The last part "the mathematical wave becomes a real wave at the point where the screen is thus causing the pattern".
The correct is to say " the mathematical wave becomes a real new interaction with the atoms and molecules of the screen which display macroscopically its (mathematical wave's) reality. The reality part is a meta part. It is the density matrix that is the result of the interaction of the proton quantum mechanical "entity" with the atom and molecule "entities"
changing the macroscopic appearance of the screen,( plus the interaction of photons from the environment with the screen and our eyes, ....etc.) This is what we call "real". The macroscopic.

Q: How to best to correct a poorly asked question?

Patrick RitchieI asked this question: How to calculate the effect of the earth's magnetic field on a HZE particle? Which after some more research I realized is at best unclear and at worst unanswerable. At this point if I reform the question the existing answer won't make sense. Should I delete it and a...

Q: Who are "we", and what counts as a "question" in consistent histories?

KumarIf the preferred basis in quantum mechanics and/or choice of consistent histories in consistent histories is arbitrary, and can only be determined by the "questions we ask", just who exactly is this nebulous "we", and what counts or doesn't count as a "question"? This is a dead serious question....

What do you think of it?

Seems rather philosophical to me

@DavidZaslavsky close?
I can't think of a good enough closing comment :s

off-topic, like the flag I'd say

@DavidZaslavsky, I disagree with this question being off topic, philosophical or anything else closeworthy.
@Manishearth At least the question contained in the first sentence can and has been by Lumo reasonably and nicely answered by means of physics. He has even written a nice technical physics post about what consistant histories are, how they are mathematically and physically defined etc. Maybe I'll add a link to this TRF article in the comments.

Fro reading Lumo's derivation of the consistent histories, it rather seemed to me that they are somehow related to Feynman's path integrals, about what I asked here but got no answer so far ... :-/

@Manishearth It's philosophical but salvageable. There's a physics question in there somewhere, it just needs to be clarified imho.

Q: Contradicting answers on magnetic monopoles

SklivvzWe seem very undecided on main on whether magnetic monopole do, in fact, exist or not, or whether this question is settled at all. It doesn't seem correct to me that to such a basic EM question we would give different answers all the time. The answers on main should be uniform and clear — ...
