12:15 AM
LOL :-D, I am obviously much worse than Ron, since they obviously tolerate or even accept him (rightly so) but they ban me after only 3 questions ...

Their real name policy doesn't bug me that much. Their desire to integrate with twitter / facebook does.

@BrandonEnright I have not twitter or facebook accound, I am very suspicious about these things ... Do you think the problem is indeed that they want to get real names?

Yeah my guess is that they only want real names and that is the reason. I'd take their request for you to change your name at face value.
And I don't have a Facebook account either (my twitter account is a placeholder).

I never give my real name away on internet sites. I have just seen that I have obtained at a real mail adress I have given them too, it say nothing more. So I have told them to delete my account and my questions ... :-/.

This is just about the only site I use my real name on.

12:42 AM
They would ban @user1504 too ... I rather let them kill me on Quora than giving my real name away.
Ok, goodnight

1:12 AM
@Nemo I'm on quora, but I'm known as Gregory Jacobs there.

@user1504 cool, is this your real name ;-)? Hm something has happend to my chat display name here, it should be Dilaton. It seems to be my Chemistry chat profile, I dont know why this is ...?

1:30 AM
Some facts are verifiable, some aren't.

@Manishearth Damn - Now, I don't know what to commit..! Ahh --> To Space Exploration :P
Etiquette is also closed. Isn't it?
@Manishearth: I'll try to post some questions today evening... Ya know --> our function ends today ;-)
@Gugg Ahh... I know that. But, it didn't look like a homework to me though.
But --> you can always respond as an edit-proposal too ;-)

2:13 AM
@user1504 ... :-D Maybe I'll retry it on Quora ...
Darn, I'd really like to have my chat profile back.

you look like Dilaton to me.

2:39 AM
@Dilaton Retry what?

@Dilaton fixed. Your parent user had changed to Chemistry, where your username was Nemo

1 hour later…
3:45 AM
Sometimes this happens, it's a strange quirk
Not hard to fix. Just open your chat profile and switch parent user
Or go to Chem.SE and rename yourself ;-)
@user1504 I probably can verify that ;-)
Yep, I can
'course there's no point of knowing anything, since I can't tell anyone

4 hours later…
7:42 AM
@Dilaton I'm surprised you got blocked on Quora because of your user name. I gave them my real name i.e. twistor59, so I didn't have that problem!

8:26 AM
Anyone have an answer?

Q: Apparent fallacy in Fisher-Irwin test

ManishearthFor a hypothesis $H_0\equiv p_1=p_2$ (for two Bernoulli distributions), we take a measurement and find that $X_1=i,X_2=j$, and we denote $k=i+j$ Now, to test $H_0$, the Fisher-Irwin test tells us to compute $$P_{H_0}(X_1=i|X_1+X_2=k)=\frac{\tbinom{n_1}{i}\tbinom{n_2}{k-i}}{\tbinom{n_1+n_2}{k}}$$...

1 hour later…
9:31 AM
@Manishearth thanks :-)
@twistor59 yeah, I thought that I saw other users with user names that are definitively not real names there too ... Maybe a very zealot admin that has no clue about theoretical physics thought imy

No, they have a Real Name policy
But they don't always find the fake ones

@twistor ... name is an insult :-P. Too bad ...
I tried to repost a question that got no answer here. But it was hardly even noted at Quora, it got neither an answer, nor a comment or a vote. So Quora seems to be the wrong place for such questions anyway. The only useful thing I got was a hint to lecture notes about the Virasoro algebra.
So it will probably be not that big a loss if they do as I requested after being blocked (obviously because their stupid real name policies) ...

9:50 AM
@Dilaton I promoted the question for you
It's a bit hard to get started on Quora. It's a more social place, so initially your posts may get ignored since they will show up in very few feeds.

Q: How can we suggest synonyms to tags?

exploringnetI have seen that tags have synonyms of it under it's description. How can I suggest a tag synonym?

@Manishearth thanks for the promotion and the edit :-). Well, by banning me they have efficiently solved my problem about getting started... Not a very welcoming attitude to new users they persue by killing them just after three questions ... I can now not even edit my own posts.

You can always use a fake name
One or two of my friends do that

Yeah, maybe I will try this... But a fake name that is boring enough to look like a real name is not cool. I like my real name Dilaton :-P. Not sure if they would unban me if I change it, maybe they are annoyed about my nice kitty picture I have over there too ...

2:40 PM
@Dilaton I have a mu over there as well, that's not minded

user54412
2:59 PM
@Manishearth It's confusing tests like that that drove me away from advanced stats

user54412
I was raised on the "write down Bayes Theorem. Okay, we're done" methodology, which really works quite well

@Manishearth Everytime we say something - this guy comes with a "?" :D
He doesn't even say - "Hey, or Hi, etc..." :P

user54412
Basically, any question in stats can and (imo) should be rephrased as "what's the probability of the dataset?" then everything is really simple

user54412
it only gets confusing when we start applying formulas named after obscure statisticians (which were derived from this principle anyway, but under various restrictive conditions)

user54412
3:07 PM
this has been the philosophy of all three of the instructors/mentors - a mathematician, an experimental physicist, and an observational astronomer - who taught me statistics

user54412
as a result I've never had to deal with F-I or K-S or any other hyphenated formula :P

user54412
Hi @Crazy

I'm really crazy now..!
What were you speaking about actually..? :P

user54412
Manish's question on cross-validated - see earlier in the chat

ah....

user54412
3:10 PM
basically I agree that those tests are confusing, and might very well be doing something wrong, which is why I gave up trying to learn them

Now, I'm okay ;-)
@ChrisWhite Okay... Did you see my comment..?

user54412
@CrazyBuddy on the star question? yep

@ChrisWhite Somehow I've managed to enter into cosmology & astronomy ;-)
Some book references and some video lectures...

user54412
I'm torn between saying it's speculative physics outside the scope of this site, and saying it's getting at something very deep in terms of operator theory

3:22 PM
@Manishearth hm I dont know what still the problem is with my account, seems they never reverse a ban on Quora, it is permanent right from the start :-/.. I am now Sebastian Schacher see, and I have mailed at the feedback and moderation adresses saying that I have responded to their request and put in my real name, etc ... And absolutely NOTHING happens, they dont reverse it. If am really pissed off :-/. They treat (new) users not nice at all

@Dilaton you have to wait a while I guess

user54412
@CrazyBuddy if you want approachable current developments in astro, you might be interested in astrobites.com

user54412
It's grad students summarizing the latest papers for an undergraduate audience

@ChrisWhite Cool... It'd be useful for me then..! book-marked it..!
And, I've finally got my broadband connection.. So, I can have a look at numerous things without sucking with my dialup :P
@ChrisWhite Well, I got my first introductory to parallaxes, HR diagram, etc.. through this guy:
His videos are very good for an introductory --> using a style similar to minute physics...
@ChrisWhite And btw, I thought of asking you... about telescopes..!

user54412
telescopes? well - i can probably say a lot about them :P

3:31 PM
that's why I spotted you...
Which telescopes do you work around..?
(as an astronomer)..!

@ChrisWhite ah, makes sense

user54412
@CrazyBuddy meaning for my job? (as opposed to just for fun?)

yep :P

user54412
for work I've used APO, Keck, and Palomar

user54412
though i'm more of a theorist than an observer

user54412
3:36 PM
my real goal is to do some small project using one of the many new telescopes in Chile - I've never been to the southern hemisphere, and the night sky is supposed to be awesome around the observatories

@Manishearth yeah, something else than wait I can not do obviously ... But I'v gotten the impression that the moderation there is very unfriendly or even hostile, it never occured to me that the administrators throw out new users (permanently?) for doing bysically not much wrong. And they do this without stating a warning or something before, I mean giving the change to adjust the issue. These admins are completely unfair at Quora.

@ChrisWhite I know.. That's why I also thought of mentioning when you transform into an astronomer..! :P
@ChrisWhite Hah...

@Manishearth it is really a wonder that Ron obviously manages to stay alive there ... :-D

I'm stuck with Celestia & Stellarium - sometimes with some online catalogues :P

user54412
@CrazyBuddy Are there astronomy clubs in India?

3:41 PM
@ChrisWhite Dunno about my country. But not around my state for sure...
except a few planetariums... which are quite old :(

user54412
Like just about anywhere in the US you can find small groups (usually 10-50 people) who get together with their personal telescopes for the occasional stargazing party, and they're all very welcoming of newcomers

user54412
i guess it's not really a thing in too many other places :(

@ChrisWhite Then, I'll have to wait a few years till I get there :P

user54412

user54412
At least a distinct possibility for the mid-Atlantic US and parts of northern Europe

3:54 PM
@ChrisWhite Visible for you..?
Damn.,.. The Earth should be tilted a little... I haven't seen any auroras, except the one in Wiki :P

user54412
@CrazyBuddy they're very rare outside the polar regions - there's never been one where I live, at least as long as I've been alive

user54412
on the other hand, equatorial regions see more of the sky over the course of the year

user54412
at the poles there's a whole half of the sky you never see

Actually, I don't know the map of US but, you're in US right..?

@Dilaton it's not permanent

user54412
3:59 PM
@Manishearth I'm not permanently in the US???

user54412
Is that a threat???

user54412
:P

:P The message reply didn't get inserted

user54412
@CrazyBuddy yep, right there (if that link works)

Ahh... No extra-terrestrials in the US :P
@ChrisWhite I saw that... What I'm suspicious is that, "Isn't the aurora visible to you sometimes? (atleast rarely)"??? ;-)

4:04 PM
@CrazyBuddy Not in NJ, no
Not even in massachusetts
I've seen the aurora though. From Maine
And in Canada

user54412
Yeah, you have to be a good 10 or 20 degrees further north than I am (+40) to have a good chance of seeing one

user54412
@Manishearth I'm jealous - I've never seen one

@Manishearth 2 times..? Ahh... crap :P

Maine wasn't so good

Q: What is the reason for this strange train sound on the Jubilee line?

ShyamI have been using the London Tube network for sometime now. I noticed a strange noise in just one of the lines (Jubilee line), which is distinctly absent in the others. The noise could be heard when the train is about to commence from a station. A sample could be heard from this Youtube video at ...

Off topic perhaps?

10:22 PM
@DavidZaslavsky I think questions asking for sounds produced by such complex man-made machines as a train are off-topic. Physical insights are better gained from simpler devices, like e.g. tuning forks, organ pipes, etc
