A: Is it acceptable to make invidious comparisons and innuendoes?

BenBe Nice. Of course you can't compare people to Nazis and Paedophiles. That's outrageous. In no workplace would that be acceptable, and it's not acceptable on Workplace Stack Exchange either. Be careful what you write. English is not primarily a tool for expressing logical statements, and the lo...

I think that the ratio of upvotes to downvotes here fairly clearly reiterates the point that very few people believe that the OP has "created an... insinuation or implication". If I were to point out that Labour, The Greens, The Conservatives and the BNP are all on the Left / Right political scale, would you accuse me of comparing the BNP to Labour?

Ben
@Tim Indeed I thought this was a very easy question. Does it violate the "be nice" policy to compare people to paedophiles and Nazis? But apparently it's fine according to everyone including the moderators and you. I mean, there's a line, and Nazis are clearly over the line. But people might disagree about whether you are over that line, especially if they haven't met you. That's fine to say according to the moderators and you. Clearly I was wrong and this is fine to say, after all I made it clear you aren't a Nazi. Mentioning you in the same paragraph for no good reason has no implications.
That was sarcasm, by the way.
@tim the OP certainly is comparing the DM to Nazis. she is comparing them, and saying which is worse - Nazis are worse. That is comparing. This is not a hard concept. She is not saying they are the same, but she is comparing them.

Tim
Sorry I've deleted that comment - I missed the edit window. Here's the edited version: "Does it violate the "be nice" policy to compare people to paedophiles and Nazis?" - the answer to that is a resounding no. "most people are nicer than Nazis" is a direct comparison and is allowed on this site. The real question is "Is the OP equating Nazis and the Daily Mail?" and you have said yourself that the OP is not equating them you admit the OP is "saying which is worse - Nazis are worse". That's not the opposite of equating (negating), and there's nothing wrong with it.

Ben
@tim I didn't suggest she was equating I asked whether a gratuitous comparison was wrong. It is. Of course it is.

Tim
Of course there’s nothing wrong with a comparison. What about comparison is against the “Be Nice”?

Ben

@tim Making a comparison can carry the implication that there is some open question about how similar the things are, or else why bring it up? You know that. Everybody knows that. 🙄

Tim
That’s the whole point of a comparison.

Ben
Yes. Exactly. Comparing Daily Mail readers to Paedophiles is done to raise the question of whether Daily Mail readers are like paedophiles. That's not nice.
This is *obviously* true. Such a comparison *obviously* violates any rule to "be nice".

Moderators aren't applying the rule because they just don't want to. They think the "Be Nice" rule only applies to people they like, and they don't like Daly Mail readers.

Tim
There’s no implication here - the OP is comparing the Daily Mail with Nazis. The whole point of a comparison is to question how similar two things are. Comparing two things does not suggest they are similar.

Ben
Of course it does.

Tim
No it does not - it suggests a relationship, but not similarity. The relationship here being a partisan scale.
a < b does not mean a is close to b. All you know is a is less than b. a might be 1 less or 1 million less.

Ben
9:35 PM
The implication is that they are close or why bother comparing them.
Everybody knows this.

Tim
Why bother comparing them? The OP has explained this! Have you read the other comments?

Ben
I have read every single comment.

Tim
Heck, the OP compared the Daily Mail to Communists, Nazis and Peadophiles.
You can't say that the comparison implies the Daily Mail is close to Nazis and Communists because they are effectively opposites.

Ben
Tim they are all horrible. They have that in common. The implication is that the daily mail is horrible.

Tim
What?
No you were saying just seconds ago that it implies the DM is like Nazis, not that the DM is horrible. That's a very different statement to make.
"The implication is that they are close or why bother comparing them." - is the DM close to both communists and Nazis? No. So that's not the point of the comparison.

Ben
9:40 PM
Nazis are evil. Communists are evil. Paedophiles are evil. They have that in common.

Tim
Yes, they're all extremes. But somewhere in that range of extremes between evil and not evil is the DM.
The comparison is there to point out that there are publications which would not be allowed in the workplace.

Ben
You are not arguing honestly. You are just practicing your debating skills and I am not going to spend any more time helping you do that.
Goodby.

Tim
What?!
Arguing honestly?
You changed from "Op is saying DM is like Nazis" to "OP is saying DM is evil". I've not changed my arguments here lol.
