Q: Is the Init Action called on every page load

jasondavisWhen browsing this site and most other sites where I see examples of people using a Custom Post Type or Custom Taxonomy, they are often running there code to add this stuff with the init Action in Wordpress. I haven't looked at the Wordpress source code to really see what exactly this is doing b...

Not a real question?

US visa denied :(
@Rarst Dammit. Why?
@toscho 214b no reasons to return to home country
Ouch!
no wife, no kids, no slaving for the boss... sadly I am not surprised
@Rarst gutted :(
can you not get anyone to telecommute you?
08:19
yeah, expected it but still in a really foul mood... and $400 down the drain
@Rarst $400 to apply?
@Brady $175 express passport, $175 visa application, stuff (photo, consultation fee about documents, etc)
@Rarst so the consultation couldnt tell you it wasnt worth doing because they would deny it on the grounds they have given?
@Brady consultation said it's a coin flip
@Rarst meh
08:22
@Brady What do you think how Americans earn their money?
so is there any country you can visit?
@Brady any that I can visit without visa or to where I can get visa. this one was purely US issue
@toscho consultation was not embassy, third party. embassy doesn't bother :)
and the damn trip was getting paid for... I can't even think about it as saving bunch of money :)
08:44
second yearling badge! didn't know you can even get multiple :)
anu
anu
09:10
@Rarst that sucks.
@anu yep :(
sup boys n girls
i'm looking for some to manage recruitment for wordpress, but preferrably without the dependency on an outside recruiting site
Rebecca's session had finally expired so no girls... :)
which everything im coming across seems to be built on..
@Rarst sorry to hear about the Visa situation
09:23
@TomJNowell yep :(
09:43
@lkraav Approach an individual then?
10:24
anyone up?
n running

My webhost has got a scary vulnerability that they have chosen to ignore...
Basically one compromised website on the server can symlink to any of the other sites files and read the config files
are there any SVN clients that reliably work for OS X that don't cost a fortune?
@Brady run from there. that is not viable for multi-user server.
I really don't care if it has bells and whistles so long as i can checkout, commit, update, revert, I'm happy
and it has a UI
Cornerstone is driving me crazy
and that other one is superexpensive and no app store
@Rarst Well all my client sites are on a different server to all the others but still if one client site gets hacked...
All they need to do is disable symlinking functions in PHP
Who needs symlinking in shared hosting environment anyway?
@Brady it's not about symlinking, they should have no access whatsoever on user permissions level between accounts
10:54
nevermind i went and bought Versions anyway
@Rarst You can have the toughest permissions going but symlinking will get around it.
I think its to do with the way php/apache is setup on that server
I need to investigate this further before I talk anymore :)
@Brady yeah. PHP needs to run under user accounts for things to be properly isolated
@Rarst which I believe they do on this server.
well, no expert but something is sure screwed up there...
yeah Im gonna test things out on my VPS to get to the root of this.
But my VPS is setup with PHP-FPM/Nginx and each user/vhost runs its own pool of PHP workers
Yeah got a response from my webhost:
It breaks many sites. and we scan all the servers daily for such attacks.

You can disable this within your own sites, if you wish.

Thanks

........

PS on Holiday.
11:04
what kind of webhost has holidays?..
I sent it to the owner of the company direct
I got another response:
Now added to shared1.. hopefully no one will complain
I assume the host is saying that the symlink functions have been disabled on the server im on
that's why I hope PHP as service gets more cheap and mainstream... too many things to screw up in Apache stack :\
brady need some assistance bro
or Rarst if u can help
@booota busy with security issues of my own
@Brady: ok bro... thanks anyways
11:17
@Rarst don't use Apache ;)
or other server really...
Anyone played with the latest version of PHP where you can start it up as its own webserver>?
anyone if can help with this... urgent wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/64787/…
i will appreciate the help
@booota only so much one can do for appreciation ;)
12:09
are you nervous?
@Rarst How about a "let A. Rarst S. go to the U.S."-facebook campaign?

Q: What’s wrong with my question

NitzkiI don’t know what is so wrong about my question: How to change the order between... that I got a downvote for that. I’ve wrote to the Stack Exchange Team and they recommended me to ask about this action in the Meta Forum. Maybe someone could help me out? Thx! Best, Nitzki

12:24
If there is anything worse than my framework: other people’s frameworks.
12:39
@kaiser since when US gives a shit about campaigns? :)
@Rarst sopa?
Doubt you will get a big enough following though
@Brady RARSTA
@kaiser Got a ring to to :)
stop screwing with my handle. Siobhan, evil woman she is, wanted to me wear tshirt with unicorn and RARSTY at summit :)
@Rarst Siobhan is lovely, both online, and in person!
12:46
@TomJNowell now I wouldn't have a summit to know latter :\

2 hours later…
14:26
@Rarst I'm back .......
@marfarma yay :)
@Rarst That really sucks! After your sabbatical, maybe get a job with a company that also has a US presence, then you can get an L1 visa.
Nevermind - takes 3yrs to qualify
work visas are huge pain... and I don't really want job in US... especially at the moment :) I don't want job anywhere
@Rarst I was only thinking of how to get around the 'no reason to return' issue
3 years is far to long to invest, if that's your prime motivation
I'm just sorry my government is being such a jerkwad about this
not your fault :)
15:06
hey anyone know where i can add allowed filetypes to the Appearance>Editor in php?
15:37
@Alex it's good practice to disable the editor completely, it's a gaping security hole that encourages bad practices, like not using version control, developing on live servers, and making horrible horrible mistakes that take down the entire site, e.g. making a typo in functions.php
you would do best to start developing locally using M/X/L/WAMP
16:11
@TomJNowell totally agree.. I'm probably going to get torn a new orifice here, but personally I think the whole WP system encourages some of the worst coding practices and really needs a ground-up overhaul
blasphemer!
16:28
@Alex Couldn't agree more. The challenge WP presents with regard to configuration management / staging / migration is the biggest pain because of it.
Conflicting audiences - end user focus, or developer focus. Started with the first primary at the expense of the second. But things are getting better slowly.
I have hope for the future.
16:42
Someone forgot to link to my profile … or to read our license.
@toscho get used to that, people have no idea how to properly attribute SE
@Rarst people make no attempt, SE or not SE
This morning I mentioned a script from Scribu in my blog – and I set a link to his website too. I always do that, that’s just … polite.
17:02
@TomJNowell links to source are quite common, but SE wants more complex attribution (link to profile and stuff)
@toscho There is a credited link in the post to your answer, was that not there before?
...or must people also link to the profile?
Jeff Atwood on June 25, 2009

All the content contributed to Stack Overflow, Stack Overflow Meta, Server Fault, and Super User is cc-wiki (aka cc-by-sa) licensed, intended to be shared and remixed. We even provide all our data as a convenient data dump, seeded by us.

But our cc-wiki licensing, while intentionally permissive, does require attribution.

Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).

I thought it was pretty clear what “attribution” meant, but given the semi-scammy way the content is popping up in some seedier areas of the internet, maybe not: …

> Show the author names for every question and answer
> Hyperlink each author name directly back to their user profile page
Firstly, barely anyone would read the SE license for such purpose and secondly there should be a much more prominent note on Q&A threads that bring light to the situation of attribution.
The license wording, "...in the manner specified by the author or licensor..." is ambiguous despite being later clarified.
I agree though, out of common courtesy, I attribute the author by name if available in addition to business or domain etc.

@toscho Fixed now.

Anyone know of a working example/method for checking the availability of a username at registration? I could only find one plugin but it doesn't work.
@PolluxKhafra Like an ajax check for validation?
@marfarma for availability yes
@PolluxKhafra maybe this helps? stackoverflow.com/questions/3371787/…
basically google: wordpress ajax check username -- should work
@marfarma I had tried that but couldn't figure it out. Does that look like a proper method?
to get you what you need
20:01
Yeah I've been searching. I don't just come here anymore without searching for hours
@PolluxKhafra sorry - about that answer -- probably not the best approach - sorry.
Post it on WPSE and I'll see what I can do.
Ok thx. I bet a lot of people could use that.

21:20
anyone have a one-size-fits all sanitize input algorthm
I got about 200 settings I want to save using one sanitze function.. there seems to be a trillion 'sanitize_xyz' functions in wordpress...
just want something I can say sanitize_anything($junk) to and it will deal with it?
wordpress.org/search/sanitize --- thanks WP... make me write a hundred if/else conditions
@Alex WP data Validation and Sansitization functions are wrappers for PHP functions that for the purpose of making the aforementioned more streamlined and consistent with regards to the API. Regardless of what functions you choose to use, core or otherwise, there is no such thing as a sanitize_anything($args) because data is wide and varied in type, you could not possibly assume without knowing what you are dealing with upfront.
21:36
yer, I know theres not much point sanitizing a POST-ed file upload but ho hummm... just desperate to be lazy. gunna go back to my magicquotes_special_chars_stripsaleshes_goddammit() function... thanks @userabuser
Even if you have a lot of data/values, they should be fairly easy to sanitize with a few select functions from the API
22:07
@PolluxKhafra Where's my question? Anyway, here's some untested code to get you started: gist.github.com/3702479
@marfarma Oh haha sorry I thought you would have seen it in the feed here wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/64865/…
@marfarma I think there's a syntax error in the second function. I'm looking for it now.
semi colon after line $username = $_REQUEST['username']...Im trying this now.
@PolluxKhafra It's absolutely untested, so I'm sure there's more than one error. Especially since I don't run buddypress, I'm not able to test it.
@PolluxKhafra I'm going to kill the gist now - the code is posted as an answer on your question
@marfarma Ty very much
22:23
@PolluxKhafra the selector to isolate the username input field is specific to wordpress login.php and will probably be different on buddypress - so you'll have to change that first
this: 'body.login div#login form#loginform input#user_login'
everywhere it appears
@PolluxKhafra slideshare.net/ronalfy/wordpress-and-ajax -- has an ajax registration form as an example -- more complete than mine -- worth looking at
@marfarma Ok thx. Nothing is firing so far when the username is entered but I'm working on it. You can see a working example here. betafod.fameordie.com/register
22:38
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) http://betafod.fameordie.com/wp-content/themes/fod5.9beta/scripts/validate_login.js?ver=3.4.2
Uncaught ReferenceError: _trackEvent is not defined
@TomJNowell fixed the link
OK: The selector is 'input#signup_username'
replace 'body.login div#login form#loginform input#user_login' with that
@PolluxKhafra nope, still errors
and now with a warning! Resource interpreted as Script but transferred with MIME type text/plain: "http://jqueryrotate.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jQueryRotate3.js?ver=3.4.2".
What are the errors? Past them on a gist, if too long
already posted them in chat look up
22:43
One sec I don't have the script called correctly.
I'm sorry, cause this is just getting to the fun part, but I have to head home. May check back tonight, otherwise back tomorrow.
@marfarma Ok thx! I'm sure everything you did is right.
@TomJNowell betafod.fameordie.com/register You see anything wrong here? The script is loaded in the footer. Not working though.
Uncaught ReferenceError: _trackEvent is not defined /register/:65
Uncaught TypeError: Object [object Object] has no method 'onblur'
all Im doing it is loading it in Chrome stable and bringing up the dev tools ( f12 )
the errors are in the console
Ahh ok just learned something lol
@PolluxKhafra you didn't know about the dev tools?! =o
22:57
@TomJNowell don't make fun of me =)
they make a massive difference esp were JS is concerned, everything from having a JS Debugger/profiler to seeing wether a border would look nice if it were a different shade of pink on a whim
Oh wait yeah I knew about those. I didn't know it showed erros. I just always use them to edit css and look at the source. Im a freakin noob
@PolluxKhafra yeah there's a step by step debugger and console in there
