I've used ram-bootable OS editions before and it seems like they load the entirety of the OS files it'll use into ram and you can just take out the usb and it'll live for as long at the pc is powered, so I'm wondering if you can do that sort of thing but for daily usage, and without having to worry about data loss
so I'm guessing you don't care much about ssd performance differences between top models
@Hakase I don't notice it unless I'm actually doing that 30GB copy into ram drive that I mentioned earlier. Then the difference between SATA3 SSD and NVMe is obvious.
ddr2 ram mang
That's actually not too bad. lol
I have 2 of these 128GB machines. One with a 960 EVO (SATA3) and the other a WD Black (NVMe). Both of them are my main machines.
how can the 4k q32 write to ram drive be slower than to ssd?
I presume the quality of the ram drive software matters.
00:05
what are you using
On my benchmark, it says about 10 GB/s. But the actual memory bandwidth of the system is upwards of 70 GB/s.
I'm using SoftPerfect RAM Disk.
If the ram disk was perfectly efficient, I'd expect around half of the 70 GB/s since it would need to copy to/from memory. So the bandwidth is consumed twice.
(just got another gpu driver crash wtf is going on today)
hmm I wonder if my cpu is a limiting factor for these tests
ok I'm switching my main ram drive software
gist.github.com/jeremybeavon/88e1102b001fef31daf10457a525e76c this says imdisk is second to worst (at least 2 years ago)
I'm seeing 8gb sticks of ram @3466mhz (HX434C19FW2/8) and there are also some mad 4600mhz sticks CMK16GX4M2F4600C19 but the price is equally mad
what maximum ram could I use daily with 8400?
4 x 16GB
00:20
I mean speed-wise
or does it not matter for pleb use cases
I'm not sure since I don't have any LGA1151 systems. But I'd probably guess anything above 4000 MT/s is gonna be hit-and-miss in terms of stability.
I don't see anything affordable beyond that 3466 stick anyways :p
I'm just wondering if the difference between say 3466 and 4000 is significant and worth overpaying a little
(beyond 4000 it's not a little anymore)
@Hakase Very unlikely outside of benchmarks. For my stuff, I need Skylake X with AVX512 to actually saturate memory bandwidth enough to where something like 3200 vs 3800 matters. (the latter of which was never stable)
You're better off getting the 3200 cl14 kits.
00:24
does the latency matter in home use cases?
more than bandwidth
I can see only BLE2C8G4D32BEEAK with cl15 at 3200mhz in one store
cl14 are 2400mhz and slower
any nice to have features on the mobo I should know about?
othewise I'll just pick some z370 board to fit 8400 and dat samsung 960/970 m.2 ssd
The 8400 isn't overclockable right?
So you won't need the mobos with the larger VRMs.
Do you care about RGB?
I don't like rgb I already have a usb rgb ambilight thing around my monitor and any other lighting messes it up
00:32
Most of the mobos with the same chipset are roughly the same. The main differences are:
- VRMs and VRM cooling capability
- RGB lighting
- M.2 slots
- BIOS OC options
ok so look out for better VRM and obviously m.2
@Hakase If you can't overclock, the VRMs aren't going to matter too much.
I guess they solved the IO noise in realtek audio in these last 10 years :p
so I picked this random-ass selection just to fit the main models and the estimated power usage is 200 watts
don't forget to wish your mother a happy Mother's Day today. if you haven't, get off chat and do it already!
it's 3:40 I'm not sure she'll appreciate it atm
also f me it's 3:40 :I
00:41
@Hakase The 1030 seems out of place. If you're seriously gonna go with that, make sure it's actually better than the integrated graphics.
I believe that CPU comes with a cooler. And if you can't overclock, there isn't much to gain with another cooler.
oh ok
… said I, and as I clicked on that link, my gpu driver crashed again
it's like it knows when I'm looking it up
but for reals it seems like firefox is fucking up its rendering stuff in the latest nightly
Do you have one of those fake Chinese GPUs that flash a BIOS from a higher model on a lower model and sell it as the higher model?
me personally, no I don't :p
also I don't think there's any lower card that looks like a 1030 which you could "upgrade" like that
the aluminium in its radiator alone would probably make it not worth the operation
00:45
Do you have already have the 1030?
yea
ah...
I had 9800gt before but it doesn't have dx11 and I really wanted to play dark souls 3
I wasn't sure it was gonna work at all
everything else is from 2009
ram is from 2010 iirc
here's a fun screenshot
I bought a tablet for reading manga
thought it's gonna be on constant charge like on an iv drip
nope
charge it once a month I guess
the "battery saving mode" is fucking lying btw
this is all in normal mode

wtf, win10 update nuked all dlls i've installed in system32 and corrupted my programs
Yeah, that's why I block updates.
They also wipe all your start menu stuff.
Basically what it does is create a completely new Windows folder and renames the old one.
So you're basically getting a new OS.
Gao
Gao
03:29
......
Gao
Gao
This is Winsanity
03:53
I basically sandbox everything before I try it. This includes Windows updates, compiler updates, other new software.
Because everything is ridiculous.
Gao
Gao
might as well run it in vm
04:45
@Gao you upgrade to 10 did you?
Oh hey chat is back.
In my sandbox machine, each of the 4 drives have their OS(s) installed. So I can basically test anything I want on it. As long as it's not a virus that affects the firmware or BIOS, nothing escapes each environment and everything can be easily wiped.

Q: What song is playing in episode 22 (s2ep10) of Tokyo Ghoul?

buntaIt's playing between 6:36 and 7:46. I've heard it multiple times in TG itself but couldn't find it on soundtrack, and many times elsewhere. I have a feeling it's somewhat popular

Gao
Gao
@Memor-X It came preinstalled on my work laptop. I just installed a major update last Friday.
Would be interested to learn your setup
@Gao hmmmmm, i had an update last week and i didn't have anything reset or that and the only time that happened when during the Windows 8 -> 10 upgrade
@Gao setup like how?
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X It removed HashCheck's context menu.
Setting up multiple sandboxed OSes for testing. I only know VMWare.
I'm probably doing this wrong, but I'd create and verify sha-512 checksums to make sure my backups haven't bit-rotted.
I've looked into MultiPar and ICE ECC but they're too slow.
06:12
@Gao I've tried using VMs in the past, but they were messy to setup and weren't close enough to native to be usable for my purposes.
Part of that is because I'm a terrible sysadmin and I have very little experience with VMs. In the end, it's easier for me to just put the different sandboxes on different physical drives.
Gao
Gao
06:31
So you use something like Hyper-V or just multi-boot?
All native. 4 hard drives mounted into 3 x 5.25 drive bays. Each with their own power button. So I can boot up the machine with any combination of hard drives turned on. In practice, I never turn on more than one drive at a time. So it'll boot into whichever drive I choose.
That's not the only sandbox I have. One my Skylake X machines has two SSDs which are unplugged. If I need to test something, I'll unplug the two main drives and plug in one of the SSDs. Since they're SSDs, reinstalling an OS is very fast.
But I need to open up the back to do this. So it's less convenient. So I only sandbox on the Skylake X box if I need to actually test something that can only be done on Skylake X. Or if it requires more than 32GB of memory.
Gao
Gao
06:49
Wow, this totally kicks ass.
Damn, laptops are inconvenient.
Yeah, I can't survive on just a laptop.

Q: Identification of an old anime "Eyes on forearm"

DesperateNowMore than 14 years ago, I use to watch some old anime on TV but I can't remember the name. Basically it was "like" Saint Seya, where the team of heroes would wear or more like transform into robots / armored fighter. There were quite around a dozen characters each with a specific transformation,...

09:10
@ToshinouKyouko morning, done any exploring yet?
10:03
@ToshinouKyouko oooooo, nice. was it a long trip?
10:15
@Memor-X it was about a 30minute drive to and same back
it's close enough to where i grew up
11:08
@Mysticial have you considered using LTS edition?
@ToshinouKyouko maid cafe hug of death
11:39
lol
@Abyx it's a common sentiment that of all marvel superhero movies, probably the only one worth something on its own is the first iron man
Gao
Gao
@Hakase Only available to enterprise.
And no feature update for 10 years is too much.
Microsoft is like the hare trying to race with multiple tortoises. It has created many technologies ahead of their time only to dump them for the next "big" thing, like getting ahead of a tortoise and looking in the other direction, sees it's falling behind another tortoise and race to it to catch up.
@Gao you installed things in system32?
Gao
Gao
If they started out with .Net Core when C# was first created, and ported Visual Studio and SQL Server to Linux earlier, the .Net stuff would be the most used technologies by now.
@Gao well, they are microsoft
so .NET Core 2 doesn't even work on any OS X older than 10.12 >_>
Gao
Gao
11:50
If .NET Core doesn't take off, .NET as a whole would be dead.
Even if it does take off, why would I want to use it? Golang beats it in the web arena, and no support for either of Winform, WPF or UWP is in sight.
Most nuget packages don't work on Core
everything about it is so fragmented. 3 GUI frameworks, 3 (or 4?) CLRs, none of which has a clear winner
which means all are equally bad
the only usable .NET languages are C# and VB.NET
IronPython, F#, etc just don't cut it
@Gao F# is that bad? (oh, on Core?)
Gao
Gao
:44576628 VB.NET, not VB. It has first class support.
@Gao it's still a BASIC dialect :P
Gao
Gao
@ASCII-only I've never used F#. It's not popular. I heard it's the .NET implementation of Ocaml, so still, how is it different or superior to the other functional programming languages?
@Gao Good point, maybe people just use it for the .NET interop? Who knows
12:03
@Gao do you really need these "features"?
and what features are there
Gao
Gao
@Hakase i don't know. the latest feature update brought this: Beta: use UTF-8 to support global languages
> As a result, it excludes Windows Store, most Cortana functionality, and most bundled apps (including Microsoft Edge).
I would prefer no cortana, no windows store and no edge
Gao
Gao
Yea they can go uninstall themselves for all I care.
problem is they reinstall themselves back with every major update from what I've read
Gao
Gao
Even OneDrive gets reinstalled.
12:07
mm-hmm
and I don't like what I'm reading about these frequent "major updates"
so I'd totally prefer not having them regularly
maybe I'll ask on superuser
Gao
Gao
Rolling release will be buggy, especially so without a QA department
I have a legitimate fear that if I post this on SU and it gets into hot questions, it might get picked up by reddit and get so popular that ms hears about it and tightens the screws on LTS and it'll be harder/impossible to get working on my pc
Gao
Gao
openSUSE just decided to export XTERM=xterm-256color and broke everything
@Gao F# is ocaml with batteries (.net library) and improved syntax (e.g. async/await).

So many aliases
@Gao they are the names of every single character she's voiced as when he takes on a new role she will become that character
wait, how can she voice Len in Carnival Phantasm, Len is a mute.
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X I don't think so. Take 苺原 コズエ for example, she's the CV for the character ひいらぎ あやこ in Walkure Romanze, so they're not character names.
I guess a lot of them are for H-Games.
@Gao i know, i was joking because she would have to be taking the identity of multiple characters in some series like Madoka how she is Mami, Tetsuya and Walpurgis. imagine someone in real life pretending to be all 3 of them at once
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X Probably one of the Lens who's not Black Len: youtube.com/watch?v=i_XA15FnQME
@Gao no because that list also lists White Len too so it's not listing Len as "all the Lens"
and the other non-canon Lens have separate names too similar to White Len
Gao
Gao
12:55
@Memor-X But the other Lens don't have a separate character profile on MAL
@Gao why, it uses .NET GC
@Gao they aught to. White Len has one
if they don't then maybe it is grouping all but White Len as Len

Hey guys o/ im new to the anime stack exchange, and i was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with some tailored suggestions for anime to watch. I have run out of the anime I like and now i am sad :( desperate for more
what genres do you like, which anime did you like most and wanna see something like
the anime I watch is: naruto (all variations), fairy tail, one piece, hunter x hunter, dragon ball, akame ga kill, blue exorcist, tokyo ghoul, a certain magical index, fate/stay and a few more
friendship conquers all!
anything with magic and action is great
so you watch everything I don't :p
T___T
I don't think I can provide good recommendations then but you should find plenty of stuff you might like on the corresponding titles' recommendations tabs
13:42
what kind of genres do you watch?
@TheHidden i take it you've seen A Certain Scientific Railgun and the other Fate titles like Fate/Zero?
also there is Kara no Kyoukai, it's another Type-Moon title like Fate/Stay Night yet less about Master/Servants and the Holy Grail
@Memor-X yes indeed I have, also watched bleach and the one about yato the dilvery god (which i forget the name of)
@TheHidden what about Fullmetal Alchemist?
yup :(
both versions
anime > social life
13:46
hmmmmm, how are you with Mecha?
not a huge fan tbh
I have also seen akatsuki no yona, that wasnt bad
oo
loking through mecha and this one seems ok en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Blade
hmm maybe
I suggest going down from the top rated titles
@TheHidden ok, a bit slow paced but maybe try Natsume's Book of Friends. it's about a boy who gets this book his grandmother wrote the names of Youkai which more or less makes them subservient to the book holder, the series follows his encounters with various Youkai, solving their problems and returning their names while also fighting back against Youkai and some Humans who want the book to control the Youkai who's names are in it
it's like 5-6 seasons long so if you do enjoy it you got something to watch for a while
action level is low since Natsume can't really fight himself
ok cool, il have a look at that and the top anime suggestions
cheers :D
Magic + Action i would suggest Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, a nice balance of magic action and friendship building
13:53
@TheHidden :D akatsuki no yona is really nice (although I haven't watched the anime yet)
@Memor-X ooo ok that sounds likeit could be a winner
@TheHidden Noragami
@ASCII-only I am too lazy to read but its a good anime! and yes!!! thats what it is called xD
@TheHidden Hmm. Would Boku no Hero Academia's superpowers qualify as magic
@ASCII-only yes! 100% :P
13:57
@asc I added your script version to our meta page
@TheHidden check out this script if you're using chat frequently github.com/somebody1234/star-thumn
@Hakase :D (although that's probably a bad idea since I abandon basically every project)
@TheHidden i havn't watched these yet so that it at face value but The Familiar of Zero and Shakugan no Shana would be magic + action
don't worry about that
mad's version had "in active development" text for years too
so, did anyone actually post any anime shorts during this week?
also: just realized i had a broken local version lol
we could collect them all into a list and pin it for everyone to check out
(if there is anything to collect)
13:59
also does anyone know if they will ever make fairy tail anime again? T___T
I've had this bookmarked for forever reddit.com/r/AnimeShortFilms/top/?sort=top&t=all
@Hakase how many anime shorts even exist
but never actually watched
I'm sure a lot
there's at least that short anime festival from which MeMeMe came out
I watched that whole bunch at least
also :D shelter definitely deserves that top spot
14:06
@ASCII-only just started watching boku no hero academia, seems to be good so far

@Mysticial do you know if win10 gives any performance benefits over win7? Or maybe there are some new features in 10 that you like enough over 7
I'm mostly staying on 7 coz I know how all the things I want work here, and I don't want to go through the learning period with 10
but maybe there's a good reason to switch
23:12
@Hakase HPC side, the task scheduler is a lot better than in Win7. But you won't notice for normal uses.
That doesn't make Win10 good by any way. It still lacks aero glass.
aero glass is maybe the second most important reason for me :p
23:31
I thought I've read something about new BIOSes not booting win7 and other older OSes but right now I can't find anything about how win7 doesn't work on x370 for example
@mys do you read any books "for programmers" or "about programming"?
if yes, is there something you could recommend
if not, why :D
@Hakase While I've never tried, I'm pretty sure trying to get Win7 to work on any of the newer systems will be a complete waste of time.
Since Microsoft actually tries makes it not work.
@Hakase no
huh? really? I've never heard about that
@Mysticial ok then, who do you think reads these kinds of books? :p
@Hakase If you do manage to get Win7 running on the new chips, they block updates saying that you should upgrade to Win10.
@Hakase other people? :)
I've been asked many times on interviews about "what books about programming I've read recently (as if I read them at all) and which I liked the most and why"
@Mysticial yea but I mean what sort of mindset or professional need to do that do they have, in your opinion
I'm just trying to learn more about these people through the lens of "outsiders"
and I wanna know what you think about that kinda literature
your question is very vague btw
23:38
@milleniumbug it's pretty broad but specific imo
@Hakase For me, programming is a hobby turned profession. But still a hobby.
@milleniumbug how do you understand my question and how would you rephrase it? :p
mm-hmm
same for me
no, I mean, there's a lot of books "for programmers", I guess "how do I do programming on a boat" would count too
@milleniumbug satellite wifi
lol my brain broke for a minute and I was trying to figure out how "boat wifi" works
23:43
user image

:O
in this image… the wifi… is the boat
IYAM, the books about a specific tool or language usually aren't very good, and only work if you aren't very experienced in that area
/_ethernet cable master race_\
@milleniumbug usually books are bloated AF with repetitive stuff just because that's how book publishing works in general
books about programming in general (style, guidelines, general ideas) don't age so badly, and are typically better, but after reading like 5 of them, you reach the point where you read a new book, and there's like 20 pages which were worth reading
23:46
@Taisho is that a white collar or is she holding dat piece of paper?
and the rest brought nothing new
guess I've read 5 books then :p
I don't read books because there's the internet.
I'd like to find some really insightful reads which would help me code my stuff faster/better but…
normally I just look how to solve my specific problems and find insightful answers from c# language designers and that's the best source there is
and sometimes they even answer my questions, and sometimes there is a bug in the interpreter :p
@Mysticial that's the one answer interviewers hate
@Hakase why?
23:50
I guess actively reading books is an indicator that as a professional I'm seeking growth, and answering like that gives me bad boi points
If that's why they're interviewing you for, then maybe you should question their judgement.
interview works both ways so for me that's an indicator that they at least don't know how to conduct an interview, or they're looking for a specific type of mindset in a candidate, and we're not a match for each other :p
To me, the internet is much more efficient and often better than books. You can easily search it. Books can contain errors that may not be obvious. An internet article that has feedback will often have people pointing out those errors. And the internet is searchable.
(still this is much better than "what types of programming do you know" pre-technical person interviews lol)
@Hakase Exactly. I've turned down offers because I didn't like what the company tried to pull on me.
23:53
I've found that book authors on purpose dilute the text to bloat the page count
@Hakase That's like half of all academic papers that I read.
that's why I dropped dat proposition to stay in the university after graduation like a hot ugly potato baby :p
Read the intro, scroll through 5 pages explaining a concept that everybody should already know. Find maybe 1 or 2 paragraphs of actual content. Then 3 more pages of benchmarks. A 1 page conclusion saying how they didn't really accomplish anything. And then 4 pages of citations.
free online "books" some developers have set up are a lot more to the point and frequently updated
books can't be updated lol
half expected her to have pink hair
