Q: Collaborate With Chemistry.se?

JoeHobbitThere is a significant overlap between physics and chemistry. For example: Explanation of "thermite vs ice" explosion Therefore I suggest that questions tagged "chemistry" on physics.se be displayed and editable on both chemistry.se and physics.se. The reverse would also be beneficial: question...

Q: What exists in the Space between atoms

RhysWApologies to all if this has been asked before, I searched but was unable to find one similar. This is a question that has been bugging me for a while that i haven't really been able to find a suitable answer for. I am aware that the space between an atoms nucleus and its electron cloud is te...

woah this one just got me a badge for 1k views :L first question on any site for that to happen for me

@CrazyBuddy What's on Friday?

11:32 AM
@ManishEarth Ahh... I've only 2 classes on Friday (till noon) and now, the professors postponed to next Friday as they're going on a vacation... :)

@ManishEarth You don't have classes today?
I saw you at noon... o_O
(you're always online...) Duh -_-

@CrazyBuddy Had my laptop open in math (No internet though), and then went to the wrong venue for a lab lecture and was too lazy to go to the right one. I instead went to the dept comp room (comfiest in insti)

Oh... I see :D
@ManishEarth what's that..???

11:36 AM
@ManishEarth comfiest

mostest comfortablest
comfy-est
whatever :P

What..??? o.O I thought it was some celebration goin' on :D

Q: Redundant tags: vote

Dimension10As suggested by Natheniel in Redundant tags I, I'll make a single question and let people vote on the answers (containing redundant tags to burninate.).

12:42 PM
Are strings always 1-dimensional? If so, why not, e.g., 2-dimensional?

12:55 PM
@Gugg Because then they become branes
And zombinos eat them up

@ManishEarth this made me chuckle

But seriously, in M-theory strings/branes are N-dimensional. Or M-dimensional.
@RhysW I doubt you got the full joke there though :P A zombino is the superpartner of a zombie

@ManishEarth if youre going to insult me im just going to leave :P

@RhysW Ha!
We both know you'll come crawling back in a couple of days to bug @ChrisWhite :P
Or me

nope i have my own, better, room with blackjack and hookers!

12:59 PM
I find it interesting that 5 hours of computation produces a mere 12MB file. Makes you realize the sheer size of a megabyte.

@RhysW Yeah... I'll come with you dear Rhys... They're insulting me too :D

Though the plot gif is slightly less

:P no point me leaving, ill get insulted whatever room i go in xd

:P
Well, you have powaz in The Pod Bay, you can't get insulted there

you kiding? :P space is the most hostile site ive been on yet! (excluding the room)

1:03 PM
If Manish hadn't ever become a mod............ :P

@CrazyBuddy .....I would still be a mod
double diamond ftw, hypothetically take away one and I'm still a mod

almost left the site completely a couple of weeks ago actually

@RhysW space?
why?
That ramjet guy?

who?
i dont even know who that is xD
but yeah i almost left space

@RhysW where? vacation?

1:07 PM
i dont post answers there anymore

@RhysW hostility? That's not good

@RhysW why??? o_O

@CrazyBuddy because the last time i posted what i thought was a good answer on a subject i knew soemthing about it degraded from constructive criticism to bullying

@RhysW Why do you care about these things..? They're frequent in the internet..!

@CrazyBuddy for good reasons i'd rather not get into on here

1:10 PM
Haven't you seen any posts against a particular guy from unknown users..?
@RhysW So, you left Space.SE totally? o_O
(or just lurking around,, here & there...)

@CrazyBuddy i stay to the chat room

@RhysW Well, though I've temporarily paused my awful answers for a while, I read Physics.SE posts almost everyday...
@ManishEarth: Nowadays, I've become an enthusiast of Coding Horror... :D
Know what??? My blog is on the its way... ;-)

@RhysW Me too, but for different reasons.
Also, have a look at this
And tell me the contradiction :P

@ManishEarth @RhysW: I stay out of Space.SE for a wholly different reason...

@ManishEarth the thign is its made me wary to post on any other site too, i havent posted an answer anywhere in weeks
@ManishEarth haha synonyms of quantum mechanics xD

1:18 PM
@RhysW Nope, not it

hmmm
nope im not seeing it
there is a tag for tags?

something to do with you
hmm

Know what??? My blog is on the its way... ;-)

isnt that posted from before you joined the site?

1:20 PM
Exactly

by like 2 years xD
how?!
@CrazyBuddy you have a blog?

@RhysW I'm trashing a few things... It'll be advertised in a month :)

@CrazyBuddy whats it about?

@RhysW These things happen at times. It's the Internet. Firstly, it's best to just keep displaying your best behavior even if/when provoked.. You don't have to reply if you don't want to. Ignoring is always a good option, at least temporarily. I also try to understand that intentions aren't always transmitted well by the Internet, so it's good to be a bit accomodative and not assume that everyone's out to get you :P
@RhysW I didn't post it, Sklivvz did. But he was getting pinged too much by it (check the recently posted answers). Instead of doing a close-and-merge I told him to reassociate it to me

@RhysW: Don't get addicted to what he says... It's just an expansion of what I said..! :P

1:23 PM
Yes, comm team and devs can do that.

@ManishEarth ahh that makes sense

@RhysW I thought of starting on a particular topic (of course, it'd be Physics)... But, it has many things like, my experience on SE, etc... :D

ahh
i have a blog
i havent used it a lot though

@ManishEarth its just hard not to, i dont think ive ever seen it happen on SE before, its just ruined the site for me really, especially given the comments by others on the views of experts vs enthusiasts followed by the abbrasive attitude against some of my posts, it just doesnt really encourage me to even want to contribute

1:27 PM
@RhysW Sort of the reason why I shied away from Wikipedia

In this scheme, I'm much better than you both @ManishEarth @RhysW :D

@RhysW Again, ignoring is an option. Also flagging when it's clearly abrasive.

So far my experience of space has been, unless you are an expert on the subject and can answer without making a single mistake or a single out of place resource then its not worth posting. Its probbaly not true but in my small experience its either been know everything in depth or we dont care

@RhysW What? If that's the way it is, then I shouldn't answer anything in Physics.SE ;-)

@RhysW Hmm. That ... shouldn't happen.
@RhysW On Physics.SE, when I'm sticking my nose where it doesn't belong (i.e. ansering stuff I know nothing about :P), I usually hat my answer with "I'm not sure about this, comments appreciated". But that's not something that should be necessary

1:30 PM
@RhysW: Link?? (if you can) :D

Shouldn't be hard to find out, but I'm not sure if it's relevant here
@RhysW But if you find such an environment, point it out to others. On meta. Or in an email to community@.

He got you @RhysW... That team mods can't come looking for what's happening there... ;-)

@RhysW Also, try not to let one bad experience shape your view of the site. (unless you've had many?)

This site is fine, people seem overjoyed when someone is trying to learn about something, workplace is fine because if you can justify your points its fine, game dev is fine, like here poeple like that you are trying, but that hasnt been my experience anywhere else
the problem is most of the time i dont have anything thats standalone obvious, its all situational or intangible, so not really a lot i can do about it

@RhysW Ahh.... Then, pause it for a while... You'll catch-up later anyway :)
pretty much automatically :D

1:37 PM
@RhysW That's unfortunately the case with many Internet communities

@ManishEarth yeah i noticed, but its different on SE, i dont know why

@RhysW different? as in?

Anonymous
@Gugg F1 strings are. There are D2 branes etc. though. In BFSS, there's only M2 branes and M5 branes .

I would want to post this againe:

@David Zaslavasky: This suggested edit: http://physics.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/21181 came from the OP's own comments on annav's answer. How does that change too much ? .

@RhysW "2 seconds ill explain in a minute" lol

Hah..! Rhys would be getting tensed now... :)

c'ya later... :)

@ManishEarth yeah though it seems i missed you :P

@Dimension10 get yourself some more rep -> problem solved ;-). As I had not yet 2000rep I completely stopped editing posts at some point, exactly because of such and similar things ...

Q: Retagging and suggesting edits

drakeWhy when someone retags a question (and also when he or she suggests an edit, I think) that question becomes the first in the list of 'active' questions??? This is very inconvenient — I hate it — because it puts back questions that are really active (with new answers, for example). Retagging doe...

Who here understands the holographic principle?

@Gugg the what now?

Yes, now. Please. :)

i dont know what it is :(

In theoretical physics, the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence, sometimes called Maldacena duality or gauge/gravity duality, is a conjectured relationship between two kinds of physical theories. On one side of the correspondence are certain quantum field theories, including theories similar to the Yang–Mills theories that describe elementary particles. On the other side of the correspondence are theories of quantum gravity, formulated in terms of string theory or M-theory. The duality represents a major advance in our understanding of string theory and quantum gravity. ...
The holographic principle is a property of quantum gravity and string theories that states that the description of a volume of space can be thought of as encoded on a boundary to the region—preferably a light-like boundary like a gravitational horizon. First proposed by Gerard 't Hooft, it was given a precise string-theory interpretation by Leonard Susskind who combined his ideas with previous ones of 't Hooft and Charles Thorn. As pointed out by Raphael Bousso, Thorn observed in 1978 that string theory admits a lower-dimensional description in which gravity emerges from it in what would...

@ManishEarth But do you also understand it?

7:05 PM
nopes
those links were for @RhysW's benefit

ahh im being pinged by mods, it wasnt me i didnt do it i swear!

@ManishEarth Ah, I'll wait for him then.

oh, um. nothing
you might be waiting for a few, im at work about to do a deployment
@ManishEarth i was gonna talk to you but i dont think it matters now xD so never mind :P

was about what we were tlaking about earleir
(ignore my spelling, speed typing)

7:29 PM
there we go all done,
now what was i reading? :L

Holographics. Come on, I haven't got all night.

:P ok i read the wiki link, seems interesting

OK, I didn't, Question: Why can't it be used more than once, e.g., twice? Is it because the horizon isn't really part of the universe. Something like that?
(And, by the way, the hamster was running backwards.)

8:21 PM
@CrazyBuddy You seem to know a lot about strings, right?

8:39 PM
@Gugg Yeah... But, I'm quite selfish & jealous. I don't speak much..!!! ;-)
Teaching others is an abomination.... :D

Q: Does the Banach-Tarski paradox contradict our understanding of nature?

bitmaskSince the Banach-Tarski paradox makes a statement about domains defined in terms of real numbers, it would appear to invalidate statements about nature that we derived by applying real analysis. My reasoning is this: If you can "duplicate" an abstract 3-dimensional ball defined, in the usual way...

Is that off topic?
@Dimension10 that edit comes from your interpretation of the OP's comments, but goes beyond what can unambiguously be determined from the comments themselves.
Besides, the OP hasn't visited the site for a year and a half. If they were still around, that might be a different matter because they would be able to review the edit in person.
