12:03 AM
What?

You asked, "How am I suppose to read 10, 000 pages of math books?"
These are not novels or short stories @0celoñe7

It's good you clarified that, I'm sure the mathematics student was very confused about the nature of math books.

@skullpatrol there are certain classic books in my field, and I'm supposed to read them. Even if I did nothing else but read, it would take a LONG time. I don't understand how one is supposed to do it

read them, or "read" them?

And that's not even counting the 40 classic papers my advisor wants me to read too
@heather It's a mixture of both
I'm trying to develop the skill of knowing what's parts of a book to read and what parts to "read"

12:14 AM
"Knowing is half the battle."

@skullpatrol I tried that once

Tried what? @0celoñe7

Doing SCUBA certification course work. Being a physicist helps.
All the questions are about buoyancy and pressure changes.

@DanielSank does phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=1356 not apply to physicists?

Note: the vertical axis is not labeled^

12:34 AM
i'm way too tired
i didn't realize i talked in here just ~15 minutes ago =P

Do you have a pet octopus? @DanielSank

@0celoñe7 Haha that is so accurate.
Just this morning I mentioned how doing research makes me loath basic mental math.

Aren't you suppose to be on vacation? @heather

@skullpatrol No. I'm sort of afraid of pets.
I'd mostly rather nonhuman animals be left alone in the wild.
Octopuses are particularly difficult to keep at home, and they don't live too long even with good care.

Nonhuman animals?
Do you mean nondomesticated?

12:39 AM
@0celoñe7 Sure, I suppose that's slightly more accurate.
I am generally ok with e.g. dogs.

Having a fish tank is not much work.
If you're into sea creatures.

@skullpatrol Salt tank...

Right.

Those are work.
And fragile.

Hmm, good point.

12:47 AM
You need pumps, filters, and regular maintenance.

Yeah, easier to just go out and swim with them :-)

@skullpatrol yeah, why?

You said you're tired?

@skullpatrol Correct.

a little bit, yeah @skullpatrol
oh, I saw something interesting about octopi in a optics book today @DanielSank
> Many animals can see variations in polarization just as we see variations in color. The pygmy octopus is one such creature. The varying pattern of polarized light reflected from its surface suggests it might be "communicating" with other pygmy octopuses, the way birds display color.

12:53 AM
Yeah, octopuses are pretty awesome.

@EmilioPisanty Gack! Phsssst!

yup.

To the day I (a) feel that I was right on the matter and (b) wonder if I acted correctly in my role as moderator.
I remember it, all right. But I'm not sure I would say "fondly".

a > b
(a) > (b)

good night =)

1:00 AM
Cya pal

1:14 AM
If you feel strongly enough about (a) @dmckee, then (b) doesn't matter.
Mind over matter :-)
Btw, if you have any free time during your mat leave, please consider doing an AMA.

1:37 AM
@0celoñe7 you should ask your advisor for advice on how to read all that math.

2:25 AM
@ACuriousMind ME:A is on sale, but I've only heard bad things about it :/
@ACuriousMind o.o
literally a second class citizen

Q: How much "earth" does it take to create an "earth ground" for measuring voltage?

Tony DiNittoI was contemplating the idea of a multi-meter that had a "built in" Earth ground to it, and if it did have this ability how much earth/dirt would it take to register as a true Earth ground to register voltage of 120v when touching a standard household outlet. I imagine it'd be either a) a massive...

amazing
@JohnRennie Morning

2 hours later…
user228700
5:31 AM
Hi, everyone.

Smoothie being up means it's time for me to sleep

user228700
Lol, yes. I've been up for quite some time now, actually; managed to wake at 5:45 AM today!

user228700
(On second thought, smoothie isn't that bad of a nickname)

I like it.
hi, btw

user228700
Hi :-)

5:40 AM
Morning

user228700
Hi!

5:45?

user228700
> I actually managed to wake at 5:45 AM today!

That's faaaaaaaaaaaar too early

user228700
@JohnRennie YES! :-)

5:41 AM
Unless you're a computer nerd of course

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, look who's talking!

We're exempt from the standards that apply to normal humans
That includes the dress code and diet as well :-)

user228700
Ah, I see. Well, the plan is to wake at 5:45 everyday, even on weekends. Seeing as I have been sleeping for 11 hours every night and college starts in a week, I figured that I might as well settle into this schedule starting now.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-)

Makes sense I guess, though will you really be getting up at 5:45 at college?
I'd have guessed seven a.m. was a more reasonable target ...

user228700
5:44 AM
@JohnRennie Yes, yes, one can hope!

user228700
@JohnRennie My classes in the first year are from 8:30 AM in the morning till 3:30 PM (we have breaks in b/w, of course). Second year onwards, it shifts by one hour-to the right.

11 hours every night? :O

@Kaumudi.H As I recall my undergraduate lectures started at 9 a.m. and ran until 1 p.m. then we had labs from 2 to 5 on three afternoons.

user228700
@TheRaidersofLasVegas Yep.

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, I see :-) Sounds similar to the schedule they have at IISER here.

5:47 AM
How is that even possible
You can't even read books if you sleep that much

user228700
@0celoñe7 What's ur point? :-P

user228700
Do u remember this:

user228700
Apr 15 at 5:45, by Kaumudi. H
@0celouvsky After JEE, I am sleeping for 10 days straight, that's what I'm doing.

user228700
And that is what I've been doing for the past month.

I used to sleep for longer than eight hours as a teenager. If you add in dozing as well as deep sleep I probably managed twelve hours a day during the holidays.

user228700
5:48 AM
Lol x'D

How about now? @JohnRennie

user228700
Hey, I posted that message at 5:45! (Albeit, PM).

The remaining 12 hours of the day are plenty long enough for the key tasks like watching TV and pestering Mum to make me something to eat.

user228700
^

@Kaumudi.H you could learn some math if you slept only 7 hours

5:51 AM
@TheRaidersofLasVegas I sleep about eight hours a night these days. But my schedule has shifted so I go to sleep about 9 p.m. and wake up about 5 a.m.

user228700
@0celoñe7 The goal was to rest and not to work very hard at anything at all. I think I've accomplished that quite nicely.

^
You earned it.

user228700
Haha, thanks :-)

How did you rank on the JEE?

user228700
@TheRaidersofLasVegas ::Slips quietly out:: :-P

5:52 AM
Well, I should probably sleep...

(If you don't mind me asking :-)

user228700
@0celoñe7 'Night :-)

user228700
@TheRaidersofLasVegas I didn't even write the second test, man.

What does that mean? @Kaumudi.H
Only the top x% write it?
x = ?

user228700
@TheRaidersofLasVegas Well, JEE comprises of two tests, taken with a gap of 1 month in between. I wrote the first one, did qualify to write the next but didn't because, well, that story is far too boring and morbid to relate here.

user228700
5:55 AM
@TheRaidersofLasVegas Oh, there's a cutoff in marks each year.

user228700
Say, are none of you even the remotest fans of Linkin Park?

@Kaumudi.H No

user228700
:-/ I was an avid fan of theirs for about a month when I was 13.

Their voices bug me.

5:57 AM
Then you grew up :-)

user228700
No, even though I don't listen to them anymore, I do believe that some of their songs are pretty good.

The nu metal scene always felt a bit puerile to me.
Having grown up in the Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple era then moved on to NWOBHM.

user228700
Right. Well, Linkin Park was one of the first bands of which I became an avid fan.

Well you were 13 - that's about Linkin Park's target demographic :-)

user228700
And now, having listened to Numb a few times this morning after hearing the news, I've got it stuck in my head.

6:01 AM
Isn't there a cartoon with a similar name?

News? Google, Google, ah ...

user228700
@JohnRennie It is literally the first piece of information that greeted me this morning.

user228700
@TheRaidersofLasVegas No idea.

I've been avoiding the news media recently because the state of British politics is so bad I don't want to hear anything about it. That means I miss non-political news as well.

user228700
Oh, wow, I see.

user228700
6:03 AM
This morning, I also found out that rubbing cinnamon on your face will make it burn like hell.

It's not bad as in corrupt - more fundamentally incompetent.
@Kaumudi.H Cinammon?

user228700
@JohnRennie I don't think I'm capable of conversing with you about this; I don't read the news either but that is because I'm quite lazy.

Cinammon oil?

user228700
@JohnRennie Yes. I powdered it using a mixer and mixed it with some honey to make a paste for my acne ridden face. Suffice it to say that I stifled my scream as best I could when I left it on for about 5 seconds.

Try a mixture of raw garlic and chilli instead :-)

6:07 AM
South Park <---that's it :-P

user228700
Lol.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-( It really did hurt. "Heal acne/scars" is on my to-do list, you see.

There isn't a lot you can put on skin that will improve it. Skin has evolved to be pretty good at protecting itself.
(I speak as one who worked in the skin care group at Unilever Research)
Petroleum jelly (vaseline) is about the only thing that helps significantly, and all it does it protect the skin from external irritants.

user228700
:-/ Well, I looked it up and it seems that steaming your face does help for reasons including-but not limited to-opening up the pores, whin in turn flushes out the toxins. Or...something.

Acutane is extremely potent.

6:12 AM
You'll find all sorts of crap about skin care on the Internet, mainly because multinationals make a fortune selling skin care products and it's in their interests to foment such stories. And, yes, Unilever is one of those multinationals.

user228700
No, I only looked up homemade "recipes".

Which might make you wonder why I was willing to work there for twelve years. Well it turns out that selling your soul isn't so bad if you get a good price for it :-)

user228700
:-)

If you think that the homemade recipes are uninfluenced by the multinationals then I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment. Bear in mind some of these companies have been at it for a century. That's lots of time to influence popular culture.

user228700
Hmm, I...see.

6:20 AM
I'm not sure acne is really understood even today. It certainly wasn't when I was working at Unilever. Why some people are so badly affected while others aren't remains a mystery. My brother and I were among the lucky ones.

user228700
And I'm not :'-( It sucks.

Bad acne is so horrible that people desperately want there to be a cure so they grasp at straws. That's why there are so many apocryphal cures around.

I read somewhere that having acnes is a good indication of something.

But I don't think there are any reliable cures. TRLV mentioned acutane, but that's a serious drug with dangerous side effects, and even it isn't a reliable cure.

user228700
@Yashas Well, the scientists (aunties) around these parts insist that a pimple is the sign that someone is thinking of you x'D

6:23 AM
...

user228700
I only mean to call attention to just how scientific and driven by data some Indians are :-P

That happens in every country I guess

user228700
We are known to be especially superstitious but yes, I guess.

lot of pseudo scientists

Hypothesis: cinnamon cures acne
Method: apply cinnamon to skin
Results: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

user228700
6:24 AM
:-P It was painful OK? Quit making fun of it!

Conclusions: don't apply cinnamon to skin :-)

user228700
@Yashas Oh, no, I didn't mean pseudo scientists; I was using the term scientist to refer to aunties to be sarcastic.

user228700
@JohnRennie Seriously. Please don't. Well, unless you are craving for that sort of burning pain.

@Kaumudi.H Sorry :-( Anyhow I need to work for half an hour or so.

user228700
:-) Wokay, toodles!

6:27 AM
I wonder if cinnamon is a terpene. Most terpenes are pretty nasty in concentrated form.

Minister-led panel on cow urine to meet
@JohnRennie I think so. I remember studying about cinnamic acid, cinnamaldehyde, etc. I am not sure if these compounds are found in cinnamon.
let me check
I know a double bond is found after dehydration step
:|
it has been just two months and I have already forgotten a lot :/
idk if the presence of a terpene structure in a molecule makes it a terpene
ugh I am completely wrong :D

6:47 AM
Wow, I have two servers with failed disks this morning. Oh well, it makes for some excitement I suppose :-)

6:59 AM
@Yashas ah, it has lots of terpenes in it then. But then pretty much everything that is spicy or smelly has terpenes in.

Sid
7:16 AM
@Kaumudi.H .... what?
Hehe, one of our "reputed" journalist did an AMA in Reddit.
I leave it to your imaginations as to how it went.(Spoiler-He got toasted big time)
(It was two months ago, btw)

user228700
Ah, you mean Arnab Goswami.

user228700
@Sid Wut?

Sid
Still in shock of your scientists conclusions from pimples

user228700
My scientist?

user228700
None of my own aunts (to their credit) have ever spewed such nonsense but I have heard it from others.

Yeah, well in India, Friend's aunt= My aunt. :P

@Yashas I don't think they count minutes. Who does that? :P

@Blue approx

user228700
@Yashas What does it matter? It's a dermatologist. If it were a therapist or something, then it would be a different case entirely.

Anonymous
Approx each person here is taking 5-10 minutes. At present around 30 people are in front of me in the waiting list.

7:59 AM
I wanted to calculate $ per minute
200 rs per minute? :O

This doc is probably a millionaire :'D

Hospital takes a cut
30 people * 2000 = 60,000 per day!
18 lakhs per month
that is enuf to pay for my UG + PG college fees :O

user228700
@Yashas And you should be so lucky! My friend studies at VIT and her total fees for UG is 16 Lakhs :-o

Sid
@Yashas They still have to pay the staff..

@JohnRennie How was your first day in Cambridge, if you remember? (Peterhouse, wasn't it?)

I know a lot of shit that happens at NITK becaz my mom was there

8:19 AM
Do you visit Cambridge from time to time ? @JohnRennie

@Sid I spent most of the first day finding it hard to believe I was actually there!

Anonymous
@JohnRennie "hard to believe"...why?

@Blue I've been back occasionally, but the most important part of being there was all the friends I made and of course they are no longer there. These days it's just a town with a university that I once went to.

Sid
@JohnRennie How long ago was it? 40 years?

@Sid I started my undergraduate degree in 1980 and finished my PhD in 1986.

8:23 AM
o0
@JohnRennie did u get a masters degree?

Sid
@JohnRennie Clearly you are quite smart(If that was not common knowledge already)

@Sid Lots of people have PhDs :-)

Sid
That quick? I would say not many. :-)

@Yashas For the science courses at Cambridge the masters degree doesn't really exist. I do have a masters, but I think PhD students got it automatically if you survived the first year.
I don't remember anyone enrolling to do a masters.
It might be different for other departments like the business school

Anonymous
@JohnRennie umm...you could keep in touch with them on Facebook or something ? (I know that's difficult though...i don't have contact with most of my school friends even :p)

8:26 AM
@Blue Yes, I'm still in touch with lots of my friends from university days, and yes it is mostly through Facebook :-)
We used to get together once a year to go on a walking holiday, but as people got older and started families that tailed off.

Hehe..that's nice! We should be thankful to Zuckerberg :)

@JohnRennie I get it :/

@JohnRennie if you're referring to the MA, it's slightly different now in that there's also an MSci, which a lot of people do (I didn't) as well as the usual BA-MA thing

@Mithrandir24601 ah, yes, I did mean the MA. I didn't know there was now a separate master of science course.

Anonymous
8:31 AM
I plan to take up a masters before commiting to a PhD. Apparently it takes a lot of will power and persistence to get through a PhD!

Anonymous
It's good that most good universities are starting to have master's courses

@JohnRennie yeah, there's now the MSci and a MASt (advanced studies, which is pretty much a conversion Masters like an MPhil)

@Blue the PhD was all I ever wanted to do, and I loved every moment of it. If you really want to be a scientist then I don't think doing a PhD will be that hard.

@Blue I'm nearly finished my first year now and loving it so far! :D

If you just want the letters after your name then I agree that years of hard work and no money are likely to be difficult.
The thing about the PhD is that for the first time it's your research.
You're not just doing someone else's course work any more.

Anonymous
8:37 AM
@JohnRennie I actually have some entrepreneurial ambitions (related to science and technology) and plan to self teach myself whatever physics and other sciences I need on the way. I don't really want a PhD just for a title's sake. But I don't know. I might change my mind some day. As for now, I want to learn whatever comes my way. :)

@Blue in that case I suspect you might find doing a PhD slow and frustrating ...

Why didn't you continue with your research after you received your degree?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Maybe...that's why enrolling in a master's course would be more helpful and give me sufficient time to decide my career path :)

@TheRaidersofLasVegas At that time there was a shortage of jobs in academia. Lots of people ended up with ten years of short term postdoc contracts behind them and still no secure job. I sold my soul to industry instead. Less rewarding but more money!

Sid
8:42 AM
@JohnRennie Isn't there shortage of jobs all the time in academia?

@Sid these days yes. Back in the day (60s and 70s) you could be pretty much guaranteed of a job in academia if you were willing to work for it.

If you're in it for the money @Blue go for a Masters of Business Administration.

Sid
That is also why you see a lot of people in industry/services sector rather than in academia.

Anonymous
@TheRaidersofLasVegas I'm not really in for money. I want to have a more direct impact on people's life and improve the condition of science and research in my country. Most people here are scared to take up pure science in our country for the lack of money. I want to change that and make science an exciting career option.

Become the Tyson of India :P

@Blue Heh, all you have to do is go to Delhi and raise some slogans. The media will be running to cover you in Prime Time.

Politics after science is good I think. I strongly believe that the future voters will be voting for scientists because they are tired of...
Elon Musk should run for president!

@Yashas I'd definitely support that

@Yashas The doctor took only 1 minute to check me and another 1 minute to write a prescription. Rs. 1000/min :P

How long did you wait?

Maybe 2..not sure

Not too bad.

APL is a pretty strange language
Here's an APL function : fib ← {⊃(+/,⊃)⍣⍵⊢1}

One of many write-only languages ...

I'm trying to parse it but it's not very easy
⍣ doesn't seem defined in the manual and the way ⊢ works here doesn't seem to match the documentation

Greek philosophers loved one point compactification

@Slereah Do you want to get active on Programming Puzzles & Code Golf, or why are you looking at APL? :P

@ACuriousMind Bored in class
So I'm doing things

Consider two particles $\lvert A \rangle$ and $\lvert B\rangle$. Upon "collision"(scattering(?)), the resulting states are $\lvert A_i'\rangle$ and $\lvert B_i'\rangle$, where $i$ is some number taken from a probability distribution $i=P(j)$. We suspect that the dynamics of this system will be modelled by mixed states, and the interaction operator $U(0,t;i)$ is inherently probabilistic. To be checked...
(NB not assuming QFT here, cause I still know nothing about it)

@Secret Please, if you want to communicate to other people, start using standard notation and defining your notation when you don't. Why are there primes on the states after collision? $\lvert A_i\rangle$ would already have been sufficiently different from $\lvert A\rangle$.

What does $i = P(j)$ mean? What is $j$? If you mean to say that $i$ is drawn from a probability distribution $P$, then you just say that it follows $P(i)$, what is the $j$ doing there? What does "dynamics will be modelled by mixed states" mean? Is "the interaction operator" supposed to be the time evolution that leads to the states labelled by $i$?

I was not aware that $A_i$ is different from $A$ as symbols that has subscripts usually mean it is a component of the thing in question. Anything else I will clarify after I get back home to my computer

@Secret Well, subscripts mean components when it makes sense that they are components. Since you didn't decare $A$ to be a vector or anything, that wouldn't have made any sense at all.

Ah ok, so I guess I don't need to use primes to denote the final states are different from the initial states and the subscript i will suffice

@Secret You see, there's no general principle that you have to denote things after a collision with primes. It's just often done because people are too lazy to think about new symbols, so they use $p,q$, etc. for the things before and $p',q'$, etc. for the things after collision. I've noted a tendency in your posts where you keep adding superfluous primes to "results" of some interaction (I recall e.g. one $A''''$), it's unnecessary and just clutters your notation in the eyes of others.

I need to add the requirement that the random particles created have the barycenter at the middle of the screen I think
Otherwise it gets shit

10:30 AM
Ah I see, now I understood the story behind it. I think I should be able to use better notations from now on

@0celoñe7 For the Kriele theorem on Lipschitz continuous causal curve, is this more general than simply piecewise continuous causal curves
Are there any Lipschitz continuous causal curve that isn't piecewise $C^1$ causal
