# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="de"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

BACKSPACE="guess"
in /etc/default/

no, that just shows the device layout
it's a hardware thing
doesn't change when I switch layouts

does not switch? well if i set the layout to be EN (which is a pain in the backside to find keys on xkblayout changes to en

I have a keyboard shortcut to toggle between layouts :)

i simply deleted the english layout from the system
there is only german layout available on my machine right now

there should be lots of layouts

6:08 PM
only one on my system, because i hate it when im in a game and by some weird accident it switched
:)
and german keyboards are unicorns in that matter
with their unique layout nearly as weird as finnish and arabic and so on keyboards
z is where us layout has its y, to many changes

yeah that is just not what we're talking about in this question I think

yes he wants a way to see the configuration and i found nothing on that beside simply cat /etc/default/keyboard
the strings inside dont get exported and are not in the enviroment variables as far i can see
neither in with env nor with ( set -o posix ; set ) | less

6:26 PM
nothing changes in env when I toggle the keyboard layout... I wouldn't expect it to

yep like i said

to lurkers and future historians: we are talking about this question

on arch i would know where to find that information
it has a file containing KEYBOARD=de-latin1 in my case

ah! interesting

but it seems debian does it different
on arch this file is in /etc/ and calles vconsole.conf
but there is no such file on ubuntu
or at least i didnt find it if it is there

6:44 PM
OK lesson learned today? DO NOT GREP THROUGH /sys/
:D

haha yeah, it never ends
ah!
zanna@toaster:~$ xset -q >en
zanna@toaster:~$ xset -q >ta
(I change layouts before hitting return)
zanna@toaster:~$ diff en ta

7:05 PM
not only that it never ends, it actually screwed my system over for good

2 hours later…
9:00 PM
whats that about?

@Videonauth Blue Planet II? It's a high-budget nature documentary focused on the oceans. It's... just unbelieveable :)

@Zanna Oh cool, will have to look where i can get it

I don't know how available it is... It's a new BBC documentary just being screened for the first time... but they are saying the footage is available because it's of scientific importance. I believe they made many new discoveries. But, this is really off topic, although vaguely in keeping with our theme haha

In my opinion, it is fine for off-topic conversations to arise in the Downboat. They should be moved to the Island, either immediately or after not too long, but I don't see a problem with them happening.

well anyway im going to bed now, feeling exhausted somehow the whole day already
sunday syndrome maybe :)

9:07 PM
Good night!

9:21 PM
@EliahKagan I agree, off-topic is a fun place to go

Of course, if separate messages could be used in the Downboat for on-topic and off-topic content, that would be helpful. :)
I also wonder, sometimes, whether or not to move messages about the Island to the Island. I usually move them, provided they are effectively attached to an off-topic conversation, as I consider to be the case here. :)

ooh I haven't noticed any such movings... where are they talking about us? :D

@Zanna Good night!

:)

I also wonder if I should move "hello" and "goodbye" type messages when they appear attached to off-topic conversations. I obviously do not move them in general, only in that situation, in which case I do move them so long as it seems to make sense to, though I wonder if that is right.
Also, when something is borderline and leans toward the Island, I sometimes leave it alone... unless it's about something already discussed on the Island, in which case I usually move it, as I'm about to do with the messages about fixing my bash answers--unless you object--which have an on-topic "Is this really a duplicate?" message attached, which I won't move, and which normally would be enough to make me not move the message it responds to.
(Clicking for the older message will still show it in the Island transcript so little confusion should result, if any.)

9:28 PM
I know what you're talking about - yes I was thinking those should be moved to preserve the integrity of that thread of conversation in the other room a little better

Also they punctuate a conversation there in the Downboat, so moving them may actually improve readability rather than worsening it.
So you said you were about to go to sleep. I was wondering if you might have some thoughts about a weird thing I've noticed in Bash, which I am looking into in preparation for asking a question about a related matter, and which I might ask a separate question about.
If you think you may be interested in--or knowledgeable about--how pipes seem to suppress "Segmentation fault" messages from being printed even in situations where asynchronous operation cannot explain it, then perhaps we'll discuss that on the Island (or wherever) tomorrow. (Obviously this is one of the messages that I am about to move over.)
40 messages moved from Raiders of the Lost Downboat‌
