@TomJNowell Fixed everything :) Search box, done! 404 pages, done!

@Rarst currently thinking about how to write a bot, that catches that guy :)
@kaiser I see the techie approach... I would try to get me fired and poison my career prospects at SE :D
09:39
@Rarst :D
@Rarst Honestly: Tell me, when you're free, as I got one highly interesting project for you.
@kaiser hopefully I will be some day... :)
Duplicate? OP claims it doesn't do what he wants, but I think it does...

Q: secondary navigation displaying current-menu items based on wp_nav structure

CarlosI have been using the wp_list_pages to display the current page and the other elements that are a part of the navigation structure. This works great, as we all know, but is based on the page heirarchy. I have been trying to figure out how to do this based on the WP Menu functionality (menu order ...

10:02
@AahanKrish I shall inspect
your searchbox is broken in chrome
or rather visually its positioning is off
it's not level with the rest of the top bar and it's wedged up against the top
+1 to the meanwhile on whatthenerd
Recommendation: setup a test site and install the theme unit test content
@TomJNowell Yeah, that's among the plans (VM, test site, etc.)
should be easy enough to do locally
@TomJNowell Not for me: i.imgur.com/nYFzi.png
try refreshing the page?
10:07
ah fixed now
I did that before though lol
perhaps as well as latest posts
:D So, Tom finds nothing fishy this time?
you could do a popular/featured posts
aka the ones you want people to go to most
dont bother with the statistics bit until you have something to show off
hmm... I only wanted to fill the pages quickly...
@TomJNowell Thought that would give readers a feeling that we are open about how we are doing :P
then think up a statistic you can use for the moment

And the Standard Model survives another test - well done physicists
10:54
@anu not quite, standard model had a new boson shoved into it, after the insertion everybody proclaimed the standard model correct, after a long bought of them complaining it wasn't
Anyone have an idea why the following alerts `'Why you little..#$@$!'` no matter what;

		var choice = $('.type-select').val();

		$('.type-select').change(function() {

			if (choice = 'New Ad') {

			alert('Why you little..#$@$!');

			} else if (choice = 'Edit Ad') {

			alert('Doh!');

			}
		});
if choice ==
=
===
ok.. I didn't do ===, I tried == and = but thats not the equality operator, but let me try...
= is almost always assignment
anu
anu
@TomJNowell um what? The SM has incorporated something like the Higgs boson since the late 60s
11:02
@TomJNowell Thanks for your help, but good God it now simply alerts with Doh! no matter what (using === and the previous ==), me thinks something is terribly wrong with my select menu.
@userabuser You do it again else if (choice = 'Edit Ad') :)
what I see is happening, is that you're grabbing the selects value, then when the select changes, you're comparing its old value to predefined values in order to do something
this doesn't make much sense, as to trigger the 'change' event the value must change so choice would be out of date
@TomJNowell Correct... If select val == this, then do that... etc
so if the select is equal to Edit Ad, and you select New Ad, you'll get Dog! not the swearing
because the new value of the select is 'New Ad', but you're comparing against the initial value, not the current value
instead of choice try using `$(this).val()
@TomJNowell Sir, I thank you.
I did not know the select value, or rather did not think of the select value in that manner, so I output it to a test div so I could see its on goings along side my code and yes... she no change. Argh. Thanks for your help!
woh... Forgive my horrible use of English. Sleep deprived.
11:16
@userabuser where are you located?
At home
@userabuser If you can call 5 cardboard walls a home ;)

@kaiser 5? Try 4... (sun roof model)
@userabuser Some mungo stole roof again, right?
@kaiser But I do have fiber optic Internet though.. its was that or a regular house... I chose the fiber
@kaiser Kangaroo actually
11:21
@userabuser Dunno what Kangaroo is. Only read this name on t-shirts in tourist shops: »Mate, it's AUSTRIA! No! Kangaroos!« :)
not joking
hahaha
@userabuser You should start making T-Shirts with »Mate, it's AUSTRALIA! No! Mozart here!« ;)
lol .. thats actually quite funny, wonder has anyone done that? :)
11:27
just pass me 10% and it's ok :)
Make it 11% (taking exchange rate into account)
I'm generous like that
Guess we need to team up. What's your mail again?

@All Do we have some sort of javascript drop down or pop out in the WP admin UI?

anyone here know the filter name for adjusting max blog item display count per custom post type?
(off the top of their heads)
pre_get_posts
echo rand ( 1, 10000 );
@toscho What do you mean by "because people do not expect that they have to clean up the field before they can actually type something into it." ??
The field is cleared automatically, the first time. Test here: whatthenerd.com
12:42
@AahanKrish Usual steps to use a search field: 1. Focus. 2. Type. 3. Hit enter.
@toscho Yes. That's how it's working on my site. Tested? whatthenerd.com
@AahanKrish Why do you use JavaScript for problem where Javascript is not needed?
@AahanKrish Yes, tested. Didn’t work.
Okay, I'll redo it now
You know, some people disable JavaScript for some sites to get rid of ads. Or their browser has no (full) support. Or there was a network problem and the scripts are not delivered (fast enough).
> to get rid of ads.
I am starting to care less about these people who care less about why the ads are there in the first place :)
12:46
See also #16538 and #19579.
@AahanKrish :)
@toscho Yes, when I said "I'll redo it now" that's what was in my mind. Thanks though, I got to read some useful stuff
@Sisir You get it, right? ;-)
Those who hide the ads would not click them anyway. If you write just for adclickers your blog isn’t worth much.
@userabuser have some question about domain selection on keywords
@toscho It's a tech blog, and it makes my living (I mean it will). It's not like a blog about code/programming, where I write stuff from a personal-point-of-view.
12:52
@Sisir ok, be careful though we might get told off ;)
> If you write just for adclickers your blog isn’t worth much.
Yes, that blog is for making money. :) I also have a personal blog, which isn't that way.
And I disagree with that comment of yours.
@AahanKrish targeting blog posts with searched keywords with reliable info on your post helps people and also earns money :)
@userabuser yea :-/ need to get a room

@anu I took the blog down many many months ago. :D The problem was I needed to do 10-15 articles per day, and eversince I got a pup, I just couldn't.
It WAS on wwwery.com and I am relaunching the blog, this time on a different domain
@anu Looks like you find it unbelievable? really?
@AahanKrish you could always hire people to write. was it a tech blog?
@Sisir right.
@Sisir I was talking about my carelessness. I was 18, and I never had a pet. I was overwhelmed.
if you got a kitten that time. it would never happen that way :D
Got workers in the block again. Adding another door on the trashbin room. 4th time hit the main electric wires and crashed my pc... grrrrr.

@kaiser get an UPS
anu
anu
@AahanKrish it's not unbelievable - just very very hard, especially in a crowded field like tech news aggregation. I've done a fair amount of work consulting for blog networks in the UK, so have some appreciation of the difficulties in making money from blogging
No UPS. Don't want another big'n'heavy thing standing around.
@kaiser putting in under table makes it invisible and doesn't hurts
@anu 15 posts per day is a lot of work, considering you keep the quality in tact. Yes, it was extremely hard. And in order to even get there, you should know your way in — many do it wrong.
13:07
@anu things getting harder..
@kaiser that's crazy talking... easy to stuff away and much cheaper than burnt computer parts and lost work
@kaiser What? It's just a small box. less than half the size of a CPU
I mean, it probably depends on how long it can serve without power
(mine is 4 hrs and I have an inverter in place)
IDE gladly auto saves every second, so work isn't lost. PC is Lenovo and has small condensator and fuse built in, so parts and work aren't hurt. It just sucks that PC is restarting multiple times.
Sorry, really struggling with this... Its only outputting the Page, not the Posts in the Model custom post category, result here: lauralee-world.co.ukMike 39 mins ago

Q: What are the best practices for updating?

B SevenDon't want to do anything to take down my blog. Here are some upgrade-related questions: How often should Wordpress be updated? What is the best way to do it? How to know if there is a problem with plugins? When a new version of Wordpress comes out, we have no way of knowing if there is a probl...

Is this a constructive question? Best practices always smells like a list of things.

or something similar
OPINIONS!!!!!!
I suspect the orange on the last back may turn out different hues in different browsers but I'm not fussed on that, it'll be set before I pull them into an image format

@StephenHarris In your answer with the shared taxonomy, where are you using the $where?
@kaiser inside the $query right above GROUP BY
@StephenHarris So then the isn't used properly?
@kaiser how do you mean?
17:30
Ah, chat is back...
@StephenHarris Wanted to correct. When looking at the prepare() for $query, then there's no use for it, as $where was already prepare()-d.
prepare() basically is a mix of str_replace() with a preg_replace() and then a vsprintf() ... if I remember correctly.
@kaiser You're right the last prepare isn't necessary as either its hardcoded and safe or already prepared. Just habit :)
@StephenHarris Better be prepare()-d for any case. hinthint ZOMBIEAPOCALYPSE!
> tested, and it works for me
@kaiser I've just removed it now :P. Add added support for strings being sent to it rather than an array of CPTs.

@StephenHarris How about this one?
...ok. those are the only two questions I have open, that are worth any effort.
@kaiser That one might be interesting... I'll have a look in a bit. I've just found a better answer to my filter by terms by post types....
18:07
so, there's login, nicename, displayname, and nickname...4 places to put a name? |: having trouble finding a reference on the difference between these
or does it just depend on whatever the heck a theme decides to use?
need to steal a field for the identifier for some custom authentication code I'm working on...not sure which field I should steal
@RebeccaChernoff ...you ask tough questions
ask on main site? maybe someone just knows on top of their head, I rarely deal with users
seen some custom auth stuff that just uses the email field as its unique key for the custom authentication...but meh
mmkay, figured it was just my google-fu failing me (:
stupid questions in chat > stupid questions on site q:
@RebeccaChernoff why steal and not just add your own?
18:14
@RebeccaChernoff As Rarst said: Use a custom meta field, anything else may break after the next update.
hmm
I feel like using the user_login field would be more,hmm, "proper", because people won't be using that...but it's just going to be a number...so that being displayed anywhere would not be helpful
@RebeccaChernoff if I remember right login can't be changed, so that's the last I'd pick to mess with
and it should be unique, so user_login seems to make sense there
@Rarst well this shouldn't change. I'm replacing the authentication...people won't log in with user/pass
this about epic blogoverflow security meltdown? :)
>_<
maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe
18:17
there was a lot of facepalming in this room on that topic...
there's a lot more documentation/examples on custom authentication than when I looked months ago...so yeah, giving it a go
plus, the SE API wasn't at v2.0 when I last looked at doing this, so there was no authentication
@Rarst no doubt
Tell us when you got it going. Then we may reconsider a SE blog for our site. :D
you should really consider getting a pet WP pro for those blogs at some point...
@toscho damn, don't mention that. I feel worse about it by rach month passing...
so yeah, for you @Rarst, your network profile is stackexchange.com/users/475816/rarst, and your account id (from that url) is 475816...so the unique value that I want to use to check if a user exists or needs to be created is that
18:21
I don’t. We cannot make everything in parallel. Answer rate comes first.
putting that in meta seems weird since it is "essential"
@RebeccaChernoff does everyone have a network-wide profile now?
if you have a user id, you have a network profile...so only anonymous don't
been that way for a while
@RebeccaChernoff "meta" doesn't mean irrelevant, it means "whatever WP doesn't do natively" - in any serious site there would be much more stuff in meta than in native locations
I guess. That seems weird though.
If I put display name from the api into the user_login field, it may not be unique
account id is the only unique thing I have.
18:25
@RebeccaChernoff makes sense... if you going to let ONLY network login then it would make sense to use unique id for login indeed
Meta fields are used for roles and capabilities too, so it is essential. You cannot use the back end with a broken meta table.
@Rarst that was my line of thinking, aye...but would that field be displayed anywhere (admin pages, rss, public profiles, etc)? I mean, your account id isn't secret or anything, just meaningless and would rather see the display name
@toscho fair point (:
@RebeccaChernoff I think the one that goes to display is supposed to be display name, but really does depend on theme and such
Updated answer...

Stephen HarrisI'm afraid this isn't possible natively (yet?). See this trac: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18106 Similarly on the taxonomy admin page the post count reflects all post types. Q: URL with & without category

gregolinMy site is working fine with the /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure. But it works without /%category%/ too. Is this possible? Ex: http://www.mysite.com/sports/test-post and http://www.mysite.com/test-post And, of course, both must display the same page. Thanks.

Does anyone understand this question? I thought I did. If I reply to the comment of the OP, I'm afraid, it's going to kick-start yet another prolonged discussion.

@RebeccaChernoff - take a look at wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/8887/… - might be helpful
nice. I've been looking at ben.lobaugh.net/blog/7175/…
you touch on one thing I haven't gotten to yet...commenting is a whole new can of worms
anu
anu
@RebeccaChernof didn't really need to do anything special to deal with commenting, apart from requiring a user to be logged in to comment
19:15
I'm waffling on including user creation in this authentication setup. Sure, that reduces a barrier to someone wanting to contribute...but could also open it up to someone causing trouble with submitting drafts and such. Think having an admin add the user account will be better. Need to account for the multisite permissions there.
But commenting should be more open. Need to think about requiring users to be a registered user on the SE site...not sure how I feel about that.
@RebeccaChernoff A regular user is just a subcriber. Can comment but nothing else. Admins can change a user role to author.
Hmm, forgot about the subscriber role. Was thinking contributor was lowest.
So, there's 3 options for commenting then: 1) must be a registered user on the blog's main site and can auto-create as subscriber, 2) must be a registered user anywhere on the network and can auto-create as subscriber, 3) can be anyone, but allow authentication via the SE api for comments in addition to the free-form name/email fields
subscribers would make the user list in the dashboard a bit nastier
(the question of should anyone from the site be able to be auto-created as a contributor to submit drafts is still valid too >_<)
19:33
@RebeccaChernoff You have the user ID. Look at the rep. $rep > 2999 ? TRUE : FALSE.
that would exclude some of our existing writers, heh
was just an example
I know (:
this stuff is a lot better documented than when I looked at it months ago. the barrier now is design decisions, not "wtf WP?" (;
I don’t read docs. :)
20:05
wordpress is very hard to get into. huge learning curve...docs are necessary...but not always there (imo)
(if you're doing anything other than modifying existing stuff at least)
