Ok so at school there has never been any link lights on the hub, but at home you did get link lights when you connected your two home pcs, is that right?
Lets not rely on checking the colours (though I'm sure you've done that right) - the only test for whether a cable is working is to have it... working!
other issues even with the light correct can be the cores not in the plug correctly before crimpling, or of course failure/break in the cable somewhere between the two plugs.
What we need to do is take cables which we know have worked before with other devices. If possible, can you take the two cables you used at home and try them with the hub and 2 of the pcs at school?
I'm going to keep calling the device the "hub" as that's the term you've used, but once we get the link lights up, we'll figure out if it's a hub, switch or router.
**correction to "other issues even with the light correct ..." above - should say "other issues even with the *colours correct ..."
Alternatively is it possible for you to take the cables home and use them to connect your two home pcs?
It's all going to be slowly slowly, because from what you've said it doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong, but the only way to figure out what is getting in the way is this, step-by-step approach.
