@IcEmybReaD From 15 rep, you can make flags. Click on the "flag" link below the post, so the nearest mod will intervene. Although it is possible, that they won't do anything saying that vote it down. It is also possible, that the post will go into the low quality queue and there will be deleted by community votes.

12:47 AM
Hi
I have a question in Electromagnetics, anybody to help?

1 hour later…
2:06 AM
@peterh I know. I already did that before I messaged him.
clearly it did nothing.

2:44 AM
@2physics Well, it seems most of us sleeps or going to work. Also me.

2:56 AM
Everyone, learn Rust immediately.
@heather
@heather when you at some point want to learn a compiled language, try Rust.
It's sick.

@DanielSank do you know anything about haskell?

3:26 AM
@DanielSank do I have a reason to learn any programming language?

3:41 AM
@IcEmybReaD Nah.
@0ßelö7 Yes. Presumably you want to do work.

@DanielSank honestly, not if it involves programming
I hate it with a passion

:o
@SirCumference hOwdy

@IcEmybReaD Howdy :)

@0ßelö7 k

cool story bro
lol

3:53 AM
@0ßelö7 go learn about feedback in digital signal processing. Then you'll understand QFT better.

@DanielSank ...why would I want to do that?
I don't know any QFT

haha yeah

@DanielSank Remind me why I want to learn rust. I seem to recall that I do, but I can't remember why.
2
Aside: I'm taking a machine learning course from coursera right now. Two things to say.
(A) This is mostly fitting and is old hat, only the business majors have given it all stupid vocabulary that doesn't agree with the use in any other field.
(B) I remember very clearly why I hate matlab's language.

@dmckee why

@0ßelö7 Because it feels like the bastard child of fortran, pseudo mathematical typewriter symbols, and ruddy /bin/sh.
Because the keywords are long and the important functions are strings of gobbledygook letters crammed into 8 characters.

4:08 AM
I hate fortran but love matlab
so what you're saying doesn't make sense to me

Because the matrix manipulation syntax is full of specials cases intended to be convenient but which actually serve to obsfucate what is going on an set traps for the occasional user.

@dmckee mm, yes
Not putting .* breaks everything and it's annoying

@0ßelö7 Right now you don't know enough language to understand that what you like out of matlab is run-time typing, type inference and the power of the abstract machine.
But there are other languages that have all that and don't have the crappy syntax.

I don't think I want to ever get deep enough into a language to know what you're talking about
the thought makes my skin crawl!
I was born 60 years too late

Those are all user-visible properties. You don't have to know anything about what goes on under the hood to understand them.
Matlab can change the type of a variable on the fly: run-time typing.
You often don't have to tell matlab what type it should be: type inference.

4:12 AM
@dmckee indeed

You can perform certain matrix operation with a single operator: powerful abstract machine.

Fortran has this retarded thing where SQRT(5) is undefined
you have to write SQRT(5.)

The last two are fairly unambiguously good. The first has its pros and cons.
@0ßelö7 That's numeric literals having rigidly defined types and there being no type promotion system. A 'feature' of the original era of fortran.
You'll find that c literals also have defined types, but the type promotion system means you rarely have to care.

I saw a car yesterday whose license plate was "F77 64G". I have been trying to decide whether it was a vanity plate making a subtle reference to high-performance computing with old tools, or whether I have a nerd problem.

4:35 AM
@dmckee C but modern and less terrible.
And yeah Matlab is a disastrous language.

@Secret What's that?

The front half is a quote from Harry Potter, the back half is my own extension
this is because there exists scenarios both in reality and fiction where there is a synergistic interaction between something good and something evil

7:07 AM
@Qmechanic: oops, our edits overlapped on physics.stackexchange.com/questions/360507/…

7:34 AM
@dmckee It's nice to know that I'm not the only one

@JohnRennie Please give me the link of your drawing tool.

Google Drawings is a free, web-based diagramming software developed by Google. It allows users to collaborate and work together in real time to create flowcharts, organisational charts, website wireframes, mind maps, concept maps, and other types of diagrams. Google Drawings is also available as a Chrome app that works offline, available from the Chrome Web Store. Google Drawings is hosted within Google Drive and all files created with the application are by default saved to Google Drive. It was originally introduced on April 12, 2010 as Google Docs drawings, a tool for making drawings in Google...
It's part of Google Drive.

Okay, thanks. Let me check.

Just open the Google Drive site and follow the links to create a new drawing.

7:38 AM
It's quite a basic drawing app, but with a bit of practice you can construct quite sophisticated drawings.

Ok.

@Abcd Is that a drawing you want me to look at? If so you'll need to make it public. At the moment I get an access denied error when I click on your link.

@JohnRennie No. Btw isn't MS paint better?

What I usually do is screen grab the drawing, paste it into Paint, crop as necessary and save it as a GIF. Then I can insert the image into a post.
@Abcd MSPaint is not a vector graphics app so it isn't ideal for technical drawings.

England is my city, MS Paint is my Photoshop

7:44 AM
@JohnRennie Okay.

Ah, you worked out how to change the line width?

Yes

8:40 AM
@JohnRennie : Interesting. there seems to be a minor bug: On the revision page your revision (v3) is listed after my revision (v2), clocked at the same time, but it's my revision that is the actual/current version. I guess it's because of mod superpowers. :)

9:20 AM
It's a bit hard to write about the warp drive seriously because one of the major contributor is called Hiscock

1 hour later…
10:27 AM
It's not every day you see the phrase "and will provide insight into early life not only on Earth but also on other planets." in a nature paper... Someone's being a bit optimistic...

How do I solve this?
@JohnRennie are you available now for once? ^^^^

@WrichikBasu you need to know the temperature in the Sun's core ...

@ACuriousMind Can you shed some light on the various different tangent bundles of a Riemann surface?

@BalarkaSen There are different tangent bundles? oO

@WrichikBasu Or what I'd probably do is use the supplied energies to work out the corresponding temperature and see which temperature looks most plausible.

10:30 AM
This may be the part of surfaces I never had to deal with ;)

@ACuriousMind Yeah, it seems like there's the usual complex tangent bundle (just the usual tangent bundle $TX$ with the complex structure coming from the complex structure on $X$), and the complexified tangent bundle, which is $TX \otimes \Bbb C$.

@JohnRennie ok. I'll find sun's temp. What formula should I use?

And apparently $TX \otimes \Bbb C$ decomposes into two subbundles, $T^{1, 0} X$ and $T^{0, 1} X$, which are the holomorphic and the anti-holomorphic tangent bundles respectively.

Ahhh, that's what you mean

@JohnRennie it's about 15 million kelvin.

10:33 AM
@WrichikBasu I would use my second suggestion. The question tells you that the energies given are $1.5kT$, so you can work out what $T$ is.

@WrichikBasu The question already gives you the formula.

@ACuriousMind I think I understand these various players of the game abstractly, but not hands-on.

k is Boltzmann constant?

@BalarkaSen I'm not sure what a hands-on understanding would involve: The complexified bundle is vector fields with complex coefficient functions, and it has natural subbundles where these functions are restricted to be (anti-)holomorphic. What more do you want to know?

OK, it's the last one.

10:40 AM
@ACuriousMind For example if I call the almost complex structure $TX$ inherits as $J$, I can extend that to an almost complex structure on $TX \otimes \Bbb C$ in the obvious way. Then $T^{1, 0} X$ and $T^{0, 1} X$ are merely the eigenspaces of $J$ corresponding to the eigenvalues $\lambda = 1, -1$. Is it immediately clear why this definition agrees with yours (i.e. vector fields w/ holomorphic resp anti-holomorphic coefficients)
I meant $\lambda = i, - i$

@JohnRennie thank you a lot.

@BalarkaSen No, it's not obvious because I was talking non-sense :D

Did ZeDocteur show up again at any point?

@Phase That would have been good entertainment

Indeed
although I used to spend way too much time trying to seek these people out
Like Flerfers

10:54 AM
Nothing to do with the coefficient functions. You just have the Wirtinger derivatives $\frac{\partial}{\partial z}$ and $\frac{\partial}{\partial \bar{z}}$ as a local basis at any point. The first spans the holomorphic space, the second the anti-holomorphic space.

Strangely it was partially what exposed me to maths

@Phase .....how?

Well
a lot of the arguments revolved around rotation
and I had a vague idea of what a matrix was at the time, so it led to rotation operators and differentiating them, and then I just started really liking the idea of operators

ah okay

ofc
I then learned that I knew fuck all about maths
and im still trying to get there now

10:57 AM
@IcEmybReaD Unless I'm currently talking in chat, a message here will not reach me any faster than a flag will.
@Phase "I learned that I knew fuck all" - Socrates for the 21st century :P

@ACuriousMind Sorry, my internet died. Right, that's the definition I know.
I don't really buy Wirtinger derivatives

@ACuriousMind reckon if I went to study philosophy instead I would be a prodigy? : p

@BalarkaSen It appears I shouldn't talk maths less than an hour after I got up ;)

Haha

@BalarkaSen They are just $\partial_x \pm \mathrm{i}\partial_y$, what's there to buy?

11:01 AM
I dunno, what do they really mean? What's the operator do? I know that $\partial_{\bar z}$ kills holomorphic functions and $\partial_z$ kills antiholomorphic ones, but...

@ACuriousMind Isn't this everyone's story of doing a degree? :P

@BalarkaSen That's....what they do!
@Mithrandir24601 Yes.

@Phase yeah he showed up in the math chat

@Mithrandir24601 It usually also involves beginning to suspect that everyone else also doesn't know fuck all, though ;)

me and and another guy trolled the living shit out of him

11:03 AM
NICE
I'm gonna go find it

@ACuriousMind Yeah, I'm beginning to realise just how severe this illness that everyone suffers from is :P

@BalarkaSen Nice got to see go see that

@BalarkaSen I understand the urge to do so, but please just ignore people you don't see yourself having a good conversation with instead of engaging them.
(also addressed to everyone else, this is a general statement)

>scrolling through math chat
>A Wild Berger appears

@ACuriousMind I quite enjoyed the conversation actually

11:06 AM
How long have you all been mistakingly assuming the existence of reals?

The other guy is a discord friend, we were scoring our points and wagering how much piss the doctor would take

@BalarkaSen Yeah...I also understand why that might be enjoyable, but it's not nice or in good faith.

Eh, sure, but as trolls don't usually get banned nearly as quick as this room, and since the user left after the troll, that's justified.

"I'm trying to prevent a large subset of students from WASTING TIME circle jerking each to keep a system of math going that is WORTHLESS."
-TheDoctor

@Phase Let's not drag it into this room, too, please.

11:12 AM
bahaha

Oh You didn't?
Jee did you never try minecraft?
It was all the rage

Please resist the temptation to start wars in this chat room.

@BalarkaSen Nah, I don't agree it's justified. It strikes me as a "fire with fire" or "eye for an eye" mentality that does more harm than good in the long run. In the end, it's not my problem in this case, though, so I'll drop it.

fishy ocelot..? You're doing me a big think right now Prathyush

@PrathyushPoduval How is that a fix?

11:17 AM
removed the cat

But...an ocelot is a cat. It fit perfectly.

8 messages moved to trash

@Phase "Fish ocelot"
@JohnRennie ....why?

1 min ago, by John Rennie
Please resist the temptation to start wars in this chat room.

@JohnRennie If I thought it would actually start a war I wouldn't do it, @0ßelö7 is chill.

11:18 AM
@ACuriousMind huh, might as well be

Anonymous
Were those messages really offensive? I thought @0ßelö7 would laugh at it

Anonymous
Anyway...

It's not offensive, it's just junk

^that, and junk belongs in the trash

@Phase Because someone doesn't mind when you post mindless drivel about them doesn't mean you should post mindless drivel about them.

11:20 AM
@ACuriousMind makes sense

I'm being insulted by SE
RIP

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen I wonder how much meme junk is hidden in this chat :P

Anonymous
@Phase Chatting in the trash can be fun

Anonymous
You should try it out once

@ACuriousMind Well, what do you recommend? The thing is, currently there are way too many crank trolls in the math chat who actively interrupt productive conversations, and the moderation on the chat is nominal. The (counter)troll on our part was a humorous attempt to drive him away (ironically, it worked, but that's another issue); but were there much of any alternative left?

11:24 AM
also

Usually the people who do math run away when they see the chat invaded with trash and trollery; most of the time that's what I do

having read through the transcript
He was ignored for a good while but it didn't stop him
at the beginning I mean

Tthe thing is, with these kinds of trollery, there's not much of an official way to stop it. It's not flaggable material because it's not offensive.

@BalarkaSen Get better moderation, then. And I see no issue with "running away" - don't forget that you can just make your own room you can run to and keep talking with the people you actually want to talk to there.

That's a good point
Is there actually content quality control in Chat rooms?

11:27 AM
You could even make the room a gallery where you have to approve new users first before they can talk
@Phase That's entirely up to the room's owners
There's no rule against moving anything you don't like out of your own room, as long as you do it politely.

@BalarkaSen when TheDoctor appeared here ACM kicked him out, as I would have done were I in the room at the time.
That needs to be done in the math chat. If it isn't being done the room needs more owners to be added.

@JohnRennie You need an active room owner for that, though. Balarka is right that this wouldn't have been a case for flagging.

Anonymous
Why not just use ignore this user (everywhere) and solve all problems?

You said that it's up to the owners, but then say that it needs to be done
Idk
Also, people actually have conversations in Trash?
"Y'know, it's probably best not to have these conversations in the trash. It gets kinda stinky :P"

I was added as a room owner here specifically to help control an outbreak of flame wars that we had a while back. I suspect I was added mainly because I'm here so often rather than any great skill at moderating chat :-)

11:31 AM
This is getting too meta for me

@Phase Perhaps, but you shouldn't do that - I'm sure if you keep talking in there someone will show up and reprimand you :P

@Phase you could ping the room owners and volunteer to be a room owner.

@ACuriousMind That's been tried before, but the glaring drawback of doing that is we don't get participation in the conversations from the various other users in the math chat. Most of the time conversations can be moved to other rooms if it's a person-to-person or at least between three persons. But sufficiently mathematical conversations deserve to get attention from a fair proportion of the users

@BalarkaSen Ah. In that case, since it is the main chat of your site, it might we time to raise the issue on meta - unless that's been done already?

@Blue I can do that, but will the others? Plus if someone starts trolling others will start feeding the troll, which makes a group of people ignore another group of feeders.

11:33 AM
@BalarkaSen volunteer to be a room owner

Don't you think that makes matter complicated than simpler?

@ACuriousMind BUT WHERE WOULD THE CONVERSATION BE MOVED TO??
this is disturbing to consider

@Phase There's a secret trash ;)

Why can't another flag reason be added for cases such as this?

@JohnRennie Eh, I don't wanna. I would want an active group of room owners, though, but probably that involves having the consent of the current room owner?

11:34 AM
(I'm not kidding, there's a room called "Trashcan" only moderators can see)

@ACuriousMind what if mods start going against the norm and talking there, we'd need a recursive loop of trashcans

@BalarkaSen well you can't complain if you aren't prepared to help.

It's been brought up before in the chat, actually. There was a flurry of troll flagging and drama going on in chat a few weeks ago and a 10k+er said we want a better room owner.

@Phase Then Shog comes and bans us all for wasting his time, end of discussion.

Don't say his name in vain
we'll get erased

11:36 AM
@JohnRennie That's like saying you can't complain about Donald Trump's actions if you aren't prepared to be the president of US.

@Phase does anyone know if his name is a Lovecraft reference?

So can people with enough rep actively type to Trash? Or do they just make a room and move their own messages to the trash

@Phase The Trash room exists for room owners and moderators to move message to that don't need to be deleted from the face of the earth but for whatever reason shouldn't stay in the room they're currently in.

@BalarkaSen I would say it was more like you have no right to complain if you aren't prepared to vote. Room owners have only very limited powers and responsibilities.

Can people move their own messages in their own room to trash to converse?

Sid
11:37 AM
@ACuriousMind humph. Mods can see way too many secret rooms. No fair!
Also, is there any benefit of having non-mods to be ROs?

@Sid yes, it means you can nominate people like me who should under no circumstances be trusted with moderatorial powers :-)

@Sid Sure, mods are not always around or may not have an interest in participating in chat much, so adding other active users to be ROs can ensure that there'll usually (or even always) be an RO active.

what is an RO?

Room Owner

like a substitute mod?
nvm

11:41 AM
@JohnRennie Wanna test that hypothesis by running in the next election? ;P

Sid
@Phase sort of. ROs don't have the blue mod powers though.
All they can do is pin messages and unpin them.

@ACuriousMind absolutely not. I can't see any upside in being a moderator. I admire you chaps for doing it but I think you need your heads examined :-)

@Sid No, they can also kick users from the room and move messages to other rooms including the Trash.

plot twist: @ACuriousMind meant for president, after Balarka's suggestion

@JohnRennie Interesting!

11:43 AM
wait, "other rooms including the trash"
You can move messages to any room?
So if say, someone asked a biology question

They also actually could delete messages by a direct API request until recently.
@Phase Yes.

Sid
@JohnRennie you can see all the secrets of your SE site too. :P
And have access to all powers

I haven't read any good horror in a while
any suggestions?

scary movie 1,2,3
scared the shit out of me

@BalarkaSen The news.

11:45 AM
@JohnRennie dislikes Lovecraft I think

@BalarkaSen Whether Lovecraft counts as good horror is debatable :-)

Sid
@PrathyushPoduval that's comic. Not scary

@ACuriousMind I can't even laugh

I feel like Lovecraft isn't "horror" as much as it is "creepy"

@JohnRennie heheh

11:45 AM
what is dis lovecraft?

@BalarkaSen no, I grew up reading Lovecraft and still retain an unreasobale affection for his work.

i never really found the cosmic horror anything but unsettling
I think that's what it's meant to be

@PrathyushPoduval WHAT!!!!!!!!!

@JohnRennie I don't suppose you play video games?

no idea what it is

11:46 AM
@PrathyushPoduval your taste in horror movies is shit

Sid
@BalarkaSen Read Dracula

Sid
Or watch The Conjuring

@Sid wot, you call it horror?

@BalarkaSen: what sort of horror do you like? The slasher end of the genre or the more psychological end?

Anonymous
11:47 AM
@Sid What

Anonymous
That's not even horror

Anonymous
Suitable for kids though

@JohnRennie I thought lovecraft was a movie till I googled it now :P

Sid
@Blue it is. At least that's what it's genre is

@Phase I played Doom and Quake obsessively when they were first released, but I rarely game these days.

11:48 AM
@JohnRennie: I like psychological horror. I read a bunch of slasher-inclined things by Clive Barker but I always interpreted it as psychological horror.

None of the movies are scary when you watch it on TV
to get scared, you need to watch em in the theatres

@JohnRennie fairly recently there was a pretty good game that drew heavily from Lovecraft, like the Amygdala that are invisible until you "line your brain with eyes"
Bloodborne had a really good feel for cosmic horror I feel

@Prathyush Cheap popcorn flying horror is not what I really call horror

@BalarkaSen The most unsettling book I've ever read is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. But it's horror lies in the way dreadful things can become accepted as normal.

@BalarkaSen I was not referring to scary movie, I recommended it as a joke
@JohnRennie normal depends on the enviornment you have been brought up

11:51 AM
@JohnRennie Ah, fatalism is one of my favorite aspects in horror. I'll check it out.

Sid
@BalarkaSen maybe The Silence of The Lambs?
It's one of my all time favorite movies

I like that movie.

Sid
Maybe Se7en if you haven't seen that yet?

Anonymous
Anyone watched The Exorcist here?

Fun fact: Jonathan Demme, the director of The Silence of The Lambds, directed "Stop Making Sense" in collaboration with Talking Heads
which is a weird ass movie and I love it

11:53 AM
Do you mean the original or the infinite clones it spawned
Seriously how many Exorcist clones are gonna exist by the end of the Human race

Anonymous
@Phase Original one..obviously

@Sid Ohh, Se7en, right. That's one thing I haven't seen but I have been recommended a lot
Fincher is generally great. Is it good?
I know it features a song in the end credits from one of my favorite albums :3

Sid
I don't know about music. But the movie is great.

Ok, I'll add it to my to-watch list

Sid
It's been almost half a decade since I last saw that. So, I might not have the best recollection

The Grudge series was enjoyable

oh, quick question
One of my lecturers is concerning me because either I don't understand something simple or they don't
is the origin (0,0...,0) of the space you're working in
if it's cartesian

12:05 PM
@Phase what were people saying?

@Phase yes

Well, it was a particle that started at t=0 at say, x = a such that $a \neq 0$, and in the question it asked for when the particle crossed the origin, which doesn't happen. It didnt specify "origin of x", yet my lecturer blanked me when I asked him

Sid
if you are living in a democracy, whatever the majority of the people say is correct. Even if it is wrong, it is right

@Sid $\frac{1}{0} = 4$

@Phase ah, OK, origin might just mean the spatial origin.

12:06 PM
Omg did I miss drama

but surely then it would have to specify that

@BalarkaSen @Blue what happened

@0ßelö7 nothing, people wanted to trigger you
and the trigger got sent to the trash

Tell me how
I saw a fish meme

@Phase I suspect it's just lazy terminology and it does mean $x=0$ regardless of the time

12:07 PM
"trigger" is a bit harsh, was just meant to be a jolly jape
Ok, fair
I just got a bit annoyed that the lecturer seemingly blanked what I was saying :(

Was the fish the only thing?
I deserve to know

the only coherent thing at least

Anonymous
@0ßelö7 Check out the trash room for further details. Here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/57121

I just quoted some quack from another room and tagged you in it, because the quack was spouting nonsense about maths

@Phase Lecturers often have to lecture on stuff they don't know very well and about which they don't care much. Not ideal, but it happens.

12:09 PM
@Blue I saw only a fish meme there

It didn't get deleted for severe reasons, just being junk

Anonymous
@0ßelö7 Yeah, it was just that

Anonymous
Nothing more

Bullshit
Not telling me is offensive

12:09 PM
One time they asked how to find the competed square form of a function and I prefer differentiation then setting it to 0, and I brought that up and the lecturer went "no"
laughed
and then asked for another answer

@JohnRennie I deserve to know

Hm
What's the original paper of anti de sitter space

@0ßelö7 there was some nutter posting junk in the maths chat room, and someone here said something like that will trigger 0ßelö7.

Morning

If he wants to know can I just tell him? : p

12:11 PM
Then they started posting silly ocelot memes. Nothing very witty.
@0ßelö7 I deleted the posts because they were junk not because they were particularly offensive.

Some dude was basically just raging about Banach tarski and other such things

How many spacetimes were named after kitchen appliances

anyway cya all, gotta go to more wonky lectures

12:14 PM
Have fun :-)

@Slereah what database are you trying to make? (is it related to your book?)

A database of spacetimes
