Jim
10:11 PM
Check out this guys user profile pic
then go to his only question

@Danu 'sup?

Jim
It's different for me. Is the pic different for anyone else?

supsupsup

@Jim Huh. Yeah, it's different for me, too.

@ChrisWhite Thanks for the clarifications :)

Jim
10:14 PM
@ACuriousMind How he do that?

Blackest of magicks, I guess

Jim
or magnets

Same thing, really

Jim
touché
This new Jim is trying to show me up by using magic

user54412
@Jim In our grad student seminar, we are encouraged to ask the speaker lots of questions. One prof pointed out that if all else fails, we can always ask "but what about the magnetic fields?" of pretty much any astro talk.

Jim
10:22 PM
That would work, now that you mention it
For me, if I'm answering a whole bunch of "How does this work?" questions, a good fallback answer is always "magnets".
Most non-physicists don't know enough physics to say otherwise, plus it's fun to attribute everything to magnets
But seriously, how is JimK's pic different in his question than in his profile?

@DanielSank how are you doing?

user54412
@Jim More seriously, are you stalking all the new Jims?

Even more seriously...

It seems the king of Jims keeps a close eye on his subjects

Jim
@ChrisWhite Not stalking, caring for my subjects

10:27 PM
@Jim That sounds eerily much like what Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time would say...

Jim
It's not stalking if they don't know I'm doing it

@Danu What? :D I am not sure how that fits into the conversation

@ACuriousMind It's sorta a running gag in my friend group to interrupt conversations with this...
Just look at that video though!
Just a classic.

Jim
Is it too late to say his being a Jim is a coincidence?

@Danu I never realized that song had such a strange video
@Jim Yes

10:31 PM
Neither did I!
but I will never forget!

Me neither, I guess

those weird zooming in and out shots of the statue

user54412
id would be redundant, we can already see that. gravatar gives us a visual hash of data that is NOT present, your IP/email. — Jeff Atwood ♦ Jul 2 '09 at 4:42

user54412
I know nothing about the internet, but are gravatars actual hashes of private data?

yikes!

user54412
10:35 PM
Surely it must be a non-injective map, right?

lol it better be
I assume the level sets are regions of >100km radius... I hope?
I really like discussing things in overly technical manner
I recently learned that the pullback of a differential form induces a homomorphism of cochain complexes
isn't that just... beautiful?!

user54412
it took me about 5 seconds to figure out how to pronounce cochain

user54412
clearly been a while since I did anything categorical

he-he-he
I dont know anything about category theory
but it came up in my diffgeo class
De Rham cohomology
algebraists really like fancy schmancy words

user54412
I've actually studied more algebra than any other branch of pure math, but I know less of it than anything else.

10:40 PM
you know more about analytic number theory? ;)

@ChrisWhite You sure there's a difference in cardinality between your algebra-not-knowledge and your other-math-not-knowledge? ;)

^ignorance is the word you're looking for ;)

Hmmm. I like not-knowledge better :)

so ignorant

user54412
@ACuriousMind Can my answer depend on Choice?

10:42 PM
NO!

Probably. Or it's independent of ZFC, I can't decide.

Damn you choice! I hate that I need you!

@ChrisWhite as I recall, the Gravatar ID is an MD5 hash of the email address used to register the account. That's why SE now offers the option not to use a Gravatar.

What does it mean for something to be independent of ZFC?
surely you need some axioms? do you replace ZFC with something else?

@Danu That neither it nor its negation are implied by ZFC

10:44 PM
@ACuriousMind So... that it's undecidable using ZFC?

user54412
@Danu I remember Ron (and maybe Lubos?) arguing strongly that mathematicians shouldn't be using full AC, at least for physics things. Countable choice suffices.

@ChrisWhite Idk, and I probably don't care that much either

@Danu Hm, I'd say yes, but there is probably some subtle difference

user54412
In particular, you can dodge definable but non-measurable subsets of the reals.

@ChrisWhite I actually think something like the axiom of choice is kind of beautiful

10:46 PM
who is having trouble visiting the website and seeing a microsoft page?

It's so... human ;)
...really it's just the name

Ah, sometimes undecidable means that it is impossible to construct an algorithm that proves/solves the thing. Other times, it's indeed that same as independent.

help!

user54412
@TAbraham Um... no. No problem here.

@ChrisWhite that's weird... it just came back!

10:49 PM
Fine here, too
Though chat did shortly time out

all fine here

@TAbraham everybody was, for a few minutes

Q: What happened to the stackexchange network?

مجاهدA few minutes ago the whole SE network seemed to be inaccessable, and on some pages I still get the same errors, either a 404 error: or the following: (I get these errors when I visit area51, Islam.SE, and Stackexchange.com (except for this meta))

and
Sorry about the IIS default page that some were seeing - a new web server snuck into the load balancer early. Should be fixed.

@DavidZ ok..thanks...

oh, sick! nicely spotted @TAbraham

user54412
wow, you people are refreshing the site way too often :P

10:54 PM
what's "snowops" mean?

@ChrisWhite no I was just visiting the site as I closed the stack exchange tab...

@Danu I would guess something to do with the snow in NYC but I don't know

@DavidZ good guess..

some big maintenance type thing
also is there a lot of snow in NYC atm?

@Danu maybe a code name relating to the snow storm?
@Danu yes.. the east coast is bombarded with snow...

user54412
10:58 PM
You know, I'm still angry about the latest "snow" here. Everyone swore it would be the storm of the millenium. Every governor and mayor declared martial law, saying they'd arrest anyone out of their homes. And now, 2 inches of accumulation later, it's all melting.

lmao

@ChrisWhite reallly? where do you live? maybe u just escaped the snow..

@Danu I looked at all that. I could only guess that the server maintenance has something to do with the snow.

so basically everybody got all edgy about an oncoming snow storm that turned out to not really be all that?

user54412
@TAbraham Central New Jersey, an hour out of NYC.

10:59 PM
@DavidZ hmmm... ok?? :P

because the alternative is that it has nothing to do with the snow, and then I have no guess

fair enough ;)

user54412
dinner time

cya
I'm going to bed
