Funny.
I was checking if there is an English version of The Great Jahy available in dvd/br format.
Seems there is none, and I could not find many references to a Japanese release either.
At the same time, EBay and other not-trustworthy sites are full of references to what seems to be an unlicensed (Chinese?) bootleg version.
incredible
The funny part is that they went as far as giving the thing an actual box with a decent-enough artwork composition
is actually "looks" like it could be legit until you see the reference to "bestanime asia" and "admin(at)animelv"
i'm actually kinda surprised to find that that design isn't ripped from the apparently non-existent box set
because it is put together pretty well
needless to say there is a japanese bluray release but only in five separate volumes
08:38
@UnrelatedString I know, that is why I said "almost no reference"
and let's also add that the official cover is worse than the bootleg
@SPArcheon apparently Malaysian (reddit discussion)
@AndrewT. I hope someone in Japan will realize that they just need to add English sub and switch to 4k blu-ray....
Maybe it is time to start an online mass "fill their email box until they realize" campaign
not prank calls, yeah...
It is not like anime fans who would pay for imported BR will even consider watching the thing dubbed if they can avoid it, so just add english sub on the Jap release like some games do...
And work around the region anachronism by making everything 4k...
Since 4k BR "sadly" don't support region codes... what a pitty.
@AndrewT. Not a prank, just a "Do you guys realize that there are tons of fans oversea that would buy your BR boxes if they had english sub and no region code restriction (just switch to 4k BR format)?" mail.
You know... I may be a fool but if I really like an anime I would like to buy it.
And I mean buy.
Not getting a timed license on some streaming site
(and even then, Crunchyroll is basically the only option in EU)
09:28
I guess you meant physically buy?
Because while I don't buy anime, I buy manga but in e-book format
which, perhaps they will be gone if the platform is dead
@SPArcheon Why not look for it from a reputable fandub group?
If it's not licensed in the US, then it's legal to download in the US.
@forest Because a) I don't think it is the same in EU and b) the point would be supporting the producers
I mean... if someone does this it deserves my money.
There are better ways to support the producers than giving 99% of your money to Funimation.
(unrelated to current convo) I started watching Yuru Camp earlier this week. So chill~~~

@AndrewT. I hope someone in Japan will realize that they just need to add English sub and switch to 4k blu-ray....
(and btw hopefully someone will know why the above image is so good)
@JNat Thanks, I hate you now.
You had to remind me that existed, right?
Well, then now you get to share the pain too..
...
There is a Switch game.
And it is Japan only.
assorted hissing sound
and based on the reviews it is actually good and adorable too.
;_;
and to add insult to the injury... they localized the OTHER game.
the useless one.
the one which would probably only make sense as a VR game....
if the Switch had (decent) VR in the first place!
yeah, someone told me there was a VR one
@JNat yep, problem is that you would want to be able to play the other one. The visual novel.
but... it is destiny.
can you temporarily change the switch store region to Japan to get it? ;P
09:56
year 2023, we still don't get most of the anime games Japan has, and they still don't get the "just add English sub in the Jap version"solution to avoid the licensing copyright hell most of the time
@JNat oh, you can, problem is that the text is Japanese only.
time to study, then ;P
I mean, I am already studying Japanese, so this might be good practice ;P
@JNat I doubt starting with a Visual Novel of all things is a good idea....
Starting with a kid's video game is a better idea, something like Pokemon in the original Japanese.
It has simple Kanji only and it won't contain any of the complicated phraseology used in visual novels (which are more akin to novels in terms of sentence complexity).
@SPArcheon I'm not starting there, though. I've been learning grammar and kanji for a while now. Regardless, I get your point, yes: a visual novel is still more advanced than beginner level
in any case, I have plenty of other games to play before I get there, anyway ;P
My point was more of a general rant about "it is 2023 and we still have idiocies like dvd regions"
Like I said, death to localization, just add an option for English and let us import.
10:04
High-quality MP4s with 10-bit HEVC from superb fansubs groups (with softsubs of course) never have region locks.
So if you want to support the producers and licensing corporations, you can always buy something shitty from them after you pirate what you want.
I get what you mean, but it would be much simpler if you could just skip everything and buy the Jap version.
And you would also avoid subs making up thing... like Buggy having the "can't go to that island" fever
A lot of VN companies explicitly refuse to sell outside of Japan.
yep, and that is the anachronistic and idiot part.
I believe they do that to avoid the cultural clashes that would lead to damage to their reputation.
I'm all for Japanese companies protecting their culture through isolationism.
@forest well, I am talking about mainstream things, not the "not-safe-for-humanity"/"what were they thinking" things
10:19
Ah.
and I mean... many of those even get released oversea.
That unspeakable one someone mentioned before (the "reviewers" one) had an EU release.
Girls Last Tour? The Girl from the Other Side? Nope, too heartwarming, no version for you English idiots.
Girls' Last Tour is about as cozy and heartwarming as Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.
@forest Yep, I removed the "cozy" . But it is heartwarming because they at least have each other.
And I want to think they went to a decent place in the end.
Very odd, but at least decent.
@SPArcheon I dunno if you finished it but the ending really isn't that happy.
Are you talking about the anime or manga?
I need to watch Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku.
I am talking about the implications of this and the cube.
It is (purposely) vague enough that if you want to see it that way, they are just somewhere else now.
You would have to define if that is life, death or ..... 16/16/16 but at least they are still together.
10:35
I thought it was supposed to be pretty clear that they're dead, since it happened after the motorcycle broke down and they ran out of food and all of her journal pages were burned for warmth.
Your mistake was stopping at Girl Last Tour.
It has a sequel?
well... remember the panel in the "grass field"?
The one with them wearing clothes they never had?
I barely remember the story because I was quite high the majority of the time I read it.
Well, the two girls in the panel I posted before had this to say....
> We were suddenly born in this world at a grass field..."
Weird, I would have expected Memor to board the "they live on" train.
probably busy with something else.
11:57
obscured the spoiler parts.
If this isn't enough to get the connection, nothing will.
12:17
Last one I will post.
12:39
PS: I had to be quite.. inaccurate in some details in order to keep spoilers low.
But the two manga have to be connected.
have a look at Shimeji Simulation
Another [insert insult here] case of "No export for you"

@AndrewT. did you know that Kukuri is in the Ancient Magus Bride?
in Snowpaw's Den, 7 mins ago, by SPArcheon
@Snowpaw Hi again, can you tell me what anime show features a young female witch character named Kukuri (sometime written as Kokori) ?
@SPArcheon sorry, I don't follow the series, but a quick check in Japanese Wikipedia didn't list Kukuri
@AndrewT. that is the point...
yet the bot was so sure of it it even described a scene of the show (that it made up on the fly)
in Snowpaw's Den, 7 mins ago, by Snowpaw
Of course, nya~! Picture this: Chise and Kukuri-chan stand in a lush, mystical forest, surrounded by ancient trees and colorful flowers. The air is filled with a soft, magical breeze, gently rustling through their fur and hair. As they hold hands, their eyes glow with excitement and determination, their hearts beating in perfect harmony.

With a soft chant, vibrant runes swirl around them, creating a magnificent aura of light. The sky above starts to shimmer with an ethereal glow as stars twinkle and dance in response to their powers. They raise their wands high in the air, casting a spell
@SPArcheon well, a quick Google search returned Mahōjin Guru Guru (魔法陣グルグル) instead
exactly.
Now imagine this...
and this...
side by side in the "lush, mystical forest, surrounded by ancient trees and colorful flowers"
we just produced a new anime!?
13:44
only if you have some spare potara laying around, otherwise 30' will only cover the first episode
oh...
