> But we cannot automatically treat the separate grammatical units of other languages as separate grammatical units of English; if we did, we would not be able to study English morphology without first studying the morphology of five or six other languages, and we would be forced into ridiculous analyses such as that the English word 'parallelepiped' was composed of four or five grammatical units (which is the case in Ancient Greek). We must accept, then, that the distinction between "simple" and "complex" words is difficult to draw, and is therefore not always useful.

That's a neat quote

(I looked up prefix in the index!)
Usually, the words that are complex in most people's idea are quite easy in my opinion, apart from the fact that they're usually long.

> Affixes will have one of three possible effects on word stress: i) The affix itself receives the primary stress (e.g. 'semi-' + 'circle' ˈsɜːkl̩ → 'semicircle' ˈsemɪsɜːkl̩; '-ality' + 'person' ˈpɜːsn̩ → 'personality' pɜːsn̩ˈælɪti).

Do those syllablic diacritics render in the right spots? (under l and n)

> ii) The word is stressed just as if the affix was not there [...] iii) The stress remains on the stem, not the affix, but is shifted to a different syllable [...]
Sort of. They're a little off to the right.

Did you sing to me that night ? Please sing me a song ? I was wonder...

@DamkerngT. I was too lazy to type the examples for ii) and iii). I'm not very fast at using IPA keyboard stuff.
Anonymous
But I typed up the example for i) because it had an example of a prefix bearing an accent
You're way savvier than me on IPA thingies! :-)

I have shortcuts set up for the common ones in Japanese.

But English has lots of them I can't type without going to the IPA web keyboard thingy.

Another challenge for me is in learning to recognize words I learned by reading rather than listening

When I first heard 消し去る (けしさる) spoken, it sounds like "kessaru" to me

And I couldn't figure out what word it was! :-)

Four pages of Martin is a lot of text. That book is dense.

I like that rule #3 out of 9 is "The following words are simply exceptions and must be memorized as such", followed by a list of 100 words

Oh, my poor brain.
