A: Will the inclusion of LGBT characters in my game detract from possible sales?

PhilippIt's not as easy as saying: "Lesbian couple in the game = ± x% copies sold". Just like with most things in game development, it's not the idea which matters, but the execution. When you write LGBT characters into your game, there are many things which can go wrong: You can portray them as rid...

Note that Extra Credits is a fairly heavily biased source, so take what they say with a teaspoon of salt.
@Pyritie Do you have any actual critique of that video which is not just an unsubstantiated ad-hominem attack on the creators?
@Pyritie Heavily biased towards what sides/issues/positions/... ? Nearly all sources are biased to some degree or the other, the trick to me is in recognizing your own biases and the biases of the media you consume. If you're going to call out a source in this manner, please list appropriately. Because due to my own biases, I'm inclined to interpret your statement as Philipp does.
Note that patriarchal ≠ anti-gay. Ancient Greece was very patriarchal, but men routinely had young male lovers, and it was openly written about it. Rome was not too different.
@FelixDombek The patriarchal was more about the idea of a female consul.

+1 for using Persona 4 as an excellent reference - even if you don't prescribe to the idea that Kanji is gay, the implication that he Could be, and that it's up to the player's interpretation, is a good example.
"Just like with most things in game development, it's not the idea which matters, but the execution" Amen. Whether or not it's a good, enjoyable game will have a much, much larger impact on sales than whether two characters are lesbians or not.

Considering that your answer doesn't exactly go into Extra Credit's bonafides as a video game authority, so you seemingly posted it because of your opinion on about it, asking for citations and evidence for the contrary opinion is a bit hypocritical.

@FelixDombek That was a fairly interesting article—I had absolutely no idea about any of that.
"Just recently have we discovered that the medium can tell much deeper stories with much more complex characters than we thought." What? Some games from 20 years ago had deeper characters than most current games.

@Shautieh Although true, there's a difference. In sharp contrast to 20–25 years ago, we now have technology more readily available to delve deeper into characters than ever before, but that doesn't mean developers use it well. We don't really have any technological barriers anymore when it comes to creating a good RPG.
