12:10 AM
@obe You won't understand anything serious about QM in 30 days, that's the reality of things :P
(if you don't already know a lot of the basics)

12:33 AM
out here in the fields
I fought for my meals
I gave my back into my liviiing

@ACuriousMind ::starts Mount & Blade: Warband::
@ACuriousMind CTD

They're all wasted.

fuuuuuuuu

Don't cry.

@ACuriousMind it...won't...play
my PC froze

12:43 AM
Well...that's not my fault!

My mini died :(
Not even 8 months old :-/

How do you guys break such things?

Abuse?
:D

@ACuriousMind well fuck this thing won't play....

@0celo7 If it doesn't play at minimal settings, try validating the files, perhaps the download went wrong?

12:47 AM
minimal settings? I know I have a potato but damn...

Well, turning down the settings is the first thing to do when something doesn't play, I'd say.

@ACuriousMind what you do is switch to OSX and play it there
well now I don't have an fps counter

@Danu I agree

@ACuriousMind what the heck is with these fighting controls??
why am I waving my mouse around like a Wiimote

12:54 AM
@0celo7 They take a bit of getting used to, yes
But when you're on a horse, the right swing of your weapon is very important

not having my trusty fps/GPU monitor at the top is worrisome...I'll try the PC version again

Why would you worry about the fps? Either the game looks smooth to you or it doesn't

I am not a logical man
(also I can't take screenshots)
@ACuriousMind and yet it worked when I upped it to 1800p...sucka
@ACuriousMind what is this "estimated performance"
lol it crashed when I set everything to max
why am I so dumb
now it won't start again I bet

@0celo7 A very broken estimate for how well the game will perform at the settings. Pay it no heed, just try it out.

argh it keeps crashing when I edit settings
@ACuriousMind behold the glorious 1800p image

1:10 AM
@0celo7 I know how M&B looks ;)

obe
@Danu 30 days.

@obe rhino $\not\cong$ unicorn, his struggle is futile
@ACuriousMind you've never seen it this large
look at how tiny the Steam dialogue in the corner is

obe
@0celo7 Elephant?

Rhino $\cong$ elephant, apparently :P

idk what this elephant business is

obe
1:17 AM
@0celo7 Improvise.
Do you see the allusion?

no

obe
;<

@KyleKanos why is Cloud such a dick

Wait...what?
How is he a dick?

he doesn't care what that dude's name is
also when can I save?

1:23 AM
Oh yeah, Barrett

I need to change these horrible controls

Cloud just wants his money. He becomes more likeable soon enough

no

1st save point is just before setting off the bomb

Cloud
@KyleKanos well crap I can't handle these controls
@KyleKanos I see

1:24 AM
Can't change them in menu?

no, only in the loader
I can't figure out where to go :/

Streaming?

when I can save, yes.
I also need to reduce the resolution to something that will fit on twitch :)

What room are you in?

Barret just asked me if this is my first time in a reactor
I said no I was in one when I went to ORNL

1:28 AM
You're in the elevator?

no
good music

Did you go through the security doors?

yes
this is really strangely cinematic

Did you speak to the other two characters near Barrett?

I have to push a button
"switch on"

1:30 AM
In the elevator, yes

fucking Cloud

Out of the elevator, go down the two stairs & straight through the door at the bottom

what is up with these camera angles
does Jesse stay behind?

At the rafters, yes

Cloud is down to 120HP
SAVE POINT

1:35 AM
Are you escaping battles or fighting them?

fighting
alright I'll figure out how to stream this game now

I don't recommend fighting in the reactor. You'll be able to beat the boss w/o leveling & you can't really heal effectively during this part

too late
@KyleKanos stream is up but I'm configuring the game right now so you should see a black screen

Roger

there's a lot of buttons to configure
@KyleKanos suggestions?
I'm making movement WASD

1:41 AM
Never played on keyboard
Google brings me to this page: finalfantasy7pc.com/game-info/game-controls

@KyleKanos thanks, taking into account
(for my reference on my second monitor)

2:39 AM
@KyleKanos back

Back to streaming?

yeah i had family things to do

That was fast

@KyleKanos so?

2 hours later…
4:23 AM
@ChrisWhite If you use glass of porcelain white boards always erase. But if you spend that much your not coming out ahead of quality blackboards on price.
I've used real slate boards, and I'll take them. But I can't tolerate cheap blackboards. Slate or porcelain or nothing.
My current place uses whiteboards and I'm OK with that: they also provide markers, so I can grab some fresh ones from the supply cabinet whenever one of mine runs dry (I keep 2 of every color in my marker mug.

3 hours later…
7:24 AM
@dmckee Heresy! :P

2 hours later…
9:07 AM
I kinda hate how vague the notion of "particle" is in physics
It is used a bit too willy nilly to describe too many things

9:21 AM
What do you think the corresponding notion is in math @Slereah?

I do not know it

I'm guessing "infinity"?

what

10:21 AM
It is used to describe too many things
:D

oh
Well only like 3 or 4

Infinitely many things could be described as too many things.
I'm just playing with the words :P

2 hours later…
12:03 PM
@KyleKanos Do you know if there's any data out there on Trump losing business deals (before this election) due to flippant remarks? I'd say that would be a very good predictor of future behavior.
@Slereah Why did you say Ricci-flat spacetimes have no energy physics.stackexchange.com/questions/199366/…
I'm convinced everyone read that question wrong

12:17 PM
@ACuriousMind Let $\phi\in\operatorname{Diff}(M)$ and $g$ be a metric on $M$. Do you have an easy way of showing that $\operatorname{Riem}[\phi^*g]=\phi^*\operatorname{Riem}[g]$?
My "poor man's proof" would be to calculate the curvature of $\phi^*g$ and then compare that to the pullback of $g$'s curvature.

Looks to me like of those things one indeed has to check by brute force computation

Huy
I can confirm that I know of no elegant proof either.

@ACuriousMind OK, so if the diffeomorphism changes coordinates from $x$ to $y$, one would calculate the curvature of $g_{\mu\nu}'(y)$ and of $g_{\mu\nu}(x)$, then transform the $g_{\mu\nu}(x)$ curvature to $y$ coordinates?

@0celo7 Because they have no energy?
The stress energy tensor is 0

@0celo7 Yep. (You can of course also invert the diffeo and go from $y$ to $x$, but that doesn't change anything)

12:23 PM
Unless you mean also like Einstein pseudotensor energy

@Slereah You're telling me Schwarzschild spacetime has no energy?

But I mean in basic GR

Is has ADM and Komar energy, don't know about Bondi.

Depends how you define it

OP did not specify which kind of energy.

12:24 PM
Well yes but then what do I do

> No energy whatsoever

You can define Schwarzschild as a Dirac distribution

What?

You can indeed
It's not done a lot because it's mathematically harduous
But the formalism is around

What is a Dirac distribution?

12:25 PM
Dirac delta

Huy
ö.ö

How is Schwarzschild spacetime a delta function?
Also, in the comments, he said zero curvature. All zero curvature spaces are isometric to Minkowski spacetime, so that question is very unclear.

If you define the stress energy tensor as a Dirac distribution of mass m, then the resulting spacetime is Scwharzschild

oh yeah, probably
but that doesn't make much sense because the manifold does not include the origin

Instead of removing the singularity point like a cheater :V

12:28 PM
oh yeah because having a delta function is so much better

Well you don't remove the point if you work with distributions

so you can prove the singularity theorems using distributions

Distributions are nice!
They are just less nice in non-linear equations
that's why they are seldomly used in GR
Except for like
Thin shell formalism and stuff like that
and even then you still keep the manifold C^3 or so

@ACuriousMind Do you use shift for sprint? If yes, do you press it with your ring finger or pinky?

@0celo7 pinky

12:33 PM
Whaaat
My pinky can't hit that key properly, it rests on caps lock.
I need to practice that
My keyboard skills are very poor

Perhaps my left-hand fingers are more agile because I am left-handed, but I have no problem at all hitting either capslock, shift or ctrl with my pinky

tfw left-handed
I'm a failure :'(
ctrl??
holy crap

What else would you do with your pinky on the keyboard?

nothing

Put it up
So that you are classy

12:41 PM
Ok, I see how you can hit ctrl on a PC keyboard
my ctrl is half the size of yours
@ACuriousMind what keyboard do you have again?

@0celo7 Logitech G110

I'm so used to laptop keyboards I don't think I could type on that
@ACuriousMind what DPIs are good?
I'm looking at mouse + keyboard bundles on Newegg

@0celo7 Completely depends on the game, resolution, and your personal preference

how am I supposed to know oO

That's why I would get a mouse with adjustable DPI :P

12:48 PM
well yes but what range should I be looking for
oh yours has all those fancy buttons on the side

@0celo7 Dunno...mine goes up to 5700 DPI, but that's probably not necessary, I never use the highest setting#

OK that just looks ridiculous
@ACuriousMind lol can you put an FPS monitor on that little screen?

@0celo7 I don't have such a screen, but I believe you can, yes

@ACuriousMind do you use the G keys often?

Very rarely

12:55 PM
it seems like something for MMO players, right?
wow this keyboard can do a lot of stuff...

I guess it's for them to configure essential keystrokes, yes. I never found a really good use for them

@ACuriousMind are your media controls on the F# keys or separate

@0celo7 What are "media controls"?

vs.
the 510S also has built-in volume controls

@0celo7 Separate, I use the volume adjusting thingy quite often

1:00 PM
yeah that's a huge annoyance
(not having that)
@ACuriousMind I have to keep my oppressively small dorm desk in mind :/
the 510S (the new version of yours I think) is pretty big
gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/rgb-gaming-keyboard-g910 you plug in your phone and use it to monitor temp, fps, etc.

@0celo7 ...your desk isn't large enough to fit a proper desktop setup?

Huy
Corsair keyboards ftw.

@ACuriousMind I remember thinking they were crazy small

@skillpatrol: I think starring your own things is frowned upon :P

Huy
K70 RGB rules everything.

1:07 PM
@0celo7 Map ctrl to caps lock then, it's not like you need caps lock for anything. Or learn how to press ctrl with your palm. Learn emacs and you'll get used to chording. Get one of those ergonomic keyboards where you can hit ctrl with your thumbs.

@alarge with my palm
let's see you hit that with your palm

@ACuriousMind excuse me?

@ACuriousMind would you like to see my proof?

@ACuriousMind ooooo you're gonna get carpal tunnel

1:10 PM
@skillpatrol Okay, I might be confused, but you are also skullpatrol, right? (If not, or if you didn't star the ban hammer there, forget it and I apologize)
@0celo7 ??
Because I can use my pinky?

says here that's very bad

@ACuriousMind No need to apologize pal. If skill starred skull's comment he can not star them again and raise their star value, right?

Well, it's not that I have to press ctrl very often

that was way higher than it should have been

lol, I just unexpectedly looked at a phallic shaped cactus.

Huy
1:14 PM
@0celo7: I bought a regular K70 years ago, for about $100. I got a free upgrade to a K70 RGB, which is more expensive. As for mouses, that's really up to your preference. I've been a long time fan of my G700, but I'd try something else (non-Logitech, probably Corsair) out if this one breaks anytime soon.

I have absolutely no concept which mouse I should get
how on Earth am I supposed to decide

@ACuriousMind observe now while I star them
ready?

@skillpatrol Alright, I'm looking

Huy
@0celo7: I believe Corsair also just released a new keyboard, with mechanical but "silent" keys, I don't know how silent they are but I would consider that, because my girlfriend always complains about the loudness of my mechanical keys now.

@ACuriousMind ;-)

1:15 PM
@skillpatrol Okay, sorry!

Huy
@0celo7: Do you not have a shop nearby with at least some mouses to check out?

@Huy there are shops with mice?

@ACuriousMind np pal

Huy
@0celo7: Or friends who already have some?

@Huy Dont they all use the same set of keys though? As in blue/red/black/brown whatever, and some of those are more silent than others?

1:16 PM
@Huy I don't know any PC gamers

Huy
@alarge: I didn't read what they use for the new mechanical keyboard, but I think it's different ones, because they were still called reds, and reds are usually very loud.
@alarge: Maybe it's some custom produces keys which feel like reds but don't make as loud sounds.

@Huy does your keyboard have dedicated volume controls?

@Huy Apparently so. Good to know as I'm in the market for a new keyboard soon.

I think that's a selling point for me

Huy
@alarge: Yeah. I would definitely go for silent ones now, even though personally I don't have any problem with the noise.
@0celo7: Check out photos. It has, and really good ones IMO.

1:18 PM
I'll wait until I get some actual measurements of my desk. It would very well be larger than I remember.

Huy
@0celo7: The scrolling wheel of this type has been copied now by many keyboard manifacturers - although I'm sure people before Corsair already did this too.

@Huy ah they were obscured in the oblique angle shots I looked at

Huy
@0celo7: So much more intuitive, such a scrolling wheel for volume. I have no idea how keyboard manifacturers didn't always only have such.
@alarge: Also, I think Corsair recently changed its logo again, so it's no longer a tramp stamp. That's a big plus. :D
(my keyboard has a tramp stamp)

so why should I get this one over a $20 cheaper Logitech
or a $10 cheaper logitech

Huy
@0celo7: Which Logitech?
@0celo7: Pretty sure most Logitech Gaming Keyboards aren't mechanical.

Huy
@0celo7: Personally, I'd find that keyboard really really ugly, but that's up to you of course.

why do I care about mechanical

Huy
You don't have to. It feels different. I played a lot better when I started using a mechanical keyboard.

@0celo7 If you don't, why would you be willing to shell out $100 when you can get standard keyboards for like $20.

Huy
1:24 PM
I can type a lot faster, before I had a mechanical keyboard I had maybe 650 keystrokes per minute, now I have over 750.

it comes in blue

Also, I would not trust Logitech to make anything well.

@alarge I don't know if I care
@alarge does the Corsair have USB plugs in it?

@0celo7 Try finding a shop and go try them there. But surely you've noticed that the Apple keyboard you have is, like any laptop-y, keyboard, horrible for typing.

Huy
@0celo7: The K70 used to, the K70 RGB not anymore. There are other models though, maybe some of them do.

1:26 PM
@alarge I type better on this than the "standard" ones at school
which isn't saying much
I'm a terribly slow typist
@Huy that's a deal breaker because my laptop only has two USB ports and I don't want to shell out $30 for a thunderbolt adapter

@0celo7 Well if you don't touch type, doesn't really matter what you get. For gaming a mechanical keyboard may be a bit faster, but you'd only care if you played at a pro level.

Huy
@0celo7: Sure. You have to adjust to your personal needs. :)

I do touch type, but not quickly.

Huy
@0celo7: I think if you'll go with the Logitech, you won't be disappointed either. I just don't like the design and I think all Corsair products I've used so far feel more premium.

@Huy so for these volume adjustable keyboards do you have to use a USB headset or do they have 3.5mm jacks?
Right now I use a pair of Sony XB500s that are standard 3.5mm

Huy
1:29 PM
@0celo7: I plug my speaker/headphones into my 3.5mm jack of my PC.
@0celo7: Can't speak for the Logitech keyboard though, but I'd assume it works like that too.

but the volume control on the keyboard works?

Huy
Yes, @0celo7.

@0celo7 They control the PC volume on a software level, no need to plug the speakers into the keyboard itself

@ACuriousMind very good
my roommate is a gamer, maybe he will bring a mechanical keyboard

Huy
@0celo7: You can check out r/mechanicalkeyboards or some similar subreddit to ask for advice or look for more different keyboards to compare, if you like.
@0celo7: I discoved the K70 by browsing it, and I am thoroughly satisfied.

1:31 PM
Like I said, the lack of a USB port for my mouse is a deal breaker. I don't want to have to get out my wireless keyboard every time I need to use a USB stick.
if I had a wireless mouse for school work, that would be fine. But as it stands my wireless mouse's insides are covered in battery corrosion.

Huy
@0celo7: I meant as in: You will find a lot of different keyboards there - not only Corsair and Logitech - and maybe you find something you like even more.

does walmart have gaming keyboards on show

Huy
doubt it

oh that G710 is only $100 on Amazon and it has a USB port
@ACuriousMind how is Logitech customer support?

@0celo7 ...what? No idea

1:38 PM
@ACuriousMind I'm assuming you did research before buying your keyboard
return policy, etc.

I didn't buy it from Logitech directly

@ACuriousMind the USB port will run a mouse, right?

@0celo7 Yes

what are "blue" switches
@ACuriousMind why are 2 USB ports a requirement??

Huy
@0celo7: One for the keyboard, one for the USB port, probably.

1:41 PM
@Huy seriously
that defeats the purpose!

Huy
@0celo7: Yes. Also see the link for an explanation of different switches.

well Corsair is back on the list

Huy
@0celo7: It's best to try out different switches IRL though. But that's better than nothing.

I thought you used one USB3 port to run the keyboard and mouse

Huy
@0celo7: If this buying keyboard project can wait a bit, I could help more after my exam tomorrow. Or after my last exam on Friday.

1:43 PM
@Huy It's waiting until I measure my desk and see what's reasonable
I remember it being really small, but compared to my current desk everything is small

Huy
@0celo7: Here's a picture of my desk with my old K70: i.imgur.com/3Z4ZmgS.jpg :P

where is the clutter
where are the textbooks
where are the cups, pocket change, USB sticks, glasses

Huy
@0celo7: I have another desk for that.
(not a joke)

my whole setup is thinner than one of those monitors

Huy
:D

1:46 PM
my laptop is less than three times the thickness of my phone
also that chair is really nice, I got the one my dad bought in the 80s
it has mystery stains
@ACuriousMind got you playing that game again I see

Huy
Yeah, I really like the chair. Two friends bought it too because I allowed them to sit on it when they were at my place.

@Huy So blue keys are really loud.

@0celo7 Yep, you did :D

Huy
Yep.

@Huy I don't think I can justify a $40 price jump for the Corsair over the G710+
I could get a nicer mouse with that extra cash.
@Huy This G710+ comes with brown switches. Thoughts?

Huy
1:52 PM
@0celo7: I just don't like the feel of it as much as of reds. But that's very subjective.

I need to hunt down the PC gamers in my dorm.

Huy

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8556/corsair-gaming-k70-rgb-mechanical-keyboard-review/4
@0celo7: Just if you want to read some objective reviews. There's a lot more on the internet, but I really like anandtech.

Well gotta go. Nice chat, @Huy .

Huy
Have a nice one, @0celo7.
" The Corsair Gaming K70 RGB has only one real enemy: its own price tag. Actually, the competition from other companies is minimal, with very few products (such as the still unavailable $170 Razer Chroma, which "ships in 3-4 weeks") capable of coming anywhere near the Corsair Gaming K70 RGB in most respects. The major competition that the Corsair Gaming K70 RGB faces comes from Corsair themselves." @0celo7
