5:00 PM
I never understood what conjugation means.

In math?
:P

In chemistry and linguistics.

> In linguistics, conjugation /kɒndʒuːɡeɪʃʌn/ is the creation of derived forms of a verb from its principal parts by inflection (alteration of form according to rules of grammar). Conjugation may be affected by person, number, gender, tense, aspect, mood, voice, or other grammatical categories.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_conjugation

So, what is it?
Changing?
Change?

Creation

5:01 PM
Example?

make --> made

So, what is the conjugation here? Made?

The creation.
-->

Aaah.
But still don't get it.

I think made would be called a "conjugated form".

5:03 PM
(In chemistry)

Ahh... I don't know its chemistry use.
Hey, this sounds like a nice defintion.
> The word "conjugation" is derived from a Latin word that means "to link together". In organic chemistry, it is used to describe the situation that occurs when p systems are "linked together".

It just looks like. Hey! Do you think I haven't read those?

I just thought you needed something easy to read. -- sobbing

Reading

> ...Whenever I hear a mother say," if so-and-so told you to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you do it?" I think of her. On my order, she would have jumped.
Ahh... actually it could make sense.
At first glance, I thought she referred to mother, but it doesn't.

But it did perfect sense to me.
I think this is a correct sentence.

Yes, now it makes sense.
The punctuation ... could be improved, though.
Very likely, that her had already passed away or at least not staying with that I.

A: In (the) Six Figures

Russ ShadeFor crying out loud, "remodel" should not be used as a noun.

Agreed. But it doesn't answer the question.
Hmm... it could be a great comment, actually.
Evening, @Jim!

Omo is a brand in Thailand, usually means "white" as in white white.
Aloha!

Yes. A sort of slang. :-)
Ahalo!

I had missed that.
Holahla.

o_O

Hailoahoa!

Some of my US friends are Buddhists. I use OMO with them. To me it jokingly means "Oh my Oneness." :-)

5:22 PM
Hullo!

Ahh

Oh My Ostriches!
(The only meaningful phrase outta OMO)

That's just as good.

Saying "Oh My Oneness" makes me think of Kung Fu Hustle!

I heart that movie.

5:23 PM
:D

@JimReynolds Like you heart me? The directors are screwed.

I'll now see it as a white ostrich.

I've seen Buddha Palm before in other wuxia, but the one in that movie was the most impressive one.
@JimReynolds LOL

@JimReynolds Perfect conclusion.

I'm very fond of you, as you well now, you little . . . .

Wow, the stats of this question is very interesting!

Yes.

Which question?

5:26 PM
And it has already accepted.

That is mind-exploding!

I guess the OP viewed it twice and the answerer viewed it twice.
Then the OP accepted it. Done.
:D

Or the OP and their sockpuppet viewed it...
@DamkerngT. Done:
Welcome to ELL! For crying out loud, this doesn't answer the question. Please take a tour or have a look at the help center to get a hang of how SE Q &A sites work. This might make a very good comment, but it doesn't answer the question. Once you have 50 rep, you can comment on any post. — MARamezani 6 mins ago

Thanks!

good night guys...see u tomorrow...

5:29 PM
I'm going back to my couch. (Feeling like wanting to watch Chucky)
@Man_From_India Good night!

@Man_From_India TTYL!

Is this October? I switched from Chucky to HBO, and what do I get? Vacancy!

Vacancy. . . A couple's car breaks down?

Sheesh. I should go do some reading about movies.

Or Vacancy: MAR's teachers knocked on his head, but it was vacant of brains?
O.o

5:36 PM
@JimReynolds A fly is flying there.

@JimReynolds That's right!

Q: Does 'Was' necessitate a situation which no longer holds?

RookatuI am curious about whether the word 'was' implies a situation which is no longer the case. I was under the impression (and still am ;)) that it did not carry a hard logical implication of that nature, but have always been aware that there is a soft implication to that effect. Here is an example: ...

WOW!
NICE!

I think lyrics are off-topic.

@Dam, you said you suggested that people (or someone) listen to non-English songs to learn English. Snailboat asked why, and
you replied that It breaks the ice?

5:43 PM
Yes, I did!

Sheesh. Thanks (Or Tanks, if you may prefer)! I purposed a tag-merging academy a while ago. It stood still like water of a pond in a bright, sunny morning. But this, this... I appreciate it and applaud accordingly. +1 — MARamezani 1 min ago
Sigh

Well, I think asking the meaning of words in lyrics doesn't always mean problematic subjectivity.

Takes a post-apocalyptic look on his face

5:46 PM
Honesty don't fly could be in any text. But it should generally only require a trip to a dictionary.

I suppose "as-like" tag wouldn't make sense to native speakers. ;-)
@JimReynolds Ah, I didn't mean the meaning (in my break the ice). I meant it for listening practice.
I know, my break the ice was used figurativelily figuratively. :P

Oh. I thought you were talking about the question Honesty don't fly.

@JimReynolds Yes, but only the lyrics thingy.

Ok. Gotcha.

It's phuunny how many people favorite their Q.

5:49 PM
But to non-English songs?

Yes, maybe I should elaborate a bit. How about that in the new room? ;-)

in English Language Learners, yesterday, by Damkerng T.
Someone posted a question on ELL asking how they can improve their listening (because they can't understand native speakers, in real-life, in movies, etc.), and I remember I told the OP to listen to "non-English" songs. snailboat asked me why? I replied "It breaks the ice!"

@DamkerngT. .

> An example (from The New Yorker) of a phrase with a false title (psychologist John Hayes)
It's rather clear that CopperKettle meant that "psychologist" was a false title.
Wikipedia has a page for it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_title
Assuming that CopperKettle didn't create that page, someone else recognizes this term too.
So that it doesn't make sense to DJ McMayhem doesn't mean that it's not in use.
> Why is terminology (28) a tag, when it could easily be merged with word-choice (931), or maybe word-meaning (539)?
Hmm... "terminology" and "word-choice" don't mean the same to me.
But, yes, I think it could mean the same to others.

@DamkerngT. They're used the same way, iirc.

(By the way, "green" and "blue" are the same color in Japanese. -- This is not correct correct, though, snailboat knows this better than me.)
@MARamezani I think the problem is the OP can tag their questions with whatever they think is right. And users with enough reps can edit tags of a question to anything they think right, as well.

6:06 PM
@DamkerngT. But still, tags do need cleaning.

Sorry for the triple ping!
Agree. Though I'm not sure how.
So I'm not really for or against a tag cleanup; I'm just not sure if it will be much better than it is.

@MAR, give more thought/thoughts to something? THIS IS A TEST.

@JimReynolds YES. WAIT, WHY ARE WE YELLING?

Let me give it more thoughts.

O.O
Why you . . . !

@DamkerngT. Good stuff! I'm going to go and finish a post, but I might come back with a grammar Q later. Btw, you or anyone else know what happened to Listenever? I saw they used to pop in here. Miss their questions!

I'm not sure, but I remember that she had a pause once earlier, then she came back, asked about listening, posted a few questions from J. K. Rowling's, and I think I've never seen her again since.
I hope she will come back again some time in the future.

Q: The vowel in Bulde

Wow, didn't the Op compress it too much?!
(It sounds a bit robot-like!)

Maybe just a low quality mic? c:

9:46 PM
Also, I can't hear -ing as usual. I wish they would've padded the clip on both ends a bit.
Some players can't start playing at the 0.00s exact position.
It's the same problem at the end of clip.

It seems to work for me!

Your player must be better than my VLC! :-)
It sounds like a typical bulge to me.
Perhaps in a BrE accent.

I'm using the built-in HTML player ;P

Ah! My Firefox won't play it in-place!

Blasphemy!
Get Google Chrome!
;)

9:51 PM
LOL
Nah! I like my Firefox, but thanks!

Gah, there should be one universal browser, so that everything works on it c:
No more faffing about with CSS to make it work on all browsers!

Hehe!
I think we tend to have more browsers! Especially on small devices.

It shall be called Chirefoperari.

@DamkerngT. Perhaps so c:

I remember I've heard a Chinese tycoon announce his own smartphone, running on his own OS! (I guess it's based on either Android or Linux. Not sure.)

Android I think, Linux isn't for mobiles (right?)

It could be possible, if one really want to.

Although I suppose it doesn't matter, since Linux is still running on a computer.
^

9:55 PM
Old Kindles were also Linux-based.
Hehe!

Oh, I wasn't aware!

Oh, and don't forget something like this!
:D
Only 169,90€, they say. :-)
I just ordered an octacore phone recently. Still waiting for it.

Oh, wow!
Nice :o
What's the model?

Not sure, but made in China, so it's a bit risky, but I think it will work fine.
I think it's based on a design of Xiaomi, but this one is unbranded, so it's a bit cheaper.

Note: most things (phones included) are made in china (although I hear the "made in China" stickers are made in Taiwan ;))!

10:00 PM
Oh, yes! Indeed!
Does the clip sound like a BrE accent to you?

I think so c:

Yay!

I have decided not to come to this room @DamkerngT. Jasper here btw.

Aww... It's okay. It's up to you.
Hello, Jasper!

You are up very early.

10:10 PM
It's nice to see you in green for a change. :-)
Oh, I'm still up. :-)

That's all I wanna say, bye!

Oh, no! That's so quick!
Good bye!

I will still be in rooms 36 and 168.

I wish you all the best!

What do you guys think of using pop-culture references in sophisticated writing?
Something like this:
> In verbalising his thoughts-- no matter if you agree with his view-points on the plethora of topics he covers, or nah, Tim has entrapped the largest of followings.
Wait, no, that's awful.
Never mind ;P

Q: "five thousand tons of water *flow/flows*"?

user18982 Every minute, five thousand tons of water flow/flows over a cliff into the river below. Should the verb 'flow' be conjugated in singular or plural in this sentence?

I hope we can add something about notational agreement and grammatical agreement to the question.

You've lost me, perhaps you could explain? c:

I've tried a few COCA/GloWbE searches, and found both.

What the heck is notational agreement?

Ah, okay, I don't really know know it, but here is what I think.
I think both alternatives are possible, depending on how we look at it.
> a) Five thousand tons of water flow ...
b) Five thousand tons of water flows ...
a) uses grammatical agreement, b) uses notational agreement.

I think that they both work fine.

11:07 PM
Let me retrieve my old bookmarked page:
> Two minutes is all I need. (Notional agreement)
Two minutes are all I need. (Grammatical agreement)
Is three kilos enough? (Notional agreement)
Are three kilos enough? (Grammatical agreement)

Hm, what's the definitive difference?

That's the problem. I don't know enough to say anything definitive!

D:
Oh noes!

?
> In grammar, the correspondence of a verb with its subject in person and number, and of a pronoun with its antecedent in person, number, and gender.
http://grammar.about.com/od/ab/g/agreementerm.htm
> notional agreement: Agreement (or concord) of verbs with their subjects and of pronouns with their antecedent nouns on the basis of meaning rather than grammatical form.
http://grammar.about.com/od/mo/g/notionalagreementterm.htm
There is still another kind of agreement (or concord), proximal.
> In addition to grammatical concord and notional concord, the principle of proximity sometimes plays a part in subject-verb agreement. This principle is the tendency, especially in speech, for the verb to agree with the closest (pro)noun, even when that (pro)noun is not the head of the subject noun phrase.
http://grammar.about.com/od/pq/g/proximityagreement.htm

If you don't mind, I think I'll refer back to here tomorrow c:

11:13 PM
Okay! See you tomorrow!

Ah, I didn't mean it like that!
I meant that I'm not ready to read through literature on grammar yet, sorry!

Oh, I see. Sorry for my misunderstanding!

Sorry for my being unclear :)

I just hope someone might mention about different kinds of agreements and maybe a bit about whether tons or water is the head of "five thousand tons of water".
@Iplodman Human languages aren't math; ambiguity is one of their features. ;-)

@DamkerngT. Nice quote! c:

11:17 PM
Thanks!

I think I may start using my blog again.
Actually, I have.

Yay!
