@peterh That's...both a good and a bad idea. Nietzsche's works are strange, and I've heard convincing arguments that they are ultimately more related to his own personal struggles than to a general moral philosophy
@peterh
All capital things look bad, first it looks as you would shout, second it looks as if you would try to attract extra attention on immoral ways. — peterh 28 mins ago
@ACuriousMind I've seen a significant spike in the alignment distribution at the LE.
"immoral" is a tad too strong, innit?
@peterh The only truly lawful evil character I remember I had as my profile pic was Edwin Odesseiron
And that was because I just think he's both hilarious and handsome :)
@ACuriousMind is this your new profile pic you're talking about?
00:05
@EmilioPisanty Yes, like almost all my pictures, it's a character from an RPG, in this case Kreia/Darth Traya from KotoR 2
@EmilioPisanty I am thinking on a meta SE post asking for to make it simply impossible. I tried to help/protect goodstanding newbies, and not the spammers. Attracting attention on immoral ways, yes it is spam.
@EmilioPisanty And I am nearly sure, that the OP knows very well what he is doing, but I can't prove it. This is why I noted him so nicely.
@ACuriousMind Well, I know d&d, but not these newer games. I found the tabletop better, despite that pen&paper is not so well suited for numerical simulations, it is also not limited by them. I checked your avatars by the google image search, this leaded me to different, mainly wiki pages.
@EmilioPisanty I am thinking on it, maybe I could ask this on the meta SE with an all capital title :-) The title should be: "Is it possible that an all capital title is okay?" <- and this with all capitals
@peterh Ah, but the tabletop aspect of role playing, is, to me, the boring part. The fascinating thing is to play characters. The good computer games are those that allow for that, but the pen and paper versions are infinitely better for that.
There's nothing so interesting as being the game master while a group of players does things you never even planned for, yet you have to keep the action going, and you have to keep it internally coherent
00:22
@ACuriousMind I found this nearly impossible while you want to give them the same freedom as they would have in that world.
@ACuriousMind I think a completely free play had been very funny, where there are absolutely no pre-constructed sessions, but the players are free to decide their own initiatives. Unfortunately, most of my players simply didn't understand this conception.
Well, of course you need the right group of players for this kind of role playing. There are groups who enjoy being led through a predetermined story.
But those are the boring ones. I generally just throw my players into a reasonably sized sandbox and react to whatever they decide to do
@ACuriousMind I always called this sessions "movies" :-)
@ACuriousMind How can you have time for rpg games, for tabletop rpg, for net and for physics? This time conflict hadn't the best effect to my career
@peterh It helps not to have many other hobbies ;) I have about one RPG session every two weeks, that leaves plenty of time for everything else
I guess it also helps that I mainly improvise during those sessions. I've read so many fantasy and sci fi novels during my school days that I don't really need to invent new stories, I just adapt the ones I already know
00:40
[To be elaborated later, random thoughts] 1) Method of image fail for CP violating particles?, 2) method of image of a complicated object by 'partition' the dielectric into a (insert word) of tangent spaces and thus each image charge is found by the standard image problem), then add all image charges together to find the overall image charge and position in the object?
00:54
@ACuriousMind Your avatars get creepier and creepier
@BernardMeurer Mirroring real life, then :P
@ACuriousMind Lol. How far are you from Mannheim?
@BernardMeurer Mannheim is right next to Heidelberg, so...not far
Hmmmmmmmmm
HMMMMM
It's like fifteen minutes from main station to main station I think
00:57
cough
Hm
The plot thickens
I more or less regularly go see movies in Mannheim because Heidelberg doesn't have a proper place to see movies anymore :P
I have a good friend in Mannheim
and I have you in Heidelberg
and the girl in Wiesbaden
and another friend in Bonn
I is planning a crossing
By October I'll be even closer since I'm moving rather close to Heidelberg's main station
@BernardMeurer Do it! Let's steal @ChrisWhite and @DanielSank's title of being the only h barers to ever meet
I'm trying really hard to understand this uni calendar hahaha
I met Daniel! I went to his wedding even :D
That was very funny
@BernardMeurer Oh wow, I didn't realize that already happened
01:02
Lol, yeah
but we'll be the first in Europe!
Take that America!
For fucks sake, I can read portuguese
and I have no clue what they're telling me with this calendar
@BernardMeurer You'll have to hurry, I might visit Munich sometime because by now I really know a lot of people there
@Danu Should come too
I think I have one month vacation in February
So I may stay a week in the Frankfurt/Mannheim/Heidelberg/Wiesbaden ring
and then another up in Bonn
During holidays I'm sometimes closer to Bonn than to Heidelberg
Since I hail from the great city of Wuppertal :P
I wanted to go to Flensburg again too...
It's my favorite city in Germany
If I was bill gates I'd just buy flensburg
make everyone leave
and stay there by myself
It's a lovely place
@BernardMeurer oO
You'd at least let the brewers stay, wouldn't you?
01:11
Well, I'm not insane so yeah
@BernardMeurer Well, you are the guy with the potato army, so I'm not making any assumptions here
Flensburger is like
DA BEST
Does anyone here speak portuguese
I can't read this thing
It's too portuguese
The best Northern beer is Jever
01:14
Why can't they just make make a proper calendar?
@ACuriousMind Jever? Never had that
Radeberger is good too
@BernardMeurer It's very bitter compared to the average Pils, but very good
@BernardMeurer Well, most of the well-known Pils variants are fine
But beer is more than Pilsner
And although I personally detest Kölsch, you'll need to try it when you're in Bonn
I really like Bock
@BernardMeurer That just means it has a bit more alcohol than average, it's not a specific taste of beer
Well yeah it's a strong lager right?
Eh, you won't get much that's called "lager" here, and "Bock" really just means it has more alcohol than the standard. You can make a "Bock" out of most beers.
01:23

Q: Is this (meta question) in scope for meta?

Alfred CentauriIs this meta question in scope for meta? On my view, the general question of "Is reposting a deleted answer acceptable?" is clearly in scope. But it isn't clear to me that the linked question is. It seems plausible that "Can someone look have a look at this?" type questions aren't.

I guess a Pilsner is technically a type of "lager" in the terminology of the rest of the world, but everyone will just stare blankly at you if you start talking about a "lager" here
This is all to difficult
give me a dark beer
I'll be glad
@BernardMeurer Ah, what kind? Schwarzbier? Alt? Dunkles Weizen? ;)
in fact just give me any beer that isn't Cintra and I'll be happy
schwarzbier and Dunkles yeah
@BernardMeurer What a "Dunkles" or "Helles" is actually varies by region :P
01:27
@ACuriousMind I will strangle you with my calculator charger
@BernardMeurer That's a harsh reaction! We just take our beer seriously :P
@ACuriousMind your avatar is scary
35 mins ago, by ACuriousMind
@BernardMeurer Mirroring real life, then :P
@ACuriousMind How much do you pay for beer there?
@BernardMeurer Half a liter: Between 0.50 and 2.00€ in the supermarket and between 3€ and 5€ at a bar.
01:35
That's cheap, the supermarket at least
our bars are cheaper though
Well, at a bar you typically buy the stuff drafted from the keg
Buying the bottled stuff at a bar is just stupid :P
@BernardMeurer It is, I bought a crate of reasonably good beer today at 10.50€ for 10 liters.
Pics or it didn't happen
that's really cheap
To be honest, I don't care all that much for draft beer, it's just as good as bottled for all I care
Well, it's nothing out of the ordinary - the expensive beers go up to 20 or 25€ a crate, but the cheap-but-not-horrible stuff is always at 10-15
You can easily find juice more expensive than beer :D
That's what first world means
This should be UN's determining factor for development
@BernardMeurer I think it might really just be that there's a lot of breweries here?
And that beer, as such, isn't heavily taxed
@ACuriousMind No no, you don't understand.
I've met three hbar users in person.
There should be a medal for this...
Iff I manage to see Danu & ACM we'll be even Dan
@BernardMeurer I can make that grow a lot
@BernardMeurer True, obviously.
I'll need to drink all the beers again to accurately describe their taste, obviously ;)
01:46
@BernardMeurer Oh for heaven's sake that's child's play.
@ACuriousMind That's what she said
@DanielSank I'm still young!
@BernardMeurer wat
@DanielSank Americana was the only one I really liked
01:47
@BernardMeurer Fair enough.
1 min ago, by ACuriousMind
@BernardMeurer I can make that grow a lot
@ACuriousMind Lol
@ACuriousMind I'm aiming to get to 100, but beer prices inflated here so I stopped buying
Hopefully Portugal will be cheap
I have a friend who's in the thousands of distinct beers consumed.
@DanielSank This poor European doesn't even know what the heck a "cream soda" is
01:48
@DanielSank You told me about him, he's a legend
@ACuriousMind It's essentially carbonated water, sugar, and artificial flavor of a particular kind.
Orange soda has orange artificial flavor. Cream soda has cream artificial flavor.
I...see
Although the "cream" flavor is more some combination of caramel, cream, and vanilla.
I've never seen cream artificial flavor here, I think
...and honey in the good cases.
01:50
@ACuriousMind try Americana Honey Cream
it's amazing
@ACuriousMind Not like actual cream... it's really just more of a vanilla/caramel sort of combination.
@DanielSank Yeah, that doesn't sound like a conceivable flavour of a drink to me
@ACuriousMind Well, it is.
It either doesn't exist here or it has thus far been well-hidden from me
Does "carbonated rotted grains with bitter essence of hops" sound good to you?
01:52
@DanielSank I didn't mean it sounds good/bad, I meant I can't recall that ever being offered here
@ACuriousMind wut
> Yeah, that doesn't sound like a conceivable flavour of a drink to me
I can't conceive of it because it's not something Germans drink!
@DanielSank You have to remember, Germans only drink their enemy's blood and beer
I can't even decide if I think it might be delicious or disgusting
@BernardMeurer ...
right
01:54
::raises horn, quaffs mead::
::raises flagon of mead. Quaffs::
::Goes and gets home made mead from fridge and offers to @ACuriousMind::
::Makes no promises that it doesn't taste terrible::
::looks in horror::
@BernardMeurer Go hack your calculator.
There's nothing else to do on it lol
::swears eternal loyalty to @DanielSank, fills horn with home made mead::
01:56
^ Damn straight!
An offer of home-made alcoholic beverage is a bond not to be taken lightly!
On this subject
I'm almost out of beer
Every time I read Yeast I think of yeast infection and it's horrible
02:03
Can't help it
@BernardMeurer yeast is a wonderful thing :P
And I'm also out of beer and should go to bed
Isabel saw that recently
thought it was nice lol
look at the license plate
Yeah i saw that.
02:06
@DanielSank I'll leave that stuff to the professionals and contend myself with infused stuff
@ACuriousMind Infused?
@DanielSank Take a bottle of clear, mostly tasteless schnaps and dump whatever flavour you want into it
Best bases are good vodka or Korn.
Am I the only person here who really likes tonic water?
Can go horribly wrong, but also horribly right
Taking fruits almost always gives tasty things
@ACuriousMind Never heard of tasteless schnaps.
I always think of schnaps as flavored liquor.
02:09
@DanielSank I'm not sure what the proper word in English is
Good vodka has no taste, right?
@ACuriousMind vodka?
@ACuriousMind Mostly no taste.
Good vodka will have you pass out before you can feel the taste
@BernardMeurer No no, that's Everclear.
@ACuriousMind Is moonshine legal there?
Everclear is a brand name of rectified spirit sold by American company Luxco. Luxco Brand is made from corn. It is bottled at 151-proof (75.5% ABV) and 190-proof (95% ABV). As of 2013, sale of the latter is prohibited in California, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Washington, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Minnesota. == Similar brands == Luxco also manufactures Golden Grain Alcohol as the same spirit without the express brand name. A competitor, Gem Clear is bottled by the Quality Control Distilling Co. in Bardstown, Kentucky using roughly the same...
02:10
@DanielSank Yeah, so...vodka tends to give strange flavours unless it's really high quality. Korn is a much safer choice as a base
@DanielSank Yeah, that goes into the right direction
@BernardMeurer no
@ACuriousMind Wat?!
And you guys think we have strict alcohol laws!
Maybe we're hitting the boundaries of my English, but if "moonshine" refers to self-brewed liquor, that will not be legal. You need a license and official supervision to be allowed to brew liquor.
@DanielSank US laws are stupid
@ACuriousMind Yep, that's what I meant
Even if it's for your own consumption?
@BernardMeurer [citation needed]
@ACuriousMind What's the strongest liquor you can get there?
02:13
(but of course I agree in several cases)
@BernardMeurer That's less illegal than brewing it to sell it, but it's still illegal
@ACuriousMind wow
@ACuriousMind Sounds like a dumb law
Here I can brew whatever the hell I want as long as I don't sell it or go over some ridiculous annual limit.
@BernardMeurer Something like 90%, I think
02:15
@ACuriousMind So the Poincare dual of a point is just a bump $n$-form with volume 1, right? But can't the sign be different?
I have definitely drunk tea with 85% liquor
Yeah I can make 200 gallons per year.
@ACuriousMind ...why?
@ACuriousMind Lol
@0celo7 not now, I was headed for bed half an hour ago and stayed only to argue about alcohol :D
You're up late.
02:16
@DanielSank To get drunk, obviously ;)
Ah yes.
But of course.
It's not something I would recommend or necessarily do again, but at the time, it seemed like the appropriate thing to do
I have a funny story about alcohol.
6
I stayed at a friend's house to take care of their dogs for a weekend.
Saturday morning I woke up and let the dogs out to pee, etc.
Then I headed to the refrigerator for breakfast.
There was a half of a watermelon. Nice.
So I get it out, slice off a big chunk and start eating.
Tasted a little funky but probably just had been in the fridge for a while.
Nope, vodka watermelon.
Did nothing for the rest of the day.
Hahaha, nice
@ACuriousMind I was actually kind of annoyed.
I hadn't planned on spending my Saturday sleeping on the couch.
02:26
Yeah, getting unintentionally drunk can be kind of annoying, I get that
You know "Hey, it's a beautiful day! Let's go have fun. Oops, I'm flat drunk at 8:30".
Anyway, I need to go to bed else I'm not going to see the sun tomorrow, and I need to work against my vampiric reputation!
Good night, everyone!
Goodnight.
If you're even in my area please do stop by for a bottle of mead.
I mean that.
@ACuriousMind See ya!
@DanielSank You didn't give me mead :(
@BernardMeurer What are you up to this late
02:32
@BernardMeurer You didn't come to my place!
I gave you a burrito, jeez.
Okay, okay, you're right, you gave me my first burrito ever
They don't have burritos in Rio?
@0celo7 Having a beer and reading university rules
No
Wait are you in Lisbon
No
I go on the 5th
02:35
@BernardMeurer AMS is having a book sale. There are two books I want to get but won't need for months. Is it acceptable to buy them now to avoid a greater cost in the future?
@0celo7 I have a glass on my desk. Should I fill it with water?
A clever metaphor?
@0celo7 yes, that sounds like a good idea
@DanielSank yes
@DanielSank I will buy these books eventually.
@0celo7 I will drink water. But should I fill my glass?
02:37
But there's a 40% sale right now.
@DanielSank What if the price of water goes up 40% tomorrow?
Wouldn't you want to get all the water now
@0celo7 What?
@DanielSank Stock up on water while it's cheap?
@0celo7 You should take a philosophy class dawg
I did
@0celo7 Anyway. Get the books
02:44
Yeah
Trying to think of which AMS books are interesting.
Hamilton's Ricci Flow and Helgason.

1 hour later…
04:02
@JohnRennie Like clockwork.
5 a.m. and John's at his PC. Sad really :-)
class starts tomorrow.
well, today
in 9 hours
Morning John
Any servers gone rebel?
I should probably go to sleep.
04:21
@BernardMeurer Haven't checked yet
looking good so far though ...
Oh no
you've jinxed it now
04:39
@SirCumference: you asked earlier if any GR heads were around ...
@JohnRennie What's your favorite animal?
To eat or to pet? :-)
To eat, probably lamb. To pet - to be honest I've never really seen the point of pets so I don't have a favourite.
Did I see earlier that you're starting college in Lisbon in September?
Yeah, I get there on the 5th
04:54
If you let me know your address once you're safely installed I can ship that laptop to you.
It has no disk and only one working USB port - will that still be useful?
Hell yeah it will! It will be a while until I can get one myself
I'd kiss you if you were a young German girl
Well, one day I might be reincarnated :-)
When we talked about you going to Germany I thought you meant from Brazil. Since Portugal is in the EU I can easily ship direct to you.
Even though y'all bailed out from it?
04:56
And I imaging it would be good to have the laptop for college
@BernardMeurer we're still in the EU for at least two years. Actually there's a chance we may never leave ...
@JohnRennie But won't everyone who voted go haystack then?
@BernardMeurer Leaving is an enormously complicated business because there are so many laws that need to be passed. It will take at least two years just to sort out all the paperwork.
I think there's a good chance that in two years everyone will be so bored about it that the whole thing will be quietly dropped.
Ah, this reminds me of something!
In these past 2 weeks I've been getting my visa sorted
well, that involved getting copies of a lot of documents
and authenticating them
(the copies)
