@Darth_Vader from my POV answers that refer to a plugin are just usually bad because they almost never explain why the plugin is the answer and how to configure it to solve the question. Someone gave a list of 10 plugins, so he didn't even had one to recommend...
The answer that was not downvoted there cover like 10% of what a true answer should be.
lazy poorly researched questions many times lead to bad answers

hi. I'm very new to wordpress... I have to add a search into the blog, but the agency that developed it previously did something... The widget menu on the admin doesn't appear. and there is no search files/form in the project :X I'm kind in a dead end... as I don't have anything to show I didn't open a question =(
@Michel Have you tried contacting the agency?
12:35
@CoderSte not yet, as the task was "simple" they just pass it to me.
I don't think the widget menu has anything to do with a search
12:59
greetings
morning the dark one ;)
morning
@CoderSte how could I implement a search then? I spoke with my boss, the agency doesn't exist (this is why he gave me the task. I'm both php and c# senior, but... saying that i'm junior wp is being nice).
Do you have FTP access to the site?
I'm almost going for the hard mode (getting the fresh wp copy and try to get all the layout of the actual on this)
Yes I do
@Michel have you looked to see if anything exists in the functions.php
13:07
@Darth_Vader wp_content/themes/my_theme/functions.php right?
@Michel to make sure Im reading correctly. You're in the widgets area trying to get the search form to work but it isn't showing on the site?
Vader I think his problem is that he has no search.php and no search-form.php file which means the search function work for the sites
@CoderSte I think so too
From what I gathered is he check the project and no search files exist
@CoderSte Correct
13:08
I thought if the search file existed it would generate the search widget?
I added the search.php and searchform.php at wp_content/themes/my_theme/ but, nothing changed
and the widget menu still is not showing up
The search.php and searchform.php won't make Widgets show
But they will work ?
Take a read on this function to see if it can help you :) developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/get_search_form
ok =) thanks
13:11
You want the search form to display correct?
that gives me an idea for a search box..
@CoderSte Correct, all I need is to add the search input and it to work like it does in the default wp
Yeah the get_search_form() function will get the content inside the search-form.php which should be the search field and stuff and then search.php display the results
I added <?php get_search_form ( bool $echo = true ) ?> but it gave a fatal error (i think). I'm looking where can I enable the errors so I can know what happened
13:18
I think that in later releases you do not have a widget menu if you don't have a sidebar
the search form do not have to be in a theme, core supplies a default one
can't believe anyone will disable the search widget on purpose
@MarkKaplun I couldn't find any search call in any place :( Also, following your suggestion, how could I implement the search?
get_serch_form should work, wherever you place it
We are linking him to the same stuff xD
lol
didn't see that link
13:27
you know programmers, rushing to solve problems before reading the previous documentation ;)
;)
My worst habbit is trying to fix something that doesn't need fixing then causing me a lot more problems xD
been there
Not a good place to be ;)
@MarkKaplun never, lol
@CoderSte lol sounds like me
@Darth_Vader probably most developers xD for some reason we like to make things more of a challenge ;)
13:33
Ive been trying to learn about wp more by making custom items
@Darth_Vader I need the default. Not a custom one. But even so, I took a look, but I'm unable to call the searchform
what error do you get?
19 mins ago, by Michel
I added <?php get_search_form ( bool $echo = true ) ?> but it gave a fatal error (i think). I'm looking where can I enable the errors so I can know what happened
is this on a live site?
yes, but what is exactly the error
13:35
and here I'm, looking for the place to add errors
is there any way you can get the theme and load it locally?
@Darth_Vader yes (but it's not in english)
@Michel what do you mean its in english?
@Darth_Vader typo
search is WP is just is, it's hard to break. try example.com/?s=test for starters
widgets and templates are entirely optional for it
13:37
@Michel, so how do you know it is a fatal error? blank page?
get_search_form() should output default form and just work.
agree with rarst even though it's not in english you should still be able to follow the code
of course the gifted agency might have made a site that is fubar
to show errors enable WP_DEBUG constant in config
@Rarst blog.contadorx.com/?s=test it works (with an horrible layout, but works)
@Rarst isnt it bad to enable wp_debug on a live site?
13:40
it's bad to disable wp_debug ever. for live sites just log errors instead of showing.
I am skipping nuances for our cowboy coding session here :)
@MarkKaplun <html><body></body></html> this is the source code I just assumed that is a fatal error that is suppressed by code
@Rarst thanks going to add it to see
@Michel well, that's a start... you'll have to figure out what's up with template and why search form errors though
so it is not fatal fatal
13:41
@MarkKaplun why?
because you have valid html, meaning something went bad but code ended successfuly
I do actually see search form there (on ?s=test page), it's just under messed up header
I see a form with no method or action, if you can you should just make them fix things
@Rarst first things first, adding the search form to the page Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$echo' (T_VARIABLE) the line code: <?php get_search_form( bool $echo = true ) ?> I was thinking in just add a random form with a input and a submit, but I don't like to not to use things "already create" for it
you don't need bool $echo = true part
13:47
<?php get_search_form( $echo ) ?> show nothing
This $echo where it come from:
?
do you define $echo to something? just give it no parameters
no, wait...
yeah, true is default, just <?php get_search_form() ?>
Sorry for asking for such noob questions :X
Have to do something without time to read docs is not a nice place
worked
thanks guys
now I need to fix the layout =)
14:05
rarst is the white knight
Very WordPress-y: Connect two connectors.
LOL
it is a nice ad, but do they actually have answers?
14:38
@MarkKaplun looks to be fifty/fifty

so you guys playing with the WP API much? I wanted to dive into APIs but I'm gonna have to figure out how to create new fields to utilize what I want to pass in
Is it incorrect to ask a question and immediately answer it with a solution in hopes someone else will come along with something better / more efficient?
16:16
@Darth_Vader API as in what? most of WP dev is just using APIs...
@Howdy_McGee that's fine
@Howdy_McGee is fine, but you might want to note on Q that it's intended for self-answer if you don't post it like immediately
Gotcha. I'll ask the question and leave it hang for a bit. I have a solution but it's kind of lengthy... and uses output buffering :)
see above if you let it hang. if someone else sinks time into something you have solved they might not be happy about it.
Mmm good point.
16:21
just note it upfront that you already have a take on the answer, then it's fine. if someone chooses to work on it they are aware.
@Rarst looking to take a JSON feed and all its names and pass the entire contents to WP. Would completely by pass the need to allow authors into posts except for approval.
which API you mean?
PHP? REST?
after research I see WP API v2. So what Im debating is creating a PHP file to pull the other API into a folder then through a cron push into into WP with PHP
you don't need REST one for that
interesting.. sits down in front of the master, lol
do tell, please.. or recommend any documentation to go on a journey down the rabbit hole?
16:31
wp-cron > wp_remote_get() > wp_insert_post()
haven't heard of wp_remote_get(), going to look at the codex thanks
ha Tom McFarlin wrote a post on it too

Q: Is there a way to receive notifications from specific questions updates?

CapiedgeSometimes, there are questions that let you really curious about what will be the final solution (if there is finally a solution). And I wonder if there is any way to subscribe to that question, and receive updates as they happen. Thanks!

We've had like, 3 questions on the Hot Network Question list today - good day apparently :D
