@DanielSank People might be thinking about those algorithms for reasons other than implementing them, e.g. purely for theoretical computer science. Of course, if they ultimately aim to implement the algorithm, then you're right.

@ACuriousMind Yes I'm talking about cases wherein an algorithm/idea is described and sold to academic journal editors under the promise that said algorithm/idea is the next thing we should all build.

I recently reviewed a protocol which the authors specifically claimed to be efficient. However, they offered little to no indication that this protocol is efficient in the face of even basic non-idealities.

This is troubling.

"No air friction" physics is important but very limited.

Even from the point of view of a pure theoretical investigation, I want to know how small nonidealities change the results. For example, in a discussion of phase transitions, I want to know what happens in a very small system, etc.

The performance of algorithms under nonzero hardware error rate is a fascinating subjecet, and particularly important in quantum computing.

Suppose I put an RF emitter somewhere near you.

I measure the field strength at your head. I get some number.

I use aluminum to shield my more sensitive electronics. I honestly think tinfoil would work just fine.

Now we put a tin hat on your head and measure the field strength again. It's higher because the hat acts as a resonant cavity.

Conclusion: the conspiracy theory that the government is listening to your brainwaves was perpetuated by the government so that people would wear tin foil hats, thus increasing the field strength at their heads and enabling the government to listen to their brainwaves.

@DanielSank Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. My collagen is flimsy/stretchy, so my joints deteriorate about 3x faster than a normal person's. Also, I was EXTREMELY active before I figured out that I have EDS, which made them deteriorate even faster. Oops.
