Q: On a dual CPU server, is it normal for one CPU to run hotter than the other?

samozI have a dual Opteron server running Linux with libvirt to host several VMs. The VMs work fine and the server processes OK, but I notice one CPU always runs about 69C (throttles at 70C) and the other runs about 15C. This doesn't seem normal to me? Shouldn't they both be a little closer in temper...

it's funny how the question is still valid
@Yuuki here's the nisei koi spinoff where a certain someone becomed a magical girl
@Eric Area51 Q/D "Excellent" level may be lowered to 10: discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/18836/…. IMO 10 is more reasonable than 15.
Agreed. 15 is really too high.
00:43
Only about 40 sites in the network have over 15, and only 6 are beta sites. There's another 5 or so beta sites in the 10-15 range.
well, "excellent" does mean that it's outstanding enough
I'd say even 10 is setting a pretty high bar, but that depends on the topic.
maybe just for achievement value :p
@Hakase Except that people use those stats as goals to aim for, and even do bizarre things like changing policies or lowering quality to try to meet the goals. Which in the end is horribly counterproductive.
oh I wasn't aware of that
00:45
15 good questions per day is certainly excellent. 12 terrible ones and 3 good ones is way worse than 3 good ones and no terrible ones.
@LoganM It's kinda crazy to think that SO gets 7000+ questions a day.
really?
@Mysticial That number hasn't changed that much though recently.
By comparison, Math SE is over 600 Q/D now, while a couple years ago it was below 100. And it shows little sign of slowing down.
7.5k now. Last time I checked it was 7.0k.
probably students everywhere rejoice
and coders :p
00:48
@Hakase Yeah. And a lot of people don't realize that 95% of it is crap which makes us all grumpy.
I'd ask how they manage moderating SO, but they don't
Moderators don't moderate SO the same way moderators on other sites moderate their sites. On SO, they rely almost entirely on flags.
TBH, when you have 7000 crap questions and only (a few hundred?) avid users that bother to moderate, you really need to get trigger happy.
oh I know! every time I think of something in my life as hard, I should just think of how to fix SO and then all my troubles seem like nothing
honestly, every time I have no idea
00:49
@Mysticial A year ago it was 7.7k
@LoganM oh, I didn't know that.
Q/D hit a high point around April at 8.7k, and hasn't shown much of an upward trend since.
huh I wonder what's with that holiday drop in january
@LoganM I think it might be an annual trend.
It's still up from this time last year. But yes the growth has slowed down.
Since it's probably saturating the programmer market.
No, a year ago to the day, it was higher than it is now.
albeit only by a couple hundred
00:52
Oh, that graph goes back more than a year.
I simply dragged it all the way back thinking it was a year since the scale looked like it was a year.
I assume it goes back as far as @Eric has data.
% answered going down makes sense.
People are starting to ignore the bad questions.
Yeah, it shows all data if you drag it that far.
Visits per day also seems pretty stable for SO now.
what's with slightly higher visit rate in the middle of November on A&M?
00:54
@Hakase End of Naruto
we had several questions get thousands of hits per day each when that happened.
@Eric is there any way to turn the orange and green lines off? They're kind of useful on beta sites I guess, but for a site like SO they just look silly.
There isn't, but I can add it.
The only way I see SO being maintainable is if the % answered dropped to 10%.
IOW, ignore all the crap. That way everyone is happy.
I actually wonder what causes users to join and stick around. Say if 90% of questions got ignored, how much would it hurt the flow of new users? IOW, what % of all questions need to be ignored before the # of total questions drops to a manageable level.
@Eric Any way to organize the drop down list into alphabetic order?
Can't find A&M >_>
Click -> type "Anime" -> press Enter
@Frosteeze keep pressing A
also yes it should be sorted
this basic usability stuff we talkin bout
01:08
It's sorted by site creation date, which is more useful for comparison purposes.
2 sorting options then
or a filter box
I don't see the problem when you can type the site name and it finds the entry for you.
Maybe that's a browser-dependent feature though. In which case it's your fault for not using IE.
can it be a datagrid with Name and Created columds?
@LoganM I think that's OS stuff
I might be wrong tho
@LoganM Porque no los dos? We can have both
we sure can have, but will Eric have us have em?
askin the real questns
01:11
I'm sure we can if we spam him enough
ok it's time for me to sleep definitely
@Eric @Eric @Eric
@Hakase Good night :3
There's a finite amount of work I can convince @Eric to do regarding this stuff, so things like adding options for how to sort the dropdown list aren't very high compared to actually important things.
01:15
important things aside, if anybody wants to play some chat games with Karasu or Taisho, send me the rules of the game and I'll think of something
I think I suggested something related to that
Oct 27 at 8:53, by Logan M
Feature request: we should be able to battle against Karasu in WIXOSS, and he should be unbelievably bad.
this can be easily done − Karasu will make it look like he thinks he's playing whatever this is and then do some random nonsense because he doesn't actually know anything about this game
as a direct result of me not knowing nothing about it either
sudo Hakase sleep
It works! ;o
let's see~

Q: Where does Little Red Riding Hood appear?

Memor-XI was looking over the TYPE-MOON Wikia for new images and saw one which made me think of Assassin of Black in Fate/Apocrypha however under "Appears on these pages " it was listed to be in the List of Minor Characters In her profile it says: Little Red Riding Hood (赤ずきん, ?) is a resident of F...

Q: Is the Fruit of Grisaia an actual fruit?

Logan MHaving played a fair bit of -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA- (Grisaia no Kajitsu, literally "The Fruit of Grisaia"), I have to admit that the title has confused me more than anything else. It seems to have very little to do with the plot of the VN, at least so far. What is the meaning of the title? Is i...

@Frosteeze nice rep
@OshinoShinobu Thanks :3
@Frosteeze but I'm gonna ruined it :D
it should change now
or soon...
02:20
@OshinoShinobu Nuuuu I can't claim I'm a noob anymore
But thanks rofl
@Frosteeze it really irks me how wrong the accepted answer is for that question
lol, a flag.
I don't see how that video has anything offensive in it.
lol
Did you mean loli?
missed it
@ʞɹɐzǝɹ Yeah I think your answer is more in depth. You even have a source.
no clue
I guess, if you sit far enough from the monitor, the thumbnail does look like she isn't wearing anything.
I have terrible vision and I could immediately tell she was wearing clothing.
You'd have to be pretty near blind to get that confused IMO.
or just lazy
yeah I can't get to sleep
crazy ideas come rushing into my head
02:38
@Hakase watch some animu
read some mangos
a sink handle that becomes bigger or smaller depending on how much you open it
eat some mikan, while in a kotatsu
it's 5:39 where do I get mikans at this hour
so anyway
can anyone say if Microsoft Surface is a good tablet?
@Hakase which one?
I guess the best one
which is I suppose the Pro 3
02:42
legs
sup with em
@Hakase battery life could be better, it's kinda tricky to fix yourself, not bad performance wise
@ʞɹɐzǝɹ get an external usb battery thing?
Isn't that one like $800? If you're spending that much, you might as well get a desktop. Even an $800 tablet will run slower than a decent desktop on any serious computations.
@Hakase like an external 12V?
02:46
I'm looking for something nice to switch from my netbook Asus EeePC 1101ha
@ʞɹɐzǝɹ is that the only way to recharge it?
I would say it's better, but wait until the next iteration comes out, for the price drop
uh-huh
@Hakase I dunno never tried to charge one line that but I assume you can
I really like the digital pen bonus feature
type cover not included btw
02:48
I'd love to sketch notes of weird stuff, but not on paper coz it's easily lost and I stop caring about paper notes real quick
yea >.>
I'll have to buy the pen separately too
for $128
ah the default pen is included
why is the type cover so expensive is what I wanna know
why are there like 100 user ratings total
does nobody care like on msdn
there's also Power Cover which allegedly adds 70% more duration
durability
and boosts stamina regen
actually that's an interesting question
do you have to recharge it while connected or can it be recharged separately
this could easily turn into a charger nightmare
you thought you charged it but no you forgot
you ended up taking that hunk o junk with you for nothing
(trying to fall asleep, take two)
03:11
@ton.yeung So my sister says she wants to go see the movie.
The only issue being that's the last week-ish of school and my parents have been planning a trip to Miami.
@ton.yeung What I meant was that she isn't sure whether or not the trip will conflict. Obviously, if it does, she's going to Miami.
I can't go because of my job.
Which is annoying and I should find another one.
@ton.yeung Uhh... my parents are notoriously bad about making vacation plans far enough in advance and communicating said information.
@ton.yeung You still have that kinda-sorta intern job available?
@ton.yeung I got about a year.
@ton.yeung Oh, I can come to the movie. I was saying I wasn't going on the trip to Miami regardless.
My bad, I didn't word it particularly well.
he better say right
once he confirms, go
@ton.yeung are you in some sort of time loop?
03:34
@ton.yeung Riiiight...
As long as she's on a side, she's fine.
She has this thing needing to be furthest from people. She always takes the seat next to the wall when we dine out.
@ton.yeung I'll send you munny in a bit
@ton.yeung wut
@ʞɹɐzǝɹ I'm guessing your first name begins with P?
Because I'm the J, I assume.

@Frosteeze don't you see black berries
nvm, I r str0pid.
@mirroroftruth Wait where? I'm confused D:
Also I wonder if that bot is fixed lol
Did you mean loli?
05:00
the post you made blackberry , there is a pic of cute girl and black berries ,oppai
Ohhhhhhhh
@Eric Join me in being st00pid
@Frosteeze yaaaaay
@Eric FWIW (with 3 days of data) all the A51 90-day user projections seem to be consistent with reporting [c * N], where N is the actual number, c some constant (which depends on the number of days and possibly other factors, but critically not the rep level, such that c = 1 at 90 days), and [ ] denotes some form of rounding (either truncation or rounding to nearest integer). The current direction of my analysis is determining the form of c and whether it is the same across sites.
Will report back probably in a week or so once I've got enough data to make further conclusions.
It should vary across sites, if it's based on results from private beta.
Which is my hunch.
The old rule was just c= 90/d, where d is the number of days. I imagine anything more complicated than that would be based on a regression of the site's data, but then there's a rather large parameter space to search.

Q: Cant remember anime name!

ArthasI'm trying to remember the name of an anime that i watched as a kid but only vaguely remember anything about it. All i can remember is that they collected "artifacts" or something and when the got them all an infinity loop appeared in the sky. Thats all i can really remember lol not much to go on...

But the near future should bring me some good data points from Emacs and Worldbuilding which constrain the value pretty stringently. Even if I can't figure out the exact form of c, I'll at least be able to measure it fairly precisely and confirm that some version of the model is essentially right.
no, not really
(IMO)
Bangs are a different trait power afaik.
@Eric C++ streams are slow by design.
The standard requires that they be slow.

Q: Is Takanashi Touka a chuunibyou?

Sakurai TomokiWell, we see in the anime that sometimes Rikka would fight Touka in the chuunibyou world. My question is, does this means that Touka is a chuunibyou herself, or is she just playing along with Rikka?

@Mysticial Well it turns out the bottleneck wasn't on the stream anyway.
Now I'm trying to figure out why my postprocessing is slow as hell.

Q: Does the C++ standard mandate poor performance for iostreams, or am I just dealing with a poor implementation?

Ben VoigtEvery time I mention slow performance of C++ standard library iostreams, I get met with a wave of disbelief. Yet I have profiler results showing large amounts of time spent in iostream library code (full compiler optimizations), and switching from iostreams to OS-specific I/O APIs and custom buf...
