@MadaraUchiha "Dong Ghost"...? Do I want to know?

@Eric Only one way to find out :D

@Eric yes you do

lol...
I'll check it out sometime.

Though every time I hear "I was walking home after school" gives me the creeps now.

@LoganM love that game

12:01 AM
Well folks, off to bed

@MadaraUchiha Woo. I will say this every day.
'Night. :P

Ciao

Got a 6 hour ride tomorrow, Yeepee!

Take your PSP. If you have one. Otherwise, sleep.

@Eric and a few battery packs, those things don't last long

12:03 AM
Yeah. :(

@LoganM I started writing an answer for the anime clube question but it would up being more of a "guide to anime-clubbing" answer compared to your's xD

Regarding the anime club question, here's my best attempt at an answer. I'm not sure if the question meets the Good Subjective requirements, and even if it does I'm not sure it's good for our site. What do you guys think?

@LoganM I like it. I think it's a very good subjective answer.

^ This.

It's so good, you deserve +50 for it

12:10 AM
Okay. I'm still getting the hang of the subjective thing. I understand it in principle, but it doesn't come into play on any of the other sites I frequent.
@Krazer If you have anything else to add, you should still add your answer. We're in need of more answers per question anyway, and besides that a good subjective question should be open to different answers from people with different experiences.

my tl;dr: Anime Club: It's all about being accepted and lowering degrees of separation.

yo

I used Genshiken as the model for my example

@Krazer I agree with that entirely. If you're making people feel unwelcome or you're not accepting new people, then there's no way you'll succeed at making a good club. My answer was more focused on the activities, but the sort of environment is at least as important for success.

I have to say, this is one of the things I really like about being on a beta site. Effort is actually given to improving and bettering the site, instead of casting close votes as a hobby.

12:20 AM
@user58512 hi

hello

@user58512 hello~

@Eric Yeah it was really strange to me that SO mod candidates were boasting about how many close votes they casted. You should be improving the questions, not closing them, if they're even remotely good IMO. But I guess SO has plenty of questions as-is without all the bad ones, so it's not as important to them.

I dont want to go to bed

@user58512 Sleep on the floor then.

12:22 AM
@LoganM Exactly. On a smaller site (even some of the graduated ones), it really matters what questions you keep and improve. It has to be a really bad question to be turned away. And I think we have a good open-minded and helpful community, too.

@user58512 I don't either... if I do I loose an hour tomorrow T_T

@Eric I think that's the whole reason why ELL exists, because ELU got rid of too much stuff. It'd be pretty amusing if ELL grew to be larger than ELU.

@LoganM Yeah, I think they got too many grammar profs that didn't want low-difficulty questions. And now I see how often ELL is making the multicollider, and I applaud them.

@Eric IMO ELU wants to be like MO for English, which is pretty stupid because there are probably only a dozen people in the world who would have any use for such a site. Just browsing the front page, there are about as many questions with negative vote totals as positive.

@LoganM Yeah. It's a bit sad, really.

12:31 AM
"Guy Builds Solar-Powered Death Ray In His Backyard"

@Eric They also have strange tastes when it comes to questions and answers. The top answer on this question is rather difficult to understand, while the 3rd most upvoted answer is IMO the most correct and easiest to understand. I much prefer ELL in that respect, and I'll probably use their site in the future even though I'm a native speaker.

@LoganM I had upvoted the 2nd and 3rd answers when I saw this question. The top answer is garbage.
I'd use ELL as well.

The top answer is cool, but it shouldn't be anywhere near the top answer. It is hard to understand, and so not a good answer by SE philosophy.

Yeah. It's cool in terms of reddit or something. Not a Q&A site, especially not one populated by grammar professionals.

@Krazer That's pretty cool. I suspect the reason why the physics guy wasn't as interested in it is because this is more cool in terms of engineering than physics.

12:45 AM
I find this while looking for mascot ideas:
skip to "worst mascots" for the lulz

Indeed, there were many lulz had, and not just at the worst ones. F-man is pretty lulzy based on the name alone.
Based on front page content, it might be a good time to start seeding lower-viewed shows again. My front page is about half grayed-out, and the only shows I'm ignoring are high-traffic things like Dragon Ball and Naruto.

Well, I'm watching Akira right now. But I doubt I'll be left with any questions.
We'll see.

1:05 AM
BTW if anyone wants to improve the % answered, the best thing is probably to read . 7 questions, 6 of which are unanswered, and presumably all of them can be answered, would push us up to 91% answered. I watched the 1st season of the show a few years ago, but I couldn't bring myself to keep watching it and I have no interest in reading it.

1:37 AM
@LoganM At least one of them isn't answerable.
Someone should also tell kuwaly to accept the answer he posted to his own question.

@Eric Not necessary. Just upvoting the answer will do.

@Mysticial Why not accept it? If he posted it, and it's correct, it should be the accepted answer. The same as for any question.

@Eric Oh. I was under the impression that it's an incomplete answer.

This one?
1
A: What is Yuuki's relation to Kaname?

kuwalyKaname is the founder of the Kuran family, and he was reawakened by Rido Kuran. After being reawakened, he was raised as the son of Haruka and Juri, who are Yuuki's parents. To summarize, Kaname is Yuuki's ancestor, though he was raised (after being reawakened) as her brother. Yuuki was also bor...

I don't think it's incomplete. I could be wrong.

But once any of the answers get upvoted, the question is "answered".

1:42 AM
For stats, you mean?

yeah

Ah, okay. Didn't know that.
Do you know what the "answer ratio" is? Logan and I couldn't figure it out.

I dunno. Nor am I concerned about it.

It bugs me since it's the only one I don't really get. Nothing I've tried has arrived at that number, lol.

2:05 AM
@Eric Judging by the answer ratios on other sites, it does seem to be somehow calculating the average number of answers per question. We shouldn't worry so much about the specifics, since we'd basically be gaming the statistics, which isn't a great idea. What we need to do is obvious-post more answers per questions.

@LoganM Yeah. Blame the mathematician in me for wanting to quantify the goal. xD

@Eric I want to know too, but it could be something extremely complicated, e.g. a weighted average of all questions with weights given by e^(-t/T) where t is the amount of time since the question was least active and T is some arbitrary amount of time. Or any other function of t you can think of. There are uncountably many such functions, and that only represents a small class of all the possible methods they could use, so I think it's best just to give up.

Probably. After I saw the multicollider formula I almost had a stroke.

Or it could be as simple as the only answers with upvotes.
@Eric The multicollider formula is broken. Period.
All sorts of stupid shit from SO get on there.

@Mysticial Yes, yes. But it's still complicated. :P
@Mysticial Like this one?
509
Q: Why does this code print "hello world"?

abcXYZI came across this piece of code, and found it rather interesting. The following print statement would print "hello world". Could anyone explain this? System.out.println(randomString(-229985452) + " " + randomString(-147909649)); And randomString() looks like this public static String randomS...

That question is the very definition of too localized.
But nope, +509.

2:11 AM
@Eric Yeah... But that's not the worst...
It did fairly well on r/programming.

The worst equation I ever saw was something I wrote myself. I was designing a neural network to try to simulate gyrokinetic routines used in plasma physics as best as possible (these are the sorts of things that use hundreds of millions of CPU-hours, so you can't possibly do any sort of optimization based on the return data). I ended up writing a simulated annealing routine to evolve the weights, and the cost function was 4 pages front and back printed.

@LoganM Wow. With the exception of the 1+1=2 proof, that is the most absurd thing I've heard. :P

@LoganM nice...

The sad part is that it needed to be roughly that long to take everything into account. There are complicated reasons why, but essentially the issue is that there are certain symmetries that the output function needs to obey approximately. However, there are different ways in which this can be satisfied, in fact countably infinitely many such ways. I needed to be able to add a high cost to output functions which didn't respect that symmetry, but still allow for jumping between modes.
Of course, it could probably be shortened to a page or less, but at 4 pages it was easy enough to explain to my advisor why all the different steps were taking place.
Anyone know why am I only showing up with 4419 rep in chat now? I used to be 8k or so.

um...

2:22 AM
Still says 8240 for me.

Strange.

@Eric Try hard refresh
It shows 4419 for me.
...

Yup. 4419 now.
Thanks, Mysticial. Now it's messed up for me, too. :(

hold on, lemme expand my block to see my own number.
...
123
asd
96k So it's correct for me.

abc
def
ghi
jkl
Mine is fine also.
@LoganM It's incorrect on your SE profile, too.

2:30 AM
Switched to math as my parent site, and it only gives me my math rep. Here it's giving me my Anime rep + 504 more.

You have 4320 network rep without Anime, I think.
Which is closer.

Which still makes as much sense as putting your head in the oven.

@Mysticial @Eric are you guys getting just your SO rep, or total network rep?

@LoganM Total.

Definitely more than my SO rep.

2:32 AM
I have only 16,401 on SO.

87.4 +7.0 + 1.2

Figured it out. It's my rep on all my accounts with the same email address (which are also the ones on which Miki is my avatar).

So you changed your email on one of the accounts?

Anime + Area51 + Movies + RPG + Scifi gives the right number.

@LoganM Now the question: Why did this suddenly change?

2:36 AM
@Mysticial That was the only way I could figure out to put my gravatar on some sites and not others.

@LoganM Just upload your own image.

@Mysticial I can do that now, but I couldn't before. I'd also have to upload it on multiple sites, which is a pain.

Is it me or is the chat style sheet messed up?

@Krazer just you
I don't see anything wrong.

I keep seeing the default bubbles fave icon instead of the anime one

2:43 AM
Actually, now that I try it, the bigger problem is with my account names. If I change my email on a site, it seems to also change the name associated to the account. If I change the name on that site, it changes it on all sites with the same email.

hmm

3:19 AM
Is this user's profile picture not properly loading for anyone else?

@LoganM correct

@LoganM It loads fine for me.

the picture is not loading completely for me

It loads fine in chat for me, but on the profile page I don't get anything.

3:23 AM

Here's what I see:

Something is borked. Period.
:)

It's like this for me. Interesting. :D

I think this is a fairly new pic. I don't remember that it, but I do remember that user. I think I'd remember if the pic were the same.
Now the profile pic is working for me, as is chat.
Maybe it was a gravatar thing where some sizes got uploaded before other sizes. Hard to say.

3:52 AM
Now my network rep is being calculated properly again, despite me not changing anything. That is weird.

@LoganM Yup. Looks like it was maybe a caching glitch or something.

yea everything working again for me too

Something similar happened a couple of weeks ago for me. It setting everyone's rep to their Anime rep. I didn't point it out because it was in the middle of a conversation and it got fixed by the end of the conversation.

sporcle.com/games/5camp/… how well do you know your OPs?

@Krazer We can do the same with the gif room.
Have someone run down the list and see how many they recognize.

4:07 AM
@Mysticial if their browser survives

@Krazer I'll do this eventually. I've tried a couple games like it. The 90s ones will be hard for me. I've never watched some of them, and some of them I haven't watched for over 10 years.
Speaking of gif room, people are still uploading from photobucket and other limited bandwidth sites, and naturally we use up the bandwidth in a day or less. Should I just bin the dead ones when they pop up or leave them there?

@LoganM I'd say bin them. There's no chaos if they can't be viewed.

@LoganM Bin them when they die.
I try to imgur them now. But the ones over 2MB, I still hotlink.
I'm not sure how far Krazer is on converting all the old ones.

@Mysticial I reuploaded all my big ones at drop.pr. I don't think they have bandwidth limits, at least not that we'll reach easily.

@Mysticial it's a slow and painful process for my browser

4:16 AM
Should I bin the conversations also, or leave them?

@Krazer Yeah, I know what you mean.
@LoganM If they're short, leave them.

Oh look, it's @Deidara-senpai. That's my cue to go to bed! :D

I wish hand 100u/d

@Eric lol

@Eric lol :P

4:18 AM
See you guys. :)

cya

@Mysticial Will it let us bin the messages "N messages moved to /anime/bin"?

@LoganM No. I've tried it before on SO.
Not sure if mods can though.

Oh well.

But you can edit them.
So just replace it with another gif.

4:22 AM
I occasionally run into gifs with weird headers that imgur doesn't regognize

@Mysticial Presumably you can only edit it if you're a mod or it's your own post.

@Krazer I hit that once too.
@LoganM That's fine.
We have a pet mod here right? :P

lol

I'd just ignore it unless we have like 5 consecutive bin messages.

It would help if you bin the ones that need mirroring and I'll edit and move them back
lets just mirror the ones from photobucket or tinyurl atm

4:26 AM
good idea
And the unknown ones.
How far are you so far?
So I don't have to search from the beginning.

I finished the 6th

6th?
I also hope that we won't be spamming the moderator logs with these edits.

@Krazer So you want us to bin all the ones from photobucket and tinyurl or just the dead ones?

All the dead ones are already binned.
I've been binning them the whole time.
But I'll go back and bin all of mine that are not imgur.
... after I finish this episode.
... and provided there is no cliff-hanger
... like there has been for the last 5 episodes...

None of mine should need binning. They're all either imgur or drop.pr. I don't know what the caps are for the drop.pr ones, but the imgur ones should be uncapped.
@Mysticial What show are you watching?

4:31 AM
@LoganM From the new world.
I dropped it at 3. But then I heard good things about it later on.
So I got myself to rewatch it from the beginning.
And now I'm on ep6.
And it took me about 20 min. to DL all 23 episodes that are out. So I'm screwed tonight...

@Mysticial it's not bad, the ED is catchy

I didn't watch it. It seemed like something that had a lot of plot and not much moe.

@LoganM ahahaha

@LoganM all of the mentioned, you can keep the tumblr sources for now

Yeah, it's more plot than moe.

4:34 AM
the min.us ones are fine
tinypic and photobucket need to go

@Krazer did you ever get the script to just show the URL rather than the gif to work? I'd rather not have to click all 500+ links just to tell where they point to.

@LoganM sec testing it right now

@Krazer my comp is very bravely trying to load all the images at once. I cleared up as much memory as possible and closed all unnecessary processes. I'm still not sure it'll survive, but it's doing alright so far.

5:04 AM
I made it to where I started posting giant ones before my browser died. I probably could have made it past that with some drastic measures, but that one tab was using over 90% of my CPU and a ridiculous amount of memory so it'd be tricky.

@LoganM make a bookmark using this as the url and put it in your bookmark menu bar:
javascript:(function(){$(".ob-image a img").each(function(){var a=$(this);if(a.css('display')!=='none'){a.hide();var url=a.attr('src');a.after(url);}});}());
this should hide the all the embedded imgs and only show the url
works in FX and chrome

@Krazer Seems to work for me. Thanks
Which ones should I bin? Just the photobucket and tinypic ones, or all the ones that aren't from a host other than imgur, tumblr, drop.pr, and min.us?

@LoganM for your sanity and mine, just the tinypic and photobucket ones as they have noticeable limits

@Krazer Okay, I'm gonna start on that now.

@LoganM I'm releasing that code under the The Unicorn Software License. Let me know if you want any additional features.
I'm gonna finish the transcripts for the 6th and go lose my hour

5:17 AM
@Krazer right now (at least for me on Chrome) it's showing all of the links as "http://or.cdn.sstatic.net/chat/img/ajax-loader.gif. I have to mouseover and read the link text at the bottom of my browser window to get the actual link. If that can be fixed, it'd probably be an improvement.

hmm
@LoganM Fixed:
javascript:(function(){$(".ob-image a img").each(function(){var a=$(this);if(a.css('display')!=='none'){a.hide();var url=a.parent().attr('href');a.after(url);}});}());
the ajax loader icon appears when the gifs are partially loaded so I got the href of the anchor link instead of the src of the img tag

I just moved about half of them. I'm starting on the other half with the better script.

Finished moving other half, and checked there were no more photobucket or tinypic ones in the room right now. Your turn @Krazer (I don't envy you btw).

@LoganM lol
"the format is not supported" Dxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sadly some of those are actually quite relevant to the "conversation". At least a couple generated a comment, and a few more were contextually nice.

I can fix it but it involves manually saving the images

That's what I was doing already for my images. But it is quite a bit of work.

5:52 AM
oh I realized why some of these are over 2mb
I'll try to finish them up tomorrow

@Krazer No real rush. They're unlikely to hit the bandwidth caps in one day if they're in the bin. I don't think people go there very much. Most of the ones that hit the caps probably were already near them before we posted them anyway.

@JeffFerland try it now

6:43 AM
If anyone's interested. We're talking about that post here. (by talking we mean, trying to translate):
in Lounge<C++> on Stack Overflow Chat, 3 mins ago, by R. Martinho Fernandes
@Mysticial For clarity, "puta" is "bitch", and "mierda" is "shit".

7 hours later…
1:43 PM
@Mysticial i can translate that... is a spaniard raging

2:04 PM
This is a racist and disgusting site, where you get condemned and banned for no reason. where a gang of moderators of shit dedicate to impart their fucking justice and fuck everyone else.

4:15 PM
| demographic = Seinen | magazine = Magazine Z | first = July 1999 | last = October 2001 | volumes = 6 | volume_list = List of The Big O chapters }} is a Japanese animated television series created by director Kazuyoshi Katayama and designer Keiichi Sato for Sunrise Studios. The writing staff was assembled by the series' head writer, Chiaki J. Konaka who is known for his work in the Digimon season, Digimon Tamers. The story takes place forty years after a mysterious occurrence causes the residents of Paradigm City to lose their memories....
As soon as I see this, I think of Big O notation.

lool

@user58512 Hi. :P

sup :)

Not much. I don't want to go to school this week. :(

yeah

4:17 PM
I have a test and two assignments, so yeah. Not excited, lol.
Luckily, after that, until finals, it'll be easy.

that'sgood, just push on for the last bit!

Indeed. :3
You're also in school, right?

yeah
my revision period starts soon

Revision period?

yeah
lectures end and I have to memorize 1000 proofs

4:24 PM
1,000!?

I haven't actually counted yet :D

... lol

but .. a lot

Yeah, I don't have to do much memorization for my finals.

lucky..
I never had to before, so I don't know how itwill go

4:26 PM
I have to memorize some definitions of morality, some terms/concepts for Computer Security, and how to make parsing tables.
I make it sound easier than it is, but it's not raw memorization.

hmm parsing stuff sounds tricky, that's the sort of thing I'd really really want a reference book whie I do

Parsing tables are just... awful. I really don't get them yet.
Unless you study CompSci, tho, you'll never have to do them.

5:03 PM
@Eric Hey you are back and I am still here. :P

@Deidara-senpai Time for you to go to bed. :P

yeah, I guess so.

:(

I found the ELL stie quite interesting, so I was going through the questions there.

Pfft.
They are mere mortals compared to us.

5:05 PM
lol, or is it the other way?

We are gods.
All shall bow before the Anime & Manga SE.

The only stat where we beat them is the visits/day, They beat us on everything elae and have plenty of greens.
Oh I see, you meant it that way. ;)

Yup. :P

5:55 PM
now I want to watch prince of tennis

2 hours later…
8:13 PM
@LoganM Transfer complete. Thanks for your help.
How to tell where the rich ppl live:

1 hour later…
9:20 PM
The main site is so slow today. Somebody ask something.

It's pretty slow network-wide.

I only have questions with no known answers... like why Ichika can pilot an IS

@Krazer It's because he's actually a girl.

@LoganM that's... too convenient!

9:45 PM
@Krazer It's because they wanted to create a harem.
I think our bin is more of a meta.trillsandspills than a bin.
haha

ive been hitting random on reddit for 10 hours, today isnt a good day

10:01 PM
@user58512 any good hits?

no

@user58512 I recommend: reddit.com/r/tldr

If you go on /b/ instead of reddit, you'll probably find something interesting. And plenty of stuff that's terrifying.

heh

10:16 PM
im looking for easy math questions to answer on the MSE site fbeause thats kind of fun
listening to the radio
what are you doing

@user58512 If you want easy questions, go to the unanswered questions tab and look for homework ones that are a couple of months old. Many of them have comments which lead to an answer, but no answers.

@LoganM, I mean fun ones like this math.stackexchange.com/questions/326625/…
easy is just code for "i can actually do it"

10:32 PM
Here's one I asked about a year ago which might be easy. I don't know. It didn't get much attention.
2
Q: Existence of an entire function with algebraically independent derivatives

Logan MaingiLet $\mathbb{A}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$ in $\mathbb{C}$. A collection of functions $F=\lbrace f_i:X \rightarrow\mathbb{C}\rbrace$ is said to be algebraically independent over $\mathbb{Q}$ at $x \in X$ if the $f_i(x)$ are distinct, at most one of the $f_i(x)$ is algebraic and $ ...

that's really interesting.. I feel like someone could cleverly build example
I definitely can't though

The motivation for asking comes from the j-function. While it isn't entire, it does have the property that j(z), j'(z)/pi, and j''(z)/pi^2 are algebraically independent whenever exp(2 pi i z) is algebraic. But what I'm asking for is quite a bit different.

actually what about just summing a_i/(|i|!) x^i for all integers i, then you could pick the a_i to be lots of transcendental values that are additively independent using axiom of choice
wow that j function stuff is cool

That works at the origin. However, it's really hard to see what it does away from the origin. The trouble is that algebraic independence is a very strange condition analytically because $\mathbb{Q}$ is dense in $\mathbb{R}$.

I was thinking if you consider the additive "irrationality class" of a number alpha as alpha+Q (the set of alpha plus every rational) then pick each a_i from a different class you'd get a function whose values were in a different class than its derivatives etc.. but I just realized that's an infinite sum so it really does only work at the origin, oops!
we can't really say anything about it when its an infinite sum

10:52 PM
Personally I'm of the opinion that constructing an explicit example is probably very difficult, but proving that it's possible or impossible might be easier with functional analysis techniques. But admittedly, I don't even know where to begin thinking about the question, as it doesn't seem to be tied to any current field of research.

it' a very tough & interesting question - you could put a bounty on it so that people look at it again

I don't care enough about it to do so. Most of the questions I really care about are too specialized to ask at math.SE (as well as not really being on topic since they're more about quantum field theory than math).
I'm finding it a bit amusing that we seem to talk more about math here than on the Math chat. Maybe that's just me though.

haha

11:12 PM
@LoganM Me too. But math is fun, so it's okay. :P

sicherheitstacho.eu it takes real balls stupidity to expose SMB/NetBIOS over the Internet

I like how Russia has 2.5 times as many attacks as the next highest country.

That's one persistent Russian

@Krazer With lots of processing power.

@Krazer oh I foud a funny one now reddit.com/r/shittyHDR

Q/D seems to follow a 7-day cycle. Peaks on Friday, then drops over the weekend, then starts rising again.
Actually scratch that, it makes no sense. Since it's a 2-week average, that would mean we're improving on weekdays and decreasing on weekends. Which might be true, but I don't know how to interpret it.
Answer ratio we seem to have solidified at 1.5. That needs the most work of any of these stats IMO. The trends in all the other ones are good.

@LoganM I noticed the same. Yesterday, only around 6 questions were active. About the same today. On weekdays it's 10-17.

We did have a pretty poor day yesterday, but overall there aren't any big issues I see. Hopefully our traffic decreasing today was just a 1-time thing, but if it happens a couple more times this week we should start working on that.

@LoganM Traffic was slow network-wide for this entire weekend.

Agreed. I wasn't very active this weekend, nor last. So I'm part of the problem, too.

More so this weekend than usual.
It's easier to see this on SO where there's a lot more traffic.

@Eric What the data is telling us isn't that we're being more active on weekdays than on weekends, but that we're being more active on weekdays than we were 2 weeks ago and less active on weekends than 2 weeks ago.

Ah, yeah. The answer ratio does concern me, though. We haven't been up to 1.6 in ages.
24th of Feb was the last day we were above 1.5.

@Eric BTW your graphs have Feb 29 instead of March 1.

@LoganM lol. Blame JavaScript for not being year-aware. :P
I'll fix that up later.

@LoganM It's true we do better around mid-week

BTW the % answered drop today was because the software didn't update in time to take into account Jon's answer here. Our % answered shouldn't drop on a day in which all new questions were answered.
@Krazer Makes sense, but the data are mostly over a 2-week period so we can't conclude that from what we can see alone.
