Now that I've taken another look at r/pokemon. It's gonna be hard to get to the front page - let alone the top.
They allow comics and image submissions.
People tend to be quick to upvote stuff like images and rage-comics.
But we'll try anyway and see what happens.

Trying never hurts. One thing we could also do is find a hilarious image of pokemon-eating-related material
If such thing exists

If we're ever gonna get out of beta and avoid being shutdown, we'll need to do this.

@Eric Is the image in the original question not good enough?

@LoganM It's a good image for our site, yes. But for Reddit, something that makes people go "wtf?" would be fantastic. (I assume you can include images on Reddit, lol)

2:22 AM

@LoganM EXACTLY.

@Eric I feel like that might get us flamed to death, or it might be a big hit. I haven't seen any high-rating posts depicting violence against pokemon on r/pokemon.

Hmm. That's a good point.
Well, I won't pretend to be an expert on Reddit. Thought it was worth the suggestion, though. You guys who are more experienced in its ways can decide what you'll do in the end

Also, as far as I can tell, you can't control the thumbnail photo, which is the only picture associated to the post. For links it picks a picture automatically, and there's no way to embed pictures in the discussion.

Ahhh, then forget about it.

2:30 AM
I've only been on reddit once, the last time we submitted something there. I don't know anything about what works there.

Hey, me too! Do Mysticial or Krazer use it more?

I think they both use it occasionally. We used Krazer's account last time, which had quite a few posts, though maybe not any on r/pokemon.
I will concede that we could probably get a pretty long-lasting thread going on some 4chan boards with that image, and it would bring in a reasonable amount of traffic, but I'm sure it would quickly devolve into pics of pokemon cannibalism.

... Yikes. I'm not sure that's quite how we want people to see the site, now that you put it that way.

I think that's why we decided not to advertise on any 4chan boards. Which is probably a good idea. We could bring in some traffic from /a/, and maybe /jp/, but those are two boards that we don't really want people from since they're both somewhat troll-heavy. I use a few of the smaller Japanese culture boards, which are pretty good, but most of those wouldn't really look kindly to us posting ads there (e.g. /w/ and /c/).

Interesting. I mean, I can get not wanting to be an ad board, but isn't part of the 4chan culture about self-promotion?

2:44 AM
@LoganM We'll only resort to 4chan if it becomes clear that we're at risk of being shutdown.
Save that on-side kick for when it's absolutely needed.

@Eric 4chan is a very, very strange place.

I see, haha.
@Mysticial Do you have any idea what it takes to be shut down? ('Cuz I don't.) I mean, I've seen betas with over 800 days.

@Eric No, but we can probably get a clue by looking at the sites that DID get shutdown.

@Mysticial Apparently they shut down sites when they stop growing (and haven't surpassed the Area 51 statistics with sparkling rainbows).

@Mysticial They don't make them easy to find; you have to search for the name of the site. blog.stackoverflow.com/2012/04/when-a-site-grows-quiet lists 6 such sites, as well as a very rough approximation of the criteria they use (or at least, were using a year ago).

2:53 AM
It also helps if you put into SE's shoes.
Is this site going to generate ad revenue?
Is it worth maintaining it?
Is it setting a good example for SE?

Most of those sites had more traffic than we do. But we do have more questions per day than any of them by a lot (actually, we're doing quite well by network standards in that respect).

@LoganM Indeed, I'm impressed by that stat actually. I wish we could get answered back up to 91%+, though, and our visits over 500.

We can probably get a decent visits/day by playing off of reddit or - if necessary, 4chan. But it's not going to be sustainable.

Yeah, that's the worrisome part. I think to be sustainable we need questions people will Google. That's how I find most SO questions.
2

I have another idea...
This one is to draw in search engine traffic.

2:59 AM
Also SE did keep other sites, like Chess, Chemistry, SmugMug, and Poker, which don't really seem better than the ones they closed.
I get the feeling standards are a bit more lenient now than they were a year ago.

We need to ask questions about currently airing shows. And we need to ask them literally within hours of being aired.

@LoganM The first two seem decent, actually, in terms of user inflow. The other two, I wholeheartedly agree.

Because then people will google those questions, and end up here.

That's actually... a really good idea.
I get most of my anime second hand. (That is, through "unofficial uploads".)

Furthermore, we don't necessarily have to come up with them ourselves.

3:01 AM
@Mysticial I think that's what we're supposed to be aiming for. SE says "eventually 90% should be search engine traffic". Right now we're probably pretty close to 0%. If we managed to get to 90%, we'd be pretty far in the "Excellent" category.

We could potentially pull them from MAL threads.

@LoganM Indeed. This: google.com/search?hl=en&q=why+does+major+armstrong+sparkle ... we don't make page 1.
@Mysticial MAL?

My Anime List

Oh... Yeah, that's a possibility. It doesn't necessarily mean we'd get good answers, though, would it?

I don't particularly like the idea of stealing questions that way, but if it's the only way out - you'll need to play dirty.
@Eric Too early to call that. But I don't mind if a some speculative answers come in early. And in later episodes (when it is revealed), a real answer comes in.

3:04 AM
@Mysticial Chemistry is probably above us. Chess is probably comparable, or at least will be once we're the same age as them. We actually already have almost the same number of questions as Chess, but they've got a fantastic answer ratio and really good content.

I don't want to outright say we encourage speculation, though. There should be at least some evidentiary material behind it.

So the question is not constructive until the next episode comes out. I'm ok with that.

Our biggest problem is our # of users overall. When it comes to regularly active users we're alright, but in terms of total we're 2nd lowest in the network.

@LoganM We're also pretty young.
I think only 2 or 3 sites came out after us.

@Mysticial 3, and one of them is the site with fewer users than us. But we haven't even past Politics, which is very likely to be the first site they close if they start closing sites. I think the real problem is that while there are a lot of anime fans, most of them have never even heard of SE, and many of the people in the SE network who like anime are already here.
So we have to bring in a disproportionate number of users from outside the network, compared to the average tech proposal.

3:11 AM
@LoganM Anime is a finicky subject. Tech is largely Q&A, there's usually only one right answer. (And when there's not, it's not constructive.) Anime is much more suited to forums than strict Q&A, which makes this challenging.

I heard politics has other problems that we don't have.

@Eric The same could probably be said of all recreation and arts sites, but plenty of them are still ahead of us.

@LoganM True. I guess SciFi is a good example.

@Mysticial Yes. Politics is really having problems, like partisan voting, arguments leading to flaming, very low traffic, and very few questions being asked. It's just not a good fit for the SE network.
I was thinking about joining, but just browsing their meta was enough to convince me not to.
Amusingly, they also have the diversity problems we were having just a couple of weeks ago:
3
Q: How can we diversify the site?

gerritPresently, Politics SE has a very strong US bias. From counting country-based tags: united-states: 119 questions (european-union: 11 questions; not a country) uk: 7 questions russian-federation: 5 questions italy: 4 questions india france: 3 questions australia cuba finland mali nepal pakistan ...

Anyway, it's best not to think too much about the Politics site. If we start comparing ourselves to them we'll be rather proud of our accomplishments in roughly the same time, even though our position in the network is still somewhat in jeopardy.

We just have a traffic problem.
I think our content is pretty good.
Our rules are pretty much set.
We don't have any internal controversies.
Nor do we have disagreements among the mods/top users.

3:19 AM
I don't think we're in jeopardy just yet. We have a user problem, as Mysticial said, but we're only 63 days in. When we get to 200 and still have under 500 total users, I'll be worried.

@Eric If we're still under 500 users a month from now, I'd be in favor of pulling the 4chan trigger.

@Mysticial Agreed. It was an extreme example, to be honest, lol.

In terms of traffic, we're actually only 10th from the bottom (out of 99). 2 of those sites are younger than we are, but the rest have been around 4-13 months, twice as long as we have in the lowest cases. That's still bad, but not immediately close-worth.

@LoganM Where did you find this list?

3:24 AM
Thanks

I've been copying the data from there and our area51 page daily for the past few days because SE doesn't give us enough data access for my tastes. I intend to keep doing it at least until we hit 500 views per day.

The funny part is: That's exactly what the community mods don't want us to do since it helps us game the numbers.
But what they don't understand is that these numbers help us gauge how effective the different types of publicity things we do are.

yeah, I wish I'd been keeping this stuff in a spreadsheet.
We had a huge jump in visits/day last week.

@Eric You mean exactly 2 days ago? :P

@Mysticial ... maybe. :)
We went from around 190 to 270, which is impressive.

3:28 AM
@Eric That was our doing. :)
Unfortunately, it's not sustainable.

How much of it do you think is one-time traffic?

(this week) - (last week) - episilon

If only we had a statistician to determine epsilon for us.

@Eric Over the past 3 weeks, we jumped from 160 to 270 or so. Even going into Sunday we were already at like 230. It's also true that these are 2-week medians, so the most recent increases probably aren't even factored in yet.

@LoganM Yeah, I thought I remembered it gaining before the weekend. I knew I wasn't crazy. SO hasn't completely decimated my brain yet.

3:31 AM
It's entirely possible, though admittedly highly unlikely, that we're already over 500 views per day right now, in which case we'll know in about a week.
(or never if most of those people don't ever return)

Yeah, I do wish it would show "visits today". Like Google Analytics.

@Eric There are (I suspect) problems with that approach. Mostly that SE doesn't want their page view algorithm to be at all transparent. But we can conclude based on the fact that the 2-week median has increased every day that our traffic over the past few days is at least what the area51 stats show.

@LoganM That's true. And very encouraging.

@LoganM Their page-view algorithm - while not transparent is reverse engineerable.
They something along the lines of keeping a table of recently accessed IP addresses.

So if you just go by the area 51 numbers, as long as they are increasing every day, you won't overestimate the traffic that day. I could formalize this as a theorem, but there's not much point.

3:36 AM
If any page view matches anything in that table, then it doesn't count.
The only thing I'm not sure of is the exact amount of time before something is knocked off the table.
Furthermore, javascript must be enabled for a question view to count.

I would guess it's wiped daily at midnight, just like everything else.
@Mysticial Wait, what? Really?

But javascript is not necessary to count towards the publicity badges.
@Eric nope. It's definitely on the order of hours.

How can you be so sure?

Because I can revisit the same question in one day and see the page-view count increment after I refresh.

@Mysticial I get the feeling that if we successfully reverse-engineered their page view algorithm and exploited it to increase the apparent traffic on the site, they'd find out eventually.

3:38 AM
@LoganM We're not going to be able to exploit it anyway.
Nor am I trying to.
So every unique ip pouring in from reddit is a page-view.

@Mysticial We could maximize the page views per person per day, which might result in a 50% increase or something. It's hard to tell exactly how much we could exploit it unless we actually know the algorithm.
But if we needed that, we'd very likely be dead in the water anyway.

@LoganM It's not really gonna work since we only have N people who are active enough to trigger multiple page views in a single day.

@Mysticial True. But given that fact, I'm actually rather surprised by how much traffic we have, since I can't imagine there are a lot of people finding us randomly through searches at this point and we've only advertised on reddit recently.

Is there going to be another meeting this weekend?

@Eric Probably not. We don't have anything that needs to be discussed atm.
Speaking of page-views, there are a number of questions on SO that have averaged more than the entire Anime site...

3:49 AM
Such as?

@Mysticial copyright thing needs to get discussed eventually, but I guess that's not really urgent.

@LoganM oh right
I actually want to put that off until it actually becomes a problem.
I don't see how we can make a sensible decision now since we don't have any real cases to discuss.

@Mysticial We've actually had quite a few cases which were probably difficult to notice. One where a new user included some extraneous info was probably going to get edited out either way, but there have been a lot of other strange cases. Let me go find some.

At least I haven't noticed it yet. So that means it isn't that big of a deal... yet. :P

In this one, I originally used the translated name "Heartspan" which I found on wiki (I watched the show without subs so I only knew the Japanese name). Then Krazer pointed out that the name was made up by UTW. So I changed it to romaji, even though the fan translated name is the most common in English as far as I can tell:
6
Q: How did Araragi hide yōtō "Kokoro-Watari" inside his body?

Logan MIn the Nekomonogatari-Black anime, yōtō "Kokoro-Watari" (妖刀「心渡」, sometimes translated as demon sword "Heartspan") is shown with different lengths, but it always appears to be bigger than Araragi. The size changing isn't very noticeable unless you are actively checking, so it could just be due to ...

Maybe that had nothing to do with fansubs and the Japanese name is just better in general. I don't know, but I think there should be some sort of policy regarding these things.

3:59 AM
That's not a copyright issue.

@Mysticial The fansubs question was never a copyright issue. We were never going to allow direct links to fansubs or download sites.
But we've banned any discussion at all of fansubs, even when they are relevant. Just mentioning the name of a group that subtitles an anime doesn't violate anyone's copyright.

Here's a hypothetical question that I wouldn't see as a copyright issue:
What is "Morning Rescue"? Where did it come from?
The answer is obviously "gg-subs".

@Mysticial That's not terribly unusual for the secondary sites though
(The problem is that your statement is still true after you remove the SO outliers)

@LoganM Exactly.
@jkerian There aren't that many of them actually. It's a pretty smooth curve.
Lemme find that query.

finds Mystical to be an excellent SO-search engine

4:06 AM
The only outliers are the recent viral questions.
Throw those out since there hasn't been enough to "spread out" their initial viral spike.

@Mysticial Sorry I misread your comment. But I think that fansubs are relevant in a fairly broad sense to western anime fans. We banned discussion of them mostly to avoid legal issues, but after considering it I don't see how there would be any legal issues.

Banning direct links to them makes sense. Questions that ask specifically about a fansub group should also be avoided.
But if it just randomly comes up here and there (such as an answer) is probably fine.
Why is X called Y? Because Z fansub group screwed up the name...
no problem with that.

@Mysticial That's pretty much the position I'm in favor of, but I think it's not the approach we've been taking so far on the site.
Admittedly, I think we've been pretty inconsistent with respect to these issues, as they've only come up a couple of times.

We haven't set enough hard rules yet. So yeah, that's to be expected.
I think most would actually agree with this position so we can probably make a meta post about it.

@Mysticial Also, there's the issue of linking to things like fansub website forums, which may have well-written posts about translation issues and/or fan theories about unexplained plot points. I think that's a gray area.

4:14 AM
@LoganM I feel that's probably ok as far as copyright goes.
As long as you're not linking directly the download pages, it shows no intention to violate copyright.
Yeah, this will be the topic for the next discussion section. Whenever that will be.

@Mysticial I agree, but it's a pretty slippery slope. What if the fansub group puts the translation issues in their main release post? Then is it allowed? That would be directly linking to copyright-infringing material.

Then we should probably make a rule: "Show no intention to violate copyright."

@Mysticial The difficulty is that in some countries, even accidentally linking to copyright-infringing material is illegal, while in some it's perfectly allowed as long as you aren't the one providing the material directly.

@LoganM Then that's up to SE to decide.

Anyway I think this is something we should discuss as a whole once and then set a policy. Maybe after confirming with SE people that they are okay with what we decide.
@Mysticial That's what this discussion on scifi meta is about:
9
Q: Youtube usage policy

KeenWe now have the ability to embed Youtube clips. However, this opens up a new can of worms, or at least reopens an old can of worms. The Stack Exchange terms of service state: Subscriber represents, warrants and agrees that it will not contribute any Subscriber Content that (a) infringes, vi...

4:20 AM
@LoganM no answer from any SE employees...

And also several posts on meta.SO and on the blog. It isn't at all clear to me what the policy is, or even if there is a policy on this.

In other words, it wasn't something that bothered them enough to warrant an official answer.

Anyway I think this is a minor issue which will be hard to settle, so we should put it off for now. Wait until there's some demonstrable need and/or the scifi thread settles on an answer.

2 hours later…
6:17 AM
Isn't "Morning Rescue" that energy drink whose commercials came with a bunch of raws and gg simply didn't bother removing them from their releases? Mostly because those commercials were hilarious?

8 hours later…
2:33 PM
@JonLin You are correct. It's not a bad drink.

2:56 PM
@Krazer Is it still available? I had one and it was pretty good, but Jlist doesn't carry it any more.

3:44 PM
Are we seriously talking about where to get this drink?
lol
I believe it was discontinued after a while.
It enjoyed that spike of high-demand from Madoka/gg-subs for a few months and then it died.

@Mysticial I thought it was because of the earthquake that they stopped selling it. They couldn't get enough of the raw materials or something.
But that presumably has been fixed by now, so maybe it's available again.

I didn't hear the whole story. But what I heard at the time hinted at the drink not being good enough to remain viable.
Or it could be a combination of both.
Once the hype was over, they lost all the demand for it.

Though the link does say they don't plan to resume selling it. So I guess not after all.

1 hour later…
5:21 PM
@LoganM I had some while in Japan. I know some Korean markets sell it, but all the Japanese markets I've been to in the US seem to still sell them.

Yo
Alright, I'm submitting

@MadaraUchiha What are you submitting?

@Mysticial @Krazer
Pokemon question on /r/pokemon

@MadaraUchiha now is good

@MadaraUchiha 'kay

6:07 PM
Doesn't look like it's gonna work at all this time.
It's already off the "rising" list.
This subreddit has too many memes, rage comics and that kind of stuff for these things to get real chance of making it.

We made it to page 3, but now we're stuck on page 4. I don't think we'll make any traction on this site at all. It just isn't the kind of site that's interested in these sorts of things.

Next up: Clannad question on r/anime
Maybe I'll do that on the weekend.
In any case, we need to branch out to more than just reddit.
There's only so much we can do before we get called out for spamming.

4chan?

@MadaraUchiha We're gonna save that as the final desperate on-side kick should it become apparent that we're in risk of being closed down.

@Mysticial Personally I'd like to fix up that answer before we post it on reddit. It's missing some info and I think I can find quotes and images from the series to support the statements I'm making. But I won't be able to do that by this weekend, so if you want to post it by then I guess it's fine.

6:17 PM
@LoganM Ok, then we can wait a bit.
Alternatively, I can do Hansel and Gretel instead.
Hansel and Gretel only h as 60 views, and yet there's 8 upvotes on both Q and A.
That's one of the higher ratios I've seen on the site.
So that means it's probably good.

Given that we brought in a pretty good number of new users with the last reddit post (I count 6 active users in the past 5 days, and 30 total, which is pretty good), we might be better off waiting a couple of weeks before posting again. Let those new users get settled and earn some rep first. IMO it's more important at the moment to keep posting new questions and answering the unanswered old ones.
If we rush to post the few good questions we have, we'll run out quickly and it could have a negative effect on our reputation. So I'd say wait a while before posting. Once it's clear that we aren't bringing in new users again, or our traffic starts to stall, that's a good time to post. But as long as we're still showing signs of growing, I think it's fine to wait a couple of weeks between posts.

Good point.
Then we can wait a bit.
And see if we can move elsewhere.
As in: Let reddit rest a bit.
Don't post the same subreddit more than once every two weeks or so.
Anyways, got a bus and a flight to catch. laters

6:38 PM
@Mysticial You sure get around xD

@Krazer @MadaraUchiha I know that we're not supposed to cross-post. But if I found an old unanswered anime question on scifi that I don't know the answer to, and I want to ask here, is that cross-posting? In principle I probably should be trying to use their site to get the answer to the question, but our site is way better equipped to answer it and the question hasn't had any activity there for nearly a year.

@LoganM Link?

@LoganM It's worth a try

6:50 PM
Though honestly it's sort of a more hypothetical question. I think there are probably better examples.

Let's see if I can have them migrate it to us
If not, ask it. It's fine to cross-post if the question is old, and no answers is given.
I've asked
@Krazer, track that for a sec, I need to restart my computer

Migrating might work, but if we ask it here directly and then get a good answer we could post that answer over there too (linking back here) for more publicity.

@LoganM I think it was implied that it is "Hope," but I don't think it's explicitly mentioned. The five shards in Akt 24 are unnamed AFAIK.
@LoganM Looks like we should just leave a comment and see if the asker is still interested in his answer being answered

Q: How to migrate old questions to a new graduated site

Anna LearPreamble Since their introduction, migrations have been largely well received, but still cause some problems, typically in the area of folks migrating questions to sites they didn't understand or migrating subpar questions. One of the key guidelines for migrating questions (after "don't migrate...

7:05 PM
@Krazer can we even still migrate this question? I didn't realize before, but I thought SE put a cutoff at 60 days for migration recently.

@LoganM No, I believe we cannot. Keen directed us to the meta.
I find it funny that the link to the TuTu wiki answers his question

@Krazer Yeah I don't think that's the best example. It's easy to find the answer. I was just asking in principle whether or not it's allowed to cross-post an old unanswered question from scifi. If it is allowed, I'll find a better target before I do.

Q: Is it OK to cross-post an old, unanswered question?

Madara UchihaI've seen a question on a site I don't have an account on. The question was very interesting and it's also on-topic on this other site, where I am an active user on. The question is on-topic on both sites. Is it OK for me to post the same question (possibly with linking to the original) on the ...

Let's see

7:22 PM
@LoganM I believe they mention it in Akt 26, but I can't seem to find a clip of it from the legal channels
specifically is referred to as 希望の欠片

7:37 PM
@MadaraUchiha The two upvoted answers there say it's okay (as long as we cite appropriately), and I think that makes more sense than the other answer. Admittedly that only opens up 3 new questions, none of which are amazing, but I'll go and see if any of them are worth taking.

I'm tempted to ask production questions about anime like: What percentage of animation work is typically outsourced to overseas studios, like China and Korea?

@Krazer If you believe 2chan, 100%.

I've always wondered what the difference between 制作 and 製作 is, in the anime credits
I'm not sure if it is more appropriate for JLU or this SE

Anyway I think that's a hard question to answer because there's not much information, but it's not a bad one. You just have to be a little bit flexible with what is allowed in terms of an answer. Instead of "63% is outsourced", you'll probably get answers like "Studios X and Y are known to outsource background animation to Korea" etc.

the fact that both are pronounced as "seisaku" and refer to "production" is a bit confusing

7:49 PM
@Krazer I never realized that (I rarely read the credits), but have you ever seen both in the same credits? If you have, then that indicates that the two are not synonymous in an anime context, so I think it's a perfectly fine question here. JLU would probably accept the general question "what are the differences between 制作 and 製作", but maybe not if you're specifically asking about anime credits.

@LoganM Yeah, I assumed they do different things. It's usually in the opening credits, I believe.

8:05 PM
hey

Hello.

@Krazer given how long ago the reddit post was submitted, is it going well?

@JNat the r/anime one? It went okay.
The r/pokemon one, not so well.

@Krazer yeah, that was the one I meant

8:41 PM
75th atm I doubt we will get any more

@Krazer that's a shame

What I think we should to is start gathering opinions of what ppl think of the site so far and see what we might be missing or where we could improve.
We could ask ppl we know that they think of the site at first glance and why they might or might not be interested

@Krazer we should also invest a little bit more on FB and G+, IMO
@Krazer yeah, that's a good idea

WE should focus on one and then another so we don't spread ourselves too thin

@Krazer agreed

8:46 PM
If we can't be as popular as PB&J lets rebrands ourselves as something unique and interesting... like bananas and Nutella. :P

@Krazer XD

3 hours later…
11:54 PM
Can someone find a way to deal with the most recent edit of this question? It adds a lot of mostly unnecessary information and makes it very confusing what is being asked, even after there's an accepted answer.

RickThe ending of Mawaru Penguindrum had a lot of ambiguous symbolism.
