Hey everyone, it's time for the Site Self-Evaluation!
06:59
@snailboat I'm not sure about the process. There seems to be 10 questions. But if they are the same to every reviewer? Can I click "skip" to review other questions and come back to the skipped question later?
(Or if I click on the "Skip" button, I will have a good chance not being able to find it anymore?)
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. They're the same for every reviewer. Don't skip if you intend to review that question.
Anonymous
You cannot go back and review one you've skipped.
Anonymous
They're questions selected at random from the last three months. Site self-evaluations happen four times a year.
@snailboat Thank you.
Anonymous
In the current version of the process, a meta thread is automatically posted on each site for discussion of the site and the ten automatically selected questions

Once the review has finished, a day or two later everyone's results will be tabulated and posted as an answer
11:21
@DamkerngT. Weew-Waaw is down as I'm changing the hosting service. Sorry for misleading link in my profile; every day I'm thinking that today I will certainly get it re-opened, but still postponing it. :)
@bytebuster Oh! Hello
I hope that your site will get back to normal operation soon. :)
Do you live here (in Thailand)?
@DamkerngT. I hope so. In fact, I'm not a promoter, I wrote it rather for my own pleasure. Someone told me that Thai script is impossible to formalize unless you are using some word corpus. I have proven that it is possible with 90%+ accuracy.
Ah, you're working on NLP projects then.
I believe that the most difficult part to analyze Thai text is particles.
And everything in Thai are usually in sub-text, I mean we don't have tenses as in English, but we suggest the tense all the time.
@DamkerngT. Some tiny aspects, like consonant resuplication like in ราช are of course done with a small built-in dictionary.
Also we give out the hints about the gender, the social status, and so on, at all time.
11:31
@DamkerngT. I'm not analyzing the meaning, at all. My goal is to take a written text and produce a phonetic representation, e.g. IPA. So I'm mostly working with individual syllables...
Do you mean we can say the word as either ราด or ราชะ?
Oh, yes. I understand you now. Thanks.
@DamkerngT. Exactly.
I believe you must have came across phrases like โคลงเรือ or ตากลม. :)
--Without context, even native Thai speakers wouldn't know how to choose the pronunciation. :-)
Oh and yes, I'm living in Thailand.
ตากลม is well-known puzzle, impossible to solve. :-) Luckily, the program produces a weighted list of possible readings and it also is able to explain why exactly, e.g for อักษรนำ. :)
@bytebuster You mentioned อีสาน accent, perhaps you are not in Bangkok, but possibly in อีสาน, I guess?
I'm sorry for having to excuse myself for a while.
(Must take care of some personal matters.)
I hope we can chat together later.
BBL
11:40
@DamkerngT. I'm living in Bangkok, Pattaya, or Chonburi and yes, I have many friends from Isaan. I'm enjoying phonetics, so it's really interesting to listen for the phonetic subtleties how different people speak.
@DamkerngT. It was a pleasure to talk to you. See you soon.

7 hours later…
19:04
@DamkerngT. Hi
@IceGirl Hello. How was it going?
Oh, you've got a new photo!
@DamkerngT. good. yes. is it nice?
Yes, it is. Quite beautiful. :)
thanks
Do you like skating?
19:07
yes
Ah, so that's the reason for the name IceGirl. :)
sure
Did you do well in your test?
so so it's barely hard
You mean "very hard", I guess?
("barely hard" means "not very hard")
19:10
my test contains with 31 words. I didn't answer six of them. I was really confuesd
25 out of 31 is not bad. :)
but i think it's bad
Well, you can prepare yourself better next time.
Damkerng T. can you help me about my writing?
sure
What do you mean?
(writing)
19:13
I need a good introductory for my essay about hyper-parenting
writing essay or something like this
I'm not sure I can be your good teacher on writing.
(I'm a non-native English speaker, remember?)
yes
ok
I'm sure that I still make many mistakes in my writing. :)
most of my mistakes are grammatically
do you know what should i do?
I can reduce some of your grammar mistakes, but not all.
19:16
can i ask?
@IceGirl In long term, or short term?
no just 2 or 3
@IceGirl You can try asking, and see if I can help, okay?
okay
(Writing essay usually requires a careful proofreading.)
Be back in 5 (minutes).
19:18
ok
children need to be with parents with no goal in mind beyond the pleasure of spending time together because they all do better when they relaxed. (when they relaxed) is correct?
@IceGirl when they are relaxed is better
some children said: our mother didn't let me being myself, always criticized me, controlling everything.
(When you submit your essay, I wonder if you capitalize the first letter of each sentence?)
let me be not let me being
controlled everything not controlling everything
(I worry about your capitalization because it will be the first thing your teacher notice.)
YES. exactly you're right. I did it a lot in every essay.
specially(S)
shame on me
Don't worry. We are learning.
It's normal to make mistakes.
Just learn from it. :)
19:29
okay
I've got several good lessons from around here too. :)
These parents are the most harmful,they are capable of everything only to feel them self important.
only to make themselves feel important
(By the way, always type one space after a comma.)
okay
(In chat room, it's not a big deal. But writing an essay, we have to be careful.)
19:35
They are being involved to help their child be successful.
their children to be successful
But as we know that high level of involvement is stressful for parents and it is not benefiting the kids.
But, as we know, that high level of involvement is stressful for parents and it does not benefit their kids.
The belief that hyper-parenting does more harm than good is supported. can you change this sentence instead of that?
(I probably change that that high to a high.)
@IceGirl This sentence is good, actually.
But it sounds like you are going to say supported by something.
(For example, some researches.)
19:43
you mean i write it: is supported by some researches?
No. I mean that normally, when you say something is supported...
you will have to provide the evidence (to support it).
Otherwise, your writing will be weak (because there is nothing to support it).
please write my sentence in correct way
It's actually correct, as I said.
(It can be better, if you are going write about the evidences to support that in the next few sentences.)
19:48
please wait until i write my whole paragraph for you. sorry
Okay. :)
Hyper-parenting is a style of child rearing that has evolved from the belief that parents have the power and the obligation to create a perfect life for their child and in turn, the child will be guaranteed to be successful in adulthood.The belief that hyper-parenting does more harm than good is supported.They are being involved to help their child to be successful.But, as we know, that high level of involvement is stressful for parents and it does not benefit their kids.
It's actually harming them.
These parents are the most harmful, they are capable of everything only to make themselves feel important.
That's not bad, really. Not bad at all.
really?
(By the way, add one space after each period (or full-stop) before the beginning of the next sentence.)
@IceGirl Yes.
There is a little room for improvement though.
In the first few sentences, you use the word child...
19:59
okay
then later, you use the word kids instead...
is it wrong?
which agrees with the use of them in harming them.
I won't say that it is plain wrong.
But I think it is safer to keep them consistent.
sorry i can't understand. now what should i do?
(When you think about child or kids, how many kid or kids you are thinking about?)
Just one of them?
Or lots of them?
20:02
no lots of them
(There is no right or wrong answer. It's just a matter of choice.)
Okay, you pictured lots of children, correct?
ok
yes
Okay then I recommend you to change child to children
and maybe kids to children too.
all of the child change to children?
And, reading it once again, I think It actually harms them. is better than It's actually harming them.
@IceGirl Yes
20:06
okay
sorry, can i continue or not?
I saw college-age children about their parents, asking a barrage of question. Forexample: Are your parents involved in selecting classes? Do they contact your professors about your grades? Do they intervene if you have a roommate issue? then the students feelings of depression and anxiety.
What do you want to mean when you say about their parents?
Are you still there?
parents who intervene the child's life
yes
is it wrong?
I don't understand this sentence: I saw college-age children about their parents
20:17
okay, can you say another sentence instead of that?
(It means: I saw them around their parents.)
I don't know what you are trying to say.
Is it "I saw children being asked about their parents"?
in this paragraph i want to say about parents who intervene in child's life a lot
yes
I know. But what did you want to say in that sentence?
2 mins ago, by Damkerng T.
Is it "I saw children being asked about their parents"?
i don't know how to say it for you
yes
yeah
yes
Okay then....
20:22
now right or not?
I saw college-aged children asked a barrage of question about their parents,
okay
Not quite right, wait...
I saw college-aged children being asked a barrage of question about their parents,
Im not used to that word barrage (to be used like this)
Okay, I got it...
good
I saw college-aged children being asked a barrage of questions about their parents.
For example: Are your parents involved in selecting classes?
Do they contact your professors about your grades?
Do they intervene if you have a roommate issue?
20:27
I think they are right
Then the students would feel depressed and anxiety.
(I'm not quite sure about the last one.)
(I think it's okay.)
I think I can help you only this much tonight...
I want to go to bed a little earlier today...
Is that okay with you?
We also live in an era when it's very difficult for a family to live on just one salary. Both parents feel compelled to work and both feel guilty at the lack of time spent with their children mentally and physically stimulated at all times.
so so
actually it's not okay
@IceGirl This is the last one for tonight, okay?
20:34
okay sure
don't worry
We also live in an era when it's very difficult for a family to live on just one salary.
(I'm not 100% sure with this one...
but I would change live on to live with...
even though I can't say that live on is wrong.)
continue my paragraph:But children need time and space to develop their independence and exercise their imaginations, to play with friends, perhaps even to discover the pleasure of reading, writing and drawing for themselves.
Finish
Both parents feel compelled to work and both feel guilty due to the lack of time to spend with their children, and being mentally and physically stimulated at all times.
you wrote it like me not change ok?
20:39
nothing
nevermind
But children need time and space to develop their independence, to exercise their imaginations, to play with their friends, and perhaps even to discover the pleasure of reading, writing, and drawing for themselves.
Only six line left can i ask? Please Please
Just paste them all. I'll see how much I can help, okay?
okay
The real danger of hyper-parenting is that it is intrusive and parents don't let their children make their own decision, take risks and learn for themselves. When adult children don't get to practice problem-solving skills, they can't solve these problems in the future.
decisions not decision
learn by themselves
20:48
I think parents must be allowed to children from mistakes and learn for themselves and parents to give their children more freedom. The children need more opportunities in their lives.
Finish.
(What do you mean: "adult children"?)
parents
(It makes more sense if you delete that adult from adult children.)
I believe that is better than I think, especially in formal writing.
you mean i write that adult?
@IceGirl delete that "adult"
20:52
aha ok
sorry
I believe that parents must allow their children to make mistakes and to learn by themselves, and to give their children more freedom.
The bottom line is: the children need more opportunities in their own lives.
(Try putting that "the bottom line is" into your essay, and it will sound stronger. :-)
Thank you so much. Goodnight.
Anonymous
@IceGirl Good night!
One note: The word the children after that colon...
some will say that you should write The, some will say the is good.
@snailboat I said good night to DamkerngT.
ok

20:58
@IceGirl Oh, I thought you were going to sleep
Please consult your teacher which format is preferred at your school, okay?
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Good night, then!
Anonymous
Whichever one of you is going to sleep. Hopefully one of you. Otherwise I'm lost. :-)
@snailboat Hello
Anonymous
Hello!
20:58
@DamkerngT. okay
Anonymous
I am not going to sleep, personally. It's 13:00 here in California.
I told IceGirl that that's enough for me tonight. :)
@IceGirl Good night, IceGirl.
@DamkerngT. really? i don't believe it
Anonymous
@IceGirl Kid is less formal than child
@IceGirl Oh yes.
Anonymous
21:00
Neither is wrong, but it's usually a good idea to stick to (roughly) the same formality level
Thinking actively is much more exhausting than thinking passively.
And actually, I really want to go to bed before 5 tonight.
@snailboat I just posted an answer at our Linguistics site.

A: Is Thai a stress- or syllable-timed language, and does it matter?

Damkerng T.I cannot answer this as a linguist. However, being a native Thai speaker, and being someone who educated himself about linguistic much enough to have some idea on stress-timed vs. syllable-timed (acoustic phonetics is one of my particular interests), I believe that I can provide some good informa...

I just gave them my opinion.
and I don't know, but you might be interested in reading it. :)
If so, please feel free to correct my post there.
@DamkerngT. Do you want to know Persian language?
@IceGirl Of course, why not. :)
But I know virtually nothing about Persian. :)
Will you teach me?
21:08
How can i help you?
if you want to know
I don't know. Maybe you can start with telling me about the differences between Arabic languages.
start from where? it's hard
I'm not sure... Is there any differences between one Middle-East language to another?
I don't like Arabic language
I hate it a lot
Oh! So Persian is not related to Arabic?

They sound quite similar to [a] and [b] in English, actually.
Maybe they are related, linguistically.
ب = pe, ت = taw
ث = ta
