Just following orders @Rarst (ps I have delete link incase you want to file a DMCA take down notice) ;)
00:19
@userabuser I'm sure they like Swedish Pippilotta Långstrump Hair styles on Norwegian WordCamps.
lol
@Rarst write a book on the "advanced" topics instead and self publish it on leanpub or similar, then profit.... seriously, if you write it, they will come.

@userabuser ahem
@TomJNowell sore throat?
cough cough
I don't know anybody who's started a book like that
nobody at all
not a single soul?
imagine if one of us had started such a project
I know you are taking the piss now...
03:06
the possibilities!
You'll make the cover of Forbes
@userabuser . <- catch that link
dreams of sushi
or unicorns :D
@kaiser I know all about that...
03:07
tries to remember this is not slack
@userabuser not advanced enough? :)
@kaiser Just because resource-x exists, does not and should not stop someone from distilling their own knowledge into their own <[mod edit: BLOG]>, whether its for profit or not.
Point is, Rarst has a wealth of knowledge, if a camp rejects his talk, I'd turn it into a book (fleshed out around other topics).
He doesn't have to of course, it is a suggestion.
sure, but I'm on Toms side here. writing a book/whatever doesn't necessarily help someone aside from having something to use in a fight against hers/his own boredom.
How do you figure?
Reactions on wptherightway on the one hand. Personal blogging experience and type of receptions on the published material on the other hand.
03:12
I think you may be selling yourself short...
The two articles with the most response in the "community": "Dear WordPress, Happy Birthday but Fuck You" and "LoopChat quotes"
Let me give you an example, Dayle Reese authored "Code Bright" - a book on Laravel, and self published on Leanpub and has sold over 4500 copies at last count at nearly $30 per copy which to date equates to over $130,000.00 USD (before fees). Ok, while Laravel is insanely popular and a book on DI might not garner 400+ pages the point is, the self pub industry is thriving in many disciplines and topics, WordPress is not an exception.
The two articles that had the most monetary value: "Google Maps in a Circle" and "Xdebug and other non compiled PHP extensions on CentOS" ... both not WP
Well, there are I don't know, but maybe 10 times more Laravel people out than WP people? And those actually read. If you want to target the WP community with a book, you will have write something about SEO or other urban myths - or publish a comic. :)
Yep and I bet you wrote a book titled: "Fuck You, WordPress" which had a lot of good information on how to become a killer awesome ninja woo WordPress developer you'd do pretty well for yourself.
wp the right way got into WC Norway though
03:17
Maybe I should do that. At least this is my most read WP article and the most upvoted quote in here :D
and Pull requests are always welcome =)
Can I change the title?
Point I'm trying to make is this, fuck the trolls in the community that think "you can't do this or achieve that" - because there are tonnes of new people coming into WordPress daily and many more who want to up their game and hustle. People buy courses, subscriptions and books - its about perceived value. Not everything needs to be a blog post.
wp the right way is a good open source contribution, it adds value because it distills information that may otherwise be hard to gain from a single resource and compiles it into just that - a single resource. If wp the right way were also a book, for a few dollars, guess what - it would sell... and Tom would bank coin off it. I'm just illustrating a point. It's not all doom and gloom...
Bank some coin is actually something I would sign. Not that @TomJNowell could buy a London flat from that money, but it would be good enough for some coffees teas for sure.
Perhaps it would
but it would also violate my conflict of interest terms in my contract
I'd need to discuss it with relevant people and get permission
having said that there's nothing stopping anyone from doing that
charging for printing and delivery of free content for those who want an actual copy
03:27
What license is it? GPL? MIT?
having said that though, it needs finishing
same license as stack exchange IIRC
ok
But it needs much more than finishing. Probably around 50 more pages :P
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Public License
The pages I have are fine they just need fleshing out rather than notes
And it needs all this meta stuff for users, posts, etc. and that in combination with media/attachment handling, etc. And writing that is a I-pull-my-hair-out job.
and a few more eyes to check things over
well put placeholders in
paraphrase notes so somebody else can expand it into prose
03:29
I try to push it by always linking to the JavaScript chapter. :)
anyway I need to sleep
And no, I'm not going to push notes in for that. Too much work :)
open a GH issue then =p
okok

xrstf/composer-php52 — PHP 5.2 Autoloading for Composer https://bitbucket.org/xrstf/composer-php52 h/t @CoenJacobs
is nice, plugins stuck on 5.2 because WordPress can move to Composer autoload seamlessly
@Rarst nice comment... slowly reducing bitbuckets userbase one developer at a time :)
Curiously are you still working on any 5.2 based projects?

@TomJNowell @StephenHarris English native speakers question: How can I summon the words prefix and suffix ? I need a decorator that does both and need to name it somehow. Thanks in advance.
that doesn't make a lot of sense
can you rephrase?
When you summon a word, you're usually talking about wizards and witches and magic
Oh, sorry :)
and the word is usually a non-english gibberish word like Abra kadabra or silencio
either that or you're using a phrase such as
"I struggled to summon up the words to explain it"
which is rare
I need something that replaces Suffix and Prefix. I have a PrefixSuffixMetaDecorator, which is looks stupid.
hmmm
a prefixer, prefixes things by adding a prefix
or a suffixer
17:10
i just got this out of curiosity http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-34UC97

highly recommended (not the specific model, but the 34" curved size, dell has one etc)
@TomJNowell I read (in German) it's an Affix ... but not sure about that
Affix?
To affix an object to something else
DIY comes to mind
An affix is a morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word. Affixes may be derivational, like English -ness and pre-, or inflectional, like English plural -s and past tense -ed. They are bound morphemes by definition; prefixes and suffixes may be separable affixes. Affixation is, thus, the linguistic process speakers use to form different words by adding morphemes (affixes) at the beginning (prefixation), the middle (infixation) or the end (suffixation) of words. == Positional categories of affixes == Affixes are divided into plenty of categories, depending on their position with...
Ikea, B&Q, hammers, nails
@kaiser affix means to attach - so in that sense it could be used.
17:11
AttachingMetaDecorator :D
SurroundingMetaDecorator?
@kaiser AffixMetaDecorator sounds better.
yeah, it does. :)
so what sort of Java are you writing that needs those? =]
@lkraav what's good about curved? I am thinking about adding 34" next time I update hardware (current doesn't do 3 displays)
@TomJNowell Not really Java, but I got a plugin that got half a pattern/architecture. It's actually some sort of ServiceDispatcher, but it's convenient to register stuff to hooks and use DI. Only problem is that it already got a lot of classes so I renamed this and that to actually know what I'm looking at in the Bootstrap file :P
17:15
@Rarst i can't really say anything smart specifically. my last main exp. is 27" flat 2560x1440. i wanted to try the curved, it does seem more natural to have this. this is the first day. but i'm just enjoying the image, the feel, the look, everything.
ok, you are at justifying price tag stage, let me know in couple of weeks :)
no, the price is mostly irrelevant, although you're right i wouldnt try it at 2K, not that rich yet
but i can justify 1K equipment value easily
there's also a limit to the human visual capability i think. i mean sizing this 2x as high would be just a huge lightbulb bombing you whole day..
regardless of the price
i like triple monitor due to the fact you can set brightness really low on the auxiliary monitor, for chats and helper shit
Thanks @TomJNowell @StephenHarris
no distraction
had you tried flux? color temperature adjustment works way better for me than brigthness
17:25
yep, redshift user. so i use both methods concurrently
but yeah, it's individual. some people def. less sensitive to high brightness
17:46
I don't set brightness to high, but flux makes it way more comfortable for me than any brightness adjustment either way
