@DamkerngT. @snailboat nice work :-)
@IceGirl thanks for trying so hard to understand
and asking questions...
...learning is hard work.
Anonymous
It is! And no one else can do that work for you.
Indeed.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I think it's really important to get used to monolingual dictionaries, but they aren't always the best choice.
01:22
There are no "royal roads" in learning.

@snailboat I take it that you have seen the original of Philip Rahv's Image and Idea before you removed that comma. I wanted to read the original too, but couldn't find one on the web. The quoted passage was printed differently in the webpage gave by jwpat7's link and the book Modern Criticism gave by kih1930.
Based on the information I have, I decided to keep that comma, because the book published the entire article, if I understand correctly, while jwpat7's does not. It might be true, as jwpat7 has commented, that that comma looks odd (spurious, in his own words), but because it was there in the book, I couldn't bring myself to delete it.
I thought maybe we could change the link to jwpat7's instead, but then again G.S. Evans didn't quote that sentence in full.
I believe that only Rahv's original can make this clear.

@DamkerngT. Hi
@badass you're welcome
@snailboat Hi
@IceGirl Hello. :)
oh, you are here. good
Are you in a hurry?
yes.because i don't have enough time
Being hurry is always not a good thing...
...especially for learning.
11:27
yes,right
I'm thinking that I will help you learn how to understand sentences better...
...instead of just simply telling the answer.
But you will need to be very patient.
right
Would you like to learn from me?
yes, of course
why not?
Okay, good.
11:29
ready?
good
So, from now on, instead of asking the sentences right away, you must tell which word you think it is the verb of the sentence. Okay?
sure
Good. :)
11:32
To myself, I vowed I would with their confidence. verb is:vowed?
would is modal verb
That's correct.
I star it because you can identify both verbs. :)
Is this still the same lesson as yesterday?
what does to myself mean?
yes
"myself" means "my own self"
I might be able to give a more precise meaning if I can see the whole sentence.
(Just a minute, I need to clear up windows on my screen.)
Okay let's continue.
11:39
After all, I was scarcely older than they were and I shared their mood of protest.I would wear jeans to show I was one of them, and even though I had passed thirty and was married and had two children, I would prove that I could be trusted.
One sentence at a time. Quote, and identify the verb, please. :)
verbs:was,were,shared,would wear,show,was,had passed,was,had,would prove, could be trusted.
Okay, let's see the first sentence.
After all, I was scarcely older than they were and I shared their mood of protest. verbs:was, were, shared
right?
"After all, I was (scarcely older than they were) and I shared (their mood of protest)."
@IceGirl Correct!
11:42
now meaning
Which words you don't understand?
which mood?
mood means feeling
their mood
i know i mean which mood or feeling?
Yes, it's about their feeling.
11:44
mood of protest yes?
Correct!
They seem to be rebels.
and even though I had passed thirty. what does( passed thirty) mean?
It's about the age.
The age that passed 30.
11:47
I would prove that I could be trusted. means?
verbs? :)
would prove and could be trusted
Correct!
I would prove (that I could be trusted).
"that I could be trusted" is what that person wanted to prove.
prove=to show that something is true by providing facts, information
You understand that, right?
11:49
yes
Yes. Show them, with evidences.
I was prepared--even eager--for youthful, strident, moral indignation. why the writer use dashes here?
was prepared=verb
You can think of them (--) as commas.
It's a kind of interruption in the sentence.
you mean I can use the commas instead of dashes?
Usually yes.
But em-dashes (--) make it more obvious.
For example...
Hello, umm..., how are you today.
Hello--umm...--how are you today.
(Not a very good example, but I think you can see the point.)
11:54
good
yes
so so
So you can actually skip things inside --xxxxxx--
Think of the xxxxxx parts as additional information.
You can leave the xxxxxx parts out of the sentence, and you still can understand what the sentence means.
--even eager--for youthful, strident, moral indignation. are they additional information?
You can leave that "even eager" part out.
And your sentence will become "I was prepared for youthful, strident, moral indignation."
11:58
i got it very well
And "even eager" will amplify whatever comes before it.
(In this case, it's about prepared. It means he wasn't only just prepared, he was even "eager")
It's kind of like this.
I was prepared...
oh wait, "prepared" is not enough, I better say "eager"...
... for youthful, strident, ...
So the sentence turned out to be:
"I was prepared--even eager--for youthful, strident, moral indignation."
ok right.got it
Tomorrow i will have an exam about vocabulary and i should make an example for each one can you help me that my sentences is right?
Let's see... Give it a try.
Which words do you have in mind?
12:05
sorry you mean what?
Which part you didn't understand?
grammar
(You can quote my words.)
Huh?
We were talking about vocab., weren't we?
No, my text is finish now i have question about vocab
make sentence for vocab
Okay, ask the questions.
12:08
vehement(adj)= i took part in a vehement demonstration last year. right?
Hmm... This is a difficult word.
But yes, I think your sentence is good.
vigor(n)=he began his new job with vigor.
That looks fine too.
default(n)=i don't know how to make sentence for it please help
Default has several meanings.
Which sense do you want?
12:11
neglect
When you deny to pay your debt?
and also i need default as a verb
A lot of students had defaulted on their student loans.
is it verb yes?
12:13
noun?
please
He tried his best to avoid the default.
It seems like you are going to memorize them, correct?
Is it an oral test?
yes exactly
no
Okay
You can use Google to find great sentences too.
350 words i should to memorize them
Today?
12:15
no, your sentences is very good
no, tomorrow
350 of them in one day?
short sentence is better
yes
(I hope you know most of them already.)
10 or maybe 20 is okay, but more than that in just a day is not a good thing.
Very difficult.
yes i know almost 250
Hmm...
12:17
very hard
ok let's continue i don't have enough time
Let's focus on difficult ones.
ok
extemporaneous?
The president just did an extemporaneous speech.
You know its meaning, right?
inadvertently?
I know all of the meaning
for each word
She inadvertently omitted her professor's name (in her paper).
12:22
permanent?
Hmm...
I can think of permanently.
permanent...
prohibition of smoking is so good. right?
no for permanent please
@IceGirl Perhaps not for smokers. :)
right or wrong?
The following is my permanent address: [...].
The prohibition of smoking is good. is better.
37 secs ago, by Damkerng T.
The following is my permanent address: [...].
12:25
they living together on a permanent basis. right?
Put some address in that [...].
They live together on a permanent basis.
ok
sure?
Yes
You should use simple present tense to state facts.
Not present continuous.
ok
our university prohibit the arrival of boys. right?
Now, I'm not sure...
(university is a singular noun or a plural one)
12:29
when i broke her glasses she wanted forfeit from me.
Okay, I checked, it's a singular noun, so...
correct it please
so right?
Our university prohibits the applications from the boys.
(Not very perfect, but grammatical.)
After I had broken her glasses she wanted the forfeit from me.
in fact in my university there aren't any boys. strange!
Is that prohibited?
12:32
yes
it's better i think so
Maybe.
You can also say: Boys are prohibited in our university.
("Boys" is better than "The boys" in this sentence.)
I hope you could have more time, so I can explain...
sober= drivers have to be sober.
12:35
we adjourn the meeting at 12 o'clock.
I you drank too much last night, you will need to sober before going to work.
@IceGirl This one is ok.
(But at noon might be better.)
for solving the problem the problem we need astute person.
astute?
You can copy our motto here. :)
A room where our astute members sardonically vivisect English sentences, discuss linguistics and talk about anything they want.
To solve the problem, we need an astute person.
(You say a person--one person, but two people; not two persons.)
ok
nobody should get angry with censure.
Hmm... (Thinking should it be angry at...)
But I think it's okay.
12:40
a city with a large transient population.
@IceGirl This is not a sentence.
Do you need sentences, or a phrase is okay?
(To have a sentence, you need a verb.)
please make sentence for transient as a an (adj) and a (noun)
yes sorry
X is a city with a large transient population.
(Put some city name in place of X.)
no only sentence
Hummmmmmmmmmmmm
@IceGirl What is it?
(Any city will do.)
12:43
what what?
For example, New York is a city with a large transient population.
(Whether is it true or not, I can't be sure, though.)
here is an adj?
oh come on
Please calm down.
12:44
if it's wrong i loose my mark
The sentence is grammatically correct.
But I don't know if it is correct as a fact.
aha
now noun for it please
bad days are transient take it easy. right?
for noun?
@IceGirl This one is still adj.
I'm thinking. Hmm...
12:47
the life of a person is a transient thing. right?
Still an adj.
This one is hard.
help
please
I'm thinking... Need more time.
ok
i'm waiting
The city is trying to reduce power transients.
How far did we go?
Is it halfway yet?
12:50
only 7 page
7 pages left, or we just got past 7 pages? How many pages do we have?
no, 51 pages left
but some pages are small
I'm starting to get tired.
12:51
ok, no problem but............
(Thinking of sentences for unfamiliar words is exhausting.)
But what?
if you don't help me i don't know what should i do
You can use Google.
Let me check...
12:54
Google is not good the sentences are so hard and difficult and too long
Okay, maybe you need to learn how to strip the sentence down.
Doesn't that sound like fun?
cur(n)
:)
Let's try Google.
no please
You try Google it, and paste a sentence you like here.
12:55
please please
Please, I know I can't help you through the remaining 51 pages.
It's really too long.
So I'm gonna tell you how to help yourself instead.
Isn't that good?
yes right i don't ask you all of the words
Some example sentences are really short.
Among the example sentences, I found this nice one:
Censure motion takes place next month.
but i wrote my sentences i want to know it's right or wrong
I believe that almost all of the sentences there are grammatically correct.
You just need to be sure that it's a real sentence.
