@Saavestro Welcome. Are you a physics student ?

@Saavestro Most of these answer plenty of questions, but don't hang around this chat often.

Anonymous
Well, John Rennie visits the chat pretty often :P

I noticed that. :)

12:04 AM
@Blue Ok, first time I actually use the chat
@Blue Yes, I am physics student
the first one went to Jaime actually...

Anyhow, welcome to chat. :)

@Saavestro You can use the Sandbox to test chat functionalities. It's a helpful tool :)

Q: For autonomous systems why can't phase trajectories intersect each other?

Blue According to what I have learned, in an autonomous system the force acting on the particle does not depend on time. In the simplest case we can suppose that force depends only on position coordinate $q$. However, I can't understand why phase trajectory can't cut itself in such a situation (like...

Q: Could dark matter be curved pockets of spacetime left over from the big bang?

Rubellite FaeMy understanding of general relativity is that gravitation is equivalent to spacetime curvature and is proportional to localized mass. Traditionally, we conceptualize that massive things attract each other by bending spacetime. Could some mechanism in the early Universe have warped spacetime and ...

Gravitational wave memory imprints will be a support to this model if discovered

Ah, I just remembered...
You have to watch this series
Mr. Robot is an American drama–thriller television series created by Sam Esmail. It stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker who suffers from social anxiety disorder and clinical depression. Alderson is recruited by an insurrectionary anarchist known as "Mr. Robot", played by Christian Slater, to join a group of hacktivists. The group aims to erase all debts by attacking the largest conglomerate in the world, E Corp. The pilot premiered on multiple online and video on demand services on May 27, 2015, and the series was renewed for a second season before the first...

Q: Not unclear if there's an answer

heatherI have noticed the "unclear what you're asking" close reason misused multiple times (if asked, I can provide links, but I can think of many). However, there was one recent case that made me write this post. Increasing The Momentum Of A Photon has four close votes saying the question is unclear. T...

@BernardoMeurer Don't do drugs kid
Elliot was messed up

1:29 AM
@Bernardo On another matter, my parents are asking me for specific dates about that BCN trip, so that they can plan around it.

@0celo7 Non-nerds are parasites to science

@JaimeGallego I get my ticket to Rio and then to LA this week
Only then will I know

Bernardo, my friend. I have a favor to ask
Would you try out my script?

@SirCumference I might. What is it?
I would also need to check the source code

1:47 AM
@JaimeGallego It puts the timestamps on posts into regional format

@SirCumference Maybe
Make it Free Software

@Jaime, my friend

@SirCumference Get going now, it's 4 AM and I have to run errands tomorrow.

@JaimeGallego Right

Q: Regional 12-hour timestamps

Sir CumferenceThis script is a modification of Kip's "Display absolute timestamps (in local time)"; I have his permission to post this. Most of the credit for the script goes to him. About This script displays timestamps based on your timezone in 12-hour format. This is pretty convenient for anyone who doesn...

@BernardoMeurer You know your life would be 10x more convenient if you didn't restrict yourself to free software?
Most useful software aren't free

Q: Is it possible to acquire enough energy or speed to break the 3rd dimension on to a four dimensional plane?

terrariabatIs it possible to acquire enough energy or speed to "break" the 3rd dimension and travel a fourth dimensional plane. If you could do that and travel to a otherwise, impossible to access area in/outside our 3 dimensional world?

Hmm...
we always said that if macroscopic extra spatial dimensions exists, then we would have discovered them a long time ago
But what if none of our detectors and no forces except gravity can be present in those extra spatial dimensions. Then they could well, macroscopic but nevertheless remain elusive to detection?

Sigh
@Secret Would you be willing to try out my script?

So how does such scenario be ruled out? Occam's razor and Russell's teapot?

@SirCumference It works fine.

@JaimeGallego Neat. Is it useful enough?

2:12 AM
@SirCumference not sure if it can be ran on mobile, but let me try

@Secret Nah, it can't unless you have Greasemonkey

Ok nvm then

It is quite useful indeed. I would add a hovertext replacement, especially for newer posts.
(Because they only show relative minutes)

@JaimeGallego Duly noted. Also, should I remove the 12 hour format?

The 24 hour one is more international.

2:16 AM
Right. Well, it's easy to remove

Glad to be of help :)

@SirCumference I don't care for convenience
It's about what's right
Democracy is 10x more convenient if you don't bother to go vote

@BernardoMeurer Those are on different scales

Software is everything
I don't see how the scale is different

Firstly, software is made to be useful
If it does its job, what's the big deal?

2:21 AM
Find me a democracy with more people than Windows users
@SirCumference Are you seriously saying that?
"The means justify the end"

@BernardoMeurer halp

@BernardoMeurer Did you mean to write it that way?

one of the feet of my keyboard is missing
and they might have alarmed the house so I can't go look in my car

@SirCumference I'm saying that is what you're stating by "If it does its job, what's the big deal?"
@0celo7 Eh

@BernardoMeurer Then it should be "the ends justify the means"

2:24 AM

@SirCumference It's 3 AM, I'm being stupid
We'll continue this another time

@BernardoMeurer Also Steam is stuck in "connecting steam account"
I closed it and now it's doing that thing where it doesn't open again

@BernardoMeurer what's the best adblock?

2:44 AM
@BernardoMeurer You'll need extremely large hands to play the third and fourth chords, and rather a lot of fingers to play the first one.

@SirCumference If you're actually confused about why people might say otherwise, ponder this: how useful is a piece of software which does its job but stops doing its job tomorrow? (among other points)

@DavidZ It's useful to me now
I'll complain when it stops

That's OK if it finishes its job today.

@SirCumference OK well, you keep complaining, meanwhile the rest of us who are using different kinds of programs will keep working
Actually looking back I may have missed some context about this, but nevertheless, it is something worth considering

You're assuming it'll necessarily stop working :P
More often than not, you'll be fine

2:47 AM
@SirCumference No, you're assuming it won't

@JohnRennie I kept expecting the glass tube to break.

@DavidZ I just think it's a bit extreme to only use free software

@SirCumference I'm not saying you're wrong to think that, just trying to convey one of the main reasons why other people are so committed to FOSS
I mean, personally I agree with you that it's rather extreme to only use free software, and it's not a position I find practical for myself. But when using any software I always find it prudent to have an "exit strategy" to avoid having wasted effort in case I can no longer use that software.

In mathematics, sexy primes are prime numbers that differ from each other by six. For example, the numbers 5 and 11 are both sexy primes, because they differ by 6. If p + 2 or p + 4 (where p is the lower prime) is also prime, then the sexy prime is part of a prime triplet. The term "sexy prime" stems from the Latin word for six: sex. == n# notation == As used in this article, n# stands for the product 2 · 3 · 5 · 7 · … of all the primes ≤ n. == Types of groupings == === Sexy prime pairs === The sexy primes (sequences  A023201 and  A046117 in OEIS) below 500 are: (5,11), (7,13), (11,1...

4:27 AM
I prefer the anonymity of the chat room.
But it was in a good cause, i.e. attempting to get Ryan's PC working, which we did! :-)
@0celo7 with it being 5 a.m. and the language difference it took me a while to get that. I'm guessing it means you've filled up with petrol at a BP garage :-)

@JohnRennie dw, I'm not going to out you

@0celo7 I use uBlock Origin
@0celo7 :-)

@JohnRennie I got a different CPU temp program
"Core Temp", Bernardo recommended it
it's giving far more reasonable numbers
@JohnRennie indeed

@0celo7 This app? I'll have a look.

@JohnRennie does the stack uploader not like .png either?

4:36 AM
I don't think I've ever tried .png though I think someone said last night that pngs sometimes give problems.

Success!
This game is putting my GPU to work
70-80% usage, temps around 70C.
Completely maxed out settings. Even have AA for the hair on :)

I've got both Core Temp and HWMonitor running and both display similar temperatures. However I notice Core Temp refreshes less frequently so I'd guess it's averaging to remove noise.
Anyhow, are the CPU temperatures staying sane?

user228700
@JohnRennie Thank you!! :-)

@JohnRennie Yes

user228700
4:43 AM
Done at last. PHEW.

I can't get HWMonitor to open for some reason

@0celo7 That is truly amazing graphics quality. I just can't believe how good the graphics in modern games are.
@Kaumudi.H when do you start there?

user228700
Next month, I hope.

@Kaumudi.H congrats, that seems soon though

UK universities tend to start at the beginning of September

4:45 AM
@JohnRennie what is the exact name of the hwmonitor program?

user228700
I've gots to go to the college sometime in the next 10 days to submit my documents for verification though. And also to book a room in the hostel etc.

Do you mean the exe file?

yeah
I can't find it

user228700
@0celo7 Thanks :-) Ah, most colleges start in August here...

"C:\Program Files\CPUID\HWMonitor\HWMonitor.exe"

4:45 AM
@me strange!
@JohnRennie Core Temp and HWMonitor disagree by 21C.

user228700
@JohnRennie Dad says we can have pizza for dinner to celebrate! :-)

Wow. HWMonitor obviously doesn't like something about your system. Oh well.
@Kaumudi.H PIZZA!!

user228700
@JohnRennie And butterscotch mousse!

I'm going to have those cream doughnuts I mentioned yesterday

4:49 AM
The 40C seems rather low, doesn't it?
Or does water cooling do a really good job?

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, nice :-)

@0celo7 It looks as if your mobo has a range of temperature sensors - 5 of them. I'd guess CPUTIN is the CPU. I'd guess CoreTemp is picking up only the last of the 5 i.e. TMPIN3.
If so CoreTemp is giving you a misleading figure.

why 4 core is overclocked but not the other?

@JohnRennie well what is the package temperature then?
on HWMonitor

@0celo7 But if you're running all six cores at around 60% CPU and only getting temperatures of 50-60C then you're laughing.

4:54 AM
@JohnRennie right but I'm getting that while idle

@0celo7 good point, that's probably the CPU temp.
@0celo7 huh? Using 60% CPU at idle?
What does Task Manager show for the CPU?

@JohnRennie no, the temperature
I'm turning off the game now
It's now at 2%

That's on my laptop at idle. 50C seems to be a fairly normal temperature.

@JohnRennie it's doing that thing again
it goes down to 47, then spikes to 58, repeat

Temperature jumping around?
Just average the readings. It may be picking up electrical noise from the mobo.

4:58 AM
it seems to be settling at 47 now
GPU is down to 50

That's on my laptop with the CPUs maxed out.

Ok, how do I max it out?

Download and run EatCPU.exe
NB there's a bug that the first time you run it it appears as a tiny window. You'll need to resize it.

@JohnRennie I'm downloading stuff
will this interrupt that?
"Windows Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
More info"

It's an unrecognised app because I wrote it myself.
It's perfectly safe.
But I would go to bed and let the downloads finish sfaely.
Try it tomorrow morning when the PC is idle.

5:07 AM
go to bed?

It must be about bed time where you are?

I don't have responsibilities until 1 tomorrow

:-)

this internet leaves something to be desired
not very fast
@JohnRennie Ok, paused downloads. Trying your app...
What does it do?

Wait until the system is idle then choose File/Cailibrate and it does a one of speed test.
Then choose File/Go and it will max out one CPU.
Run five more copies of it, i.e. six Windows showing, and choose File/Go on all of them and it will max all six cores.

5:12 AM
calibration = 0
what?
1543900

Odd. When you choose File/Calibrate it should pause for a second or two tehn report a number around 10^6

is that good or bad?

Ah that's better.

So I need to run this six times?

That's .. pretty damn fast :-)

5:14 AM
@JohnRennie it's the magic of ramming it in incorrectly at first

On my 3GHz i7-3540M I get around 1,300,000.
Anyway now just choose File/Go and it will start maxing one CPU.

Do I have to calibrate them all?

In HWMonitor you should see the increased load and CPU temps
No, only one Calibration is needed.
Just choose File/Go now.

It seems to be maxing out at 52%

What is HWMonitor showing?

5:19 AM

Aha. It's because your CPU does Hyperthreading so it appears as a 12 core. You'll need to run twelve copies of EatCPU.
Twelves cores - Jesus! :-)

can you write it so I can just run it once

I probably ought to rewrite it some time. The app was written in about 1995.
In those days only top end servers had even two cores :-)

100%
crazy

And the CPU temps?

5:21 AM
laggy computer

@0celo7 Not surprised :-)

If the CPU temps stay sane under that load you have no problems :-)

Fans are doing work
the water cooler is still cool
this doesn't seem to be very stressful for the system
so the thermal paste situation is fine?
how long should I let this run?

You can close the apps now.
The temperature settles in a minute or so, so it won't get any higher now.
Everything looks good.

5:25 AM
sweet

That's it then. Your system is done. It's just a case of get on and enjoy the games.

more like wait for the hard drive to allocate space for games

The only thing I would do, when the bank balance has recovered, is replace the disk with an SSD. But big SSDs are scary expensive.

I'm trying to load a bunch into the download queue for when I sleep
@JohnRennie Should I put my Windows key in now?

Yes. Everything looks fine so I would activate it now.
Try Bernardo's key and see if it works.

5:29 AM
Done
Papa bless

Cool! :-)
So ... that's it. All done!

5:39 AM
@JohnRennie modulo a few hundred GB of stuff, I think you're right ;)
Thanks for all the help

You're welcome. It's good fun to see a system come together like that, and I have to say that's one bloody fast system!
The fastest system I have gives an EatCPU score of about 1,400,000 and that with an i7-7500U CPU.

@JohnRennie how old is that chipset?

It's a brand new Dell laptop.

Not that good
Fallout 4 doesn't have the best graphics
@JohnRennie amazing they still put DVD drives in things
my case doesn't have a slot for one

Yes. I guess with a 17" laptop there's lots of spare space in the case so they might as well put in a DVD drive to use up the space.

Sid
5:48 AM
Oo, Apparently JR is God.
@JohnRennie What am I going to do with my life? :P

@Sid drugs and alcohol worked well for me.

Hey!

Sid
Things to note down: Drugs, Alcohol..
what else? :P

@JohnRennie My book says that under the influence of an external magnetic field each subshell is further divided into orbitals. Does this mean that in the absence of magnetic field (which is generally the case), orbitals don't exist?

@Abcd In the hydrogen atom, in the absence of a magnetic field, the orbitals within the $p$, $d$, etc all have the same energy. So they exist but we can't distinguish between them.

5:55 AM
@JohnRennie Why only hydrogen?

We know they must exist because the 2p can hold six electrons, but you can put only two electrons in each orbital.
So the $2p$ must consist of three orbitals, and of course they are the $2p_x$, $2p_y$ and $2p_z$.

@JohnRennie Didn't get you.
@JohnRennie Right.
But is it only for hydrogen?
What about other species?

Actually ignore the hydrogen atom comment. I was thinking of something else. The orbitals within the $p$, $d$, etc have the same energy in all atoms.
That's because atoms are spherically symmetric so there is no preferred direction.
When you apply an external magnetic field you make one direction (the direction of the field) different to other directions. So the orbital lined up in that direction gets a different energy.

@JohnRennie Thanks. Can you help me interpret probability graphs please?

I can have a go.
@Sid Physics? :-)

5:59 AM
@JohnRennie There are three: radial probability graphs, radial probability density and radial probability functions.
I just can't understand how to interpret them
