@Mr.Mindor Yeah. They characters are going to be relatively minor, although crucial to the plot. A-B playtesting with them is honestly a matter of switching sprites and pronouns—not much else.

@ND523 this might just be tangentially related to the question, but I think you should think more about who your target audience is. If you target "everyone" you actually target "no one". It's hard to create a game which appeals to the 22 year old hardcore gamer, his 5 year old niece, his 55 year old father and his 88 year old grandma.
There are so many games on the market nowadays that your best bet is usually to cater to a specific demographic.
But actually it is quite likely that you do have a target audience in mind, you just don't realize that "everyone" actually means "everyone who has the same taste you have".
In that case it would help to do some introspection about who you are and why you like or dislike specific games.
Finding your target audience, how to cater to their preferences and how to advertise to them is pretty much marketing 101. And game success is basically idea * execution * marketing. So it really pays off to invest some thought into this.
