When I studied optics, diffraction was explained using the Huygens-Fresnel principle. Our equations were based on integrals over the diffraction surface, where each point was considered to act as a source of spherical waves.
In my mind I made a connection between this model and the 3rd and 4th Maxwell's equations. As it seemed to be commonly stated, a time-varying E field would create a curl in the B field and vice-versa, which would lead to a self-propagating wave.
