What do you think, @GraceNote, is this election going to be quieter than the last, or is it just the calm before the storm?
@DanielFischer I don't know.
We shall see soon.
I wouldn't mind quieter. Not too quiet, but quieter.
It's been 3 years since the last election, after all - there's not a lot of spoken activity as Asaf noted but I mean, I've got over 900 views on my Q&A collection thread, and there's over 600 views on amWhy's nomination-y thread. Actually-quiet sites tend to see double digit counts on those.
Yes. Only two "nomination requests" so far, though. They came in much faster the last time.
I can't remember if we had the one-week-advance last time or not
19:41
We didn't, as far as I recall. All came out the same day. And instantly a dozen or so "not very convincing" nominations.
20:03
^ For all not aware, its open
But you're probably here because you are aware lol
Who are the two nominees @DanielFischer ??
@VidyanshuMishra The nomination phase was released only minutes ago lol
@VidyanshuMishra Not "nominees", just two answers here suggesting possible candidates.
But @SimplyBeautifulArt Daniel said that there are only two nomination requests so far
Ah I see @DanielFischer
@SimplyBeautifulArt But the announcement was out a week ago, plenty of time to draft one's nomination post if one knows one wants to run. Then pasting it in the box takes less than a minute.
20:11
@DanielFischer :P
But, usually the more serious candidates ponder a while whether to run.
Xam
Xam
@SimplyBeautifulArt are you running for the election?
@Xam Sure + why not? :-)
Xam
Xam
@SimplyBeautifulArt I will vote for you :-)
20:18
Did Grace Note announce how many positions we are filling this time? I have inside information that it is either two or three, but I'm not sure which it is :-)
I was going to nominate @SimplyBeautifulArt but I thought he will decline.
@VidyanshuMishra lol
Xam
Xam
XD
Ahh! Thanks @SimplyBeautifulArt
20:19
You know, I kinda feel like you should notify who you want to nominate first
Are you sure @SimplyBeautifulArt that you will take part in elections?
@VidyanshuMishra yeeessss :P
But... I should probably be working on my homework...
Xam
Xam
Is it possible to still nominate someone?
Ah that would be nice. Youth era of MSE. XD
^ Also, what does nominating someone actually do?
Xam
Xam
20:21
Hehe
I think I should nominate myself too. Two under 18 boys running greatest mathematics site on the web. @SimplyBeautifulArt
:P
@SimplyBeautifulArt You mean here? It makes the "nominee" aware that somebody thinks they'd be a good choice, and depending on the voting, lets them see whether they'd have a realistic chance.
@DanielFischer Ah, okay. Thanks
@VidyanshuMishra Meh, @Mithrandir is even younger than us, and he's a mod on a couple of sites already
@VidyanshuMishra Moderators don't "run the site". It's more like picking up the garbage, and herding a bunch of cats at the same time.
3
@SimplyBeautifulArt Nah, only one SE site
20:23
Lol @Mithrandir is here
@Mithrandir Ah, okay. But you ran for another one :P
@DanielFischer Herding cats sounds impossible xD
@SimplyBeautifulArt in the real election: nothing. It's not possible. You can only self nominate. In @amWhy's meta thread, it encourages them to run when the actual election starts.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Sounds about right.
@SimplyBeautifulArt I was offered another one, on Artificial Intelligence, but declined.
@SimplyBeautifulArt you remember math.stackexchange.com/users/133248/… ??
20:26
@VidyanshuMishra yep, I was pinged, so I got a big notification on my screen
She nominated herself in the last election.
@VidyanshuMishra Ah, yeah
@VidyanshuMishra cool
@Mithrandir :P
@Mithrandir you are moderator at very young age, how do you manage it all?
@VidyanshuMishra well, I'm homeschooled, so I don't have to run off to school
I've been on SE since 2014, so I understand how the network works pretty well.
Ah... that explains a bit
young'un.
20:30
Ah I see. I was thinking too either you are a dummy student or homeschooled. @Mithrandir
Btw I see a lot of people are joining the chat but no one is speaking!!
@VidyanshuMishra A dummy student!? What's that supposed to mean? x'D
@VidyanshuMishra :P maybe they're just here to watch
I knew that you will ask about it @SimplyBeautifulArt but I think it is not the right place to discuss such things
I'm not entirely sure if I like the formatting on question 7. I'd prefer to take out the square brackets please? — Simply Beautiful Art 7 secs ago
7. Do you see your (eventual) moderator role primarily as one of the following? You can assign weights or only pick a few, however you'd like: [Civil rights advocate], [Senator/congressman leading the formulation of policies], [Judge], [UN Blue Beret, i.e. peace enforcement], [Detective, police officer], [Home plate umpire/ referee (depending on whether baseball or association football is your sport)], [Janitor]
I don't like the square brackets :|
20:34
Ask @JyrkiLahtonen I think it was his question
@SimplyBeautifulArt That's not an answer to the question. Deleting.
@DanielFischer It's just a comment though
1 min ago, by Simply Beautiful Art
I don't like the square brackets :|
It's a chat message.
@DanielFischer But an answer to what question?
lol
I edited #7 a bit. Does it look better now?
Of course, if it became unclear we should roll it back.
20:38
Hi
I think it looks better/more natural
I just saw the link while I was reading a question!
It is great idea to do election!
I never in my life participate in election except "in school" where we asked who do you want to put him the leader of the class!
I hope everyone all best luck!
lol
@user777 makes me think of anime :P
@SimplyBeautifulArt :P
How many moderator positions are we voting on?
20:44
@RonGordon Two.
Thinking about nominating?
Does anyone know if comments in the election page can be voted on?
They cannot.
They cannot be voted on, or, if I recall correctly, be flagged.
But I think site mods can delete them.
So the first nominee is quid, so far the election is off to a good start.
21:01
@GraceNote That's why I said fatigue. Sure, everyone is curious and everybody cares. But most people are passive. It's quiet... too quiet.
"Y’know, the thing about a shark, he’s got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eyes. When he comes after ya, he doesn’t seem to be livin’ until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white, and then – aww, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin’, the ocean turns red, and in spite of all the poundin’ and the hollerin’, they all come in and rip ya to pieces..."
Oh yeah. Maybe set up a site banner for the elections, and lock the call for questions thread.
@DanielFischer Not sure I could do better than the last nomination I made. :)
@RonGordon Thanks.
LOL, @RonGordon. Yes, last time your suggested nomination turned out a big success :-)
21:16
@AsafKaragila My wife has made me watch Jaws, and that quote just makes my skin crawl.
@AsafKaragila xD Sounds pleasant.
What should we do if we have the Deputy badge for question 8? — Simply Beautiful Art 13 secs ago
This is a question to those candidates who do not have the Deputy badge (which is given for 80 helpful flags). Dealing with flags is a big part of moderation. How do you think that your lack of experience is going to affect your handling of the flags? And how do you expect to compensate for it (at first, of course)?
@SimplyBeautifulArt You answer that you have it.
@DanielFischer Oh, okay. :P
I haven't seen @StellaBiderman in a while
21:42
Hi
:P
Did you see that I had joined the chat or was that a bizarre coincidence?
@StellaBiderman :P Coincidences don't just happen (in my book)
I've been really busy recently. I've started a part time masters program in addition to working full time. It was pretty rough at first but I'm settling into some kind of a schedule now which is nice.
Mmm, that's good
22:09
I know I'd be a bad moderator, I'm typically too busy being annoyed by math processing errors, or being annoying. That, plus, I've been on the site under 4 full months I think it says, and am lucky if I know the markdown to post comments at times.
lol
Oh yeah, aren't you the one about using ; in the a^(...) = a^(...) implies ... = ... question?
@SimplyBeautifulArt :-P
@VidyanshuMishra hey
Hey
You are nominee now??
No, it can wait :P
22:12
But why?? Are you waiting to see with whom you will be contending?
Because I have other things to do lol, and I wanna put some time into it.
Mhm .. I see
@SimplyBeautifulArt I'll find that question and screen grab what I see ...
All the best BTW.
@RoddyMacPhee Cool, thanks
@VidyanshuMishra Thanks as well
22:16
And yea, I see you aren't campaigning. How you are gonna win the election then? @SimplyBeautifulArt :-P
:-P Hey, I worked on it a bit
Weird
Also too late for me to edit
@SimplyBeautifulArt Not if you get elected ;)
yeah I know, just showing you that not all mathjax things render proper in all browsers. might even be why I see math processing errors in so much probably also depends on what mathjax || gives me errors on a lot of questions but \| doesn't and makes the same symbol.
@DanielFischer XD Silly moderator powers
@RoddyMacPhee That's a shame. I use google chrome on a Windows 10 computer
22:26
I do too so that's weird. Google Chrome is up to date
Version 61.0.3163.100 (Official Build) (64-bit) maybe it's my computer's Mathjax library/version I do go to other sites that may be using older versions of Mathjax. anyways I'm getting off topic I guess.
22:53
Aw dang, I'm totally late on this, but I came up with the idea that we could add "If you do have the Deputy badge, do you check your flag summary? How has this changed your flagging experience?" or something to that effect. — Simply Beautiful Art 14 secs ago
