5:13 AM
Morning

5:35 AM
@PM2Ring hi, I am mental distressed from so many days can you help.

@yuvrajsingh Maybe.

Let me explain you the whole situation.

Ok

I ran into some dacoits on the trip back to my village and came pretty close to not being here.
This particular incident just stuck in mind that I am not able to overcome by this.
@PM2Ring

@yuvrajsingh Oh dear. That is bad. At least you are safe now. Did they rob you?

5:48 AM
No any how, I just escape from there.

For readers not familiar with the term dacoit, please see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dacoity

Now I am so scared that In night I couldn't, t get sleep, not able to concentrate on my studies.

@yuvrajsingh Did they hit you, or just chase you?

Actually it was very long when I was just arrived at the station and searching for auto to my village which is around 30km.
I was talking to @JohnRennie at that time, it was rennie who help me to come out from that particular situation.

FWIW, I have been chased, attacked, and robbed a few times. So I kind of know what you're going through. Although of course Australia is a different environment to India.

5:52 AM
Hi Yuvraj. It's still causing you problems then?
Did the meeting go OK?

@JohnRennie are you here, can you explain @PM2Ring about that night.
@JohnRennie yes, I answered two questions.

@yuvrajsingh good :-)

Which I discussed with you, about QM,.

So you're managing to cope with the college work even though the PTSD is still causing you problems.

@JohnRennie really, it now just pinching me from inside,.

5:54 AM
@yuvrajsingh My suggestion is to spend time with friends & family members, people who you feel safe with. The bad feelings will gradually become less. These things take time.

@JohnRennie it s, request if you can explain the my whole situation and story, in short to @PM2Ring. It would better, and they

How long ago did this happen? I thought you meant it happened in the last few days. But I guess it may have been further in the past.

@PM2Ring it was while Yuvraj was headed home for the Diwali holiday
Weekend before last, so about ten days ago.
The taxi drive attempted to rob him on the drive back to his village.

Ok, so still fairly recent.

Yes. What Yuvraj describes is straight out of any number of articles about post traumatic stress.
But knowing what it is doesn't make it easier to live with.

6:00 AM
Indeed! I know that from my own experiences.

@yuvrajsingh you're doing amazingly well to cope with the demands of the college work. I doubt I could do any better in your place.

Now for me it become very difficult to trust someone easily.

@yuvrajsingh that's entirely natural under the circumstances. If you concentrate on the day by day task of getting through your work the bad feelings will get better. It just takes time.

Yes, you what happened in meeting today.

How did the meeting go? Was it interesting?

6:04 AM
So @yuvrajsingh you are back at college, so you can't spend time with family. But you should try to spend as much time as you can with college friends, or at least in social environments where you are safe. I know you probably want to spend time alone, but that doesn't make the bad feelings go away. It can make them stronger, and last longer.

True. @PM2Ring.
But I am scared and hesitate to talk someone, and getting a new friend.
@JohnRennie very interesting.
Actually as you told me yesterday to sit in middle yes.

Yes. Did it work :-)

Actually, one of the professor, I do not know, pointed out me and said hey, long hair, come in front.

"long hair"!! :-)

My hair,are not long enough, but look like they are very long.

6:10 AM
Is there a college counsellor you can talk to?

There is a counselor in college but he is not so good in his job.

At least let him know what you're going through.

When I entered the college first thing I have done is to talk to him.

Ok. That's good.

But conversation, was not beneficial enough
@PM2Ring have you faced thus kind of situation ever,
Like I go through, can you share . you experience @PM2Ring

6:15 AM
I understand. A conversation won't fix things like magic. But conversations do help. As I said before, these things take time.

Can you share your experience, as you said you go through this.
@PM2Ring

@yuvrajsingh I'd rather not go into details, and the incidents I mentioned before happened many years ago. But I guess I can tell you about one incident...

Ine time I was walking along the street in a rough part of town. I didn't think I was in danger because it was still daylight, late afternoon. And the road was fairly busy.

Wow;...

6:23 AM
But when I walked past 2 guys, they gave me evil looks and tried to chase me. And I think they tried to grab my wallet from my back pocket.

OK.
So you warn them, or talk to some policemen around.

Anyway, they almost got me a couple of times, but they were big guys, and I was smaller & more agile. But eventually I ran out of places to escape to. This all happened within a minute or so.

So in desperation I ran out into the middle of the road, which had a fair bit of traffic, so I had to dodge cars.

Wow.... Then

6:28 AM
One of those cars was a taxi. The driver saw I was being chased. He stopped & told me to get in. And drove up the hill, and dropped me off about 250 metres away from where he picked me up. He didn't want any money.

Good,.... Then
Did they reached there.

So it was great to be rescued. But it took me a while before I felt safe walking around by myself. Especially in that part of town. In fact, over 30 years later, I still have no desire to visit that exact part of Sydney. ;)
@yuvrajsingh I don't know what happened to the bad guys. But it would have been impossible for them to know where the taxi dropped me off.

I was surprised that no one on the road look at you, my incident happened in night, next day I inveraitigate about the robbers. And got the proof against them.
Because there was robbery at my house, before this incident. Around 10 days ago. @PM2Ring

I was a bit surprised myself. But as I said, it's a rough district, so it's not that unusual to see bad stuff on the street, although the bad stuff mostly happens at night. Most of the drivers were stuck in traffic, driving home from work, not wanting to get involved in stranger's troubles.
If people see trouble on the street, they tend to ignore it. They don't want to get dragged into the trouble. They assume it's just criminals fighting with each other.
It probably wouldn't happen these days. The busy parts of the city have lots of surveillance cameras

Yes, but here in India if you are beating someone then, other who have frustration also beat that guy.

6:41 AM
Such cameras don't stop crime, but they do reduce it a lot, especially during daylight hours.

@PM2Ring when the next day when I go the incident site.
The three robbers were talking about me.
That, chap was easy target how can we missed it.
@PM2Ring
These words like a Thunderclap to me.

@yuvrajsingh You were a harder target than they thought. :)

Yes, but u informed the police next day with proof and they were arrested.
I got the certificate if appreciation too.

6:56 AM
That's great! Will they go to prison?

Yes.

That's good to know.

But now I am scared, I get sacred in night with a sound of pin too.
@PM2Ring

Yes, I understand. But that won't last forever. And you need to mix with people in a safe environment to make it go away quicker. It won't ever go away completely, but it will fade.
Do you have many friends at college?
Maybe there are some clubs or societies that you can join, where you can socialize in a safe place.

Yes, sir many since exam are going currently so everyone here just studying.
I already join photography club.
But that is also close till the semester exam will over.

7:04 AM
Ah, right. I guess that means people are mostly studying by themselves. Although some people like to study together in small groups.

That, s the reason I am scared mire.

Well, you can always come to this chat and talk with friendly people here. :) I know it's not the same as socializing in person, but it's better than nothing.

Thanks, and sorry to waste your time in stupid talk.

@yuvrajsingh Please do not apologise! You haven't wasted my time. I wish I could do more to help you.

7:20 AM
Are you in Sydney.
Or any other town near Sydney.

Yes, I'm in Sydney. Not far from the main airport. So I have to put up with the noise of planes going overhead.

Oh. Have you seen a kangaroo

I've lived in Sydney most of my life. But from 2010 to 2017 I lived outside Coffs Harbour, near a town named Woolgoolga. There is a big Sikh community in Woolgoolga, and the first Indian temple in Australua is there.

Oh wow.

@yuvrajsingh Of course. I spoke about that in chat a day or so ago. Let me find a link...
See the conversation starting around here:
17 hours ago, by PM 2Ring
I've lived in Sydney most of my life, but from 2010 to 2017 I lived outside Coffs Harbour. We'd sometimes get kangaroos in our yard in the early morning, grazing on the lawn. And in the nearby town of Woolgoolga, it was common to see kangaroos on the football field, and other green areas. It wasn't unusual to see one hop across the road.

7:26 AM
Do you have any pic of them in your yard.
@PM2Ring

On the road near that house there were signs to warn drivers that kangaroos are in the area. You have to be careful, because kangaroos don't really understand traffic. They can jump onto the road very suddenly. And at night time, if a kangaroo sees the car headlights it gets kind of hypnotized, and just stares at the lights, not moving.

Lol.

@yuvrajsingh No, I don't. I did try to take a few photos of kangaroos near my house, and around Woolgoolga, but it was with my old phone, which had a bad camera. It's hard to get close enough for a good photo. Kangaroos are very timid, and they get frightened if you get too close. And when they're frightened they hop away. But I think I can find a photo or two online of some Woolgoolga kangaroos...

Sure.

Here are some at the local golf course.

7:37 AM
I think kangaroos are very sensitive animals. As we can see in the pic too

I love watching kangaroos. They don't mind, as long as you don't get too close. They are even more cautious if they have a baby.

Yes there is special cat found in Meghalya and arunachal.
Let me find pic.
Fishing cat and red panda. @PM2Ring

1 hour later…
8:50 AM
So far so good
it is surprisingly short
the pages don't contain a lot of text

Well, if preferred frame does exists in the form of clumps of dark matter
that will potentially revolutionise spacetime travel
But then
I cannot really wrap around the coexistence of a preferred frame over everything else that is relative
how will the speed of light behave in such weird spacetimes

3 hours later…
11:29 AM
I'm writing a question, but I'm not sure whether to post it to physics.SE or chemistry.SE; could you take a look and give opinions please?

> Consider the following situation: We have a pot of strong brine (for concreteness let's say 30g of NaCl per 100ml of water) and heat it to a boil. How will the salt content affect the resulting steam, in comparison with pure water? I.e. what temperature and which ratio of droplets to water vapor will the steam above the pot have?

11:46 AM
@caconyrn That sounds like a physics question to me. But be careful how you word it. You have to make it clear that you're asking a conceptual question, and not asking people to do a calculation. Otherwise, it's likely to get closed under the homework-like policy.

Ok thanks, that is indeed what I had in mind. Do you think "(Note: Whilst I stated it as a concrete example for clarity, general(izable) explanations would be preferred)" is clear enough?

"general(izable) explanations are desired. I am not asking you to calculate the ratio." Or something like that.
But maybe wait for some more feedback in here.
Even asking "What equation(s) do I need to solve this?" goes against the homework policy. But I think you can ask "How do I figure out the relevant equation?"

1 hour later…
1:15 PM
It’s not often that I come across an interesting physics question when reading the morning paper: google.com/amp/s/www.wired.com/story/…

I still need to buy that laser to do interferometry with
But I'm not sure I have "laser" spending money
Lasers are pretty low on the hierarchy of needs

Basically, they were able to use a laser to make microphones on iPhones/androids/etc think they were hearing sound

Pretty sure you can get a low-quality second-hand laser from AliBaba pretty cheap!

And it’s apparently not obvious what the physical mechanism is

@Ezze Who wants a low-quality laser for interferometry
@Semiclassical Science

1:20 PM
At some level it’s not surprising, though/ a microphone is designed to convert certain external perturbations into electronic signald
So evidently they’re sensitive to lasers too

Well I broke 20k close reviews today. Then I ran out of close votes & promptly found 4 more questions that need closing :(

1:55 PM
If neural networks are very good at specific tasks (such as chess, but nothing more), why don't we make a neural network that is good at spotting and creating neural networks for different things and then combining them?
I believe if we are going to build general AI, the system needs to have some sort of reward and punishment system in order for it to learn what to do.

@NovaliumCompany It's hard
Remember this for any science question you may have

@KyleKanos I thought I noticed an increase in the number of poor-quality questions that needed closing. Now I know why.

2:34 PM
@NovaliumCompany If you think like that, then you seriously don't know neural networks... Neural Nets are very flexible.
I've ordered mine on Amazon

How do you get into a PhD in theoretical physics? I am in my final year. Should I start contacting potential supervisors everywhere and sending them a CV, or how does that work?

in the US, you usually just apply to the university and after being accepted, you look for the advisor
Well, after acceptance and starting there

In Europe, yes, you message ppl around

After my first semester, I walked up to the professor and asked if he'd take me on (to which we then had a subsequent meeting to discuss research, timing, etc)

Since PhD in Europe is not necessarily related to any academic activities

2:52 PM
@Ezze what do you mean that in Europe a PhD is not necessarily related to any academic activities

physics.stackexchange.com/posts/512126/revisions Can I get some other opinions on this? To me, that looks like a whole new question, and should be rolled back, but I see some relevance to OP's original question, so I'm not sure if the rollback is fair or not.

@JMac Should be rolled back

@JMac I'd say so long as there are no answers, large edits like that are okay.
Certainly would have been easier for OP to posted that as a new question, however

@KyleKanos In my opinion, the original author and his opinions should be equally respected, shouldn't it?

@KyleKanos I agree it would have been easier/better for them to post a new question. At the same time, they managed to get 3 Reopen votes on this edit, and as you mention, there are no answers. Given that it seems to be an edit in good faith from OP to try to figure out some specific physics concept, I'm going to leave it.
@AbhasKumarSinha The original author made the substantial edit, then Qmechanic just added another tag.

3:06 PM
@JMac ah okay

Hi, can someone briefly explain me what a PhD in theoretical physics consists of? I am in my last year and would like to develop a career in teaching & research. Should I know what specific area I would like to do research? I just know I would love to do teaching and research in theoretical physics

@DanielDuque I hope you like bibliographical research

@DanielDuque Do BE then M Tech then PhD, that's how I'll go to theoretical physics, by engineering

Try to find a good compromise between the specific area you are interested in and areas which are actually being funded I guess?
Hopefully your area of interest is solid state physics!

I a in my last year MPhys (UK), and would like to go probably to US and do a PhD. I am from south america, are PhDs funded?

3:12 PM
If it's quantum gravity might be harder
@DanielDuque Can't speak for the US I'm afraid
"All the low-hanging fruit has already been picked. For example, element 117 was discovered by an international collaboration who got an unstable isotope of berkelium from the single accelerator in Tennessee capable of synthesizing it, shipped it to a nuclear reactor in Russia where it was attached to a titanium film, brought it to a particle accelerator in a different Russian city where it was bombarded with a custom-made exotic isotope of calcium, sent the resulting data to a global team of theorists, and eventually found a signature indicating that element 117 had existed for a few milli

@DanielDuque depends on what you mean by "theoretical ". My research was computationally based & was largely regarded as theoretical
But I had some classmates who were doing QG and would regard my work as not theoretical

@Slereah this is more interesting
Robert Scott Lazar (/ləˈzɑːr/; born January 26, 1959) is an American who is primarily known for his claims of having been hired in the late 1980s to reverse-engineer purported extraterrestrial technology at a secret site called "S-4", allegedly located several kilometres south of the United States Air Force facility popularly known as Area 51.

Lazar claims he examined an alien craft that ran on an antimatter reactor powered by element 115, which at the time had not yet been synthesized.

Lazar is a scam artist

@KyleKanos ...?

I want someone to make element 128

3:26 PM
@Secret extraterrestrials... XD LOL
@Secret hello secret

hi
had been busy thus have not been active

@Secret hmmm.... i see
@Secret what were you doin'?

PhD, thesis stuff and crawling through the data

"Typing “nerd” into Google Scholar brings up only a series of papers on desert plants by one Dr. A. Nerd, who must have had a very unpleasant childhood."

as well some huge philosophy reading

3:28 PM
@Secret ah okay
@Secret ...? tell us your secret.

omnipotence, mereology, descartes theory of doubt, nothingness, infinity, time, quantum interpretations, foundations of mathematics, self references etc.

@Secret WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW that's a lot of work, you must be tired!
Hey anyone here, just use google translator to convert "she has been to england" from english to hindi and then convert that hindi back to english... That's very weird AI
That's google's magical AI for you.
Happened to me once, when I was dating a girl with a different language, I used google translator and the later the whole thing ended up being crap and mess! :(

@AbhasKumarSinha Why is there a different squiggle under in what I presume is "chukee" in each example? Does that change the meaning in Hindi?

@JMac they are same, google doesn't shows then properly.
@JMac chukee = has been

@AbhasKumarSinha Oh I see now, the bottom is just cut off by the latin alphabetic words below so it looks different, they're actually both the same symbol just cut off on the bottom

3:41 PM
@JMac exactly.

3:55 PM
@JMac ah, finally found the problem, typing, "She has been to England." with full stops and capital 'E' in England resolves the problem.

Weird, maybe it just assumed "england" was a typo for engaged or something.

@JMac that might be the problem...
@JMac "she has been to engaged"... Does that makes sense?

"Various people have come up with various explanations. Cognitively-minded people say that schizophrenics smoke as a maladaptive coping strategy for the anxiety caused by their condition. Pharmacologically-minded people say that schizophrenics smoke because smoking accelerates the metabolism of antipsychotic drugs and so makes their side effects go away faster.
Pragmatically-minded people say that schizophrenics smoke because they’re stuck in institutions with nothing to do all day. No points for guessing what the Freudians say."
My sides

@Slereah Are you suffering from Schizophrena?

Not so far
I'm not suffering from singularities either
Yet I read about them

4:04 PM
I am, for most purpose, completely insane, except I just happened to talk normally

@Slereah So you are doin' research on that?

Nah
just reading a blog post on the topic

@Secret So you are suffering?

Apparently it may be that schizophrenia is linked to nicotine receptors in the brain

Slereah like to study weird spacetimes and time machines

4:04 PM
@Slereah den I've something for you
@Secret yes

@AbhasKumarSinha nope, I am fine so far

@Secret ah okay...
tiz^ creepy as hell!

@DanielDuque I mean that in EU, you have already studied for 5-6 years to get your Master's degree, so most PhD programs are largely focused on research with a small amount of learning included
I even know people who don't have a single class during their PhD
So not a lot of EU institutes have 'PhD applications' in general since there is no curriculum in general
Rather, you contact a professor who works in the field you want to do research in, and they either accept you or dont

Australia is similar, we are only required to join seminars to keep our scope broad, and the rest is pure research and checking with supervisors

Yep, that is what I mean by saying PhD programs in EU are not really centered around education
Compared to the US, where a PhD program is quite similar to Master's here, with the additional focus on researc
h
But then again, you won't learn much physics there

Q: Can you please explain cut off ratio as described in Heat and Thermodynamics by Mark W Zemansky and Richard H Dittman

ACA This is what said in Heat and Thermodynamics written by Richard H Dittman and Msrk W Zemansky about cut off ratio of Diesel engine. According to Zemansky cut off ratio is $\frac{V_1}{V_2}$ But when I searched web it is found to be $\frac{V_3}{V_1}$. Is there any way I can relate both. Since thi...

Does this question really need more attention (worth 250 points)?

3 hours later…
@Slereah you like cosmology right

2 hours later…
11:58 PM
@Ezze a few of the Astro places I know have a phd application procedure. You don’t specifically know your project until after you get there.
