Q: How do I read manga with multiple panes?

Retrosaur Taking this pane for example, there are total of 8 panes, but it's divided into three differnt segments from the top to the bottom. I've tried reading from the top right, to the bottom right, then starting with the next pane downwards. I know manga is read right to left, and I'm having some t...

A: How are Tags read?

iKlsRExpanding on what Luke said.. Tags decide very little on the type of answer(s) you will get on a question. For example, the question you linked could have had rigging or constraints added too, that didn't stop people from adding those solutions. As he also said, it is just a fancy organization f...

I'm not even sure what the problem he's having with reading that page is. I could find some crazy pages which are hard to read, but this isn't one of them.
lots of se nubs over here..
But if we assume the question is valid, then I don't see any existing tags which it fits under. It's far too basic to fit under anything manga-specific.
02:24
@iKlsR Retrosaur has somewhat of a reputation. He's not very active on any sites, but he tends to ask very popular basic questions that get lots of upvotes. For the most part, they're the sort of questions that you should be able to answer yourself without asking on an SE site, and play towards the lowest common denominator on the site. As you can tell, I'm not really a fan of his.
He's also one of the people who gets flagged most often in The Bridge.
heh.. good eye. The bridge is a troll breeding ground
also math.se annoys me. every question asked over there is like a breakthrough or something
Most Math.SE questions are good, and get only a couple of votes. The ones that people who aren't regulars on MSE see are almost always bad/stupid though, and the higher it gets on the multicollider the worse it is typically.

Q: Why did Naruto and Sasuke hit Tobi with rasen shuriken directly?

Nix R. EyesWhen Naruto first mastered rasenshuriken and used it againts Kakuzu, his arm was also injured due to multiple wind blades that also damage the user and had to recover for a while. But in recent chapter, combined with Sasuke's amaterasu, and both of them were holding the shuriken, they hit Tobi w...

exactly
The highest voted question on MSE which is actually a good original math question is this one. Looking through the top 50 questions, there are only a few that I find really interesting, and by and large the rest are either trivial or big list "questions".
If you judge the site based on that, you'd conclude that less than 10% of the site is good questions, but in my experience it's over 50%. Just that most of those questions never get hot precisely because they're good questions and hence understood by fewer people.
tbh that's a big part of why I'm not active on MSE anymore. MO has a much better community with almost 100% interesting questions, and I can ask any questions I need there just as well as on MSE.

@ton.yeung you can cp the link to your comment here..
If you stick around, you're going to get spoiled on tons of stuff sooner or later (unless you're up to date on everything).

@ton.yeung :) I noticed the comment you made was the same one on the question. I was just saying in the future you can copy the link and paste it here instead of typing it over.
uhhh... massive spoilers? rage/quit? — ton.yeung 5 mins ago
@ton.yeung If you click the timestamp on any comment on the main site, it gives you a link to the comment directly. If you post that in chat without anything else on the line it'll automatically convert it to a block quote.
Thanks for -2 for possible answer -.- — ahmad albayati Jul 21 at 3:20
@ton.yeung It's unavoidable. You should try to hide spoilers as much as possible (especially in titles), but it's more important to present the question clearly than to avoid spoilers. Usually anything with spoilers will be tagged with the series tag, so you can avoid questions like that, but occasionally there are questions like this which do have spoilers.
2
@ton.yeung e.g. most questions with spoilers about Naruto will have , and you can probably judge from the title whether or not it's further advanced than you are.

feels like we need a general manga tag or should it fall under ?
@Krazer No idea. We talked about that a little while ago with no consensus. It definitely shouldn't be IMO.
general manga sounds good.. m-p is too specific
I'll provisionally make a tag and post a meta abotu this
03:07
It's not even clear to me that the question should be on-topic. If it is, it might be better to make it a question since the question he's really asking is about how to read a panel of Naruto manga and he knows how it's usually done.
Also, this brings up the issue as to whether is still useful. I don't see it being used often. Most of the time questions by new users about series without tags don't use anyway and it's clearly being used outside it's intended purpose (and creating an annoying situation for us) right now.
@ton.yeung There's no general answer to this beyond "it usually goes right to left but sometimes follows other patterns if the layout of the page dictates it."
@ton.yeung @Krazer's answer already sort-of says this. It's usually only an issue with action scenes, though if you read shoujo manga there are lots of extremely strange panel arrangements there.
Feel free to post your own answer though. More answers isn't a bad thing so long as they're all correct and contributing to the discussion.
I think reading manga should be on-topic as it's discussing how to use the medium itself
@ton.yeung what do you mean?
they are considered on topic
@ton.yeung of the web-novel?
ok
@ton.yeung aww how cute :P hope you have fun :D
I like the series it's pretty interesting

I had an asian friend..
@ton.yeung do you speak mandarin? you can break out the all the foreigner chinese accents:
called him ching chong.. hasn't spoken to me in years
lulz
@ton.yeung lol!
@Krazer Are you still going to post that meta discussion?
yes doing it now I got a little distracte
03:39
You could just read the raws without translating them. That's what I usually do. Translating is a time-consuming process, and in my opinion a lot of the time is spent on things other than comprehension.
Honestly if you're not opposed to pirating them then you can probably just find them via Google.

Q: How should we deal with general anime and manga question that doesn't really fit in manga- or anime-production tag?

KrazerRecently we had a question that didn't really feel like it falls under manga-production, so I provisionally created a general-manga tag. @Krazer Answered

lets all learn all japanese by translating manga and LN!
@ton.yeung i find bad subs to be amusing
03:58
IMO translating is not a very efficient way to learn a language. In my experience in translating, I spend around 20% of the time trying to comprehend and 80% trying to find the best way to phrase what's being said in the other language. Usually when I want to comprehend something it's better to think entirely in Japanese, but I have to switch back and forth for translating. It's still a very good exercise to do, but I don't think it's the most efficient way to learn a language.
04:54
@ton.yeung why not?
I feel that sometimes it can be comical

@LoganM The few times (about 3-5 last month, I think) I had to retag posts by new users, they properly used . I haven't found people using random tags and specifying that the post needed retagging on the body for quite a while now.

14:25
@ton.yeung Yeah, but it's also just about the most obscure thing I've ever heard of.
I usually catch most of the references in these shows, but a small fraction of them are pretty much unsolvable unless you get really lucky or search really hard. Regardless of how much manga you've read, there's practically no chance that you've heard of that series.
15:28
@ton.yeung sleep? what's that?
@ton.yeung That's a huge waste of precious time
@ton.yeung 10 hours seems a bit much. Have you considered naps?
@JNat easy for you to say, (fighting) robots don't need sleep
@Krazer kill exterminate
@JNat that's more like it!

@ton.yeung what?
when did this come out
16:23
@ton.yeung You still around?
@MadaraUchiha Hey
@ton.yeung Would you mind testing the screen sharing mechanism I mentioned on SO?
@ton.yeung Depends. I can go for 2-3 days without sleep and without any serious ill effects, but after that I'd need almost a full day of sleep. Usually I sleep 6-8 hours a day. During the summers I've been sleeping around 6 am - noon but I have to teach a course for a friend this week so that messed everything up. I'm currently on a cycle with 2-hour naps every 8-hours, for 6 hours a day, but I should get back to something normal after this weekend.
@ton.yeung It's just in a browser :-)
@ton.yeung Aight, thanks :-)

Q: Is "Ray" a sidestory of "Black Jack"?

Jon LinThe TV series Ray is about a woman with "X-Ray vision" who was saved by a doctor when she was young. @ton.yeung what language did you read it in?
@ton.yeung what about the style?
@ton.yeung art
@ton.yeung did it involve supernatural things and collecting balls?
@ton.yeung it's hard to say, sounds like it could be any number of manga.
you remember anything about the MC?
sounds a bit like Yaiba
18:19
yes could be sakamoto!
@Krazer Impossible. No one could forget Sakamoto.
@ton.yeung It's Sakamoto, you know.
@ton.yeung that's literally the title of the series
@ton.yeung I was gonna mention that
@ton.yeung we only mentioned it for comedic purposes
because Sakamoto is the solution to everything
18:35
So the point of the series is that he's the awesomest nerd ever?
@Krazer Sakamoto is no joke. He's the real deal.
2
@Danalog No. The point of the series is that he's Sakamoto!
@LoganM Who is this Sakamoto? I shall crush him with my eyelids.
@MadaraUchiha lol u wish
@JNat what do you think?
@LoganM Powers? :P
18:43
@MadaraUchiha He's Sakamoto
And no, "Kill him with your Awesome" doesn't count as "power".
@JNat No?
This Sakamoto guy seems pretty serious!
What's his power?
@MadaraUchiha He has no powers. He's just Sakamoto
@JNat What prevents me from dropping a two meteors on his head?
18:48
He sometimes feeds pigeons
@MadaraUchiha You wouldn't do that, he's Sakamoto.
@JNat ...So?
(that's all I have)
@JNat So basically, you have nothing.
(you'd kill him just by looking at him)
18:53
I'm really not into boys, so whatever charm he may have on you, would be crushed against my sharingan.
I'm not really into girls either...
I'm into death and destruction...
Oh, and the moon! I'm also into the moon!
@LoganM not just pigeons
@Krazer That's... not him... right?
Also, mine is scarier.
In any case, if you dropped a meteor on Sakamoto, the most likely result is that he would catch it and thank you because he needed some space rocks.
Those are humongous rocks in the background.
@MadaraUchiha That's sonic ninja from One Punch Man
19:46
@Krazer Congrats on OVER 9000 rep!!!

@LoganM What?! Nine-thousand?!
There's no way that can be right!

Q: Kendo manga from 15 years ago with dual wielding main character

ton.yeung Shounen Around 15 years ago (don't really remember) About Kendo 90% sure the main character dual wielded The story was very much like Prince of Tennis (competitive with the characters having crazy non-realistic moves)

@Sakamoto This is going to be hard without any more information.
@ton.yeung ^
@ton.yeung you forgot to add the spinning move
I'll look into it, but no guarantees. My knowledge of pre-2000 stuff is not particularly good.
IMO it's specific enough to be a legitimate ID request (the biggest worry with poorly informed ID requests is that there are lots of manga/anime fitting those criteria; this doesn't seem to be the case here), but probably this one is too hard to answer in its current form.
I still say it's Sakamoto
it all fits xD
20:26
~Bored~
@ton.yeung I read 20 pages and the only girl looks like a 20-year-old man. Dropped.
21:09
That is not Miku.
@Krazer Already saw it. That's really sort of disappointing.
@ton.yeung It's a major company that essentially wants to sabotage an external site which they have no connection to in order to promote their product. I don't think their intentions were actually that bad, but at the very least it's clear that they whoever thought this was a good idea didn't know anything about SO. Not to mention, Samsung is a company that I actually sort of liked, though I don't own anything by them.
@LoganM I wouldn't give up on an entire company based on what could just be an overenthusiastic, underinformed PR person
@Danalog I haven't really given up on them (though it wouldn't really matter either way as I'm not in the market for consumer electronics), but it is disappointing.
22:00
Tachibana Pan, the author of "Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai", is going to be releasing a new LN series as soon as it ends (in a few weeks) titled "Masochistic Ecstasy". The first volume will be released August 25th.
Adding this to my list of things to look forward to.
I'm sure it will be wrong in many ways.
Depends what LN. Often times I just pirate it and buy the physical copies later because they're hard to get here without outrageous costs. If it's something popular enough to be available by standard import channels then I'll use those. I also have a number of acquaintances in Japan who are willing to ship me stuff or just hold on to it until I can pick it up.
I have a friend who buys stuff from Amazon.jp all the time
I don't think it's too abnormal
There's a good guide posted a few months ago which was starred for how to get stuff from Japan. It's pretty complete so long as you're not getting anything outrageous or very limited edition.

ebook light novels is an interesting idea. I don't think it's been tried to any significant degree yet.
Typically in the range ¥600 to ¥800. For older series which are out of print and hard to find it can be much more than that though.
looking on amazon.co.jp, there actually are some with kindle editions
@ton.yeung Yeah they're only used copies anyway.
The Kindle editions seem to be around ¥100 cheaper than the print ones, so they're right in your price range.
@ton.yeung bye
Does anyone know what these icons mean? They're on a bunch of Area51 pages, not just ours.
22:37
@LoganM Over 7k rep means you're a Badass
@Danalog I thought that might be it, but it also appears on a bunch of people below 3k, and on other sites it doesn't seem to be correlated to rep at all.
btw are you able to reproduce this? I thought for a while it was something on my end, but clearing cookies didn't change it.
jnat has it for me
and madara
but not kuwaly
Probably some caching issue then. If it's not reproducibly the same people, then it's clearly not intended.
I see none of it:
I wonder if that's the generic Beta icon
22:49
@Danalog what do you get when you inspect the icon?
The icon is part of the flair image. It's not a separate image file
