SE thrives because it has good enough answers to people who need good enough answers to their questions
Anonymous
It's not full of gems, but for most purposes it probably doesn't need to be
I found a lot of gems here.
Frankly, I learned a lot from here.
Anonymous
Oh, sure.
Anonymous
When I said full I meant it literally.
Anonymous
It's not 100% gems.
Anonymous
23:01
But there are thousands of answers here now, so whatever the gem-to-not ratio is, I'm sure you can find plenty :-)
Anonymous
We have a lot of good answerers.
That's very important.
I think it's the reason that Q&A websites work.
Anonymous
ELL is working fairly well.
Anonymous
I don't know how it relates to ELU.
Anonymous
I will probably never quite know that. :-)
Anonymous
23:04
But that's okay by me.
I might need to sell my idea to some folks first, so I don't have to worry about its expenses. :-)
@snailplane I'm sure ELU is doing great too!
Anonymous
Oh, ELU is buzzing along.
Anonymous
I contributed there a little bit.
Anonymous
I have a long-term goal of reaching 3000 reputation there.
I'm just worried a little lately, about the quality of our answers here.
@snailplane That would be my indefinitely-long-term there. :-)
But I sneaked in there (ELU) quite often.

@DamkerngT. It's not too hard. You can get a bunch of reputation for a silly answer here or there more easily
Anonymous
I have 2719 reputation there from 47 answers and 2 questions.
I know. I got many from my silly answers too. :-)
Anonymous
The scores on my answers are mostly unrelated to how good they are.
Anonymous
ELU is too close-happy for me.
I'm not sure about the meaning of "close-happy".
Anonymous
23:08
Happy to close.
Anonymous
(Questions.)
Oh, I see. :D
Enjoying the act of closing, i.e. inclined to close questions.
Hi!
Anonymous
Hello!
23:09
@snailplane I agree.
My home site though it be.
Hah! They have an entry for -happy (not just happy).
Anonymous
Yeah, the definition for -happy was better than the gloss I gave ("happy to X").
Anonymous
Cerberus's definition was good, too.
23:11
Still there are many questions there deserved to be closed but didn't get closed.
Anonymous
Oh, I suppose that might be the case--there are an awful lot of questions there I've never read
I would say luck got involved.
Anonymous
I don't know. I can't predict when a question will be closed or not on ELU.
Anonymous
I suppose it's probably more predictable to a regular
If I could predict it, I would be super-rich. (I would apply the same formula to stock markets.)
Anonymous
23:15
Language is so confusing.
So as stock markets. :D
Today I found that BBC Radio 4 has a section for Classic Literature where they'd dramatize classic novels (like Sense and Sensibility) and I can listen to many of them for free!
Anonymous
Yes, so they are.
In my humble opinion, some people on EL&U spend too much time and energy on administrative affairs. Sometimes the emotions build up...
Anonymous
Oh! Hooray!
But I'd prefer something similar from the US.
Anonymous
23:16
Oh, because you're training your American English accent?
But BBC Radio 4 is not too bad. Actually it's rather good.
@snailplane Yes. But I don't think my accent is totally American. It's a mix.
@Cerberus nods
Anonymous
Somehow I think a dramatization of Sense and Sensibility with American accents might seem weird
Oh don't worry, I think they dramatized some American literature too. :-)
I didn't look into it too much, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could find Tom Sawyer there.
@DamkerngT. Why an American accent?
Oh, my Firefox just crashed again! :D
@Cerberus It's because it's the main accent in movies I watch.
And growing up with IT, I'm more familiar with American accents.
23:22
But RP is more sonorous, and more prestigious, too...
RP is fine too.
But accents in some English TV programs can be so difficult to understand.
The BC will surely read those novels in RP or something close to it?
(Something similar to cajun's accent, and yet I could understand cajun rather well.)
Yes, regional or lower-class accents are always harder if you're used to the standard accent...
@DamkerngT. That's odd!
@Cerberus When they dramatized novels, the accents seem to vary, but not stray too far from RP I would say.
23:24
Yeah.
It's called "BBC English" for a reason.
Anonymous
23:56
@DamkerngT. You could turn your "more often" comment into a short answer.
Anonymous
Not much more need be said.
Then it would be very, very short. :-)
But I will do as you suggested. :D
Anonymous
Well, it's up to you.
Anonymous
You do risk it being turned into a comment. :-)
