@Memor-X I'm not completely sure, but in 2013 he didn't seem adverse to steam, I think he would've taken it down by now if it was illegitimate, and even if not the fans would be in an outrage, so I think it's more likely to be legit than not.

@Memor-X I don't remember now. Originally it was only supposed to be distributed through the usual doujin channels. Originally, you had to import the games through Paletweb if you wanted to legally play them in the west.

Even then there were never official translations, and strictly speaking translation patches are still illegal (right of translation belongs to the author under the Berne Convention).

so my mum just picked up a bunch of anime, manga, games and comics that a guy was selling for his daughter for $80

the comics were mainly Batman including Under Red Hood, Batgirl and Red Robin. games were Final Fantasy X, Star Wars Bombad Racing and Arkham City

manga wise there were random volumes of Chrono Crusade and Bleach and the first volume of X

oh there was also a copy of New Type. not sure what release but it was talking about the Fullmetal Alchemist Movie, Conquer of Shambala (as it showed Al wearing Ed's coat and Ed in our world) and the cover had Gundam Seed Destiny on it and there was 2 Fullmetal Alchemist Art Books

@Gao yeh, downside is that the Chrono Crusade Manga is all bent so i packed up all up putting a whole lot of weight down onto them hopefully will flatten them back out

one of the Art Books was a bit bent too but it's a hard cover so not much i can do to repair it

I personally have my own opinion on physical copies, like if it's not fresh off the bookstore shelf, you shouldn't have it

both because thinking about someone else having it leaves an undesirable background thought, and because if you really like something so much that you want to have a physical copy, you should probably support the author by purchasing it

otherwise I'd live in a public library somewhere on the top shelves :p

@Taisho well the manga aren't complete so if i was to complete it i'd have to by the other volumes and if the Bleach DVDs are any indication chances are i'd have to re buy the manga anyway since they'd only be on Omnibus form now

but the art books were well worth it since i recall paying $50 for the Neptunia one i got from JBox

so even if i have to end up rebuying the manga i still got a bargin for the 2 Art Books

I've played only a couple JRPG-style games like that which didn't intend for you to play them forever and therefore didn't have the shitty watered down impersonal approach to these repeated battles

it means you're not using this game genre model to maximize profits, but to minimize boredom, which is not what corporations are interested in

it's really easy to forget why things aren't fun in games when all examples you have are from money-oriented companies

but yea, knowing the things I know now about what's fun in games, gives me hope that one day I'll be able to publish something decent

right now, in my "avoidance" state of mind, I'd say… I know it's gonna take fucking several years of daily work to make the game I want it to be

and knowing that I have to instead do other things like work for example being the biggest one, makes me feel bad coz I can't find that much free time to do that

and then the usuall "well, if you can't then relax and drop that dream" comes in, and it makes be sad coz I don't wanna just drop it

and everything gamedev-related reminds me of that

but then in addition to that, the worst kind of sucker punch: will I really enjoy the process and the end result of it as much as I think I will?

the doubt settles in and slowly eats away at the determination and bright hope

everything the "average" game developers do isn't worth pretty much anyone's time, it never crawls up from the bottom of app stores and steam's 50% positive ratings

it's not something you would ever recommend to anyone

I have an actually ambitious project and the advice they have for their audience doesn't suit me a lot of the time

I have to look up at the better developers and figure out what they do or have done to achieve the end result which I've loved so much

and most of the time our realities don't match up

I'm not a hard working machine who can just do 20-hour work shifts every day for 4 years

I don't have a posh budget to hire all the artists

I don't have the friendships and connections to secure fundings and expos for better marketing

I'm not active on social networks to promote it successfully that way

so many things, you know

it's really depressing, but then there are a couple indie examples where the only 2 developers made something like FTL or like Toby Fox churned out his Undertale (although he made hella great music which I don't have a knack for)

i have plenty of abandoned projects, one was 3/5 complete before i dumped it and it wasn't until i started my current game for the third time that i learned that i needed to build the core systems first, not patch them in when the story demanded it

to very roughly quote a Jedi master because i can't get their exact quote. teachers fail because they try to pass only their successes but fail to teach their failures to their students.

@Hakase i probably haven't seen enough to truly think if Araragi is dumb or not. a part of me doesn't like him because he almost ruined things between Hitagi and Kanbaru.

i have small fan fic snippets set in an alternate world with a female Araragi-chan who's being trained by the originla Meme Oshino who can travel between the 2 worlds. Araragi-chan i would say is smarter but only in the sense that she knows of the greater multiverse i have

and that her Oshino Shinobu is the twin sister of Araragi-kun's Shinobu and knows they are both actually a kind of divine being and their mother is off in another reality looking for answers why neither one of them have their full power (chan's has the knowledge while kun's has the power)
