4:00 PM
the tosca automates the creation of your runtime
more like an installer

I come from windows background, so is it like an .exe or a source code file?
nah I'm still confused

for example, tosca can create a vm on an openstack instance, installs the os on the vm, installs all needed dependencies, like mongodb and nodejs, gets the program, you want to run, configures everything and starts it

what's openstack?

a program to manage virtual machines
it can create them, delete them, open ports of them, close them, associate ips or urls with them and so on

oh ok this is clear now
so basically simulating a clean install on a brand new computer?

4:03 PM
not only simulating
it really does all of this
afterwards you can go to your vm and everything is there...

but it's inside a vm, so it's not as realistic as automated installation on an actual dedicated desktop
aren't there any problems with that approach?

well, many things aren't run on a physical machine but rather vms
here is some information about tosca: docs.oasis-open.org/tosca/TOSCA/v1.0/TOSCA-v1.0.html
i haven't read it but it is the complete specification

I've been using vmware workstation for my VMs where I can add/remove devices and change quotas on hard drive space and max ram available, is it like that?

@ton.yeung i don't know whether it is only a container or a real vm... to be honest, i don't really care either...
it works, that's enough for me xD

4:10 PM
ok so how do containers work and how are they different in usage?
and what is the full name of those containers so I could google up the info
just "container" is not gonna work obv

@ton.yeung The Wikipedia contains no knowledge of such a thing

Operating-system-level virtualization is a server virtualization method in which the kernel of an operating system allows the existence of multiple isolated user-space instances, instead of just one. Such instances, which are sometimes called containers, software containers, virtualization engines (VEs) or jails (FreeBSD jail or chroot jail), may look and feel like a real server from the point of view of its owners and users. On Unix-like operating systems, this technology can be seen as an advanced implementation of the standard chroot mechanism. In addition to isolation mechanisms, the kernel...
this?
it did work :p

@Hakase well, a container uses pretty much the same kernel as the enveloping machine and uses also its ram. but the direct interaction between programs run in the container and programs run in the enveloping machine is very limited

oh cool

@ton.yeung i looked it up, openstack can be used with hyper-v, xen and kvm
i don't think we use hyper-v because i think the server runs some kind of linux
to my previous remark that i don't know what openstack uses and your guess that it is a container and not a vm
oh, vmware can be used as well...
i don't know about routers... but vm and container, yes
ohh, ok
no, openstack does not implement tosca
but iaas platforms can be used with tosca
opentosca implements tosca
i think heat is something different
but the translator is only part of heat
heat is the openstack engine to deploy a container/vm from openstack to openstack easily
with the translator you can also do the same with other deployment methods, like tosca

4:27 PM

yeah and the only tosca in that article is in autoscaling
like i said, it is used to deploy with openstacks own format
tosca is a different format
the translator can translate tosca to heat

I wonder if documentation.se is gonna have a guide on all of that coz I'd like to read the best practices and figure out what this is best for
among many other things
coz right now this is just theory to me, idk what this is used for specifically
non-playable character or are we talkin about some other mumbo-jubmo?
ok

except when you run user code...
then you may want to use vms because of added security

how different is it from copypasting a single VM instance that you've installed an OS into and configured everything in?
I think you can run multiple volatile snapshots from a single VM's image

i think the emulating is far more expensive than copying the disk.
you copy the disk once, but run the emulated os all the time

4:37 PM
so this is for short-term testing primarily?
confusion intensifies
ok so it's basically faster than VMs for your purposes, whatever they are
ok let's stop at this
I don't think I'll be able to understand the game analogy
I have to watch some vids on making actual games tho :p
I'll keep those containers in mind for when I need to do multiple clean tests maybe, but then I'll probably be better off with volatile snapshots if it's just my own computer

that paper does some comparison between kvm vs vmware
surprisingly (really, i was surprised as well) vmware was in almost all tests better than kvm
well, it shows that at least a kvm container is slower than a vm
i am as well...
but the results are pretty unambiguous.

user image
2

but kvm utilizes the same kernel as the main os
and vmware sometimes outperforms the main os...
which is pretty weird...
mostly, i only use them as well... but it is still pretty interesting that, with default configuration, a vm might be faster than a container

@Chinatsu-creepy-chan it's phrased in a way that I can't call nice

Q: Amuro Ray in Gundam ZZ why didn't he assist Bright?

LuckyAliWhy didn't Bright ask for Amuro's assistance in Gundam ZZ ,at least in the later parts of the series? What was Amuro doing in the Gundam ZZ time?

7:28 PM

Just finished Shouwa Genroku. Might be the best anime I've ever watched O_o
I was not expecting that at all

@Hippalectryon I might watch it

Watch it :D

did you already watch Madoka?

7:34 PM
Not yet, I have "download madoka" on a post it for this weekend (I have a better connection on weekends)
I have ~380 animes on PTW
I don't have a clue how Deen got the budget for the show though I can't imagine what kind of merch they can promote for this one

7:51 PM
@Chinatsu-creepy-chan ^ better waifu

@Armin who's that ?

@Hippalectryon chise from mahou tsukai no yome

Oh It's in my PTW, haven't watched it yet

i read the manga, it's pretty good and the way i imagine the voices pretty depressing in many parts...
but i enjoy reading it...
@Chinatsu-creepy-chan some other good ones...

@Hakase first of all, that is a weird waifu xD
second, pokemon go for android seems pretty shitty with an average of 3.6
out of 5

9:00 PM
@ton.yeung do/did you watch the anime or read the manga?
@ton.yeung is it depressing? everyone always somewhat sad, chise always shy and very quiet?

@ton.yeung that pun was bad and you should feel bad
@ton.yeung doesn't change that it is a bad pun
@ton.yeung only manga

reddit.com/r/videos/comments/4rvs3m/hog_calling_a_corgi all I could think of is poor neighbours

9:49 PM
@Hakase well, the facts are in an iff relationship

youtube.com/watch?v=Fpe7UToBGQQ this is the longest wave surfing thing I've seen
