are stored in the open...
@snailboat Indeed! thanks! And good evening!
Anonymous
Useful stuff, though I think people overstate how scientific it is
Yes, that is likely.
Anonymous
There is definitely research into spaced repetition, overlearning, and so forth
I read some interesting articles a while back. On how you must create "useful distortions" to learning or something like that. As a result of this, you learn slower, but the knowledge stays in your head.
