7:11 PM
sigh kids these days
writing "esta" instead of "ésta"
smh

Oh whoops, I usually write ésta if it's a pronoun

@AccidentalFourierTransform Haha
Accent marks are the difference between saying "father" and "potato"
By the way, am I the only one who thinks the world should use Kelvin in everyday life?

I use radians Fahrenheit

@AccidentalFourierTransform there's a constrained-dynamics tag?
who knew
@JaimeGallego that's so wrong

@EmilioPisanty yeah well
To readers and potential answers: I added the tag constrained-dynamics for organisational purposes. One may presume OP is not familiar with this concept. — AccidentalFourierTransform 41 secs ago

7:16 PM
@JaimeGallego That reminds me. We oughta replace degrees with radians

I basically answered the question by adding a tag :-P

@AccidentalFourierTransform There was a question earlier today about $\epsilon_0$ and $\mu_0$ and getting constants out of that
I seem to remember you commenting on it

yeah, its deleted now

but I can't find it atm

7:17 PM
ah, that'll be why
y'got a link?

@JaimeGallego Have a relevant XKCD: xkcd.com/1643

@AccidentalFourierTransform so... got an answer, therefore deleted it?

F is for freedom, C is for communism
@EmilioPisanty nah, more like "oh, its a dup, Ill delete it"
y'know, OP agreed that it was a duplicate

7:20 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform I don't think it was a dupe

@EmilioPisanty That's because you don't have them keyboard skillz

OP did apparently

I wanted to answer along the lines of yes, you canmake a useful constant out of $\epsilon_0$ and $\mu_0$
it's called $c$
=P
but oh well
@JaimeGallego no, it's because I'm not stuck in a time-loop in the 1980s

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@AccidentalFourierTransform K is for...uh

7:21 PM
=P

maybe next time

@AccidentalFourierTransform Freedom as in Freedom Fries?

@SirCumference and what about them rankines?

@AccidentalFourierTransform No one uses rankines

@EmilioPisanty lol
@SirCumference yeah, poor guy :-(

7:24 PM
though I don't really know why that scale exists
btw

Q: Show Area 51 rep with Area 51 Discussions rep

Sir CumferenceA while ago Nick Craver explained why Area 51 reputation isn't shown in "Your Communities". However, Area 51 Discussions' reputation shows up: Since Discussions' reputation is equal to Area 51's, why not just show Discussion's rep next to the Area 51 link?

tell your friends. or don't.

@SirCumference lolz
area 51 is so broken
in some ways

@EmilioPisanty yup :(

Ya know, I just wondered. Why did Money SE miss the opportunity to name themselves "Stock Exchange"?
Would've been a brilliant name

@SirCumference wasn't money SE an SE 1.0 migration?

7:30 PM
maybe, didn't know

argh, there is this question in the HNL on Math.OF where all the answers are like "from a physicists point of veiw...", or "physicists would argue that..." and they are all wrong :-/
no, physicists wouldn't say that

@AccidentalFourierTransform what's hnl and math.of?

Q: Why is conformal invariance only possible for massless theories?

onamoonlessnightI'm conscious that this isn't necessarily a research level question, but I've asked this question on mathstackexchange, and received no answer. So I'm trying it here. A usual mantra in field theories is the assertion that only massless theories can be conformally invariant. By a theory I mean an...

they are all arguing that you cannot have scale invariance if you have a non-zero mass
and that's not true: Schrödinger's equation is scale-invariant and has a non-zero mass

speaking of HNQs
bejeesus, that is still going
enough is enough

what are you gonna do?
o.O

7:35 PM
enough was enough like last Thursday

let me guess
it has an answer by Floris

@AccidentalFourierTransform funnily enough, yes
but it trails the top-scoring answer by like 110

oh and you're there too
noice

this is now my top-scoring answer
not my first choice for that spot

7:37 PM
@EmilioPisanty Sure enough

@AccidentalFourierTransform I want to

Though it's not showing up for me on the HNQ...

but them rep-cap days

oh yeah, that badge
I already assumed that no way I will ever get it

@AccidentalFourierTransform yeah, that's what I thought too
still do
at least within reasonable time frames
I mean
five years in and I'm 75% through to the silver
but still

@AccidentalFourierTransform yeah, the gold is out of the question
but 38/50 is reasonable enough

I mean, you write answers but not post them
just bookmark the post
and then, one day, you answer 10 questions
4) ???
5) profit

@AccidentalFourierTransform that's...
too much trouble for a badge
I mean
do that
then repeat
150 times.

write - bookmark - rave - repeat

Alternatively, over the course of 150 days answer 150 questions with such brilliant answers that everyone who comes across it feels obligated to upvote - how hard could it be? :P

7:46 PM
I do that every day; still, no upvotes

Ah, you'll get there eventually...

Mathematica has been trying to simplify an expression for an hour now.
I think its safe to assume its not gonna happen
< insert Rachel McAdams picture here >

I hate it when stuff like that happens :/ I had the same issue about 3/4 days ago (only it was Maple, which I've decided to stop using)

is maple better than mathematica?

Doubt it

7:51 PM
lol
why wont you use it anymore?

@AccidentalFourierTransform yes
@AccidentalFourierTransform mma is better
I switched six years ago and never looked back

to be fair I was never formally trained in maple

Ive always been using MMA

but still

7:53 PM
So, the Uni has a license for Maple that allows everyone to install it, making it a simple download, but for Mathematica, you have to e-mail IT to get it (they must have a limited license or something), so thanks to that incident, I've decided to deal with the hassle and just get mathematica

real geeks use brainfuck

Q: How to compress a range of wavelengths into a single wavelength?

DaleGiven the light spectrum from 400 to 500 nano-meters, How can I convert all wavelengths in the range to one wavelength of say 450nm?

yeah, not gonna happen

sorry not sorry

7:55 PM
bye chaps

@AccidentalFourierTransform cyl

Geros Ilas @AccidentalFourierTransform

@Mithrandir24601 you know there's a free online copy, right? Obviously downloading is more convenient, but.
^free and legal, I should say.

@heather Of Mathematica? Where?

let me pull it up so i can give you the url
step 1: create a wolfram id
step 2: click that link and sign in using said id
step 3: click "create new notebook"
i've used it and it works.
you can also view others' notebooks, i believe.

8:09 PM
wait what? Free Mathematica?

free and legal, online mathematica.
see the steps above.

Online, ok
Thanks

yup. like i said, desktop is obviously nice/convenient, but if you can't afford it like me, it works rather well.

yeah, that's a good thing to have

It Works! Thanks :D
I might still end up getting Mathematica anyway, as I can get it for free, but this at least saves the hassle

8:12 PM
yup, no problem =D
i'm glad it worked

Q: Calculating the unified atomic mass unit

adiselannThe masses of electron, proton and neutron (in SI units) are (approx.): \begin{equation} m_e=\text{electron mass}=9.109\times 10^{-31}\ \text{kg} \end{equation} \begin{equation} m_p=\text{proton mass}=1.673\times 10^{-27}\ \text{kg} \end{equation} \begin{equation} m_n=\text{neutron mass}=1.675\t...

possibly a duplicate?

my right earphone stopped working...
...

never mind, found it

2 hours later…
10:30 PM
TIL Stack Overflow gets over 8,000 questions/day
Whereas physics gets around 100

11:09 PM
Yep
