Q: Correct spaces for quantum mechanics

Daniel Robert-NicoudThe general formulation of quantum mechanics is done by describing quantum mechanical states by vectors $|\psi_t(x)\rangle$ in some Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and describes their time evolution by the Schrödinger equation $$i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}|\psi_t\rangle = H|\psi_t\rangle$$ wher...

Q: FAQ questions (on the main site)

Dimension10There are many questions which should be faq on the main site in my opinion. So I'm starting this meta post to vote on questions which could become faq.

@CrazyBuddy you applied to be a mod? :O

@RhysW Nah... I just downvoted his... ;-)

@CrazyBuddy ahh xD
you should apply anyway ;)

@RhysW What? me..? o.O

@CrazyBuddy sure, we need mods that are crazy dont we? :P

1) I'm not much involved in Space.SE (not that I don't like it...) not too much involvement :)
2) Maybe, I'm not yet prepared to be a great mod :)

Q: More rep has changed than I can account for

WouterYesterday I had 1693 rep, but when I logged on today I had only 1689 left. I went in to see if I'd gotten any downvotes. There weren't any, but I did have a "post was removed" notice - I ticked the "show removed posts" box at the bottom of the page because I've come across this before (this and t...

Q: Outdated flag reasons.

Dimension10The flag reasons are outdated: http://physics.stackexchange.com/help/privileges/flag-posts. It still has "too localised" and others. Shouldn't it be updated? .

@ManishEarth this good answer to a very interesting technical question references one of Ron Maimon's exellent answer to another question. So it might well be that the OP of the first newer question has questions concerning Ron Maimon's answer to the second question.

Ron Maimon still answers to questions concerning his own text, but the second question is locked... So can the second question be onlocked such that Ron's answer can still be discussed from a physics point of view, if needed?

so?
@Dilaton the answers are not locked

Yo

'ello :)

2:07 PM
@ManishEarth hm, but it seems that I am not able to post a comment to Ron's answer for example?

oh
hmm
@Dilaton Create a chatroom, and I'll post a comment for you linking there.
I don't mind unlocking for short periods of time for edits, but not for comment discussions

BTW does the question has to be locked, in view of a possible reexamination of the book issue?

@Dilaton Until the policy changes, yes
@Dilaton Also that post doesn't follow the proposed policy, though that's easily fixed (especially since Ron's answer does follow it)

2:31 PM
@ManishEarth: Are ads counted for each IP address or just clicks..?

dunno. Probably clicks where each IP has one click

I mean, if I click 5 or 10 times, would that be counted as 5 or 10?

@CrazyBuddy probably 1

(just by me)
@ManishEarth Can you clarify that? (I mean, check that out?)

2:33 PM
@ManishEarth I'd better confirm before I report there... That's why...

@ManishEarth as the question is locked, nobody can edit to improve it either ... The issue of the path integral formulation of QM is narrowed down enough to follow your proposed policy, in the Antony Zee's "Quantum Field Theory in a Nutshell" it takes just about 10 pages to explain it.

I don't mind unlocking for short periods of time for edits, but not for comment discussions

@ManishEarth If I'd edit to improve it to see if it can be reopend, would you and the other moderators then let the community who can review the reopen queue decide?

No, because by current policy it's still off topic

@ManishEarth I meant strenghtening the focus on the physics issue ...

2:40 PM
@Dilaton Yeah, but currently radical edits aren't allowed
Sit tight, the post isn't going anywhere and when I get time I'll post a new meta post about the book policy
After some discussion
(First week after college started, bit short on time. Will level out in a week)

@ManishEarth so I hope it will not go to the Nirvana (getting deleted) either because of some very good and valuable answers...

user54412
@CrazyBuddy I swear sometimes my profile views go up whenever I click my profile (from the same IP), even though that's not supposed to happen

Q: How are community promotion ads counted?

Crazy BuddyI was checking the community promotion ad stats at Physics meta. I found that each click of mine counts in the Total clicks. I thought the total clicks is based on each IP address. But, it's not. I clicked 4 or 5 times from my computer and the total clicks (plus, the ratio) has increased by that...

@ChrisWhite Waaaht..? No... It can't be..! ;-)

2:56 PM
@ManishEarth I would really like it if the moderators could leave the reopen queue more allone to see, if a proposal to reopen a question attains enough community support instead of saying leave closed as soon as it appears therein. If the community likes questions to be open but the moderators do not, then there is rather something wrong with the policies as they are applied. I hope that your meta post will finally change the isssue of books for good at the end :-)

user54412
@ManishEarth I may have to make an account on Space Exploration eventually

user54412
someone has to correct all the lagrange point questions that come up :P

3:12 PM
@ChrisWhite Go on... You should :)

@Dilaton Again, if you don't like the policies, go to meta. And that's a pretty rough indicator really, on small sites like this. I do keep an eye on the queues at times and make note of controversial (conflicting cotes) stuff, though. So far not much has turned up aside from the books issue.

::sigh:: Practical experimental questions are under-served in our community. This

Q: GHz rate single photon counting

Rex KerrThe fluorescent lifetimes of molecules used in biological applications tend to be in the sub-ns to a few ns timescale (let's say 0.8-4). The most direct methods to measure lifetimes typically involve gating (either explicit or via time correlations). But this is horribly wasteful as information...

is a really good question and deserves a more complete answer then I have been able to supply.
There, I've added a bounty.

@dmckee Aargh... The day I've seen dmckee getting wonderingly amused by a question :)

@CrazyBuddy I'm a specialist, so there are many things I wonder about. It's just that I usually only mention them when there are related to my specialty. Like this one.
Or sometimes there are just wonderfully off the wall. Chris White asks some of those.

ahh...
@dmckee Duh.. He has just asked 2 or 3 :P

Um...so he has. I must have misremembered who asked the ones I'm thinking of. Looking...
Mark asked physics.stackexchange.com/questions/14695/…. That's a great question.

@dmckee Ohh... you've added a few to favorites :D

I really ought to start adding favs. A couple of days ago I found a question which I really liked but only half-read. And then I was looking for it but couldn't find it >.<

3:47 PM
@ManishEarth I don't use favorites at all... Because, I know that whenever I bookmark some stuff, I don't read it until it fills up to a 100 and finally, I delete everything :P
(That happened once)

Also, my roommate asked a question. A pretty good one too, we had a nice and lively discussion on it before he posted.

Here is one of Ben's that I liked: physics.stackexchange.com/questions/62619/…

($\mu$ is the coefficient of friction)
Find the tension of the string on the other side (the round thing is a fixed rod with friction but no rotation)

@JoeStavitsky It appears to be, yes
What's the deal with the ? after the equation for P?
Is it confused about "pa" rather than "Pa" as the units of pressure?
